How do you watch our shows?

October 19th, 2007 at 11:29 by Jeff Rizzo in Viewer Polls

Hi!

For those of you (OK, that’s virtually all of you) who don’t know who I am, I’m in charge of the Technology group here at Revision3 - the folks who bring you the website, and encode video into various formats to help enable you to watch our shows the way you want to. We’re all pretty excited about some of the changes in store for the next weeks and months - some small, some considerably larger.

The reason for this post today is to gather some information from you, our viewers. As most of you know, we offer our shows in a variety of different downloadable formats as well as view-in-browser Flash video. As players and viewing patterns change, we want to make sure we stay on top of things so we can help you have the viewing experience you want. Some of the newer codecs (if you don’t know what a codec is, don’t worry!) are also gaining wider cross-platform support, and we have the opportunity to take advantage of this to streamline the numbers of codecs and containers we offer, while still increasing the number of different ways people can enjoy our shows. In order to do this, though, we need you to tell us how you watch us! We’ve set up a poll in our forums (thanks, Chuck!) that you can see here:

Poll: How do you watch Revision3 shows?

In order to vote in the poll, you’ll need to be logged in. If you don’t have an account yet, you can sign up on our registration page. (You can use your login to do other things, such as comment on this post, too)

We’ll leave the poll open for a few weeks, but we’ll probably start incorporating feedback from it sooner than that. (Like, probably within a week - we’re eager to get started!) We’ve got some great ideas how we can enable you to watch our shows the way you prefer to, and at the same time make it easier for us to deliver the shows to you.

Stay tuned for more, and thanks for watching Revision3!

Jeff Rizzo, CTO

I typically watch all the shows with VLC Player and I get together with friends to watch Diggnation on a TV (laptop hooked up to the TV).

I used to watch directly from the rev3 pages…but now I use itunes and get them in HD when I can, and watch on my tv via dvi/hdmi off my macbookpro.

Used to use Liferea to download the Theora feeds when it was offered. Haven’t updated to a new feed, since none are offered in a non-patent-encumbered format.

I download the m4v to my PSP or download th XviD and transcode it to 3gp to watch on my blackberry

    XviD encodings now broken

I have been downloading your shows in “XviD-small” for a long time now, but recently your latest shows will not play video (just audio). Am using Win Media Player 9 and XviD codec v1.1.3. Specifically “infected–0045–glitter–small.xvid.avi” and “pixelperfect–0054–retouching–small.xvid.avi” will not play and WMP displays a codec error. All the older XviD shows previously downloaded still play just fine.

What gives? Have you changed something in your encoding process?

    Regards,
    digiguru

I use Totem and I use the low resolution theora video files to view the show.

Typically I watch them on my 60″ 1080P TV. Currently I use an AppleTV to do that, but I have used several devices over time. When I travel, I fall back to a laptop.
