Great New Show, Cool New Web Feature!

August 10th, 2009 at 04:19 by Jim Louderback in Announcements, Shows, Website

Dog days of summer? What dog days of summer?

Here at Revision3, we’re cranking it up like it was October, not August. We’ve got two huge announcements today, one that brings you great new functionality to our website, and another that brings you a wonderful new show to watch.

BRAND NEW SHOW: Let’s start with the new show! I’m proud to announce that today we’re launching AppJudgment, which will bring you reviews of mobile phone applications, including those for the iPhone, Android phones, Blackberry, Pre and even Windows Mobile.

This show is a little different for Revision3, as it sits somewhere in between our longer form shows like HD Nation and Tekzilla, and our shorter, daily Tekzilla Tip of the Day. We’ll be releasing new episodes of AppJudgment three times a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and each will generally run between two and four minutes. Each episode will focus on either a single application, or 2-4 apps in the same category. It’s a little like what you might see as a segment on Tekzilla, but in this case we’re releasing it as its own show.

Why not just do one a week with three segments? In part, because we think the shorter form segments more closely match how many people view videos online. Video viewing habits are changing – while many people like full shows, other simply like watching a few minutes, focused on a single topic, and then prefer to surf elsewhere – in effect rolling their own programs.

But whichever way you like, we’ve got the solution for you. If you like shorter, specific segments, watch AppJudgment every day. And if you’d rather watch longer shows, simply subscribe via iTunes, Miro, TiVo or many other services, and watch once a week. The effect, as it were, will be almost the same.

Oh, and we’ve also developed separate feeds for each platform – so if you’d rather just get the iPhone app reviews, you can select just that feed. Beware though – you won’t be able to see what you’re missing. Rumor has it that a future episode will focus on Google Voice – so controversial, it was banned from the iPhone!

Oh, and another thing makes AppJudgment a little different for us. Instead of having a single host – or two hosts – AppJudgment is delivered via an ensemble cast of Revision3 employees. A wide range of our employees have pitched in to make the show great – you’ll see Patrick Norton and Ron Richards, but you’ll also see reviews from David Prager, Stephanie Chu, Mauricio Balvanera, Annie Gaus and others from the company too. Oh, and the show is produced by Eileen Rivera, who also handles production on Scam School and The Digg Reel! Keep watching, you’ll never know who might show up to talk about their favorite – or most hated – cellphone application!

You can watch AppJudgment here, or on any of our great distribution partners!

COOL NEW WEB FEATURE: And that brings me to our next announcement, a cool new web feature that brings the segment approach you see in AppJudgment to all of our shows at Revision3. This great new web feature now lets us create segments inside of each of our shows – that you can jump to, watch over and over again, and share with your friends.

Here’s how it works – and I’ll use the latest Diggnation as an example, but soon all of our shows will be segmentized going forward. Check out the latest episode of Diggnation viewable below. As you watch it online, you’ll notice that just below the player, in the Show Notes area, are a list of segment names. These “Segments” – or chapters, if you think like a DVD – correspond to each of the stories discussed in this episode of Diggnation, along with any other hilarity that might occur outside of a news story.

Click on the segment name and you’ll jump to a description of the segment. Click on the Play button and you’ll jump to the beginning of that segment, inside of our player, where you can start watching immediately.

But that’s not all. Our video player timeline now includes little dots, which indicate the start of each segment. Hover over the markers and you’ll see a pop-up segment description (thanks to Rob Sandie, and the Viddler team, for pioneering this innovation). Click on the marker, and again you’ll jump just to the start of that segment.

Want to see the segments in the player, while you watch the video? Again, if you hover over the video as it is playing, you’ll see a row of buttons to the right. We’ve added a new one to “Share”, “Embed”, “Discuss” and “More Videos”. It’s (you probably guessed this already) called “Segments”. Click on it and you’ll see a list of all the segments, with your show video to the left.

If you love watching our shows, and don’t want anything to do with this segment stuff, don’t worry! We haven’t changed the basic viewing experience. But if you’d like to just watch that cool Blu-Ray player review, or twitter about Kevin and Alex talking about how humans actually emit light (a real segment this week), we’ve made it drop-dead simple to do so.

Oh, and this is just a start. In a few days it’ll be even easier to share these segments with your friends, and promote them on Digg and other social news services. We’re really excited about the new features, and I encourage you to play around with them, and let us know what you think in the forums.

And a big thanks to our tremendous web team, who delivered this great new functionality in such a cool, elegant and useful way!

Welcome to the New Revision3.com

May 20th, 2009 at 01:50 by Ron Richards in Announcements, Website

We are very pleased and excited to welcome you to the new brand new Revision3.com! Revision3.com has gone through several iterations since we first began back in 2005, and this website represents the 4th version of Revision3.com and I’m pretty sure you’ll agree that it’s the best one yet.

So just what exactly has changed? Practically everything! Here’s a brief summary of the changes to the site with Revision3.com version 4.0 that you can expect:

Updated Design - It’s a brand new site with a brand new interface. Every section and page of the site has been redesigned and improved from the previous version. In addition, we’ve made navigation easier on the site so you can get around and find what you want. We’ve even given some love to the forums, so it’s fresh, new and ready to be used.

BIGGER & Better Video - We’ve increased the size of our video player, so now when you’re watching your favorite show, it truly is an entertaining experience. We’ve also added some cool features like the ability to pop out the player to another window or to put it in theater mode and make the video really pop.

User Preferences - We want to make the Revision3 website the site YOU want it to be, each and every one of you. To do that, we’ve begun expanding the User Preferences section to allow for customization of what you see and how you use revision3.com. Admittedly there isn’t much there right now but from what is there, you should get the general idea of what will be coming. Expect to see this area expanded on the most over the upcoming weeks, so make sure you register and log in to the site when you visit.

Enhanced Shows and Host Pages - We’ve redesigned all the show pages so that it’s easier to browse and find your favorite episodes. We’ve also worked to make sure our search functionality gives you the results your looking for. It’s also easier to find information about your favorite show host, such as the link to the their blog, Facebook Profile or whatever other social network they may be on.

Twitter! - Twitter’s everywhere these days, so why not Revision3? You may notice that we’ve worked with our friends at SquareSpace to create a Revision3 Twitter directory so it’s easy to find everyone from Revision3 on Twitter. We’ve also integrated the Twitter feeds of our hosts on their pages so you can see what they’re up to, minute by minute.

Under The Hood - For those of you interested in how things work, a lot of the changes and improvements come from behind the scenes. Previously, as many of you know, we were using WordPress for our content management needs. As we’ve grown, we’ve outgrown WordPress as a solution. Don’t get us wrong, we still love WordPress and still use it for our blog, but for running the site, we learned a lot from using it and have evolved beyond its capabilities. Now we’re running an internally produced content management system that was built on a PHP based MVC framework. And what’s even better is that we’re primed to grow from here, making it easy to add new features and functionality later on (hint hint).

As I said, we’re immensely excited for the site. Personally I love the new look and I love how bright the future looks for Revision3.com. We’re going to be building from here and creating some cool features for all Revision3 fans to come and enjoy. We hope you like the new site as much as we do, and please let us know what you think either by e-mailing us or on the forums.

I’d like to take a moment and put the spotlight on the awesome team here at Revision3 that labored for months to bring you the new Revision3.com - Stephanie Chu, Ryan LaBarre, Jeff Rizzo, Chuck Siu, Brendan White and a few others who are unfortunately no longer with us here at Revision3. All your hard work and dedication has absolutely paid off and I hope all the loyal Revision3 fans join me in applauding you.

thanks.

Vote Diggnation in the Webby’s

April 23rd, 2009 at 10:25 by Ron Richards in Announcements

Webby AwardsAs you may have seen on a recent episode of The Totally Rad Show, we’re immensely honored and flattered to hear that Diggnation was nominated for a Webby Award in the 13th annual Webby Awards!

Nominated for an award in the Online Film & Video: Technology category, Diggnation is up against some great shows like CNET TV and Boing Boing TV and others. No matter who wins, it’s great to see such great shows get recognized.

But it doesn’t stop there! Last year, Diggnation won the People’s Choice Award for best show in the Online Film & Video: Technology category and we’d love to see the Diggnation fanbase represent again and help us bring home the Webby again! So this is where you can get involved.

Head over to the Webby’s People Choice voting site, register and cast your ballot for Diggnation! Diggnation is for you, the loyal audience and we can’t do it without you - we appreciate your support!

In addition to Diggnation, Revision3 was recognized as Official Honorees in Online Film & Video: Systm for the How-To and DIY category and the Totally Rad Show for the Variety category. It’s great to see our shows get noticed and recognized as more and more people jump on the Internet TV bandwagon and watch our great shows.

Thanks!

Vote for Diggnation!

CO-OP Lands at Revision3

March 9th, 2009 at 05:48 by Ryan Vance in Announcements, Shows

There are times when my job is easy. The moment the Area5 (CO-OP) guys came to our office for their first meeting, I knew this show needed to be on Revision3. I’ve been a longtime fan of their work at 1UP and their new show is a huge creative leap forward. With that, I’d like to officially extend a HUGE welcome to our friends at CO-OP, the latest show to launch on the Revision3 network.

Matt, Ryan, Cesar, Jason, Rob and JayFresh have been working tirelessly to keep their show going independently through their new company, Area5. We are thrilled to give them a new home here at Revision3 and help them take their video game show to the next level. I can honestly say that this is a fantastic and dedicated group of guys and their talent is clear when you watch CO-OP. They have found an extremely engaging and entertaining way to talk about games with insiders who are actually their friends.

Check out this week’s premiere episode which is up now and the new episodes will be launching every Tuesday from here on out.
