The Trick Behind The Trick

Brian Brushwood has created 52 versions of an interview with a man who goes by 52 different names. In each version, the man claims that a different card will be the inevitable choice. After your friend tells you which card he has chosen, you'll know which interview to show him based on the name system. And because your friend assumes that there's only one interview online and you've seen it prior to talking to him, he'll believe it!

The Name System

The suit of the card will determine the title of the expert interviewed.

  • Diamonds = Doctor
    Diamonds = Doctor
  • Spades = Professor
    SPades = Professor
  • Hearts = Reverend
    HeaRts = Reverend
  • Clubs = Coach
    Clubs = Coach

And the number part will determine his name. The 13 numbers are divided into 3 groups. Each group corresponds to the last name of the expert:

  • 1-5
    Group 1: Singleton
  • 6-10
    Group 2: Doubleday
  • 11-13
    Group 3: Triplett

In each group, the 1st card will correspond with A, the 2nd card corresponds with B, and so on.

1 = A = Alfred  |  2 = B = Byron  |  3 = C = Charles  |  4 = D = David  |  5 = E = Edgar

We now have a method to translate any card in the deck to the name of our mysterious expert.
