" We have some wonderful and Kevin -- Twitter joining us here today as well."
" Thank you for being here today thanks for having me. So we should just first mention that this is going to be on cold there report that he is I was just now reading this week he's in the green room just talked to Steve and sorry that -- here with us today nine New York I don't know I insisted that I retire is often Veronica off and it is pathetic people there I. You have personally been at the forefront of a lot of that went to plant technologies mean -- Blogger we had no idea doing a whole podcasting thing. And now we've got Twitter which is basically almost becoming synonymous with email and blocking these days and people thing we're doing the Twitter thing. And say it's grown huge too I mean celebrities are using all the time to directly connect with their fans. As well as just everyday people not even people who are tied directly -- the web communities. I mean I remember when I first started out also optimistic to -- community thing has just blown up. The congratulations on the gift we've we've been very fortunate to be. Part of something that senses taken off so fast becoming a couple little subculture in. So I'm on my first Christmas viewers how Twitter evolved from its original design I mean recently guys added people search function into -- replies. Conceived retreats and things that are connected to your name what else has changed."
" Of the product actually. Has he changed very little in the last couple years mostly because. The vast majority of our resources have had a going to just keeping up with Grossman. What has changed quite a bit and where the product has changes in our how we think about it. And it at first and even if you have a homepage put -- now we still describe it as sort of a social networking texting stay in touch with friends and co workers. And what we realized over time is that. It's it's really about keeping up with what's happening in the world right now among things you care. And so part of that is your friends your family your co workers but part of it may be what people are sane about. A big event about what 2.0 experts going on war or it. A summit or a Super Bowl in so we're trying to build dot aspect in the product more and that's where we're we're testing the search. As more integral part of the product and devolution will be more along those lines. How people been responding to having search built into replies has been mostly positive. It's then the vast majorities and positive yes. I was always kind of confused and I think it's still -- little confusing how replies work. It's one of and going back tears your previous question how the product has evolved ways house chains have mostly been user driven the whole concept of replies wasn't in the product of first. In users wanted wanted to way to address someone else so someone just started doing that out. Apt symbol in the username. And it never occurred to us -- people start doing in so we -- well that's that signifies -- user let's make that link to the user and then. How do we make these work in the product so it's continuously evolving what we're trying to do to support what people are apparently trying to do."
" Are you surprised that the way that people are using Twitter I mean other than just communicating and sending messages back and forth he surprised that the way. People living using it as a promotional tool and things like that work constantly surprised -- and."
" It's it's amazing every day we see uses that surprises from. The businesses have been using a lot which isn't terribly surprising about how they're using it as little surprising from. Dole and embracing the very early on this send deals and Twitter only coupons and -- little businesses. Just became aware of one. Here in San Francisco it's a spy and it houses slot open on their massage really table says -- they'll say you know Colin look right now for the 3 o'clock near get thirty dollars off. And it makes sense to send us."
" This and that -- me later I would think that's -- of we had some questions from on the actual Twitter users as well because he thought that would be appropriate and this is especially good for people here at the web 2.0 expo. And Josh -- wants to know any recommendations for people trying to start tech startups who has obviously a lot of experience about."
" Well that's that's a big topic for us. And I think that the court thing we just be do something awesome I mean and track. Teasing you don't suck dungeons and you know I mean try not to get caught up in in that echo chamber and I think it's. I think that's probably the toughest thing when you're trying to break out and do something. Original it. A lot of things are evolutionary. And and it's easy to get tied up in way. -- subculture thinks and that there's lots of -- businesses that can be built there but I think that's where a lot of people -- spin wheels and I've been caught up there before. And when would have more successful things when it just back to basics what do I want what do I want to see in the world secret."
" it's interesting especially when you get caught up and that echo chamber because they're kind of here early core audience and I think he sent -- then you know you also have to kind of make things support mainstream audience as well might not have the same needs and desires as hardcore --"
" Yet that's tricky and move we definitely saw that with blogger for a long time that -- early bloggers were core audience and we just really want to create the product for them and they were us. And there's a point which we had to say. Okay we can't necessarily serve them as well as someone else but there's a very big audience of mainstream --"
" There's some real answer them so the next question is from Napa town and DP I don't know -- that sounds delightful. I'll what's your opinion on the new FaceBook and their redesign. Today redesigned alone."
" We'll look at a."
" Is great I mean -- I don't. I I use FaceBook and lots of friends and -- but I hate it makes a lot of sense to me what they didn't. And I don't know if what I don't I'm not a hardcore FaceBook users but. I am very impressed philosophy did we wanna but they've -- a bunch of stuff that we want to do has been on our road maps of."
" That's correct -- that's something you would want to kind of -- more towards the next question was from Al gone -- is Spanish for them gone. And -- hit -- do you see Twitter becoming a platform like it's."
" Well it depends on the definition of a platform yeah -- it. And we have hundreds possibly thousands of developers who build on Twitter today. So by some people's definition that would be a platform we have companies that are getting funded that are based on -- stock -- raising money in entirely votes on Twitter there's. Several other companies that are both building products exclusively for Twitter and and building actual businesses doing so. We a lot of has been really just. Organic and and we haven't done a lot to you other than putting the API out there very early answering people's questions we have done a lot to. I'm support as much as we'd like to but that's one of initiatives internally. To help both developers and users to mention the consistent."
" I'm I'm just wondering with so many people building off the API especially building businesses around that. What to be done without the rate limit and that they're calling to the API so much and that kind of getting blocked after a little while."
" It's something and were continually trying to increase and it's it's been tricky because. When you don't have control over the interfaces and then. Just computers making enormous amounts of requests. And if it was unlimited -- no way we can survive right so. We're trying to get more intelligent about that but. And we're training Chris capacity overall their house to be some sort of rate limit or else. You know just run away scripts can take our server down but. It's something we've increased a couple times and planned increase more and maybe get more sophisticated about."
" Would be something that maybe you could work specifically with a specific company and then kind of let them have free range for the rate limit while limiting -- telling -- I'm I'm totally."
" We have done that actually -- yeah we've had a white list in there's not technically wireless there's just different levels and what we. Did have was your either limited. Like you know this much or you get whatever you want. And those and we're pretty liberal about giving putting people on a white list but then some of those caused problems that we had to get a little bit more. Sophisticated in there are API team is still just two developers now there's one -- supporting them in turn answered questions. It's it's a big project to support these thousands of other developers and there were part of it."
" So the next one is from. User names -- so impossible to say tickle our land your. Of course any future support for images or video -- I've seen some kind of mashups of that the past but never anything officially sanctioned."
" Yeah I think which is the support images or video better than we -- today in the doesn't necessarily mean we want to host them we mind if we think that's the best thing. For users there's some neat places to poster images and video though I don't know if people want to differ wandered just a better. Better immigration link viewing in line maybe -- in line. Twit -- it's gotten really popular it seems to be the leader right now but I think there's other companies that offer similar functionality. Obviously I don't necessarily want to get in competition with YouTube and say bring your videos on Twitter instead. But Twitter is really just a it's like. Lubricant for for web content and so we can make it more efficient and make it faster to view things. I'd like that as a users will think about that."
" Here's a question that's very relevant my interests you stone says how can Simon monetize based on spreading Twitter following."
" And you should track what you want want to sponsor Monica's Twitter. I don't know we eat we would support people -- to do that and there are people doing that. And -- world for state -- long as people build a following days and are delivering value to those those people that keep following them in -- Build -- business out of that dislike people build the business is out of blogging. Back in the day it seem like blasphemy. And then you realize -- this is just publishing and can be done professionally as well as. Casually and there's an informal."
