Rental Magica

Thursday, February 4th, 2010 – running time 24:05
This week Rental Magica gets a look from the panel and we make a brief stop over at Anime L.A.

Segments

Roy, Jenny, and Kaiji give us a small taste of this year's Anime L.A. Convention, Kaiji is fighting again in Hima, and Rental Magica gets a look from our panel.

Hima - Gakuen Alice, Street Fighter, Lovely Complex, Sasameki Koto

You'd probably guess that Kaiji's been playing Street Fighter, but there's also the manga Gakuen Alice, and two animes mentioned in Hima. One is a girl-girl anime called Sasameki Koto and the other is called Lovely Complex. Between Miley, Laura, and Roy you might think you can match the title with the panelist. But, it's not as easy as you might think.

AnimeTV at Anime Los Angeles 6

Anime Los Angeles is a fan-driven convention that is in its 6th year. Over 3000 people attended the event in January, where the big attraction was the cosplayers. So, we sent Roy, Jenny, and Kaiji to do a quick spin around the convention and bring back a taste of what there was to see and do.

Rental Magica is a 24-episode anime which originally aired in Japan from 2007-2008. The plot centers around the magician dispatch service and Mage's Society: Astral. Astral's second President: Itsuki Iba, is the young and inexperienced main character who ironically isn't even a Mage. Through adventures with magical spirits and creatures, competing with rival company Goetia, rogue members, taboos and the Dark Magician's Society: Ophion, the member of Astral try to complete enough jobs to pay the bills, fill The Association's quota and evade abolition.

Fun episode. I like the trip to Anime LA. I wish they had more coverage of that. In the future, I'd like to see the reviews streamlined a bit more. I don't need to hear Laura say she went to make a sandwich a half dozen times. I get the point the first time around. The content is there, it just needs to be streamlined. Maybe if they'd edit the reviews a bit more, they could fit in more than one an episode.

I watch this show for the apparent tension between Roy and the other hosts. He comes off as a bit pretentious, and it seems to cause conflicts. He's the news anchor in a room full of anime fans trying to have a conversation.

Laura and Miley take shots at him throughout the episode. At some point, they burst into laughter at the jarring nature of his pre-prepared speech. It's kind of uncomfortable to watch, but I can't get enough of it. Keep up the good work.

Back in the Episode 1 thread, you guys were telling us that 7 episodes had already been shot and to "wait for episode 8". We heard that over and over.

...and now the Anime Los Angeles visit is in episode 5? That hadn't happened when Episode 1 came out. I'm confused. Did you abandon the original episodes 5-7 or push them off until later? Was stuff re-shot? ...or what?

A few things bugged me:
* When Cristina introduces the Anime LA segment, she uses future tense to say she will be doing a concert...but then switches to past tense.

* Wow, you guys didn't cover much of Anime LA at all. I'm disappointed.
** 10 second intro at the con
** 23 seconds of footage around the con set to music
** 33 seconds of talking about what to buy in the dealers' room
** 8 more seconds of footage to music
** 38 seconds of Kyle Hebert (in the dealers' room still)
** 16 more seconds of footage to music
** 5 seconds to wrap up.
A 3 day con reduced to mostly a video montage? Nothing about what other guests were there, what panels they had, or what else was happening? That's very unfortunate! The preview you showed for Rental Magica was longer than this entire segment! :(

* When showing clips from anime, you put a huge border around the video...and then a black border around that. Is it really necessary to shrink the video that much? I feel like I'm watching the clip through blinders. Can't we get full screen footage with maybe just the logo and title at the bottom (and obligatory Rev3 watermark)? The border is excessively large (and ugly)!

* Not really in this episode, but it has bugged me since Episode 1...the use of the word "animes". The plural of "anime" is "anime"...not "animes". For example, it is correct to say "I play a lot of video games and watch a lot of anime." or "I can think of three anime titles you might like."
Saying "...watch a lot of animes." or "...three animes you might like." sounds terrible and wrong.

* Overall, the show is getting better. Still not quite there though...

I also though of the Anime LA segment as too much of a montage, i would of liked to have seen more interviews (and for the interviews to be longer) and more coverage of attractions. Also didn't care for the part where they talked about what memorabilia they were gonna buy. It was like if Discover channel went to Hong Kong to do a show about some kind of huge super airport, and instead of focusing on the interesting parts of the structure, they instead spent all their time in the souvenir shop.

I think there should be 2 reviews per show, like a movie/ova segment and a separate series segment. So far i don't think they've done a very good job of choosing the anime that they have reviewed. We've gotten the iconic anime that everyone already knows about, and then we got the reviews of anime that are not worth watching. I would like the show to introduce me to new and interesting things, to find the gems that are out there and bring them to the forefront. A negative review every here and there is alright, but with only 1 review a week its like we've gone forever without us being introduced to something interesting.

I'm diggin Kaiji's new look, professional, respectable, pimp!, lol. I would like to see him complete the outfit with a stick, a pimp stick. And with his pimp stick be beats the other hosts when they go off into tangents about sandwiches. To give the reviews more focus.

For the review, i liked how Roy opened with a little introduction, although kinda brief. I wasn't into the Cliché rant though. I thought Kaiji did a real good with the review, he formulates his opinions in a way that resonates with me and i liked how he talked about the anime being out of order, a nice tidbit of information about the show and it helped the viewer to understand his feelings towards the anime.

I am used to seeing the alternation of male hosts, I almost thought nicholas and kaiji were actually jonathan and roy's alter egos. So seeing kaiji and roy at the same time tore the fabric of reality for me. (yeah, I didn't watch much of the older shows. XD)

I am glad to see the disclaimer again. I like to watch reviews that don't seem commercials.

The song playing for the video for Rental Magica. What is it? Is it from the anime or something else. Where can I get it?

Since the last time I posted I have watched all of your first season of animeTV. That being said I really enjoy the show and this makes a great addition to my Thursdays. By the way that "reenactment" of the flashbacks was priceless! I do wonder a bit about how the main anime review is chosen for the episode but no matter the panelist review I still enjoy watching. Keep up the great work and I'll keep on watching and posting. :)

Looking forward to Basilisk review, very ninja scroll-esque to me.
AnimeTV Go!

Side note: Sweet Kenpachi reference, am I the only one who is almost more excited when ZK shows up then when Ichigo does?
Side note 2: I want to buy that Hylian shield from the ALA segment now!

quick question on how reviews are done. do u guys have a set list of anime to review or do u just pick one out and say here's what we're going to review this week. in the last 5 eps. i think at least 2 of the reviews were about bad anime that u should not watch. why even post reviews of anime unless it was for a reason. i feel like im watching reviews of stuff that i wouldnt care for anyways. i think especially on shows like this, reviews of anime should of ones that are good and that would attract viewers to watch more anime. there's no reason to show bad anime to folks when there's a crap ton of good stuff out there. this will help more anime noobs in being interested in anime overall. i do like how this review is much better than previous just because there were more explanation about why it was crap in teh first place.

Filming this season is similiar to last seasons. 2 or 3 reviews are filmed at the same time. Then as events come up, they go there and film (conventions and such). So yes, it is completely possible to have filmed 8 episodes BEFORE Anime LA. In season 1 we would film at Anime Jungle every other weekend and then that was added to the credits. But we had already filmed the reviews a couple months earlier. For television, everything is shot out of order at different times. For example, I filmed at the maid cafe about 2 months ago and it was just put into episode 4.
