The US military has a voice translation device. I was watching the news when US soldiers were in Afghanistan, and a US soldier was speaking into the device and the device was translating English to Arabic.
When the device on the news about four years ago or so was only able to convert English to Arabic. The company that makes the device, said they are working on a new device that would allow Arabic to English.
The device looks similar to a very wide walkie-talkie used back in World War II and guessing it's a very small PC inside.
One of the problems, I think why the device was not ready to do Arabic to English is because when using speech recognition software is software for us has to learn your voices going out to different Afghans every day, would probably wouldn't work that good for this device as everyone's vocal chords are different. But with time, I think they will get this down.
