Watch Revision3 on your XBox360 or PS3

January 26th, 2009 at 11:21 by Ron Richards in Shows

There’s nothing cooler than watching Revision3 shows on your TV. There are a lot of easy ways to do so (AppleTV, DiVX Connected Box etc.) but we know how many of you are avid gamers and have an XBox360 or a PlayStation3, so wouldn’t it be cool if you could use those devices to watch shows like Diggnation, Tekzilla or the Totally Rad Show on? Well now you can.

We’ve partnered with the fine people at GridNetworks to enable you to utilize your XBox360, PlayStation3 or any media device (that is UPnP enabled) to stream Diggnation, Tekzilla and the Totally Rad Show from your networked computer to your TV! It’s really easy, all you have to do is click over to the Revision3 on Gridcast TV page with all the information, install some software and then you’ll be all set!

We’re trying out this service to see if it’s something we want to use for all our shows, so please let us know what you think of it!

thanks.

Love It. no problems with it at all once I got past the installation (it didnt want to take and/or acknowledge that it took, even though it did), and once i understood that the watch on tv button meant that I could just go and watch it on my tv, … I thought i hit the button for all the channels I wanted to add, and kept reinstalling the software, which didn’t acknowledge in anyway that it was installed or show that it was running in the tray or anything (its running but totally invisible). I wish I could install it on my router running dd-wrt or on my NAS so I didnt have to have a computer on 24/7, but it is pretty sweet none the less, and saves me a ton of downloads

Miro downloads my video HD podcasts “automagicly”. Then TVersity takes care of streaming off to my PS3.

Still it’s pretty cool to have access to a new option out there.

why not just download and put on usb drive and plug into 360 or stream from your videos folder (with media sharing enabled)??

  4. frankyT says:

i like this service bc i’m lazy. i don’t have to bother downloading any shows to my pc or usb drive. the shows just show up on their upnp thing.

i love that i can ffwd through the show unlike the playon crap! and this is free? yeah! :))

It looks like it has a lot of potential but there are some problems. I watched the Diggnation clip show again with GridCast and it was very simple and had goof quality. I wasn’t able to get Windows Media Center to play through my 360 even after hours of fiddling with all kinds of settings, and this worked right away. However, the current episodes aren’t available. If they could get the episodes up on Gridcast at the same time or at least same day as they are up on Rev3, it would be awesome.

I’ll second phoenixp3k and say that it’s nice to see Rev3 trying new distribution methods, but I don’t really see the point. I’m not a 360 owner, so this might fill a niche/need for 360 people… For PS3 owners, it’s already easy to just go to the web browser and watch or download the episode in HD glory from the sidebar — I can usually just watch it as it downloads too so there’s no wait for a nice image too.

Nonetheless, nice to see. I just with Sony would let me subscribe to RSS feeds so it’ll automatically download things for me.

360 and PS3 owners aren’t exactly niche… Pretty much everyone college or high school aged has one. I like how you don’t have to go through downloading the episode and taking extra steps to get it on to my 360, so it has lots of potential.

I’m curious on what resolution the video is? I already have a Apple TV and I can automatically get all of the HD shows in 1280 x 720 at 24fps which plays fine on the apple TV. I would consider this service if I could get 1080p content using the PS3 instead.

Personally I just subscribe to the HD Quicktime RSS feeds of the shows I am interested in and have the episodes downloaded to a folder that my DLNA (UPnP) media server uses.
The HD QT files are PS3 compatible out of the box, so it isn’t technically necessary to use any special software (or to do any transcoding).

However, I do think that this is a good move, because I think Rev3’s idea that people are interested in watching especially the longer shows on their TV sets is correct, and I also think the assumption that many Rev3 viewers have a PS3 or an Xbox360 is totally correct, so making this work as easily as possible seems like the smart thing to do.

As for what resolution the content is, I would think that it’s the same as what is available for download on the Rev3 site (and through RSS), which is 720p @ 24fps. I wouldn’t be surprised if the exact same files are used, as these seem to be compatible already.

Great, great service. It saves me the hassle of downloading the shows. I’ll echo a couple of the comments above, and say that if the shows were released to gridcast in conjunction with their release on Rev3, it would be perfect. Great to start with the big 3, but hopefully the rest of the lineup can be added, too.

  11. bogeybob says:

I think the service worked okay on my PS3, but I still think it easier for me to just go right to the web browser and go to the rev3 site, which is under my favorites, and stream all the videos, and the video still looks great on my 42″ LCD. But I agree with previous posts that it’s cool that rev3 is trying new distribution methods. I watch sometimes from my Tivo as well.

  12. whatsit says:

I’ll add my thumbs up. I love being able to browse through Revision3 content with the PS3’s video menu instead of the sometimes unreliable built-in web browser.

So, please, put more shows out there. I’d love to watch the other Revision3 offerings on my TV, too. I’d also love to see the shows release quicker.

Anyway, fantastic distribution method; please keep it coming!

I just watched TRS EP98 via Gridcast, and let me say it was a FANTASTIC viewing experience. I watched it via Xbox 360 and not only was the quality superb, I much preferred the viewing experience over my handheld device.

I highly encourage Rev3 to advertise this feature more, especially since most of their audience owns Xbox 360s and PS3s.

  14. carlos28355 says:

im loving it…right now im only able to view trs tekzilla and diggnation is that all thats offered currently? i was watching diggnation and it gave me a video format error?????

  15. ulysses6 says:

Just got an X360 and discovered this service. I love not having to d/l the shows and the quality is great. Add more shows though!

  16. jojira says:

Free and easy, I love it. Now I don’t have to plug in my laptop to watch these shows on the big screen.

One comment would be to have the GridCast chapters line up with the show’s chapter system. This might not be possible, but its my only comment.
