Seriously, Patrick. Who says that!?

Some people. I do occasionally but it's not necessary since the only real use for backslashes are windows prompts and the people using it will know which you mean.

Seriously, Patrick. Who says that!?

THANK YOU!

I am glad to know that I am not the only person on Earth that thinks that.

I say it in tech support, like when I'm describing to people how to type in something like 'ipconfig /all' or 'ipconfig /release'. Most of the people I talk to only know about the back slash. I have to be precise on which one or else I'll never get off the phone :)

I knew someone would start this thread :)

But seriously, I say it because I've found people that think of a hyphen when I say slash. Although I don't know why, maybe if I said dash, but...

I say fowardslash! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forward_slash everything ever made ever has a wiki :D
If people say slash to me i think hyphen for some reason......

OK, so I'm not crazy, people do think hyphen!

I say forward slash, always have. Mainly just for clarity I guess.

A: If you don't say "forward", they might not know you mean forward. Just because you always assume "slash" = "forward slash", doesn't mean everyone else watching the show will come to the same conclusion.

I just say "slash" -- people know what you mean.

When have you ever typed in site.com\users\name

It's always site.com/user/name

People are used to it. So no need for the "forward"

Besides \ automatically gets converted into a / in your browser.

I say forward slash. What do you call \

I'm an old school techie too, so I suppose it stems from my need to clarify exactly what key to press.

I also call it "The one that leans right"

I say it when I'm telling someone what to type...simply because I've had enough experience with that to expect them either pressing the backslash or asking what key that is half the time. Even saying forward-slash or back-slash occasionally gets a "slash?" type response.

Yeah, I say forward slash when I am talking to non-computer types. I say slash to those that would know what it is.

I don't say "forward slash" but "fore-slash". Clarity... Mind you if you're having to say fore-slash. chances are they don't know which key it is anyway.

I think "forward-slash" is a bit of a nerd joke.

Sock.

I think it is a bit of a joke as well, but I still say it. My mind tells me there's a back slash, so the contrary of it ought to be a forward slash.

The term forward slash is a relic you will hear DOS users say. UNIX/POSIX systems all use the slash, and most network applications do things the POSIX way.
But for a DOS user, this was very confusing, as you'd normally use the backslash for directory definitions and such, but the "forward" slash for accessing internet addresses or some other random applications and flags.
Now it hardly matters, as its turned into a "If you have to ask, you will never know" sort of thing for windows users, and Linux/Mac users only use the '\' to escape things. In fact, I even vocalize it was "escape a" for \a, which is probably a horrible convention as there is actually a key called esc on the keyboard. ^_^;

I don't like when people say forward slash, but I think it's a bigger problem when people say backslash when they really mean slash... Like David Hornik kept doing on the latest episode of CrankyGeeks (http://www.crankygeeks.com/2007/09/episode_83_google_urges_un_to.php).

Jeez you guys are far too pedantic - so screw this, im going back to forward-slashdot. ;)

I do say forward, and my dad once asked, but if you read left-to-right, like all good english speaking people do, arent both the forward and back slashes going 'forward'..

i saw forward slash... cause its right and backslash means the opposite. Just cause a lot of people say it wrong doesnt mean its right ;)

For clarity I often say forward slash. If you say "slash" people often ask slash or backslash. Getting that out of the way first makes sense.

Back when I was actively programming in a team environment we would refer to slash and slosh. Slosh being backslash, slash being forward slash. Even if you guys don't get what I'm talking about ... at least the wiki does (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backslash) ;).

Of couse, if we were sloshed we'd have to go for a slash ... but that's a whole other meaning :)

if it's forward slash and backslash, what's just slash then?

slash and backslash. ask any linux/unix geek. if microsoft hadn't replaced slashes with backslashes to be different from *nix, this thread wouldn't exist. thanks, microsoft, for the added confusion.

Yes I've said it since I started waaay back when. (1997 was a decade ago?!)
I don't even know why it's debatable, but oh well. To each his/her/its own :P

A lot of tech support people say 'whack' for a forward slash, although this exposes their inner geek to whomever they say that to.

hmm...that would mean the other is "backwhack."

this old geek, he wrote code,
he used ms-dos of old,
with a backwhack-paddy-whack,
throw the geek a bone,
C:\ is the same as /home.

sheez...too much coffee.

It's better than people saying backslash. As a geek I used to cringe everytime I heard people say "H T T P colon backslash backslash yada yada yada"...of course that was when people used to say H T T P...

\ - backslash

/ - forwardslash

Don't knock the Kiltinator (yes I just made that up), for the forward slash defines the slash as a FORWARD slash. Plus, I say it too, making it also acceptable... though it's probably Patrick's fault (due to heavy TSS viewing in my childhood).

Also people, lets remember.....it doesnt actually effect our lives....so lets call it what we will, and all remember the sun will rise tomorrow.

Oh. My. God.
It's all realative isn't it?

/ is a forward slash to me
/ is a switch when I talk to my collgues in tech.
/ is a wack when I talk to my network guru
/ is the keyboard button with the ? on it when I talk to my lusers

mock - are you allowed on this board with that funny hiku?
:)
