Testing, 1, 2... CO-OP is Live! Mass Effect 2 and Jonathan Mann
Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 running time 59:30
CO-OP comes into its namesake today by involving YOU! We'll tell you when you can join in and all you need is a Twitter account. Simply put @COOP_live anywhere in your tweet and we'll see it! Wait until we ask for it, though, as we don't want your tweets to get lost in the shuffle. We're going to have a musical guest that we think you'll love and right after his first performance is when we're going to go to the first fan segment where you can ask him questions. He'll then play himself off and right after that we're going to do ANOTHER fan segment where you can ask any of the Area 5 crew anything you want. Disagree with our Mass Effect 2 review? Tell us! Want to see more of the set? Want to tell JayFresh how bloody sexy he is and see him blush? Now you can! CO-OP could never have come this far without you and now we need you to make CO-OP Live the best it can be! Join in, talk to us and we'll talk back. <3
In our first ever LIVE show (oh god oh god!) we'll be taking a long, hard look at BioWare's latest epic, Mass Efffect 2. Pay particular attention to what we say as this is the first time you're going to be able to directly talk back to us and tell us what you think! At the end of our show (we'll tell you when) we're going to have a fan segment and all you have to do is put @COOP_live somewhere in your tweet and we'll see it! Ryan, Matt, and JayFresh have all spent some serious quality time with ME2 since its release and have been bursting at the seams to spill on the beans on what makes it such a paragon example of the western RPG. Nothing is perfect, however, and it'll be a lot of fun for the whole team to see where the game succeeds and fails for everyone else out there. Now's your chance to be a part of CO-OP!
A big, ginormous and special thanks to our friend Jonathan Mann! Not only is he part of the duo (along with the fabulous Jane Pinckard) that created the original CO-OP theme, he's also done a Mario opera, musical numbers for X-Play (including their musical episode), and has been on MSNBC thanks to the epic diversity of his Song a Day endeavor; where, ever since January of 2009, Jonathan has created a song for every day of the year!. He's a bit of a musical perpetual motion machine. Laws of thermodynamics bedamned! You're on Jonathan's house now! Make sure to stick around after his first performance to talk directly to him by using @COOP_live somewhere in your tweets. We'll tell you when, but it should be pretty obvious when he comes down to sit on the couch with us.
And, finally, for those of you unable to catch the show live, the full, recorded version will be compressed and will go out under the regular CO-OP iTunes feed so you can see all the shenanigans within hours (hopefully) after we're done recording. Come back and tell us what you think here at the Revision3 forums, our website at area5.tv, or via Twitter. This is new for everyone and we're going to need your help to make it the best it can be!
Much <3 from the CO-OP Live team!

Well, I like it! No live for me because I realized I had school at that time. But so far, it's keeping the same tone as the old format and while not spot on, the cut to gameplay video worked very well. I liked how you guys were able to comment on the videos as they were happening.
I think I will miss the change of scenery every episode, but very much am liking the potential of this show. Definitely going beyond your standard game review video. Looking forward to many more live episodes to come!

First up this was IN-FUCKING-CREDIBLE
Second, would you be able to consider putting more info in writing about where to find/watch the live show? and most importantly have a list for your say 30 biggest locations and what time (their time) your show is on? I'm in Brisbane, Australia and missed it live - I really would have liked to have tweeted something to you guys.
To CO-OP team - what about selling a Gaming Nostalgia pack? an 80's themed pack a 90's and 00
s themed pack, essentially selling whats right behind you guys in the show?
I have a massive Doom poster thats been framed, the original that came with the "ultimate doom" box had it when i was a kid, but it got lost or destroyed, ended up buying a new one in p/c off ebay. its now framed behind glass, i'd loved to get this poster carefully packaged and sent to your team to have it signed and will gladly pay for this too! I'm going to send an email to the team and see if I can get someone to help~
This is the poster: http://www.doomworld.com/pageofdoom/graphics/UltimateDoomPoster.jpg
Great set, perfect choice for your first guest. Nobody expects a AAA performance for your first episode but that was pretty fucking close guys, if anything sticking to a perfectly executed dialog might be a bit hard or make it even more obvious if you deviate/mess up a sentence or something (because you sorta hesitate to recover), but you guys still kept it fairly loose, rocking
I was a little worried when i saw only 3 of the team on the couch but relieved (and actually really fucking liked how you panned around and introduced the camera/sound/director crew because with shows that aren't a multi million dollar production not doing so makes it feel less social you know?
Noooo! I am hugely into electronic music but I never get introduced into music about games, music is in EVERY game you play (almost every game) it's a huge part of gaming and it's always overlooked.
Sure you definitely don't want half the EPs with musicians but i think it's totally appropriate, even more so because the dude did the original CO-OP theme song!

I was initially skeptical about the change in format, and was not settled by the new song or the strange intro narrative. The lack of overt deer-in-the-headlights ?This is Co-Op Live? introduction comforted my worries of banality. Besides a few pieces of inevitable criticism related to your unfamiliarity with the format, I finished the episode with optimistic confidence and excitement.
What struck a chord with me the first time I watched Co-Op was the round table discussion regarding the state of independent games. Forgetting its content, this scene and its visual language is immediately recognizable to a gamer as the very bullshitting we do after playing a new game.
This familiarity is enforced through editing by framing speakers sitting across from each other on opposite sides of the shot, something the new set's 2 walls restrict. The clashing red and green colors with the too-close clutter are distracting, worsened by the couch being square to the walls. I think these problems could be solved by spacing out the memorabilia, repainting the walls and adding a third, and then offsetting couches to the set corners.
What else makes co-ops round tables so reverent is the subtlety of discussion. You confirmed my suspicions that the review had been planned, as it was obvious in your performances. The lack of intention and the inevitable repetition and agreement was still there, but only in between the key goal posts obviously set out before the clip. I'm still not entirely sure it's necessary that the discussions be live? There's no reason we can't talk about the pre-recorded discussion live after the clip?
That leads me to my final, more hopeful point: I think this will provide a lot of opportunity for more reflective game dialogue with the people who make, review, and play games. There are many opportunities for cool emergent ideas with the new format that I will be considering in the coming weeks. I felt something really special was added to the show as you discussed meta concepts of the very show you were making. That sort of reality is what grounds this entire network, but Co-Op specifically.
I think you guys did stellar for your first live show, and I cannot show enough appreciation for your being so receptive and engaging to viewers. I would not have spent the time to post this if I didn't feel valued. That kind of ?corporate? authenticity is rare and sought after.

Don't like it
Hi all!I was a big fan of COOP for a long time, and now with this new format, I'm totally re-thinking my loyalty to this show.
What I mostly like about the old shows is that they were always in a different place, always something new, etc... Now it's always going to be on the set.
Then it's damn too long, I stopped after 45mins because I couldn't take it anymore...
The intro music and animation was great before, and now it's really stripped down and boring.
Finally the ads in the old version were ok because they were made in a creative ways, but now it's just a big screen, with voice over, nothing could be more boring!
Well I'll watch another episode, but not sure if I'll keep on after that...
Cheers!

Not enjoying the new format
The quality just isn't there with the new format. The set looks nice and I still enjoy the conversation, but the rest of the show really suffers. I much preferred the old format.pfmbsantos

The show feels basically the same, and that's quite an accomplishment.
The MAIN difference is, as posted before, the change of sets/scenarios. That will be weird for us as viewers to adjust.
So far, the MAIN problem (if it's a problem at all) are the ads. Can't you guys just queue previously recorded ads into the live? If yes, that would be a smart move.
And I like the ideia of playing/"demo-ing" games live, but don't stick only to indie/obscure titles. And it's not dull, I actually like 1UP's Game Night, of course some nights it's boring, but what makes it boring are the people, if you have engaging personalities (or cool developers themselves) doing it, you'll be fine.
Nice work guys!

I quite liked it, I was surprised to see how much of the old style was still there, and good to hear that more of it is still coming. I thought the Mass Effect 2 talk was a bit long, maybe if you would cover 2 games instead of just one it would feel not so long.
It was good to hear the full theme song for once as well.

I understand this is the a new format/first show and could change so i guess my suggestion would be have more games reviewed like the old show at least 2 or so and have more people discussing the games so more points of view can be heard.
overall i still enjoyed the first show in the new format.
ps. please no more singing segments.
Thanks
