GDC 2009 Special
Monday, March 30th, 2009 running time 37:21
Last week was the Game Developers Conference version 2009. We gather together names you undoubtedly recognize and delve into what made the show special this year.
One may ask oneself if it is indeed possible to wrap up an entire weeks worth of game announcements and industry news in one, approximately half-hour show. It ain't easy. Fortunately we had the help of X-Play's Adam Sessler, The Totally Rad Show's Jeff Cannata, WhatTheyPlay's John Davison, formerly MTV's Patrick Klepek, and GameSpy's Will Tuttle and Sterling McGarvey. In a discussion literally of the round-table variety they all join us to boil down GDC into a delicious, spicy reduction sauce of what's important to all of us as gamers. Contained within:
Infamous, the OnLive announcements, Fat Princess, PixelJunk Eden: Encore, Punch Out!!, ExciteBots, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, and wrap-ups on the notable moments of the Keynotes, the GDC award ceremonies and a shout-out to some Independent Games Festival favorites.
Note that next week's show will be devoted almost entirely to the games of the IGF as GDC really is the indie-gaming, coming-out party of the year.

" More. This episode of co op is brought -- by Squarespace. Godaddy.com. And Netflix."
" You -- yeah. Missouri now we're going of this later going up not down it's the most exciting. The molecular targets and obviously -- oh god it's the end yeah."
" Here and -- CDC press room 2009 we just got here. We're thinking of catches us that we actually get and -- these are our first first Agence. As area five. And they ask -- what are settled -- we've you know we should keep people here and a period and so. World producers. And our -- respect everybody its north."
" Yeah."
" This segment has brought to you by Squarespace. Squarespace is -- publishing system for anyone looking to build a blog portfolio and -- the website. Squarespace offers a uniquely flexible tool for just about anyone. No coding experience required to build high end complex web sites with the same functionality you'll find some of the highest trapping heat is on the wet. Senate today and use promo code co --"
" Earlier we. That was the first thing we've got here -- go -- how to be here. All that's up there were so transparent about their business like the temple. Even the -- royalties that are pulling -- an army units that they were selling I think for. You know so many other kids are trying to do what they're doing trying to do like acting company here in the other guys that -- business out of it I think it's great they're sharing that information is loaded divisions and gaming right now one of the big divisions is. The closed systems that on Nintendo Microsoft and sunny and in the open systems. I found FaceBook. Of the ninety. And it only in the guise of saying why are we trying to create something and drag people into it when this something where -- we just don't -- and and it's such a progressive. Like cool approach to -- clearly the future and it just makes you look at. Night why the hell is Sony trying to build out PlayStation it was always -- and no one is one of these guys saying the disease FaceBook connect as a social network I saw this and all hung up behind the proprietary nature anything like we know that we can make you William Franz by the system that already exists. Take a pay social media."
" Out of the game done that and it's. These people are in those places but other things well so that's why I stopped playing. You know when who has these brain all my life on and on makes everyone I'm friends with concede that I did that and one of the first things that some people can do it but I didn't know that was on the -- and I'm gonna get taken out there and mind you don't get that on anybody else does because that's so close and it's like you need to be on the and -- the status update of postings and photos and discover game in the process of giving back. Scrabble this week's recap I've just -- that I -- plays scrabble on FaceBook against the boom playing it on iphones -- that's super smart FaceBook is the pilot you don't need -- make a -- pie and I -- you have little diary on there but the idea pushing -- to other service doesn't make any sense I don't know why -- access FaceBook on Xbox Live or on its network. That's that should be in -- every time and there's some something new coming out everybody wants you to reinvent the case we'll because they feel like hello it's web 2.0 technologies all the social networking stuff we need to have that as part of our service as well."
" think -- dangerous that is you think about the integration like social networking social networking is episode flavor of the month. I mean look like three years ago four years ago where MySpace last week what MySpace and -- now and like where FaceBook is I feel like there's like a certain. There's a peak point and then the next big thing is going to. By the time the Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo sit around and tweak all this stuff we're all gonna be on the next big thing."
" The ops yeah also -- wearing it. For example the FaceBook was the back end of the week. Then it would extend extend the lifespan of FaceBook because you know aids Arianna we do -- you know -- just keep using that one's -- video game consoles and even knows if we'll even. Those anymore after. This announcement of the what is in --"
" Home."
" Berlin. An intro was not. Is -- gonna and that is the way starts why he gets in the service you happen we bass. From computers. With a lot of grieving process. I spent some time down NIC."
" Purely by accident ended up talking to one of the Yankees -- is -- my name up that was brought in because he was you know. Distributed network engineering -- and telling me about you know it's towels. How complex of things. And also house. In some ways the services long way ahead of the infrastructure right now. And in what is clear is if you have. Baseline. You know eighteen TD SL service. No practical option right you have now blazing bats in an end of ups and -- because we need both. It's it's great and then the service talking to each other at least -- little list though. The back into the looking very efficiently but all of the bottleneck between you and as a running back."
" My thoughts were always eight games are inherently going through each experienced television with a PC with a map so that. Crisis -- electronic arts. I think everybody knows very kind game. Never ever ever run on a very low end sub 700 dollar he's seen all of a sudden. In my state games I got first crests. There are -- a little laptop. 720. --"
" I think the quality is just showing that he can be done -- someone's gonna -- it's that is only site which is -- different. And can -- good at -- and bond prices and the obvious like cable company. Comcast something like that they're the ones that ultimately that they're going to -- have to -- it does give -- the infrastructure in order -- evening services and -- it by. -- The extra money to get the -- I think you biding our time to discuss the second game box that comes from. -- an online -- box next time. When you I think and it it inside an existing cable box gasoline having me. Flat out said the guy one of the guys that was where it's only like this thing is so cheap to make it. We give it away does not act breaks at all when the bandwidth is ready they'll want you to name me and that's that's all it's an enemy doesn't do anything else."
" It's so expensive that -- price war in -- service act to get great. Get up. Everything everything that's that magic forces that. I think I think pretty much. Yet DSL or cable or whatever I -- You might you be sure your stereo system. In you don't surround sound preachy mine is the optical records your audience is yeah. Then the other side yet it was forced you like your favorite use the controller rather play -- Burma no problem."
" They're sitting what is the some serious Mac users who don't really touched you -- be able to have those gains at our fingertips anytime we don't have a net connection for it. Who may be considered getting an extra."
" Yeah. And I love the idea not have a -- artwork in this. (%expletive) get rid of it now hi I'm fine with having it done internally there it. Everything that's on the news and and I think it's exciting for me is somebody who hasn't faced with the idea of using something like this might render -- problem. Ultimately be possible once this has rolled out -- Very often. The amount of data that's generated -- gets compressed and compressed -- breast and a -- doing it a large scale simulation. Potentially terabytes of information that they -- that this could be in the way of the games district now that I just don't want servants and you haven't gained the system. Two terabytes of stuff and end and you just gonna pull it sounds like the big seller once it's still -- potential greatly accelerate. -- into new areas in the technologies to scale back and but it all comes down to them and it was that -- the realization that woods looking one down man because it was running it probably less than the T and -- and a little bit. Hundreds the unreal yeah that the prices yeah I've I've I've. Perfect. The potential for years but dominating capitalize on potential means it."
" Everything in their basement saying oh we get totally reminds me like a year and a half ago that this guy get his old one -- future lecture Leipzig and everybody -- left him off the stage. And are you saying that and its directors and -- profit. And -- that there was no constant changes and having him or her and it's -- I just thought. Gotta be so much easier there's just one platform and position pot six -- connections talk about games and talking about what we play among the likeness of the right direction."
" Maybe Sony and Microsoft game studios coming stopped losing money on their consoles and main focus exclusively on software if I'm a fan of Sony's games and -- games and I'm not the voters flocking to. And makes you wonder. And that's something. And these guys are -- and do everything they can't protect their existing platform investments."
" It normally lasts. Possible. Hardware it's unnecessary you know something different that's actually we'll be glad we're looking at the -- keeps -- you -- over -- sent you -- go by the Sony Booth. That's right and I'm gonna I was there just like they got wipeout HD and three I went over to check it out put on three glasses. Controls that they -- which are sure to stuff. Often the first person and started playing like it's like they're. Yeah I was in my days that you know the Heidi is like yeah. Right here so you actually have to. Focus your eyes you know read your eyes to different -- it's purely on a differently so it's. You're playing the game in the Hudson years because it's not looking at the same way your eyes actually work in real life. And in Europe you know knowing how I was to have lance you move your head this way street and tilts like. It was -- Everything's rushing past in the should certainly an intimate and exclusive just went around me that's when you really this is I didn't think there was no sound aerial -- and I was wearing five point one -- Wearing these 3-D glasses sitting in my room playing with probably most color and that's close today putting the wipe out -- yet so like there actually went."
" Sony's got their -- set up where you go play some other games and when we went it was all infinite. And is that going to be my new -- yeah I yeah. Susan technicality of yeah yeah -- upon a crackdown was like I'm warming -- around and going buildings. Yeah it really is there's it's it's kind of like combination thing. Between crackdown in maybe like assassin's -- got a little bit of this this kind of sticking -- got a little bit of afloat and then there's a hole right here in Seattle like Rick if you want to that you're standing on -- particular topic that many jump over the railroad track. And you know he grinds along the railroad track of what's really who is using electricity you would make -- go faster. And combat seemed pretty you you know youth over the shorter gears of war in firing your electricity. You hit -- 30 victory over kind of show all the places in the environment that apple address -- And that's related to hear health as well what you need your help it's -- going to do is find power source socket in your own petard."
" As I love the idea that like all your power and all your help this time in super -- easily than that now we want to -- want -- tell you. I think it's great because it's like it's everywhere it's not just in the car it's not just like some might telegraph whoever did the little boss battle you find some object in the environment. You can leave up to it -- that -- to bounce back into battle like it's really really fluid management. And receiver screen playing you did everything. Fully recharged at most five seconds so it's it's really quick to get -- in and out of the the idea that they gave us this demo. Evil character I thought it was a great choice because they know damn well most important players keep everybody always plays a game characters the good guys who -- the idea that they -- immediately like here's this guy he looks soft tennis and play again kind of dark. His site here's his weapons that you're going to get it. He plays that might have -- like holy (%expletive) this rocket launcher electricity biggest -- that you worked on the sea lions and you always play good I'm playing you. Like yeah wanted to get -- Yeah. But yeah. And I'll help the united that it doesn't look. Of the early prototype it argues those natural."
" Similarities. I do hope that they give it up and try to really identified as games of the great state."
" Freedom of movement in your game you know -- it the most frustrating thing is to reading through invisible walls which were ready to something to keep you from going higher jumping -- but -- Right."
" Godaddy.com. Makes it easy to customize their own virtual dedicated server choose one of three popular plans -- select your own Linux or windows server with all the -- you need. Plus enter code C move forward when you check out and save an additional 15% on any order of 75 dollars or more. Some restrictions apply that seaside reviewed journals to ensure peace of the Internet that's godaddy -- art."
" Yeah. Good right."
" I don't know how we got here ordinarily be out there in the normal crowd than normal people that. Now let's. -- didn't -- the idea award so here we are. I mean I think it. Sitting here now there's."
" Pretty awesome."
" I mean we. All are and all the it's. Evil and you haven't done it dabble. Okay. So I've never been able to do you work. -- I'll do what it says. -- Could it."
" But."
" Downloadable games come into your house silently and invisibly through the walls just like ghosts which is kind of scary to think about it. Aid entertain you but you can't touch them. Just like strippers and because they're small size they tend to get more creative is that really short strippers."
" What are the schools each. Your idea. There's only into I can use -- I. It's okay. It's fine yeah. It's the --"
" It's. A little."
" This segment -- by now. Thanks to Netflix for sponsoring this episode of caught up with Netflix you can rent over 90000 titles online including lots of Blu-ray titles with free shipping apple -- to your home. They now have over forty shipping centers almost all deliveries happen in just one business. The Netflix plans starts -- 499. As a new member you can get a no risk two week trial membership. Checking out at www. Netflix.com. Slash -- Member detected Debbie -- when using passcode."
" It's going to have anything else that gets them yet they had this -- expansion -- on -- which is continuing of course they're collaboration client on. -- and it's. (%expletive) amazing just talking and don't have great games and -- Both he and violent learned the locker room -- doesn't. About how to make the game a little bit more accessible to players. And also. What -- can view with the engine and what they can do graphics so -- they're actually of the fight game gardens are just -- more -- because they kind of know the limits of what can you."
" Sony had a couple of times here were really means I've finally got a chance to check out fat princess today and thank games go hey Jeff."
" Here tonight. Yeah. I did yeah it's fun and funny silly fun I love the voice over. That's experience yeah wherever -- what's the deal. Yeah and -- involvement as a multiplayer is sixteen on succeed. Which is (%expletive) ground and it's that's and it's kind of like being any real time strategy game. Where everybody can be individual players. You can actually take on and you liberals you want continued ability and they have passed the -- on the ground but on the wizard -- continue to wizard class. And entry into the field and you knock out one of their guys -- they have a level three warriors up like that you're treated equally has little one. If you kill them they dropped their -- you can go pick up the other teams happening you've become a little. The reason why the game is called fat princess is looking. He has -- an advantage. He doesn't -- us and he's shown he can hurt people yeah. And much more difficult. NASA you know if she's on your team you want to makers that's possible so. More difficult to steal her away the red team in the -- after -- and his princess. So to capture the -- where you need to. Your -- back to your castle so batters he is the more of the team have to carry her the same time in the slower -- move. I was. Well they have it stand. Standard kind of you know fantasy classes and warrior."
" Age priests ranger. And in worker and the working class isn't just somebody that those things -- resources he also has an attack which is a bomb but if you. Build up when the buildings and those super bombs. And the super -- there around -- have -- ingredients every class has their own special powers they also have a special -- evidently select the priest go from being either class. And you press the triangle just switches to his special class he starts to look well evil and dark and his staff hasn't had to go to college there. And he and he sucks the life force out of people and recharges itself went and I seen this game that I would want voice chat. And we didn't have that we're just sitting there and I felt I didn't really ever have a problem communicating. Despite playing. What the team was doing everybody's -- it just runs around -- It's not like a person was -- you really have no idea where everybody is. These yourself -- pulled back succeed. More like selling parts yes I think everybody moving toward the -- right now I would join him that he spent it. The simple line drawings makes it easy to figure out what's going on tonight's outside observers -- start -- yes things are -- United States every night. All I can clean up and it again you know. Voice activated since it but it is her right eye irritation if we'll plated three laps here that was the big. Like on this game was down. Well they've been there now and then needed it you can -- insert media all supports yes there's a little -- will be very -- 32."
" Linux yeah. Will remain that way yeah -- it's. He -- not working closer with your teammates in your community. -- Not having to have everybody works together all the time in order to --"
" Well you know is another the in the data very literally took the title from was. Rock and rule I. I think we'll have the kid he's my friend Miguel Lopez and invests that it look like Johnny Jones commercial from the ninety."
" If fact it's the top and do the entire thing I mean you're telling -- new designers that didn't give the keynote last night. About that presentation in the right. Well I think you're joking and tired. I know I -- getting rid of Simpson's episode. All the violence. Currently humor. I was looking at the CSI stuff -- games like that -- game where. You know it's just basic where you're -- you. Your basic brown I was like the kind of cool and then at the end when the playback the video and you move doing the -- they were doing I was like. That's critical. They want to let you notice this so unfocused and out of did not I still loose at the beginning they decided Electra went on there what they've learned their development cycle and what else."
" Hatcheries and expect identity -- It really was as if it's straight we will know you can do that. Yesterday and I haven't. You -- are playing -- and and I. Just wish -- Virginia right outside the door it's."
" Show him."
" I like it was no way out there like NBC series -- I got pressure on -- now it may have. I think they're -- you give your prostate Andrea fine and."
" Yeah."
" Bills for the next though. Yeah its. Spirit tracks on the popular links on this month of the content."
" And our question that was really simple idea I actually didn't finish it and I've heard that I'm just a bunch of really cool boss battles at -- again alone about to meet the needs are beginning of the game and took. Any of them puzzling elements that are really loved Brothers coming into -- through the windows. It's still here go to this place and you know there. And then it tells you the answer to a puzzle. And then you go to some other place and you can put he has been puzzled that you got from the other location and you Rhode Island or whatever and to me that just seemed a little boring like. Controls and I don't know its pluses and some of the new mechanics and -- here Craxi and interest me like draw little app or act character. That uses like eight for another enemy continues to go around and behind him and then you attack I don't know it depends how much is that that you and it. -- addresses right now. Before the conference at any --"
" Talk about the yes I was planning to get one but after seeing a few things that might. Well Biden peaked yet who bite size Nintendo games on the she's on the go. This might be worth it right now it's someone posted to read about some new iPhone game that I should be seeing how this this gives to a fire -- I minded my have -- right -- and I play it even if I'm easily carried out Brennan it's yet another credit sometimes -- don't but it's such a small. What cost of entry that doesn't matter -- I'm willing to try it out as long as someone who I respectful that is worth trying to I want handover to. That experience he securities held laser for the -- they're not they. Fox yeah and look -- they're not as happy they're not going to get various sites out there. I'm just not -- where Nintendo really stepping forward and say hey we got this great Linux community marchers or whatever that might be like any correlation between the buying music and and it's the same when I was with games you can spend 99 cents or 299 in game. That's a bite -- game and do it in the same way basically you advise them on iTunes I think that's. And easily explainable to tonight now it's you're -- I just -- Spike Jones thing and there wasn't it more heartening. Most mountainous titles I mean we just last week our show covered the world view and the reason that covering it so -- is. Because we just -- and I was really glad that I took the time -- play it because it's really good -- wonderful moment when we."
" That only enter click on the phone in the public and colder than it was any else on the menu and a jewel with the -- sides can be the -- life. Have you guys like great okay words you can -- let us know the greatest. I mean that's the thing is -- now. Note that will literally. -- it's issues that aren't."
" Anybody else. The play on."
" Saying bonds. I'm gonna copy of the fact that. Cool I want -- look -- it was written to Clinton I was needs I would tunnel ceiling fan. Yeah I know it's it's it's Mario cart plus transformers. Sent -- we'll -- it. Plus voters -- What it's awesome. And I. Pad and on and I started excite truck. Excite truck -- being its pentium but fugitives -- pizza box full. I broke up already thank you double the excitement level I."
" you know I was look right -- simpler but not a surprise or not as excited with photos. Importantly it's like. I don't know unknown and and it was it was who want to resign because it was with rhythm you know little game but this this time in your name's Steve this and I I don't. My view this did you I mean anyway -- plan today that you played only the well business and goes when you tell me that actively monitor it old school punch -- now with two buttons and he had hats off. -- all in I'm going to please -- frequently go visit his his brother cousin. And I have experienced. When he says he's our guys are college grads need to admit early twenties every weekend report we haven't guise of Mario Kart. And I was talking with my brother about it I have to keep my. And he just looked at you for secondly it was an idiot me how to quit college which controls QBs to wield and -- Yeah. I really was -- look like there was no other option whatsoever and you know because we -- the -- do that we gold started every single. Every single plastic ears that that that I told mustn't go player right now. And he sat down it wasn't like the commercials it was like. They're sitting like doing all of this he was just had -- like down the conflict would like rather regular real and he was playing like. We start up like in advance 150 CC crazy stuff he was a neat thing that. It. -- I Sacramento for the whole time rift that starting between people like -- in playing in adult life and moral yeah. This whole new group of people who are just discovering genes because of -- and our our. Finding them to be accessible simply because of the controls that we all this like so much better at it again and I. --"
" I think there's just a large group of people that. Don't want to learn how to do you know they don't want to -- have learned -- Play games certain way it's going to be able to play it they want often plays a mean punch out I mean doesn't require you to actually throw punches. Well let me tell you need to do. -- Iraq until we -- is to punch out has street fighter for justice. It's like hey you remember how much fun you have witnessed were going to update the graphics tweaks and stuff a little bit maybe doing a few new characters that would basically giving you. This awesome kind of refined version. Something you already love that kind that it intends and you know. That's kinda what they've been doing for a long. Strategists say it means the sand it's it and I don't know that's a good -- a bad -- that speaks to just telling you -- And I don't mean."
" Decision on whether I think about health. And you rendered that. You always for the next Mario whirlwind and it's older it's ridiculous on its own a home run around and yeah that's."
" Interstate is that they're totally like waste not want an honest every single thing they implemented to a game is something you didn't recycle into something else they've reused somewhere else and so really -- I -- creating a third iteration of what -- sports boxing."
" Fitness boxing game that we that I couldn't stand that she got on my nerves but it's like the idea that I can sit them on balance board and fox. -- have to worry about this like rough instructor barking orders there just beat the (%expletive) out of king hip."
" Well I don't think we weren't feeling a bit like that aspect of balance."
" And how much has talked about -- yes. -- to inform me about she sees that it really draws it stark comparison between. What we've seen before you know I can't tell you six or seven. The third person shooters that I've seen the show that are indistinguishable from each other for the the IP. And and then this stuff that's happened with people thinking it's a source like oh my god this is a breath of fresh air all idea. Billion it really is being VE three for indie games and having. You know they're tightening community all being in one place at the same time generates the kind of energy around but I think it's really important to me. Take and that changed the landscape for all this year is no exception and yeah you guys play tag it all off. I played the unfinished -- those -- games -- on some base level kind of similar and other both like a game where you should repeat again. And and things happen -- explores the environment -- games very much like. RC exploration virgin and one is like more like possible it's -- like we're like we're. And they're both awesome and then there's all these other games that are completely different and you know even after -- resolved on the new games that were completely different your mind is still room. You know the idea it's yours and you know it's young -- there it was doing it for the energy. As a talking to guys for -- and ultimate alliance two and I was talking. Much positive Jessica -- Leo he's got our start in 98. -- won a couple of awards and the idea you know it's like that's what got us into the industry and so it really works like. We're at or slightly elevated him to regulate."
" And it's like last night of the awards ceremony win it you know obviously with a big planet. And this question except for -- of the year award but. When and at times when they went -- to accept is that you know we really want I think all these I guess people. And I am putting words nothing basically that we go there we steal ideas like in the lots of cool ideas come out of the idea. Every year and it's a breath of fresh air every time we see it really inspires us like crazy and we love it."
" Yeah."
" Yeah."
" More. This episode of co op is brought -- by Squarespace. Godaddy.com. And Netflix."
" You -- yeah. Missouri now we're going of this later going up not down it's the most exciting. The molecular targets and obviously -- oh god it's the end yeah."

Episode 104 - GDC 2009 Special [Discussion]

I think that this show might save gaming. I absolutely loved it, and I seriously think we can change the way people think about gaming when they see the critical analysis and complex ideas associated to market ideals, how shallow gaming has become, and how communal and nearly spiritual gaming is when we get smart people talking about it. I'm absolutely impressed, and you guys have completely stepped up your game on the lighting and camera work. This is my new favorite Rev3 show, and if you review my post history: I'm kind of an asshole when it comes to reviews. It takes a powerful, impressive show to make me clap in an empty house. Well done. Give me more.

WOW!
This episode is amazing. This episode really highlights where the industry is today and where I would love to see it go in the next few years. I won't steal anyone's words from the episode but this is a must see for anyone interested in the industry.
Keep it up! I can't wait for next weeks coverage on the Independent Games Festival.

Best episode yet.
Great Guest hosts and Great coverage. Really loved seeing everyones little imput over the "tiny" stuff and not the big guys.
Even just the little bit they covered on the new zelda. it was a fine mix of everything but at the same time the little stuff shined more so IMO.

Am really liking this show. Great episode, it really dug into a few games some people (or just me) would probably not have paid much attention to (except Zelda, perhaps), and gave some nice views on them. The only negative comment I could have for it is that it incites me to want to get more games, which I currently do not have the money for.

Great episode. Fantastic that you're able to cover the things that interest you now, because this show is at its best when you guys are talking about things you care about.
Loving all the guests you've had on CO-OP so far, all enthusiastic and knowledgeable and interesting. I want to see them ALL again :)
