The Philip DeFranco Show Joins Revision3!

January 6th, 2012 at 11:09 by Ryan Vance in Announcements, Press Releases, Shows

Anyone watching the online video space over the past couple of years has seen the explosion of YouTube and the elevation of YouTube creators into legitimate stars. One of the biggest stars among them is Philip DeFranco. He was one of the first “vloggers” and remains not only one of the most popular, but one of the best. His point of view continues to be whip smart as he hilariously deconstructs all the day’s news. It’s this point of view that had amassed him a dedicated audience of 2 million subscribers on YouTube.

We first met Phil at SXSW 2011. I was immediately struck by how smart and humble he is, while having a true vision for himself and his business (which employs a number of talented people). Phil is extremely careful and savvy about how he approaches every decision and every move he makes with his shows. He’s helped launch the careers of a number of top YouTubers and has launched a number of extremely popular channels on the platform. He’s got a nose for talent and “what’s next” that few in this entire industry share. He’s become a friend over these past months and I’m extremely excited to be working with him so closely.

I encourage our audience to check out Phil’s show if you haven’t already. I think you’ll soon make him a part of your daily routine.

Meanwhile please join me in welcoming him to the Revision3 family of shows! We’re excited to have Phil and his production team, including Matty, James and Dani on board!

One Little Green Robot To Rule Them All…

Revision3 App on an HTC Sensation

Fragmentation? What fragmentation?

With today’s release of our Revision3 Android App (version 1.1.2), we’ve successfully used the Android SDKs (out of the box, no special tweaking, we promise) to create a single Android application that runs across:

  • Android mobile devices, versions 2.x and higher
  • Android tablet devices, versions 3.x and higher
  • GoogleTV running Android 3.x and higher
  • Revision3 App running on Google TV 2.0
    Google TV 2.0

The experience across all devices is optimized for the specific device: everything from thumbnails to the resolution of the video is optimized to the size, shape, user input device (finger, mouse or remote control) and bandwidth of the device that is running the application. Now that Logitech has released its gTV 2.0 update for the Revue this week, the Revision3 app is downloadable from the gTV Android Market – try it out, it looks gorgeous.

    REVISION3 IS NOW ON FIRE!!!

December 13th, 2011 at 10:24 by Jim Louderback in Announcements, Press Releases

We’re rolling out a native Amazon Kindle Fire App.

I’m excited to announce that as of today, Revision3 is embracing Amazon’s new Kindle tablet and platform in a huge way. We’ve rolled out a spiffy new Revision3 app that looks and works great on the native Kindle Fire.

We’ve been incredibly impressed with Amazon’s new Kindle. Sure, the $200 cost is great, but with a real 16×9 great looking screen, the Fire offers the ultimate media consumption device for Revision3′s viewers.

Here at Revision3, our viewers have been adamant about wanting to watch our great content on every device from the smallest smart phone to the biggest smart TV. We’ve been working hard to make apps look and work great on Apple’s IOS, Android phones and tablets, smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Vizio and more – and now Amazon’s breakthrough Kindle Fire.

Ultimately, we don’t want to limit our viewers to a specific or narrow set of devices. Amazon’s new Kindle Fire offers a great solution for many viewers – and we’re proud to be an integral partner at launch! So if you have a Fire, download our app and enjoy your favorite Revision3 shows on this great new device. But even if you don’t, rest assured that we’re committed to bringing you our content on whatever device you love.

Notes From the Engine Room: Improving the Experience

November 17th, 2011 at 06:02 by Rob DeMillo in Announcements, Press Releases, Website

It’s been a busy fall here in the Revision3 engine room, and we have two new experiences appearing just in time for your winter enjoyment. (Assuming, you know, you have winter enjoyment where you live.)

    Revision3.com HTML5 Player

You’ve been asking for this ever since the iPad first saw the light of day, and we would have loved to have given it to you sooner – but it wasn’t practical until now. Until recently, HTML5 still needed some time in the oven, and features that you knew and loved in our existing Flash player weren’t possible. In addition, the mix of codecs required for each browser condition was a daunting task…

    HTML5 Codec Chart

HTML5 Codec/Browser Matrix (thanks to the folks at http://diveintohtml5.com)

Our goal was to keep the HTML5 viewing experience the same as the Flash viewing experience on Revision3.com, but we believe we’ve done better than that. Our new HTML5 player has broken new ground in HTML5 playback, including features like full screen mode, pop-outs, and segment jumps. Oh, and did we mention that it’s faster to load than our Flash player?

    HTML5 Player

Revision3′s new player was built from the ground up to cover as wide a footprint of device and browser combinations as possible. As long as you have a compatible browser (see the chart above), the HTML5 player will load and operate on PCs, Macs or Linux machines. Note, Firefox is currently not supported, but its coming soon! On mobile devices, we have you covered – the Revision3 HTML5 is the player invoked by both iOS and Android devices, and yes…that’s both phones and tablets. (Those of you with Windows Phone 7 devices, stay tuned – we won’t forget about you, either.)

What happens if you don’t have one of the browser or mobile versions we mentioned? Well you don’t get to watch our videos! Uh…ok, not really – our servers will detect the browser and device type you are using and, if it doesn’t support HTML5, it will present the Flash player to you. Basically, you don’t have to do anything except sit back and enjoy Revision3.

Incidentally, if for some reason the HTML5 player isn’t to your liking, and you never want to see it, just log-in to Revision3.com, select the “Preferences” menu, then select the “Site Preferences” tab, and disable “HTML5″ VoilĂ , you get the Flash player back.

    Revision3′s Army of Android Applications

We’ve been leaking these out slowly over the last month, but you need to check out Revision3′s new suite of Android applications. Available and optimized for every conceivable flavor of Android and every Android device, be it phone, tablet or GoogleTV 2.0, we have you covered! (“Fragmentation? We don’t need no stinking fragmentation!”) We even have a version of our Revision3 app optimized for the new Amazon Kindle Fire…and it’s beautiful.

The phone and tablet versions are available as we speak in both the Android Marketplace, the Kindle Fire’s Revision3 App will be available in the Amazon App Store before this week is out, and the GoogleTV 2.0 version will be available as the new GoogleTV upgrades rollout to the Sony and Logitech devices. Note: the GoogleTV 2.0 Application is only the main Revision3 app, not individual apps for each of our shows.

    Introducing Hippie Glenn’s Toasted Donut

November 15th, 2011 at 09:00 by David Prager in Announcements, Press Releases, Shows

There has always been the proverbial man behind the scenes. Most franchises also have a face. “The Face of the Network” or “The Face of the Show”. It’s not often that the man behind the scenes is also “The Face Behind the Scenes”. Diggnation‘s man behind the scenes is Hippie Glenn, and to fans of Diggnation, the cameraman has become as recognizable as the hosts.

Glenn’s creativity is a force to be reckoned with. Here are just two examples that have come out of his work on Diggnation: a day editing Diggnation told in 2 minutes and Diggnation at SXSW 2010.

But that’s not the sole reason the camera so often gets turned on him. The camera always turns on Glenn because he has always got a Toasted Donut. When Kevin and Alex (the hosts of Diggnation) ever have a peculiar quandary or topic, Glenn is the first to interject with a unique and entertaining take. Got a stale donut? Just slice it in half, toast it, and it’s fresh as new.

As the regularly scheduled Diggnation series comes to a close, that contribution of Glenn’s to an old episode of Diggnation was the inspiration for the name the new weekly series featuring Glenn McElhose that we’re proud to launch today. The show will feature creative skits, weird stories, food, nutrition, health, travel, and interviews. All of them told through the unique lens of Hippie Glenn.

We’re thrilled about Glenn’s enthusiasm in allowing us to provide an outlet to express his stories, insights, philosophies, and overall creativity and hope you’ll come along for the ride.
