DISCOVERY COMMUNICATIONS TO ACQUIRE TOP DIGITAL VIDEO PROVIDER REVISION3

Purchase Will Bolster Discovery’s Leadership in Creating & Delivering Content Across All Screens

(Silver Spring, Md.) – Discovery Communications announced today that it has entered into an agreement to acquire San Francisco-based digital video provider Revision3. Leveraging Revision3’s vast experience in creating engaging online video content in a cost-effective manner, the transaction helps fuel Discovery’s strategy of being the number one nonfiction media company on all screens.

“Discovery’s mission to ignite viewers’ curiosity and its history of pioneering new platforms – from cable to HD to 3D – make it the logical leader in this explosive new wave of digital video growth,” said JB Perrette, Chief Digital Officer, Discovery Communications, who made today’s announcement. “With Revision3’s industry-leading management team and roster of great talent, we look forward to cultivating more original content and fresh personalities that resonate with passionate communities online and across all platforms, while enhancing our innovative marketing solutions for advertising partners.”

The leading independent Internet digital video production company, with more than 23 million monthly unique viewers across 27 digital channels, Revision3 has created a technology and distribution platform that powers the scalable production, monetization and distribution of video content for passionate online communities. With programs hosted by authentic online celebrities, including top bloggers, Twitter stars and YouTube sensations, the company’s content aligns with many of Discovery’s top linear program genres, such as tech, cooking and popular science. Revision3 boasts one of the 10 largest networks on YouTube and distribution with more than 40 other partners including iTunes, Google, AOL, Yahoo!, TiVo, Roku, Boxee, CNET and Zune.

“Revision3 has always focused on creating compelling programs featuring authentic hosts that sit at the center of engaged and targeted communities,” said Jim Louderback, CEO of Revision3. “We’re huge fans of Discovery’s networks, and couldn’t imagine a more appropriate company to team up with to develop the future of original web-based video.”

Revision3 was founded in 2005 by Kevin Rose (Digg, TechTV), Jay Adelson (Digg, Equinix) and David Prager (TechTV). Louderback, former editor-in-chief of PC Magazine and a veteran of TechTV, joined Revision3 as CEO in 2007. Louderback and team will continue their leadership of Revision3 under the new ownership structure.

For this transaction, Discovery Communications was advised by Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, and Revison3 was advised by RBC Capital Markets and Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian, LLP.

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, and the parties expect the closing to occur on or before June 1.

Triune Films and Revision3 Launch New Comic Book Show: Variant

May 2nd, 2012 at 12:22 by Ryan Vance in Announcements, Press Releases, Shows

It’s my pleasure to announce the launch of Variant on Revision3. This show is the latest series from Triune Films, the team behind Film Riot and Film State. We’ve been working with Ryan Connolly (head of Triune) for almost three years now and by now you all know what I saw way back then: this guy produces great stuff. Variant is no exception.

Variant is a weekly news show about everything comic book related, including graphic novels, TV Shows, film, cons, and games. We’ll join host Arris Quinones as he explores new releases, adaptations of comics into other mediums, indie comics, artists, writers, and conferences. Special segments and projects will include animation of real world superheroes, fan created artwork and comics, and interviews and advice from experts.

All you have to do is watch any episode of Film Riot or Film State and you know that this show is going to have the same sense of humor and great production values that Ryan brings to any of his projects. There’s a definite need for a high quality show that is a resource for all you need to know about the comic world from week to week. Variant is going to fill that need!

Please go check out episode #1 here and subscribe for future episodes!

Revision3 Launches New Show with io9: We Come From The Future

April 13th, 2012 at 10:03 by Ryan Vance in Announcements, Press Releases, Shows

It’s my pleasure to announce the launch of the latest Revision3 show: io9: We Come From The Future! This show is a collaboration between Revision3 and io9. We’ve had a blast developing out this show and I think everyone is really going to like it.

As many of you know, io9 is the wildly popular science/sci-fi website. As they put it: “io9 is entertainment, science, and futuristic culture for people who want to escape the everyday.” Our show is based on the editorial of the site and is hosted by the actual editor-in-chief of io9, Annalee Newitz and io9 writer Esther Inglis-Arkell. This show is all about staying true to the voice and vision of the site while bringing a new dimension to the content. For one thing, we’re bringing it off the page and into video! You’ll be able to watch the show on their site as well as right here on Revision3.com.

The show will bring you news, stories and experiments from a tomorrow that you wish you lived today. The inaugural episode includes a review of Joss Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods, an experiment that turns a pickle into a lightbulb and speculation on how dark matter effects our bodies.

We’ve really enjoyed collaborating with Annalee and Esther as we’ve developed out this show format and production. Tekzilla producer Roger Chang has been instrumental in getting this show going for you, as has Matt Labate, our head of development. I’d like to thank those guys for their hard work along with Annalee and Esther and am excited for all of us viewers to be able to enjoy the fruits of that labor.

io9, We Come From The Future has a big future in front of it and we’re excited to be a part of it.
