so a few friends and myself (about 4-6 total) usually meet up to hang out once a week and we are getting bored of the usual warcraft3 / aoe3 lan games that we play every so often... we need something different

anyone have any suggestions of any games that are fun to play over a lan for pc?

could be new or old games... i just need some ideas.

You can't go wrong with Counter Strike. 1.6, cz, or source is great for lan. It is usually best to have 10 people ( two five man teams) but it still works well with 6 players if you play on small maps. 3 vs 3 iceworld should provide hours of enjoyment.

CS 1.6 is very fun of course (source is for girly men). Maybe some Starcraft too?

thanks for all the suggestions...

i think we might go back to playing cs again... most of us were in a cs clan together... but stopped playing because online matches and tourneys in nyc just got too competitive and boring... it stopped being FUN

oh and we were tired of losing to the online thugs =) hopefully a few years of not playing will spark that interest again...

i'm trying to convince them to get TF2 as well... since i absolutely LOVED the original TF... im pretty sure i'm gonna get TF2 when it comes out, but i don't know if they want to spend money on it...

My friends and I get together (not nearly as regularly) and we used to play a heap the Tom Clancy Rainbow 6 games together. The games were infuriating due to crazy AI failing to see enemies sometimes and so playing together with mates was great.

Vegas is a much more cinematic style of play, but awesome as well.

Most of us were Warhammer nerds and so the Dawn of War games are great too. Company of Heroes is also excellent.

Most of the games I mention are fairly decent games, but were really held back by the lack of human players/crazy AI so you'll get a good amount of value from playing them. Also, a few of them are older games and so won't be too expensive to pick up. Vegas is probably the exception but almost all of my friends got it free when they got their video cards.

i was thinking about the rainbow six series of games... but the only problem is that most of us are going to be using laptops since we dont want to lug around our pc's...

with the older rainbow six games, i dont think that would be much of a problem... but i dont even think vegas will run on most of our lappies =)

Mobile Forces

It's not a common game but very fun for the small LAN parties.

I just bought RTS World in Conflict, and it is a lot of fun to play in multiplayer. Up to 16 people at once, huge explosions that deform the battlefield into an unrecognizable muddy pulp. No base building either, if you dont like that.

I recommend it.

Yeah, I've played the R6 games back in teh day on a laptop (I went to what I thought was a party and turned out to be a LAN). IIRC even 3 5 years ago Ghost recon would run on a laptop, so you shouldn't have problems with that. Also Ubisoft (I think) made it free for US folk as long as you agree to the in-game advertising which appears during loading. not sure how that works if you don't connect the laptops to the internet though :)

C&C Renegade is REALLY fun and will run on almost anything.

Halo 1 is the same.

UT Classic for good times.

Rainbow Six games are good for a small group. COD is fun, but would be better with a few more people. Maybe some Need for Speed to change things up.
