The Official Twitter App for Android!

There's no shortage of ways to express yourself in 140 characters with your Android phone, and now there's a FREE official Twitter app for 2.1 users. Stephanie Chu gives you the demo!

Between Twidroid, Seesmic, Hootsuite and more, there's no shortage of apps to help you share your thoughts, photos and links 140 characters at a time. So naturally, it makes sense that Twitter has a new official app, and this release for Android 2.1 users is today's FREE hot app.

The basics of this eye-pleasing Twitter app like recent tweets, direct messages, at replies, lists, and more are covered well within a smooth design, but the standout feature is really the integrated experience. Not only can you access tweets from within the app, but you'll also be able to see the latest on a map, from your personal phone book, or any app that uses Android's QuickContact bar.

This app packs a nice punch, but I did find that if you manage multiple Twitter accounts, you won't want to abandon Hootsuite just yet.

However, the Official Twitter app is really only on version 1, and we can look forward to a lot of development in the future. According to Twitter's blog, they are "thrilled that Google will be open sourcing the code used in this app in the near future. We look forward to the amazing experiences developers will create using Twitter APIs in their upcoming Android apps." Developers, start your engines!
