1994 Part 2 -- Wolfenstein, Spider, Super Metroid
Monday, August 31st, 2009 running time 31:12
To know the future you must know the past and we prove it this week by delving into a classic. We keep it current thanks to some Nazi-Zombie killing and insect-adventure on the iPhone.
Segments
Yes, it is 1994 all over again thanks to JayFresh missing out on the Metroid classics the first time around. Such outrages will not stand! It was a good opportunity to bring back a classic and give it the full, CO-OP treatment. Would you want to see us cover more classic games like this, or should we just think of this as a one-off? Your feedback matters!
Wolfenstein: A Classic Reborn
Remakes of classic franchises are all the rage these days, and Wolfenstein is certainly the latest of these. Fortunately it's taken some cues from modern game design and proves to be able to stand proudly amongst its competition. BitMob's Dan Hsu, Arthur Gies from RebelFM & Eat. Sleep. Game. and 1UP's Justin Haywald talk it over with JayFresh.
Spider: Innovative Platforming on the iPhone
The iPhone continues to deliver evolutions in game design that are surprising and Spider is no exception. Ryan, Jason, and Cesar are all suitably impressed by the game's structure and unique approach to narrative.
Super Metroid: A Retro Review
Our recent coverage of Shadow Complex struck some extremely nostalgic chords here at Area 5 and when we found out that JayFresh's gaming education lacked a certain, related, classic franchise we knew it was time to bring back the past and present it as fresh! No pun intended. Also from 1UP and her own, classic-gaming blog Dusty Pixels, Jade Kraus pops in to talk with Dan Hsu, Justin Haywald, Ryan, and Fresh about just what a momentous occasion it was to experience Super Metroid for the first time!

And it was like this stuff as far from a lot of other games and she'll remind you sort of dark sector but I did like that would -- looked. -- actually see all the -- leveling off with a minute ago period you can see the bullets bounce off and annihilate everyone around here right exactly. When I first saw that small -- I was really excited I like your series. But I don't feel like the -- nearly as -- headed for years."
" Five seconds actually turn it on -- and."
" It's -- combined powers I would go into. Until roomful of entities and I would time Mike -- slow motion to -- to boost might damage in in this deal all at once. In any given night and only -- last for maybe 23 seconds. I'd be like a super -- hazardous -- your senses so this kind of cool actually dreaming of playing. Outside and just like there's as the running -- which I would've done I don't call him. What about that deal itself may run faster than this specific stuff you know like there. He intones in Kevin Landers and things like that but. The funny thing is like when you're saying you don't you actually isn't that much yeah I ease of all time. I hadn't it turned -- constantly it makes you faster it makes all the enemies pop out up why wouldn't you play what why would you. Not put that on I."
" Mike Sweeney -- look. They kind of just washes everything and that's not a pretty had a clue I needed to use the mail is like helpful and functional. That idea but otherwise I just want to look at the game that's the way it was an end choice for having that filter over it all the time. That's that's really what he's doing."
" I didn't like the way it looked -- I felt like I had to have not just because. Because of those groups because it makes you faster because it makes it easier to find enemy."
" It's not -- naturally conservative player when it comes to light a finite resource and I credit -- lot of schools around but occasionally there are times where it really forces you go long distance and so I'm always thinking okay I don't need -- Use of power -- here I can totally count then you're far away. Because it clicks targets like it doesn't help before our eyes have been on the left trigger. The combat. It's actually really fun you like the way the idea is an act the way the level the science generally really it's set up this sort of long Arenas that. The nice thing about the weapons in the game does that. Can tailor them to suit your needs player like I like being the -- with the sniper rifle and the guy -- machine gun death and."
" I -- thousands -- weapons tonight upgraded these kinds of profitable for all yeah. Debates and encourage you not to get these other weapons is that you're just gonna be wasting money you have this like two or three weapons that you. Constantly get an award those the ones you've you have to figure -- advancements and to cause you're gonna it's gonna waste all your money. On on Adam."
" Yeah I decide basically upgraded design -- all the way into the climate is different ideas I had this -- and then maybe forty and then yeah 43. I just -- all the way up I had some what did those. Short range combat as well into the I guess we don't it -- exactly the same thing -- I thought about it with the -- weapons but the result powerful like the -- plan forward the Tulsa gun. Particle can end -- L 44 they're all like this one hit killed -- Wiped out through -- enemies to super super powerful guys that like I would sit there goes up pretty quick. You know. I'm -- upgrades are nice -- yes that the ones that let you hold."
" Especially for the wolf alzheimer's yeah. You later reviewing creature -- violent six or seven. Like that when thrillers actually really is what I'm throwing the most useful whenever he's in the -- him along. It looks really good to the flames to look really nice and as well. -- about the -- Do you feel that they were balance well almost ever cross your heart you die at least once got to figure out their -- But I like that there were certain bosses we're became the most powerful weapon didn't necessarily -- and -- it was more about figuring out what you had to do and to kill them like the the general it's actually that you. Guys out of school. Yeah we had to change and show it real cool. Form if you like -- his spots were."
" I -- I got to the end of an overall I was really I mean I wasn't blown away wasn't -- like breaking any new ground here anything that I hadn't seen her -- before but was released just kind of solid package altogether a lot of fun it really was."
" Oh. We do. -- from the future neat. Future life to -- awful because -- reorder your EST so now we can't play it is just another halo game -- it's so much more than just halo. The covenant have been terrorizing human civilization for thirty years now you need to please an OT ES TR recon mission to find out what happened in new Mombasa. Plus there's a new Colombo -- firefight that you can play with the three friends and there's a separate. This has three brand new maps as well as all the original Halo 3 multiplayer maps as well that's 24 maps that I know you don't have. Not to mention if you pre order -- you get to play sergeant Johnston firefight. RJR parker parker thank you. Travel through time just to convince me -- pre order a video game -- it's really really really good okay."
" But if Steve cool here."
" that's who I was thinking oh."
" Cable three odious -- coming to Xbox-360. -- September 22. Visit Xbox dot com slash halo for more information."
" Members and an iPhone have been hit or miss and and then the most interesting ones that really good news controls news. And I heard. Want you warplanes later so I was the last one Mo plus plus -- check -- I think it's pretty fun. The basic controls are really easy to spider kind of like we'll walk along any service that you know you're wondering basically if you. Hold your finger on the -- goes right if you hold your finger on the left of him he goes left and then. With the street John. The basic point of this game. Is you build webs to capture other insects and -- kind of clear the insects out of us -- room and then you move on the next one right so. At first that would find myself trying to like to build. Kind of triangular shaped weapons you tap when your your fighter and so then I might put him -- somewhere click image in immediately in the jump somewhere -- I would miss it wants a lot when my data rate. Triangle that didn't connected to be wasting much self. So what I found out later it was better strategy we -- me. Just like make one line. And -- kind of like the facts take a few steps in the opposite direction and then jump again and then he sits back in the opposite directions that I was always having like -- you know -- that has like a little cross like this cross over here so I knew that there was going to be an intersection between all the points. To make my web."
" Yeah me actually end -- having a really. Being with us that the triangle thing to the very -- and they're doing it after -- didn't really been trying to grind across a large area. And the flies and eventually fight you know into the -- that's what I really like to tout the insects kind of change I -- first it started out like little green that's. And changed like a little bit bigger brown. Flying bugs and then you've got another party somewhere where you have to like. Tackle them instead of putting him in your web drag and in the dragonfly is good alike -- like on them ending catch them in your web the hardest ones and the mosquitoes that. Kind of and just like slowly have to put them in general there yeah. Yeah the narrative is told through the environment that -- I mean your best fighter that he since expense not a story but the the actual. House that your in this mansion it's clear that something dark chapter in its place and you know I don't wanna spoil anything but. It's in those times when the screen zooms out in C over -- you mean you defeated states that you finally get a pretty good picture of what what that area looked like and what the story was right. Hell yeah I think it's really cool is he what you. There's a spider what you created almost like despite his colleague your paintbrush Japanese colleagues created -- your win. Like in this in this room you know in this match it's it is underneath some big."
" I mean it does have. Fairly good fun progression -- you gonna doesn't feel like the exact thing. -- but it also isn't the most complex game ever and I could see a lot more of mechanics being -- story on it's being added didn't say a sequel if they were the ones that could make him a whole lot."
" For me at least this is that this game I ended up finding myself. You know playing inferred. A forty minute half hour chum Billy getting kind of tired of it because it was really -- it is also I'm really glad that like many of they've put into auto updating leaderboard. Which I'm liking more more I believe Panetta in because as I -- FaceBook every -- I like to track. You know me achievements is among my friends you know I like to see who lined up against who's ranked below me or bug me."
" Okay good to -- very you know for these -- I mean this development team. What's -- as far as I know. All working and aerospace is. -- what they're you know this team that we've worked in this office they just animated on it you know separately and Ronald -- the phones yeah it's really cool and I think that's the way you know modern way to make games. Hands so yes I think it's a nice little game I'd love to see what what else they do the future because. You know they don't even have to make -- better game I mean just the fact that kind of got these mechanics down -- be interested to see what the right it's."
" Good idea."
" Drinking at home up playing racing video. Bad idea. Drinking and driving don't do it are too many people just don't understand -- alcohol drugs and driving do not mix. Law enforcement officials are going to be out in force all over the country from August when -- first through favorite day cracking down on drunk drivers -- on putting your life -- risky because you yourself a bundle of time and money jail time driver's license higher insurance rates thank you -- kill somebody. -- just don't do. In fact. The worst part of it all is how easy it is to avoid. He can still go out there have fun just plan ahead you're gonna drink designated driver call attacks use mass transit. Or find some kind of so were right program or you can just do what we do. Stay home. Place the race. -- driving over the limit under arrest."
" Old."
" Analysts yeah yeah."
" Bald headed -- got note don't here's an artillery."
" We just played it as a result -- never played. Flying I you know I really don't you like ten years old. -- I was twelve in the game came out but -- it it is the black -- a veteran gambling. No I don't want and supernatural -- you know it's it's kind of the you know become the template for most action adventure games and puzzle elements of so many games especially after -- grind -- starting this kind of adopt. Let's do -- one kind of awesome awesome we -- space. You'll explored it and you know you'll come to places that you can't pass -- remember what they look quite so that you know that you need to come back later when you have the machinery when you get to work. Go sure the original maturity date and signature achievement I think Superman trade with its color coded doors and that sort of thing was when it really started to. Become part of beginning -- One of the things that did this ahead of its time is very nicely teaching these really tricky mechanics means it's a game where. You essentially have to know the you can walk through walls right at the very beginning there's a wall you know the looks a little awkward but it still is a wall and makes you can't go forward let's bomb through that spot and I'm really sets up from that point on -- okay. I need to be checking everything and I don't know if what I see in front -- is actually what it appears to be."
" Yeah it's a perfect example of -- that carrot on the stick every item might get Superman trying to like. Yes I can jump higher now's not go to this place like go to this place. Not the crap I just got to -- be excellent for now I can't wait to completely legally release the data -- EC itself sent. Yeah modern British so well executed you start out in -- you can't go anywhere you feel very weak every any counter like scares me and so. Every time I do get something I got the space or when I got dice game it was like game I felt like so relieves even though it's an old. Super Nintendo game that's feeling of exploring and giving -- items that. You know feeling empowered by doing that feeling rewarded for like searching around forever to finally find a little like. Stupid rock that I had to blow up flights and get down grab whatever."
" This is a great about it the PC is is really great I mean you distance. These points where you've looked at the map twenty times and you're staring at it there's only like one blue spot over here and everything else he did you like. I don't get down there and then you finally figured out. It ends -- you to one new area and also need an amount grooming you get a whole new -- for like -- is this entire unexplored area and -- like. Wow okay now I feel free again and then it gets claustrophobic and and you find that one spot again and opens up."
" Thank you the first time I'd look at the maps and I just east. An area that I couldn't I had no clue how to get -- and and we just frustrate you beyond all only because I know I cannot go any further influx I don't -- again this one rumor there might be something where there might not anything at all I still wanna find out how. Eventually -- you get that explains depth that was really exist for me -- Yeah and I wanted to go back through with every thing -- I -- to go back to the whole game not using -- black babies you guys miss don't even."
" This probably one of the few times the first times in the game where your kind of building about his -- and then they give you the map they're telling you look. Here it is here's the -- of this area. But it's not. All you like you still have to go through and find areas that aren't on the map I remember thinking you gotta beat him. Yeah I've been running this area since the beginning of the game and there's all this appear as well holy (%expletive) this game -- amazed at."
" It's almost like. Game design it's time exposing this much that that he. Should know about this great for medium -- casual player but there's still more for you hardcore hardcore players as well what's your favorite area. --"
" That's my favorite directors and it is. Hands down my favorite it's not really combat bogus and you know it's like when you walk into this place it's. I think everything that way yes everything changes to it in eight innings. Very trusting as I felt that it was to use in order to get there you have to go back outside and you're down in the world you can. There's always stealing when -- but -- the ceiling is -- you have very. Firms feeling of that Kennedy going to just wrecked ship and it is it is like you walk into ghost yeah."
" Yeah yeah. Yeah."
" As a child I remember playing this game and feelings. Humidity the way they have the coloring. Contrasting the different textures of the walls you get the feeling that this place is way it's -- it's muggy and yeah this is a super Nintendo and now we're talking and I need is a good job."
" game that essentially has -- stage yet so I wanna -- there's the green -- for us the look on stage every place it's totally different and has. Different deeply to go along with the yeah."
" Yeah yeah."
" Yeah."
" When I was younger when it first played Madrid I I felt. My goodness Vista computers to make Mario. I felt like her movements were a little bit more us Fifth Amendment and he has -- being there were some of his little slice he's trying to stop. From running does that bother you down like by today's standards like that again if you like it's probably worse now."
" You are probably compared to playing on. Something like Call of Duty 4 versus like fallout three -- three -- you know it's fun to play in first person in the shootings kind of plummeted to the bills' tight end. Call of duty -- the jumping in the game honestly. They definitely know what you mean. You know the inertia of a Mario jump is like there's just nothing like it and acting but I think that's he's been. There's nothing it feels as good as Mario and do a good job of making you feel like your week at the beginning. And the -- it's hard in the -- hard. But as you go on invited -- the end game you can just keep jumping in the air as many times like anything that you -- dies -- your weapons are so powerful you're so strong that you. You know. You just feel like -- God and it's."
" If I remembered and it's been like. 35 years and put us. What do you -- if you just let. The titles being sick it's gonna and eventually the cinema locally showing sinister and all these weird news one day just by accident noticed this to collect. It won't what is all the (%expletive) like he'd never really get this directly he can do this now right."
" Kind of fall down it's hit you realize the only way -- you're gonna get out of here is to do with this little health guidance oil preacher. Do you like this also decided this hit I walked -- when he was doing this and he said you know I need the -- of ability and I laughed and I'm like you know. You have it you just didn't know you did. Unlike some of the other mechanics like jumping the shooting. Or the rolling -- the biomechanics. -- jump. -- to act like everything just works the way you would expect it to work if you played in the previous entries -- this want to have just. Doesn't work that well the timing -- on its timing and also that I feel like you know your inclination is to. Jump against this all. Pulled the opposite direction and jump off a bit we have to keep pressing towards the wall when you're jumping in and I'm like -- all I can do what you double button press. Once in -- once out to. Finally get its work correctly the first time yet aggravating and it -- you really you only use it to get up this this kid in the and it's so kind of -- that. Kind of don't really use it much ever against reports."
" No I."
" And --"
" So have you seen it. -- So yeah diet. Not discuss the end like what are the most memorable cinematic moments and all game. As an incendiary and it didn't think they're told this but I have no control over what's happening -- And then suddenly something happens. And it's okay and -- like it's pure evil like you would never fixed the delays. Hopefully eventually comes back to rescue you know it's it's just hustle they had Governor Palin yeah yeah. It's -- Madrid -- was like what he landed on this planet there's something going on but. You had that coming emotional. Evening and and very -- that they even do not only should those allows me needed to this day. There anybody years later so remember this moment is when the greatest moments in gaming."
" Even though the graphics are old and it you know it definitely shows its age someone I mean is still feels like a fairly modern game. Through and through our little. And still today are using -- has their template so like you when you play today you'll notice when I'm playing now."
" And."
" More -- was Squarespace. Boom. Squarespace is publishing system for anyone looking to go to block portfolio or any kind of website you. You -- Squarespace offers a uniquely flexible tool for just about anyone know coding experience required to build high end complex -- eyes with the same functionality -- uniqueness and you find some of the highest trafficked pages on the -- Good taste not included. Sign up today he's probably code co opting."
" And."
" It is big men. -- it. Brad Bryant who I am well I got it right here and you put jurors yes. Be nice well dots that are so what you think it's awesome dude it's just like -- accomplice."
" The market."
" War."
" This episode of poem is brought to you but. Q 030 yes cheaper Xbox-360. Prepare to -- the national fight against drunk driving over the limit under arrest. And Squarespace."
" the fresh morning. Awful awful lot of business.
" The market."

oops, messed up the episode number. Can a mod take care of that, or enable deleting threads?

After watching this episode it makes me wonder how great games like Super Metroid could be ported to this current generation of players. Will they respond the way I did back in the day. I think of my 14yr old nephew and wonder if this would resonate with him at all.jackierulesall

I TOTALLY remember playing Wolfenstein 3D when I was 7 on my 12" non-color, beige computer monitor. Where whenever Hitler and/or a wolf was around the corner, the red loading light would flash... giving me just enough time to prepare myself for a heart attack.
I don't think these remakes are meant to, necessarily, appeal to the younger generation... but we all know how cool it is to like things that are vintage (i.e., Atari). For most people who are fans of Atari, it was around WAY before they even were. Plus, it's like learning to appreciate history.
P.S. I just realized Wolfenstein 3D is the exact reason as to why I'm so obsessed with FPS.

Well, I must have been about 12 or 13 - but I think I played Wolf 3D for the first time on a tiny black and white 386 laptop without proper sound. It was still amazing!
But I gotta say - playing Doom for the first time was what really blew my mind (on a proper "multi media" PC with sound). It took me hours to download the shareware from a BBS - but it was so worth it. Me and my buddy literally huddled around the monitor and took turns at it for hours. It was totally mesmerizing, and there was something so visceral about the experience of playing Doom for the first time - I've never felt anything quite like it from a game since then.
...anyway great episode guys. 1994 was a damn good year, and I'm feeling super nostalgic for the 90s now for a variety of reasons. But specifically in terms of gaming - I think that was the golden age for me. Between the SNES and the innovations PC games went on in those years - it's hard to beat. Plus - my favorite game of all time came out right around 94: X-Com!! Still play it in DOSBox to this day.
