In this week's episode of AppJudgment, David Prager reviews the popular "Getting Things Done" Apps: Things and OmniFocus.
"Getting Things Done" is one of the most popular productivity methodologies created by a guy named David Allen.
If you're like me, you have a zillion ideas in your head, a bunch of things that you'd like to prioritize to get done, and you'd like to have an organized way to manage all of it - that's what "Getting Things Done" is designed to help you do.
In this episode, we'll explore the two most popular apps for "Getting Things Done", Things and Omnifocus.
Review by: David Prager
Version 1.3.11 | Developed by Cultured Code | $9.99
PROS:
- Excellent ability to create tasks quickly and organize them on the fly
- Good prioritization of tasks and sub-categories within projects
- Easy and convenient to sort categories of tasks with tags
CONS:
- Only syncs to the desktop app via LAN
- Not accessible via the cloud
- Pricey, especially if paired with the $49 desktop app
- if you want strict adherence to "Getting Things Done" methodology, Things is not your app
Version 1.5.3 | Developed by The Omni Group | $19.99
PROS:
- Based fully on the battle tested "Getting Things Done" methodology
- Organizing tasks by context is very handy
- Project management and sub-task capabilities are great
CONS:
- Pricey $20 for the iPhone app, $79 for the desktop app
- Too many sub-categories and statuses to cross label tasks and projects
- Seemingly impossible to go back and undo or see completed tasks
This app grants you access to a huge archive of live and rare music dating back as early as 1959! Check out Wolfgang's Vault.
Changing the way you get things done is definitely a noticeable paradigm shift. There's a necessary learning curve involved in taking advantage of a good application. It's actually more work in the beginning - but the payoff should be substantial.
