" It everyone welcome to our fourth day dialogue when cameras and now under -- Arctic Digg.com and in my -- today. Team with Trent Rasner front and founder. And -- touchdown of the year. So we went out and basically. What we do indeed -- as we submitted. The idea that you Indians and peoples and all their questions. And they can vote at the paper. So there's been a little over. She's 5000 questions which is -- big -- amber. With like 203040000. Votes out. So -- only be asking you to days like the most popular. As noted news. Com. Coca-Cola and so let's get started off with question number one. This lesson that abiding -- by the name of key you know V with 710 people taking this out. He asks you've been you've embraced the creative commons and file sharing your business model still primarily involves selling music either digitally or physically. Why haven't you embraced advertising that does all example placing ads. Your torrent tracker -- pirate -- take all the ad revenue you deserve furthermore. Why aren't you building aid brand new record label based on in modern is."

" Woman don't get asked that often but it's good. I first I think has assessed Mosul a little bit off because our business model as a suit has no. So much selling digital and physical goods anymore. I believe that since we've been independent off record levels. Everything's on one part of whose records. Concert tickets merchandise. Publishing licensing music all of that becomes the brand of -- and what do. Between the record at least participate in this -- Excellent -- so. The way Garcia is that now that everything's kind of in the same parts. Things and supported and better. And regarding his. So for the Republican gave you free music. And in my opinion that may contribute more people -- show. And when I say give you free music it's not really up to me to give you free music it's free anyway. For anybody that wants to admitted. Pretty much any piece of music you -- is three in the Internet anyway. So we're trying to amass Goodwill and do we think is right and bring you two are going to talk mr. the brand of sales. The minute -- monetized and awareness day. Concert ticket day. Teacher purchase deluxe is brought to absorb. And as far as the advertising thing. And really we haven't needed to reliable. And maybe we could make a few books. Plastering ads on and a chrome book. -- in affirms. And etiquette is. Well at this point I mean we we have just actually talked with the web designers about they came to Kosovo. Different monetization. Models and and it's. Essentially some numbers of what that means because there will be a time coming up when non nationals goes away for awhile that. I'd like to keep funneling money into the or -- in the development site. And with no nothing coming in that investment you're gonna -- substance and some. But it really would be a matter of feeling you know what feels right I mean there's lots of opportunities and to make money. But it shouldn't always -- about is making money again so as far as applying this to two."

" Other. Your own kind of an apology for making money on -- it would have been answered in the footsteps. Well I think."

" Some of the business models that we've narrowed down -- we started off my first foray into this really was with the Saul Williams project we're gonna record -- really believed in an unfunded. That we couldn't find a label. And we decided let's just put it on the world known and can come and naive approach thinking that. No if you gave people the option to pay about payment given away free knowing that that money goes right into the pocket of the people of -- They would pay for I would never. Who we found out 18% of people would do it was a bit. Quoted in the press as whining about that it was it was a bit. Wing Marcus heartbreaking and away it is a Fox -- estimate -- have you thought that given the opportunity is there. And be our number is that wasn't a mainstream. Frontpage MySpace. Waited need to rant was from new -- from people that would be aware of the end result is -- sold more records and made more money than he would have normal label. -- on. Me fine -- that business model overtime with."

" The -- of ghosts -- reactions here's goods. Different price points. With -- list which was an appropriate question from most successful life and give it away. Toward the limited edition CD and and -- limited we we knew -- we need to me. Going to work for them to do we we didn't get rich off to recover across and we made some profit. Felt like everybody was happy air and we got that message -- tool a lot of people it was an inning. Hurdle to attribute that record producers teas are good friends and every one of artists. You know as part of me wants as many people to hear what do as possible without parole for. -- as far as it being a business while others."

" You know I tried to have a record label in the ninety's the under scrutiny and probably records. We most notably signed parliament sitting and a few other -- and license a lot of phone war product from. Do you -- in the states. And I learned that I really don't want to of these."

" In control of and hold accountable for. Other acts as always to blame for what's -- and most it was. And it's. What I thought we do now is try to give obvious transparent as possible on the stuff we learn from the things and fraud. Make that data transparent others learn from -- improve upon as a community. And of thought about have been talked to some people but the idea of building an infrastructure that other people other musicians and sharing it doesn't take percentages of what they mean. And it's it's in its and its in its infancy right now the right wares at the moment really destroying two. Share data if we can come up with something. Because we're in between business models of the old record labels would. And the new thing hasn't really come so. I'm hoping. What do targets established a lot more power in the hands of the orders. And revenues -- If if he is going to trial -- Still need -- Let's say that the major labels got to a point where they were willing to come up with a subscription model that allowed you to download anything you want. Anytime it wants. And maybe some broad -- component that. -- streaming to have you as well and it's -- promote the -- reasonable -- and there are willing to figure out awareness is revenues. I can render what I'm doing obsolete because it would be the thing. We often go along with those. We don't want an additional subscription model and then there's the -- if something happens we're only local analyst with the consumer wants. -- can be big turn on shift. Now in lieu of that happening which doesn't seem any clothes because those people warnings labels and they don't know if there's still clinging to their corporate still -- people. So I don't see that happening in -- short arms in the meantime mr. and a look at the climate up there in two. We think is most reasonable and respectful treatment of the fair and Norris."

" Excellent next question let's move on to something. A little bit more fun Lindh berg. RM with 571. Digs asked the question. What is your most embarrassing song. On your iPod."

" What's going through my head right -- to have -- truth. The risks of -- Career ending statement about -- it. No will we started doing backstage. Before Wednesday it is. -- do -- people backstage narrows. We have pretty loud stereo or rooms and start and -- the most absurd music possible real counts and it. We take cool indie bands out with us and they hear pump up the jail. And but one of the songs we. Would also restore important. CC Aniston. Finally. Don't recommend checking. The -- and I know that finance well. It's actually have realized. Its fifth. And those convert it to -- as your ringtone. But that would be. -- so I would have to say. CC Aniston and we also have. Poison -- of the vote and that's another. But the atmosphere OK so. The other one when that it'll follow that there anybody genres of music you really enjoy."

" In Turkey to reopen the road. That goes up from -- and that's it. Let's do what's the the next question question retreat from Chris 4404. With 463 people digging in its. What advice do you have up and coming bands who choose Internet for distribution over traditional channels. So an unsigned. --"

" could go off on a tangent here real name and the tapes about the run. Here here's one other thing about lately is."

" When I started out -- six."

" And simulate eighties. Eight so. I knew I wanted to great music express ourselves that is what would become. And I was trying to I was living in Cleveland I didn't have any connections and music business. Released the thing about world wanting to seem so few years. And at that time the only way to get to that point. Most of its on to label as the ticket revealed it is. So I thought about how to liggett's onto label where asked somebody that. From the local -- of someone who and have a demo tape with three strong also. Promo picture. You ready to fold up with remorse -- strong -- Richard butler and basic Ahmanson's. So I started working on ends. Long story short it essentially work. Strategically contacted the current label that I thought. It. Didn't -- in this thinking that it would be. YouTube. And that I was emulating inspired. At that time captain about 1000 records of alternative and that's where I'd hoped to may -- So jump ahead to present. And we'll look strong supplies would be right now because it is it waited. Is. Tried to identify. What it is you're trying to do but he -- And if you're trying if you see yourself as a Justin Timberlake yes."

" American Idol fans mainstream. Super. Then I don't have much advice for you because I don't know works but it seems like you need to be -- record label over in need of Mexico. Neither marketing and their rotation. From Asian market. And so I would do what I did before following bill right away to appeal to those entities. Groom yourself to be like what -- war. And a look at that kind of harnesses. More rigorous. Base and if you are trying to change the world and you put music because that your life and is -- to realize and you think is what you're saying news. Unusual and unique and innovative and you don't throw it on the radio. And you have nothing in common with American Idol. And you don't want to be secure bundles. Then you really don't want to be on him certainly a major. Because all they want. To me it's a coincidence that. They're non interest in the news an artist. In new. Means. To -- revenues. In you'll be faced it every. And every fork in the road. That will be what at first it longevity of your vision. To win it from. So let's say that you're the latter in New York printers in the world and I would look at the strengths of what you have now that we didn't in nineteen. The huge barrier. Distribution -- to be. Major label of the trucks and drove the product to the storms have accounts with the story is the only way it was through. Physical distribution and now everybody's vote and a blogger in a publicist. In my advice he would be hone your craft first and foremost make the best. Coolest thing care. And then present and in a way that exploits at best. Resorts would delicately but I mean. Clip your strengths and present -- mixture you if Webb's remarks -- at least. Cool videos. And viral spread world over if you have to reliance something to do there. Realize it's a stone know may -- gets attention from the -- of the following up with. There's a lot more bands out there there's a lot more clutter you know I don't go on MySpace and do it seems like him begin to sort things. A second advice would be. Think of the filters. Is where you -- It used to be there was MTV -- big channel that cut across the whole country. In the states. There were one basic format of radio station as your type of music -- one program director plays at every station like please it is all want to make money and afraid of chances. We had radio and TV at we're big broadcasters to everybody if you can get on them suddenly and we saw with my shows went from 500 people showed 5000 people should get a video and can. We can toward forever and -- that one big. -- broadcasting. Network print media he's been big over rules. It was a big deal now all three of those things are gone or completely irrelevant to -- doesn't play music radio as in the count. In terms of its its. Certainly in the world I mean and Sharon. -- regular rose -- powerful. Alternative radios essentially meaningless at this point in terms of permutations of probation and."

" Print media has been. Killed off. Your sunscreen so I think about where I find music and it's usually blogs were -- for a figure out where the where the blog is an appeals to your splintered. Let's that are popular. So let's say they get the word out there that sense it lot of downloads. Obviously want to way to deal the fund. Bigger things future things for them to make iTunes. Not that I've seen personally. You know if if I were."

" Starting -- and I had a little bit of those were broke out was something windows that people were noticeable. I would probably go to appropriate that -- and set up my Monaco there so my own realistic options basically digital. Delivery service that provides the infrastructure that. What America's we built it going to build off and upload. It yourself a presence there. And hum determined some sort of monetization scheme which they -- open to you gonna subscription service for some per year in -- written without. You console charge whatever you want for whatever you whatever -- video audio books and something realistic. And Jones if -- Iraq where I would. Open for anybody that would have -- store or try to spread. Their -- to arcade far from among the kind of felt like. Organically -- hear about them. The minute you did see them there remains an elections and that's the kind of thing affair and that resonates much much more powerful than me. -- from the bottom up grass roots so marketing versus a cold place. Talk down shotgun blast everywhere you look hopefully to the paper. And okayed a Biden's group -- it's."

" I. So let's move on the next question. Question number four dyslexic like a dumb ass because I submitted myself to. And then I was told by the that it employs and I'll obviously questions -- exit from me with 440 -- What tech gadgets hardware software can you not live with now. And -- little bit --"

" It's been reported yes."

" Really it's not about exotic nothing anything things have fun mussel season mostly iPhone. I can't tell you how many times -- it's."

" who'd been traveling skiers pretty intensely and you either at dinner you're doing something on -- question and answer to it and then went and foreign you know right. And that's not specific to the iPhone -- the accessibility -- browser. Mobil huge huge change. As we've been working Euro apps for that thinking about it as a -- GPS ability. Then there's a lot of potential. Human interaction changing the way a computer. Problem I'm preaching the word. That's. Been a pretty big -- Capital here. You know we have now it's coming out and media. Any minute that it's essentially. Mobile version of the website but it adds it -- to. Talk to people geographically close to you or. Over distance and more so the idea would be at a show for example you can find anybody else that has. It's a -- and a -- for. She's there have communication with them but what's exciting to me about it is it's also mentioned people who don't have -- that are sitting at home. To continue into -- Google book club chosen real time. They consuming would have location just watch the areas on imagining what would probably based room or actually seen the show. And unfolding on blog where people the show with photos and in -- current visas. Which Republican. At school."

" It's. All right next question. When it's by halo fourteen with 389 digs. Do you have plans to release a year's zero miniseries on HBO fallen through or can we still look forward to deal representation at the outlook."

" Here's -- zero. He considers it."

" Prematurely blab about mark over -- A while ago. -- learned that. When you're working on things in the party views so excited about it talked about what you're doing. And I think I got caught one Noah I kind of spoke to -- and about that because an excited about it in the master plan with -- zero was and still it is too. Take the record and the accompanying energy. In -- and around those moments of the basically an elaborate set dressing. The record was only snapshots of situations in the world energy and gave you -- Pretty. Detailed. Page newspaper from the world and it would set -- export. The master plan has been introduced and aired live on a story telling in the world all these things support. And we discussed it being on the program for mobile world film and we found out. Really thinking. Serialized television. And there's some excellent things in the medium. So. The several months ago in -- pitched an HBO. It was well received the leading green. Something. Last week just -- that room. Pretty positive things feel -- we're getting details. It could be a reality -- and if it is then sometime within the leaders. This thing would emerge. Not in just overseeing creating. About -- It's dramatic. Unraveling. In the world. That seems like if you didn't do each it would consider scrapping -- Yeah we're not we're not ruling out anything -- got a few. Things and farms in the far. Again trying to. Tie everything. Did -- which features you currently winds are coming out -- can't have started thinking about it or."

" Also question number six by. 335 digs. What is your favorite thing you've seen done with your music by fare sales."

" Moon."

" It's tough."

" I mean right at the summit had nothing has no clear winner in their category but. I will say that it's. It's very interesting and flattering to mean to visit. The remixed portion of our website among those that don't know we've spent the last few records last few full -- start with what he's. We put a multi track so people of the."

" The ability to agreements. Whoever they want with the actual components of the soul and it's been cool to see people know utterly destroyed and some sort of create something. Interest in things it would never come up with them mashups -- that's cool. The ghosts. We do have video contests I never finished need to do so."

" Was that all of the I think I've accidentally releasing this raw. Two separate. When we did the -- record oceans. Long two hours with an instrumental music. We heard kind of we're going. Film festival. There were people would make their own video code that record was meant to be next on sharks or. Whatever. Ends so many of them came in we started reading -- that -- felon to the things get to department. There's YouTube show that hasn't been there. It's pretty so pretty and some terrible stuff with some great things to. Announcement -- the thing you mentioned was he. We tried to put. The last licensed -- tour which would make me toward film properly. We ran into bureaucratic barrier."

" So we just film that song prosumer HD cameras and put up. The last several -- fibers of camera cheese we've put all the data -- for what people do now. We're seeing the results of that coming and various sources. Wonder -- Chileans neither. -- Using it to be creative with and also note -- look at it to the -- In her car was. If I could do again I can get there are that queen's won't deter. It and -- well. Course it also need computers and didn't exist."

" All right next question question number seven from. Christ. You'll lose. -- are we at the -- is user names. 287 digs he says you should -- love the sound effects and music. I've heard you play doomed to enjoy it. What are -- the other favorite video games."

" I'm always."

" In -- video games you know -- I was there at the beginning. Media. From New York -- two that's where 600 that was the coolest thing made friends and other urgent -- to where it went and I think when I came across Wolfenstein. Force and go on but he -- and believe who was. It's wolf treaty emotional victory is. Relegating it to 86 something -- just you know believe so cool. And in -- world do. And these seem like the coolest thing I've ever cinema could use it and believe how politically incorrect was and technologically it was so far had a very. Somehow we made contact with them say were Franzen. That led to inevitably. That led to me doing -- works his way. I but meeting those guys and John Crowe American and software was. Incredible ones you guys who were of that. Smart. And had a good game and into his parents are I feel it. An alternate route mullet could've taken the route program and I think that's every bit or -- You'll. Making machine is somewhat. And credible process. You clear of any modern games -- sixties I keep up with things in an echo. Say I think that a lot of big publishers of on the routes. Record labels and movie companies where so much -- game so obsessed with this idea games to -- and experiences. Lots of money it's spent on marketing and the rendering and on a lot of money it's and anything of interest me. Rob -- pitched game of years ago. And set though with few big publishers and we've heard the same thing -- Wallace. Well costs so much to the game really into it and sequels or meat. Company and paid for marketing and."

" In the week you know I think a lot of titles like get no field of play that before it looks. At the same game mechanism but. I think with we were -- things. Via Xbox line of -- aid. So the coolest things are working world from you know -- to unload. And his friend. To which. I'll hurt you deeply gentry were still yeah. Unnoticed or -- But I think that because that's that's my favorite gamble on the road to. And I highly recommend giving. Tuna boats and the arcade version real one. It'll make inquiries. -- waited would. Let's this is pushing against my favorites -- on the classic from the simple. You know games with during."

" Yes well let about the arcade bringing back all those old school titles you can download and play the slots on. It's and it's question question number eight bimetal chick with 251. Digs. Will any of the records on your side project paper with tool frontman Maynard James Keenan ever be released. And you have any intentions of working with him again in the future."

" The question the won't go away little of those things emerging Anderson. Tape worm. And to set the record straight was. This would be -- forgetting what was but I know that I was trying to do is waste because those -- records is taking on other projects on Clinton or on kind of you're busy but the pressure analysts -- Maine and I've become friends over the years. We are trying to do this project that is. In a loner and Maynard myself and Atticus Ross has become a democracy and we see what happens putting forces. And as we both -- now we're fitting in and around our respective did you arms to emerge males. The end result was kind of this mediocre bills and and I think through lack of focus. And which threatens another factor which was. Homers command plus or."

" Not from anyone of us in particular. -- that the climate that. Forgive me for both the risk -- service. It was a real element is -- late ninety's of pressure from record levels to make money performed -- autos and earlier. -- If you get a record on the radio. Suddenly you have lots of opportunities that he wouldn't directories and you know. And it's not just monetary ideas. Different -- things open and also whether they tell your nose always pressure to turn makes something that appeals most people. And it -- under the Gaza to a courtroom never got that far and it felt like if you're gonna combined tool and and sales to be. Terror terror and -- seven. And it was felt like it was landing in seven range and programs. And so there isn't really anything -- it's great to be -- from the and I love Maynor and his good friend and I'm certain -- Anderson will be."

" Two more questions customer nine from Jacob 0251. Digs. Since your tech artist are you planning element concert -- you -- people who are willing to pay a few bucks to see concerts slash like performances on."

" Good question."

" I was thinking out -- through. I was talking with James Cameron couple years ago rumors owners -- And Cameron. -- named. Angela from. He wouldn't -- me because he's trying to get people to make as much 3-D card as possible. Two and seven to get theaters. In interpreter. -- Toro. Big -- deal. So he partnered with Jamie I've seen from the disco and they were then talking musicians about what content and the technology and showed me. A lot of stuff had been filming it is proprietary camera. So. It's pretty impressive you know one of the things that he discussed was. The technology exists now and then that you could have a concert somewhere in real time as broadcast in 3-D. Theaters. On paper that -- a pretty cool idea true -- The idea I would go see Ben -- in life expectancy crow laws and treaties to. To a -- so good maybe maybe that would be cool. So. If we can pull off something like. Will be interest and then vote. Getting into the idea trying to charge people to want something on the Internet. I haven't thought this Ruben feels like he gets into that same territory. -- selling people. -- And can't wait to upload it when you know when reform. Whatever they want. -- And we just a little battle with live nation. And you buy tickets and Richard EP three. And I see you from the idea from the mind of -- marketing one that would seem a good idea. But that guy obviously has ever spent on -- and been around. Offense interactive as the reality -- that is the first second anyone gets more. It's gonna be -- everywhere from the and nobody's going to buy a ticket because they might get a freeing. No one's going to -- your I would some fifty bucks a ticket to get. Stupid. In it's out there anyway listen when we just blasted everywhere and maybe some of those people by two things a lot more logical. But you're dealing with people -- live nation -- and the whole record industry and I think TV industry and film industry still in the world they made money doing this. And they're going to suppress and ignore. What's very obvious we're going where it is written because it doesn't fit in there understanding of how they can make -- If we do. Just to talk about ways to maybe stream. Shows -- for three known in the low -- kind of way that doesn't burden us calls and some broad and then it's and a dinner there have to talk to manager and say who's going to want to do the school thing across this much and make nothing. That was an agreement follow -- question is there's so many more phones and streaming -- filled out and actually for you. Should. On this tour. I said something on Twitter about. Snow on trying to get him open chemicals in Oracle's. If like worker you know what I have to work is that may be some -- venues -- more some (%expletive) antiquated things. -- money. But I also have to consider this to the bands on the bill that I have to respect what they want to point fingers that would. But in the instance of an inch nails were going away for a while we're not filming in -- doesn't mean dvd. And I want everyone experiences with the Europe concert a person it's better being at the concert. And and is watching the -- But before coming to where you're going to be there but rather you -- two dozen -- Of Romeo see any downside and giving anything away. I want to. But I have to consider those of the factors. And elegant thing you can for almost -- there was a way it's."

" All right last question. This one questionable chin from your mom's an Iran with two -- twenty gigs. As last year ruptured and photographed people en masse protesting the church of Scientology's. New current basis. I'm curious that there's been any tension between the two. As a result of drought covers the protests."

" Well. Not that I know of 000 uses as a club for August says. -- when you're looking for bass player Justin's name popped up when you lose interest it the lowest ratings based. And after -- moment research. Scientology's associated with it in my own experience and really ever. Met or been around anybody -- settled on -- Almost religious in anyway. Parents we additionally some local -- in the Alaska has great -- and we decided -- and and shortly thereafter being the -- we have referring talked what are. When we have some point in the an initial stages an -- and different talk about. Respect to endure Phil is a problem in his articles isn't a problem with you know vote. Most of what I know about it is -- effort through biased media portrays things as well you know. Crazy stories. But yet I media guy who's completely together in mice in the brain and smart and likeable will be completed for an. And use it all looking for a you know respectful situation to work. And so more open about. Recovering. From fees. And it's I haven't it's hasn't been any kind of issuance and in -- of in common sense and tall or so ago. You want to get into. You wouldn't put Christiane one -- told and others were created more problems. An argument Chris and so. All of that's a real world we've we've. In the -- and for the first I really thought Leo or all friends and respecting other. The crew and like each other -- adults -- wrong. And change the world. Cool."

" We'll Trent thanks so much you appreciate you coming on behalf of I have wanted to -- one is really stepped jail cells. Stay tuned we're -- be doing more date dialogues in the future so check out Digg.com for more details."

Com. " Woman don't get asked that often but it's good. I first I think has assessed Mosul a little bit off because our business model as a suit has no. So much selling digital and physical goods anymore. I believe that since we've been independent off record levels. Everything's on one part of whose records. Concert tickets merchandise.

Great Interview

That was a great interview. I think everyone should learn from his respect towards the freedom of religion of his band members. Especially considering its regularly not expressed on digg (anons).

What? No outtakes of Kevin freaking out, bowing before Trent? It seemed like a given to me...

Great interview, first time I've really heard Reznor's views, sounds incredibly smart, thoughtful. Walks that fine line oh so masterfully on most of the given subjects.
