AT&T Wants To Limit iPhone Usage

Heavy smartphone users only represent 3% of consumers, but we take up the most space in the airwaves. They want to create a way - that's still contractually legal in line with net neutrality and FCC regulations - to somehow knock down on the intense iPhone users, in hopes of opening up the network a little. Kevin thinks AT&T just needs to understand this one small concept: the future of the world. It's time to effing upgrade.

Platinum Starlight HDMI Cables Worth The Money?

Are people really this stupid? You do not have to spend $1800 for cables. A digital signal = 1s and 0s traveling through a wire = they all do the same thing whether it's $2000 or $20.

Viewer Emails

Hi guys,

I've been watching the show for years and I'm a huge fan. While I was doing the dishes this evening, our cat (Misi) climbed on my computer, selected Diggnation on iTunes, started playing it, and then unmuted the computer so I could hear it. While the rational explanation may be that she just wanted a warm place to nap, I think she chose Diggnation deliberately and therefore earned a place in our home. Here's a photo of her after I walked over to see why Diggnation started playing "randomly" (taken with a crap cell phone camera, sorry).

Keep up the awesome work.

NHTSA

Far too many people do not understand that alcohol, drugs, and driving DO NOT MIX. The message is simple guys: Drinking and Driving? Over the Limit? Under Arrest. Don’t put yourself or others in danger. Law enforcement officials will be out in force all over the country from December 17th through the New Years, cracking down on drunk drivers. Beyond putting your life at risk, you could cost yourself a bundle of time and money: jail time, the loss of their driver’s license, higher insurance rates, and dozens of other unanticipated expenses from attorney fees, other fines and court costs, car towing and repairs, lost time at work, etc. The thing is, drinking and driving can be avoided so easily. You can still go out and have fun, just plan ahead: if you are going to drink, designate a driver, call a taxi, use mass transit, or find some kind of sober ride program.

" Today eighteen TC EO wants iPhone users to limit usage 1003 Internet and people that this stories and by static nanny nine. The Wall Street Journal reported that heavy Smartphone users will represent about 3% of the customer base. But there -- mobile activities account for 40% of data traffic movie imbalance is disconcerting. To eighteenth he. And they're going to do anything it in their power. Everything in the -- guy. As much you are specific and yet so I read this story. Now there was interesting because AT&T basically has this guy that guy's name is Ralph de La Vega. He's the chief executive of eighteen -- ability okay okay so you're saying right. -- question and let you listen. Everyone's many banking entity right you year you're -- socks. He'd be talking all of the iPhone now is that I love my phone but in nineteen he had not called wilderness while walk right. So they're really not -- really see servers into. Two areas. Well first Boston tech's Amanda as a -- them to let -- up with a lest I -- as well I mean -- and I am okay -- you didn't work at all. So the other two areas that they're really known for that's that coverage from our coverage is bad data coverage yeah and the other average. Is Manhattan -- San Francisco Brett I dropped more calls here I can't access anything it's if it's horrible Kenya. So he was saying basically when they question him they're like why is this they say well we're working on its. But the problem. Is that. There are 3% of the customer base which is like. They're -- the thing geeks the people who use the data intensive applications Bryant he believes that third party applications that do other things like guys might like to stream. But African NFL football games from my DirecTV you know thing runs -- I can do that rack he's business -- the people. They're eating up 40% analysts right county saying. What they're looking to do with eighteen he is looking to do is -- to -- is these. People they're consuming like this what they're saying is that. They're trying to figure out a way that is legal that is within the you know that's not contacted. We had within the contacts. But they keep those subscribers from hampering the experience of everyone else. So -- that movie to be in line with net neutrality and FCC regulations but they're gonna do things to try and deter them from using so much. For so much. Data. Patents and what's a -- gonna say let's have a lot but they said they're saying that. Maybe a different pricing scheme based on this usage. They have decided they they haven't decided what the incentives are gonna be incentives are gonna be as with the who's calling it yeah. This is the problem I have with all of this is yes. Eighteen he has to understand. One big thing and that is the future -- I love. The world okay so we're starting this."

" Small. Impact that. I've slightly ATVs understanding the future of the -- go online it's very simple on the I mean gets us excited. Google. Voices out on on Android okay. And they're giving you the ability to use to do VoIP based calls select IP based calls okay rank the future of AT&T -- is -- is the have to exist as a data provider -- at the -- is serves as an ISP. Right okay I hate to explain this to them but the 3% that is that it is that there's 40% bandwidth."

" It's not like. They're gonna it's the right penalize those people kind of like like Crowell and moved in general you run it -- the cheaper or more than the data plan."

" Everyone is gonna be consuming the Internet like that."

" My sister and it's like."

" Learning about these new applications every single nation can have an iPhone Mina he's downloading and apps is that. Well you can stream to do this it's like it's like to keep more and more people are gonna be doing that it's not the answer is not say."

" All the -- figure out a way to get them to use less bandwidth right. The answer is okay go to the frequency yield eighteen C and say. We you invest billions of dollars in making sure that."

" This not only upgrade to three G network we have today taken so they can handle all this growth that we're gonna experience -- but that we're ahead of the curve. So that when forgy and I read this this company is the first four G network launched in the states but abroad. Yes when reports linking and stuff rather say that but -- do you think it -- G network on TV and I know that's one better than three kept that alive so clearly an idiot and I've found what you are saying though right I can't understand that it's it's not about penalizing people are charging people more money it's about say it's time to (%expletive) upgrade yeah."

" Yes yes I I I -- not always a fan of it's time to -- upgrade VBITSU. Is the best moniker anybody can have and I you surround sound systems on for an upgrade TV talk about anyway. But here's the thing is it really is only 3%. Right and that that 3%. Is doing 40%. Of the traffic went. -- account it makes sense that they would go why don't we -- these 3% -- do something with them. Incentivize them -- punish in cent month. Which maybe means hey if you lower your monthly -- that stuff will give you fifty ID certificate to. What do I do like that -- and I don't know of any any Jesus sagging music fouls and reduce her. You know might use it broke can supplement used act. As by the engines and then there's been yeah yes and fifty bucks to go along one -- ports snow maybe you're incentivized to go not -- Streamed lived the good thing for fun he's a conference party I'm gonna say hey have you just turn on the TV."

" I think is putting you I think more than anything else I think they think it did they start cock block and in and that's their morons you need that's lacking -- there and I'll -- Well here here's the thing to do -- a fickle I think I think honestly. In the back command line I think Apple's trying to funky community. I because I think that you Apple just announced like last week they announced today there are now uprooting. Real time streaming services so they have no idea you stream coming up on our application. In quick you know like streaming live video. Like how much about -- news that eighteenth he can imagine if you he's like yeah poor brother Neville we're gonna up and down and is there it is Kilmer hasn't -- the next -- Oprah in Australia and."

" Spain is really the right -- I think soccer Mac people that children's soccer matches."

" Multiple angles due to its its retarded lemon you know there."

" Apple's business you know that Apple fans the first not what do you know bad tip yeah well yeah that I get static at. And I need it's funny I think I'd love I love man I need to."

" And -- one thing. The one thing you'll say is that yeah no lasers coming on I can't really say anything about it and right but I'm gonna hold that for later. Though the one they'll say that and he did the second and move to Verizon. -- manner Verizon is."

" Another caller right now hold on mr. grass screeners -- yeah I I I easy and happy and I use that Verizon before I got to this and it was new and better if Morris. In Los Angeles. It's all about where you are -- another do it personal preferences."

" And then when we did genachowski FCC interview with Wal-Mart for a while says that he gets a lot of emails from people that are slick looking for like an iPhone so he said more than anything to get people -- when I hit the iPhone on the rise."

" It can I have Verizon these guys in the Bay Area yeah and in. What do you -- is sent mine go all my Yahoo! etc. know what what -- things that. That that we have a really hard time with -- going over hills."

" Yeah I know because that the tradeoff between the cell sites hills and in Verizon never dropped I just don't know why they had appealed the traitors and help -- Can't imagine that but it in the EV DO is that's not mean you have three GM -- like -- right. It doesn't like asks on its long three G is not let -- but I also had sprint. Even if you've -- right you don't on the Internet right I mean you know you're not plugged into Wi-Fi not true but it it's pretty -- I don't know."

" I just that and say oh I'd be happy to get off of AT&T because of multiple reasons not just the data and council."

" Speaking of massive companies Google Wave opens up to one million users 700 did you people that this or is -- about buzz addition."

" When Google asked what would you like and what you like and dislike about their new real time communication application. You unquestionably. Said that you want it more invites to share what all. They -- opened up to they're projecting one that million in invites are gonna go out to Google it. So this is an interesting thing I thought maybe I would just go ahead and use this time ago. What the (%expletive) is cool -- all about I have a Google account I've waved people and it seems pretty useless I would love to know what it is that I'm supposed to do with it."

" Oh my god did. Yeah it was so funny is he just that look at the second title of that thing that tremendous wrote to me what the hell did this thing -- with that I had an otherwise taking Google away you're gonna sitting in my embarked amazing I I mean IA."

" What the hell does this thing you know I think that's the problem nobody knows what the hell are them well because it does so let's check yes. Complete everything went well I guess we should have a good way to open up for this thank god it's so."

" The clue and why yeah. Yeah. They Google. There's local people like you know but not the way I think he. Away -- do I didn't run away with a way these things you can archive this again."

" Drill and refine the way if you. So. Done that but. That's it has I don't know you and I -- there."

" It just doesn't make. Sent me. An -- follow its outweigh the hello and follow away you if you hit stop following a wave. It's the way you don't wanna do here why don't I just wanna know what."

" It -- New England coming in Jesus success when it some of the ways. Now. Since -- just its effect on my gadgets implicit in your I was like yeah. In it's as they like it if future life maybe someday maybe. I don't I don't -- A product manager at Google. How long it'll come in there and is like seriously sit down these live guys in the right okay. What are you doing this and this isn't I think what. You think that's funny is -- we have we have a bunch that we -- new the deprived it Digg which are really excited for him to start January 1. But before he starts when it was is I'm always pushing our team to deal. Is you that we have a big company like eighty people you have teams of PMs and in the end product -- they're going off and running in trying to build products. And you can't meet every meeting right so if you're going off and you view the engineers were with a PMs."

" I lock it away if you want to get an invite and I I I didn't win I get to it."

" We've had to like them I didn't went would you like to be invited I think you the united. So what I mean any way I want you know it -- domain dot com but in general announcement there's a thing when you -- high -- back to you. And in -- idea house lunch and you can I have to say like stop thinking so much that can travel over engineers -- trial. A truck through the entire kitchen sink into something in what you really want is to say what can we do really well."

" Now -- an adjustment this is Buckingham and thing and that's all that's in the way."

" Why why this what is about it he ceiling buttons are the states I see something that's not okay so I have 12345678. 99. And ten buttons in one way."

" Let -- 111213. The maybe that you everything and fourteen the that probably more vinyl."

" That's fifteen an update but but it's like stop this is too much."

" easy to do a couple things really well in need expand from there."

" I don't know what I'm doing this looks like a complicated email program if that's what it is this looks like Microsoft Office. Like 1987."

" well look at this one that's when it this way liberals in this way. The wind is --"

" It's insanity --"

" Stupid so yes there are -- million invites. Do you need it in -- yes because anything new in Google you wanna be like had to do with it -- what. But at the end of today you're gonna you -- and eating -- weird and you're never gonna log in again. Because of anybody sent you away any of (%expletive) lost because nobody's reading ways that's what you ever be locked in this."

" Do you use taxes Clinton used Twitter somebody I just. Let's get. And if nobody knows in hiring an answer back was that way that what does -- do exactly not them. They receive good luck -- scale back in a back --"

" Connects -- the day. 1800 dollar platinum starlight -- you -- cables worth the money questions thing potentially go to hurry submitted by surfer less. So here's a story. You immediate we're did you buy those cables Wal-Mart you're probably thinking you're getting a whole the whole 1080. So this -- the this guy's saying. There is okay hold on don't buy those cheap that's 150 dollar cables there are ways in -- psalm. Electro magnetic spectrum traps. Yeah they -- your pixels. So basically it's if you ever think he's there. If you ever take."

" A look at the back of these boxes will there be monster cable in in his tying cables he could bypass five. All of back of the data cables we talked about the gold plating the titanium plating ganache around the -- the blocks outside interference. But correct me if I'm wrong. I'm well please to know we got -- and the -- this -- obviously in the analog days this was an issue if there was the yes. Outside interference -- it's distort your signal correct HDMI. Yes zeros and ones hurtling across it is liar did you did you see you're gonna get a signal we're not -- When I was in my computer back in the day in I was talking in my fat ass little cable in the back my hard drive it wasn't triple shielded. In the ass ribbon cables and they're going around into the motherboard and that's inherently it'll have exploded -- no -- I didn't have a bit of problems because it was chosen ones traveling down on that line exactly. I understand why are our people this stupid if you didn't pay 1800 dollars for freaking cable yes. We -- on the wrong."

" It's do you honestly high -- cables are our hard its its a joke on me."

" There's some stuff with especially with audio cables I get that there could be some signal degradation but not digital audio and none of digital audio I'd like that you are between the speakers I mean it acts and digital signals is because this has been sent to decode it meaning their digital speakers and an out I don't know but."

" For an HD MIK all the best thing to do is go to Fries. And don't go to the this in mind that the best thing to do is got -- go to the computer section and -- HDMI cable because they have them for computer monitors. They go to the."

" The home."

" There then went out want to last night grandmaster of the day is for backs up -- pictures go public. But the guy -- stories that a nominee actually with the through it as analog X so basically what is happening I don't wanna read the story because our -- what happened. Yeah because what I really happy you know I know Charlie's FaceBook and I'm actually here's the deal. FaceBook changed their privacy policy. Jews and basically it. Yeah and it basically needed so that when you log in would ask you to go to kind of a wizard okay I've had in this wizard he had like a big -- I think."

" It holy -- yeah off than you ought to be -- I don't know what he's a wizard you might go ahead of me because at --"

" When we should not zip privacy laws and it. And I -- the public that's not a question of the."

" Why use it with a big job that you move within tell the press that says it does."

" So basically they've to head that's a photo wizard when you go to his wizard he's got the."

" All of your options the public but your photos your friends list your wall. Why does -- ask you should -- public yes it could -- scenes as like it shows you like probably -- little -- but most people like any living up to the in utilizes periods united. I think that's not -- yes yes yes yes yes yes. A lot of people aren't gonna take the time it. And we'll talk about the actual -- well Leo the fact the fact accident. I oriented to do that a lot what happened is a bunch of people blew up about this a might."

" Cousin canceled her account."

" Instead I was not I was like that was that are baby -- Tuesday. And she sits on the night and I was -- I Apple launches again accident was sucked into an -- FaceBook."

" And I think what she's a -- the whole privacy thing choosing I you know I just don't care I just don't need my stuff out there it doesn't matter. I I email my friends -- so I canceled my accountant not like wow I didn't realize is that -- good deal."

" Okay so -- you -- backs so. Basically this at this Mark -- photos the public so about his close up and the like all the thinking you know what you zone settings. No trust me he knew that uses settings is that the public as an example saying. I'm more open about sharing messed up publicly. That those are stupid tech people that wrote that he did not use the settings on that it. So basically. All the hoopla about this is that the I I I think I know why they're doing this because what's happening is like you know they're talking about initially fueling empowering social search online. And if you take a look at what Twitter has been able to do with all the public information on all -- to public by the -- create new account right what they're able to do. Because all this is public. Is it can aggregate result of data so the -- counseling has been shared in the detect trends based on that ranks and be able to kind of build in guy actually. Grow real true real time search. And this is what there's indicating in licensing -- the search engines like being in Google and others right. So FaceBook in order to compete. Nor did you know needs this data to be public into the trying to say hate people everyone would change hamper our present policy. That's gonna be default public on you can to -- the check box and turn it off but by default public on. -- what do you do to look at the guy is still fried it until you log in that first time Andy right and you're gives the wizard exactly look at. So -- it's kind of I'm I'm gonna take a little bit of a different angle on this in the old Rangel. Most people that see this elect FaceBook Bob Bob Bob. You know. And he these is that dominant market we're gonna he's gonna say this but. If you're too (%expletive) stupid look at the -- fact that it's up and then they wanna change you think they all the -- gotten a free service you know providing Facebook's you'll pay a damn dime for the entire service. Yeah you see a lot of (%expletive) about farm bill that you don't pay any thing thing."

" If they don't want to be considered this to be a valuable part of their business they're trying to fuel and create a better ecosystem hidden in which I believe -- trying to view and then. They need this public data and they want to -- malicious -- probably."

" If you're not looking is that the first thing I did when this thing came up for me I heard something about her to do we're talking (%expletive)."

" I'd like oh yeah -- want that could probably get one -- and it wasn't that hard it's all of meaty. Thirty seconds to adjust that other friends only friends only friends differences okay here friends only say. It was all of thirty to 45 seconds to make those changes."

" Can't something something it from I don't know what is about me by almost like UT's to the department of the screen your own (%expletive) ball like. Read the screen people. Liked your I -- yeah."

" It's hard. I know that promises -- the bush the the the main problem here. I mean yes maybe they should just ask you question make it really easy second FaceBook would like you and I highly pictures she rather than be like people people people people that -- they'll look a better like tactful -- like hey we're thinking about is he. Yes or no might have you answer one question in and -- the answer pre populate the way you the answer then -- thing -- one more step would have been a little bit nicer but honestly. It's like. You've got look at this if you lose your privacy like and I should take it seriously you should read the screen. And there's too many dumb asking blocked had to say no offense in the -- this today is that it. They -- things you can continue and politicians public right."

" Yeah yeah I mean I don't know this -- who has found a little weird with -- Vista must -- is by default with public."

" And then you could turn it on -- price it right where and I always found it funny I would go to somebody's MySpace page and tabulate it you you get. -- friend of this person to see there's stuff."

" Face. -- what what. But then that FaceBook was the exact opposite right I I understood that unless somebody did friends may I was gonna see Dick squat about what -- right let me I don't know if you look to me I can take me and I sat and huge problems -- it was accounts anyway."

" So what you'll want and don't you know I'm not -- here's here's what I would say if if I had to go back in in that does the same is that we're gonna sit in there I guess if you were freaking out. I think -- lead you by default on new accounts that are created are public. And easy bring them that options page so anybody that signing up now they considers to be a big part of their business. They can make those people that they're brought it right added that contains the public facing count that's who we are now you have to choose -- you want you Pratt. The second the idea was that when you go to this wizard make sure that that's the."

" You need to talk to him music downloads and the cool air and you bought the resident who. -- mr. wizard ID dvd and yeah exactly. You call -- mr. wizard that. How did you one question rather than like you know chaining other people's stuff but all my settings just be like hey. We'd like you to do this here's the yes button here's the no button run what you want keep does not need more or yes change everything all the wizard -- now. Exactly and you move all but having a lot better than just being like oh here's a sayings and oh by the way it's among the public you and -- that's a little that's what gets weird man."

" I had yet to log in a teletype tech --"

" Yeah and yet to be presented with a gift and --"

" Our let's dig nation photo proof from William Hague that are watching this show for years and huge fan."

" Yeah and another is surely they check out stored on revision3.com. For some cool Diggnation stuff. Good for you as our holiday gifts you can also. For the holidays yet. -- a brand new navigation to this TV set multiple colors of Diggnation T shirts in the brand -- Diggnation heady and even Diggnation pint glasses. It means the code shop. Rev three. Our show -- three when you check out you'll get 10% off. Find it all stored at revision3.com. She know she -- crap you hear you also work that way and I saw it very easy three -- Google Wave it. --"

" Well I was wondering what edition is 1 evening our cat missy climbed up my computer selected Diggnation on iTunes and started playing it. And then I'd muted that computers so I could hear it. While the rational explanation be may be that she just wanted to warm place and that I think she shows Diggnation deliberately and therefore earns a place our home. Here's the photo of a her after I walked over to see -- Diggnation was playing randomly."

" When take in a with a crappy soap on camera I'm sorry about the awesome -- work will."

" So it literally pulled it up full screen. I'd muted that computer prior love this it minimized it blank. And it was -- out of it yeah yeah yeah yeah I did -- goodness and well thank you will argue it like to have your email read on -- show pleased to present to fans at Diggnation dot."

" Com all of -- it that if things it is a big if I. That way in go all dot com slash users last heroes. And I give us a list. So first let's. Let's let's record. --"

If anyone is interested in a Google Wave invite, hit me up (those who offer other invitations in return are preferred).

Also, nice to see another back-to-back tech-stories episode, feels like good old Diggnation again.

I thought it was funny how Kevin blew off the Facebook privacy story. I'm sure it had NOTHING to do with the Digg/Facebook partnership.

The Facebook CEO obviously didn't make his pictures public to show he's "open". The dude made the pics private thereafter.

That, and his friendship with Mark Zuckerberg.

Haha, these guys can be so narrowminded sometimes. Especially Alex with his twitter rants. The new retweet is exactly the same as the old retweet. When someone previously retweeted you got a tweet from someone you didn't follow in your stream as well. New retweet is exactly like "liking".

Same with Google Wave. I use it for communication with my colleagues and that's nice. It's very buggy, but that's why it's a preview version (note, not even beta). Don't just shout "what the hell is it for" and "I'm never gonna use it anymore" when you've only seen a preview.

I agree with Kevin on the Facebook privacy issues though. It seems a little weird that Zuckerberg opened his account and then closed it again, but I think people should just read the screen and think about the options (follow the wizard :-). I also agree with Kevin on the AT&T issue. It's their fucking business to sell bandwidth, so they shouldn't complain if their customers want it too much. It's the future, ITFU ;-)

ps. Why do I have to comment in this forum thing? Disqus or something seems more useful.

I just find it funny how everyone is complaining about AT&T now. I left them a year ago when they were going to raise my rate, put my 'old' phone on a slower network, and charge me more for my text messages. I wonder how long it will take for the iPhone people to be charged 25c for each kb of data they use... just to keep their fragile network intact.
