I would like to see a series of "How To" segments on building a Myth TV box.

I currently own a Series 1 TiVo, but its slowly dying. I am looking to find a replacement to the system. Myth Tv seems to have the best options for all that I would like to do with the system, but I have several questions about what hardware, and experiences with other services. Some of the specific quesions I would like these segments to answer would be the following.

- How powerful of a system would I need for HD recording of multiple streams (ie: 3 tuner cards)? I would build my first myth box for standard deff, but would look for upgradeability to HD for later down the road.

- Do standard def tuner cards handle Digital Cable channels (like The Science Channel, History International and any thing in the 200's + on my cable box) I want to avoid having the Myth Box control a cable box to get all my channels.

- What are the best tuner cards to get?

- How well supported are the Home Theater Cases like the Antec Fusion Cases? (will all the built ins like IR, LCD, Volume Knob work with MythTv)

- How can I make the case as quite a possible?

- What IR would work the best with my Harmony 850 remote?

- Are there any built in solutions for doing Location Free playing via MythTv?

- Are there any bit-torrent clients for MythTv?

- How well does the auto removal of commercials work with MythTv?

- How/where Do I get tv listings for MythTv, some charge, others are free, but many disappear or are not accurate, which source should I use?
An early Episode of Systm did this, one with Kevin and Dan. It may not help you out with all of those, but it does address some of your points...

Just wondered if we could have something on heatsinks as i have a few P4 skt 478 about which i'm going to use for HTPC's for DVD, BBC iplayer, 4OD playback and other video files plus watching web shows but been having problems finding heat sinks which are small enough to fit in say a Antec NSK 2480 case

only ones i can find are just generic which don't cool and come with fans which are to loud

Hey I'm looking to replace my xbox 360 as a media streamer. I have been looking around and would love if it could also play dvds, since that would totally replace my 360 and I can move it out of the living room and into the game room. I had never heard of the Helios series before but they sound pretty sweet! http://www.helios-labs.com/ Would love a review of network media streamers. Specially ones that wouldn't require tversity. Thanks!

Get and play with the Gigapan gadget that allows you to make Gigapixel images with ordinary cameras. If you could do a Gigapixel night shot of San Francisco, that would be fantastic. The links lead you to among other things, a billion pixel image of London and the robot that does this. Patrick would have a field day with this thing

I sent you guys a email about this...i was wondering since you guys covered the vista and XP dual boot, you can show how it goes to remove one or the other. Meaning, can you show the process of removing the XP partition and reclaiming the HD space for your Vista install...or vice versa.

Also, loved the segment about the headphone and headphone amps...you should do a bigger one with better gear. You dropped Tyll's name from Headroom. I know him personally, great guy...had a chance to meet and chat with him at several headfi headphone meets. I ended up buying one of his Headroom Millet Hybrid amps for my recabled HD650s (Oracle cable). Like the big one this year called Canjam...was insane...you can see pics and impressions at headfi, check it out. Im a huge audio fan, in fact my avatar is a pic of me wearing the Sennheiser HE90, which is prob the best headphone ever...minus the Sony R10s =)

Btw, love you both...Pat from the Screensavers, great show was sad to see it go....and Veronica from CNET reviews....and she is SOOO GEEKY HAwt =) love a women who knows her electronics, to bad they are few and far between. Bless your heart Veronica, both of you keep up the great work.

One suggestion is to move those daily tips out of the show rss. I can't take those firefox or xp tips anymore. It's just a waste of bandwidth to have these download and then deleted without watching them. I'm sure others have posted this as well but I'm not reading 27 pages. :)

Sorry Patrick, but no more funny voices. It's overkill sometimes. I respect your knowledge and experience but once the voices start I want to fast forward or turn off the episode.

Veronica is a great addition to the show and I will always follow her career.

Go to: http://revision3.com/tekzilla/

Under the tab "Subscription Options" scroll down until "Tekzilla Weekly RSS Feeds" - select your flavor of feed and insert feed into you favorite feed utility, ie iTune, Netvibes, Miro, whatever.

Patrick mentioned this in one of the early Tekzilla episodes.

They do sell dust-resistant glass cleaner, that's supposed to keep the static at bay for awhile. I'm guessing your widescreens are CRTs, and not LCDs, as LCDs don't grab much dust, in my experience.

I've been using Win 2K SRVER for years to store my files but I was wondering what capabilities some of the new NAS devices have and if they use less power so i can reduce my elect bill (trying to stay green you know). The computer I use also puts out alot of heat that makes my AC work harder, again more elect savings.

Can you review some of the NAS devices out there?

Thanks

I would like to see a nice comparison between top smartphones, the iPhone, and Blackberry. I know that everyone at Rev3 has an iPhone (note just finished watching TRS and at the end Jeff and Dan had to turn off their iPhones for the opening skit). Something in the line of cost of phone (hardware), then services that are required for the phone, and then an overall thoughts. Veronica must remain quiet and just look cute during this segment, Mac fangirl.

And to go back to one of the first posts, Pat did a TSS or few in a kilt...I miss TSS.

I know you guys covered screencasting a bit in last week's episode, but I think what would be really useful is if you took people through the production of a 'Tekzilla Daily Tip'. I'm not so much interested in the TV aspect but the actually creation of the screencast content you guys use. For instance this week's Restore IPod Music to your PC was really well done, you took a fairly annoying arcane process and boiled it down well. I work on an open source concept mapping tool, and I would love to be able to provide this type of content to our users to help explain some of the more complex functionality that isn't readily apparent when you're only a novice user. But sometimes building this type of design heavy video content seems more daunting then building the software itself.

I have always wondered how a processor works in a 0 oxygen vacuum like space. Why dont they sell procesors in a vacuum die that requires no heatsink or fan.
No oxygen no heat right?

Please build a computer case and pull a vacuum on the case.
Then overclock!!

Thanks for your consideration.

Ok,
How about this discussion.

NBC is going to use online Broadcast for 2200 hours of the Olympics, that they arent SHOWING on TV, and maybe later adding the TV broadcasts..

Even if they only let USA persons watch the ONLINE versions, what are the odds 1,000,000 are going to HIT THE SITE.

do you think it will be able to handle it, or that NBC is Underestimating WHAT is going to happen.

Consider getting a mini-itx motherboard and case to build you own nas. Some of the newer ones use only about 40 watts or so. In any case I would opt for a newer case and power supply or a used machine with less power requirements. Win2k does not really need that much resources compared to its younger brothers (xp etc). In a nas, by the time you add several drives, you are not saving that much juice. An linksys nslu2 connected to notebook drives would probably the most energy efficient and cool running.

You should replace the fake brick with black or paint the bricks black. They look really bad. You should also get rid of the v shaped counter. Just put a straight counter or two laptop holders. You should really be showing off the reason dudes come to see the show... Veronica. Why are you hiding veronica behind a desk? It's dumb... and you'd get thousands more viewers if you got rid of the counter.

Overall, I love Tekzilla and I'm sure I'll be watching no matter where the show goes from here, but there are a few things I'd like to see.

More in depth segments would be nice. It's always good to see guests go into detail on their subject of expertise. Reviews are always great as well. (Maybe your thoughts on the new Drobo?) As much as I enjoy viewer questions, they're often repetitive.

I don't understand what is wrong with cursing. Everyone does it, everyone has heard these words before, and unless your worried about your children watching this show, I don't know who would find it offensive. I like seeing Patrick in particular being as comfortable as possible. I hate the thought of him having to censor himself. That's why the internet is great. I honestly see absolutely no advantages to "keeping the show clean". If anything, perhaps a censored and uncensored version could be made available.

In general, Patrick Norton is my favorite thing about Rev3. Tekzilla and Systm are both fantastic and I really just think making him comfortable and focusing on things he is legitimately interested in is incredibly important. Seeing Pat happy makes me happy.

I'm not sure if this has been suggested already or not, but I'd like to see a segmant based around different writing software available for the differing platforms. Many technology enthusiasts that are also aspiring writers may find this a useful subject -- especially those of us who are writing blogs or attempting to get our start in freelancing.

The right software is always the best place to start.

(I'm buying myself a MacBook Pro, to finish a novel I've been working on for several years, and I'd find this kind of information very helpful as I haven't written on a Mac since OS 8.6.)

Something that was lost since the days of inDigital is the field trips.

I want to see more driving around SF while using a new GPS, or how to give up paying for internet service by mapping out hotspots along your way to and from work.

Those are just simple ideas for the big picture of Getting Out and getting some fresh air!

I agree. It seems like the show has turned into nothing more than a Q&A session with listener email. You guys don't have any real segments on the show, and you seem to just be "going through the motions" to get through it. I mean I don't know how many times you've answered the same question about "What camera should I use for YouTube video?". It's sad when some of the best shows were the early ones. The show should be getting better with time, not the other way around.

Personally, I am a fan of the brick, but that's just me. I also like the V-shaped desk. It's a little different, divides the space and and solves the issue of two people pouring over the same item without being in total profile, or getting in each others way. I do like notebook holders though and I have been trying to get some at work for a while. Still no joy there.

What really worries me about your comment though is the statement about Veronica. Don't get me wrong, I love Veronica and she's pretty easy on the eyes, but that's not why I watch this show or anything else she has done. I watch the show for every reason but that and while I wouldn't necessarily want Pat's face superimposed over Veronicas the whole time, I wouldn't want that to be a factor in my watching the show. I think some people need to try and listen to Veronica a little more closely to find out what separates her from many other female technology "pundits". I hope that not everyone feels as you do on the subject.

Thank you, sir! Exactly what I was trying to say in a different thread. Although, she is a factor of me watching the show, just a little bit. Not because she's pretty *that's established* but because she's smart. and pretty funny. Oh, and did I mention she's smart? lol.

As for suggestions, I like the show the way it is. I don't mind the wall in the back or the desk in the middle because I never really pay attention to anything besides what Patrick and Veronica are saying. With that said, I guess you guys could do other stuff other than answer questions. Just to satiate the other people that want it.

Am I the only one in the world that loves subscription music services? I save money on my mp3 player (non iPod) and it rules. I can download pretty much every album I've ever had and listen as long I pay the nominal $15 a month (price of one or two albums).

Why are the internet congnescenti still using Apples store to buy music. It has DRM for the most part, it's way more expensive to buy every single album or song, and the bit rate sucks. It's not even CD quality. Why wouldn't people buy the 256 versions and NO DRM from other sites like Amazon.com?

I can't believe people buy iPods. I have a Creative Zen that was 1/2 the price and has the ability to play music subscriptions, podcasts, and videos. I still can't believe people are into music since it's so disposable these days. What's with the "Crapple" products being "cool"? Is it just brilliant marketing? The computers and iPods look like they're from the early 2000s and I had to go through 3 iPods before I wised up and bought a different brand. My mac computer sucks too. I got sucked into the "macaganda" but realized right away that there are much better and cheaper options.

iPod headphone jacks go too quickly. The hard drives fail way too quickly. They're buggy and the come with the worst sounding and annoying headphones (and they're white, WTF?). Macbooks and iMacs suck too. I have had three of each and I finally put Vista on my iMac just to make it useable with programs that are only available on Windows. Also, hasn't anyone noticed that the mouses suck and they track horribly in OSX? Vista is so snappy and quick... OSX mouse is sluggy.... and I run Vista and OSX on the same system so I see all the problems and differences on the same hardware.

I think in a Systm ep where Pat was building some crazy rigs for cooling, he reviewed several air heatsinks/fans. Sorry, I can't remember the exact episode number, but he does talk about quiet air cooling in that one if not more episodes than that. Check that show out.

I think you should
1) Do a build on the cheapest PC you can make instead of the most expensive. Isn't there a way to make a $100 machine?
2) Do a segment on the choices that are NONAPPLE or iPod.
3) Less Viewer Questions. They're dumb and the whole show is built around them.
4) Be more "REAL". Just throw everything out there like Howard Stern. The young audiences would like to hear your numbers, how many viewers, how REV3 makes money, etc... Who's dating who. Who hates who? The only way Rev3 will stick around is if it starts to get "real".
IMO

I don't know if this has ever been mentioned, but it would be cool and very legitimate-like of you to bring people on from the other rev3 shows to do showcase or special discussion panels/segments. If you could figure out a way to work a topic with a special guest from one of the other shows, something that those hosts/personalities are into or aware of... ect.

Also, I think the pinnacle of the view questions, would be a culmination of live questions, but this would necessitate a production change.... or whatever buzz industry term.

As some other people have commented on in a round about way, you need to stay true to yourself and don't worry too much about what comes out of your mouths... this isn't FCC town... it's the internet... hopefully, we can be free from such bonds forever... as long as the sponsors are cool... and if they're not... send them to me... I won't be gentle... and I think fire is sexy.

How about a show on how to recycle old laptop hardware?????

This would be really cool to do, and possibly help to keep some trash out of the landfills (even for a short time).

1. how to reuse the laptop screen (using the old laptop casing as the stand) as a second monitor screen for a desktop or laptop (I see this as a great need for those road warriors who could actually use a second monitor screen, while travelling.)

2. how to reuse the hard drive in either an external case, or desktop system.

3. how to reuse the optical drive in a desktop system.

All of these would "seem" possible, but only the experts at tekzilla could guide us in "how-to".

I know that alot of the hardware is proprietary, however, if one looks at the big corporate players (lenovo, dell, hp), it would be neat to take a used "dead" laptop, and reuse that screen cheaply!!!!

Today I wanted to see if I could find a good movie database project (php-project) to keep track of my collection of movies.

I am guessing this is something many viewers would be interested in (or maybe have suggestions on what project to look into).

Looking for:
- A webapplication (PHP/perl/RoR - mysql etc)
- Open Source project
- Uses IMDB to find / pull out plot / director etc
- Pulls cover image from IMDB / Amazon
- Includes a link to a trailer (i.e. trailer on Apple.com)

This might sound really specific, but it would be nice to see a review of what you find. Remember to steer clear of single-platform desktop programs, that's just so 1999 :)

Ok so.. for obvious reasons i can't make an application that jumps into your bookshelf and check your DVD collection or stuff like that.
So what i need to know if i were to give you such a free-ware application with source code and everything, is how you would like to feed the application your DVD collection titles.

Would you like the application to raid your hard drive for movies or do you whant to enter them manually. They are sorta equally easy so it dosn't matter, you can have both if you'd like come to think of it : )

Hi, thanks for the response. Late last night I thought I would try out one of the php-apps I found. It's called php4dvd (http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots.php?group_id=210311) and is very close to what I am looking for.

This application has a tight integrated IMDB-search (search by title) and enables easy autoimport of data once I pick the right item from the IMDB-result. Poster is also imported. This is perfect for me.

What do I miss?
- Possibility to add my own id/group-name (to find the media quicker, shelf number etc) to each item
- Possibility to search (in own titles) using genres
- More eyecandy in presenting the movies I have
- Autoimport (or manual adding) a link to the trailer of each film (i.e. using Apple.com)
- Easy way of showing the trailer when browsing own titles (or IMDB-search results)

I guess I might enhance this app and submit updates to it, but I also wanted to ask of anyone have any suggested apps that cover this usage great (and is under active development).

I could also write one of my own (as I have done before but then without autoimport), but I would rather use an existing project than start my own. Would also be fun to see comparisons of apps like this in a Tekzilla show.

Hi, thanks for the response. Late last night I thought I would try out one of the php-apps I found. It's called php4dvd (http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots.php?group_id=210311) and is very close to what I am looking for.

I agree. Would be kinda fun to watch some tests, comparisons and so on here at TekZilla.. I got one of my own projects laying around somewhere.
What is does is basicly what you desribe. Fetches an image of the movie from imdb, the plot, top 5 actors, gener and ratings.
It then finds or well try to find (never got around to fix that) a trailer through IMDB. The movies was located on my harddrive so i had the applications scan a folder for movies. I assume you whant to enter them manually.
I'll see if i can submit a new eyecandy theme since this was dun in the early years of the y2k :P

I have yet to watch more than 5 minutes into an episode, and cannot wait to really dig in, but my suggestion is comes from what caught my eye and that is the different codec the show is availible in. I'm not sure if offering a QT HD is that great, I know it is 264 and all, but there is a downside.

I want to watch the show on my bigscreen, and like all my movies I want to do it VIA my 360 from my WHS. The problem here lies that the 360's crappy setup will only allow AVI and WMV to be streamed from my WHS. I know that I can setup a WMP11 to stream but that would defeat the purpose of my WHS, and reencoding every show to WMVHD is really not something that sounds like fun. So is possible to add a WMVHD and drop the middleman WMV? if not then I'll try and get some other method but I want to watch the shows VIA the big screen in HD and use my laptop and PC's as the show plays.

Thanks and I look forward to the shows.

I am still searching for a way to control fan speed in Windows on my MacBook Pro. In OSX, I use smcFanControl, it works great. For Windows, the only thing I can find it input remapper. I don't want to use input remapper because I don't want its keyboard drivers installed, I only want the fan speed control from it. I hears Veronica and Patrick mention "fan control" for Windows on the 8/9/08, but, the only fancontrol application I can find is for OSX. Thank you in advance!

How about a show that includes some wii homebrew installation or turning an xbox into a media center with XBMC.

Perhaps a round of reviews for the best media center solutions. Have categories for building, buying and repurposing other devices for the job. Then pick the best one considering the features, cost and time involved.

I would also like to see a review episode for tv's. Compare DLP to LCD and Plasma, also take into consideration a couple low cost projector options. Pick the best one in each class.

I think the show should show the Livescribe Pulse pen. It is a pen that records all written notes and links it to the audio recording. You can just tap anywhere you want in your notebook and it will play back the audio that was recorded at that time. When synced to the computer the software has text recognition that allows you to search your notes. Also, you can play back the notes where you see yourself writing in sync with the writing. Finally, you can upload these videos to the web and share them with people. I use this pen for college and I LOVE it. All my notes from my classes are nicely organized and when I cannot read what I wrote, which is often, I can just tap on the notes. The pen also comes with stereoscopic ear buds that allows the audio to sound like your in the room where everything happened.

How about an updated review of the Drobo since they recently released new unit with firewire and supposedly faster speed even with USB 2.0 connection.

We have a Drobo and DroboShare on our network at work and are curious about how the new Drobo actually tests compared to the manufacturer's claims.

Also looking for reviews of 24" lcd monitors for PC and the three different technologies available (TN, PVA or MVA, and S-IPS) including color accuracy and refresh rates and/or lag times. I am under the impression after visiting sites like Anandtech and HardOCP, the forums in particular that S-IPS and it's variants are the superior technology in general regarding panel speed, color accuracy and viewing angles.

What is your opinion on the available computer monitor technologies?

I'd like to see some sort of main computer & monitor (or that TV behind the hosts) used to demo everything live (and then cut away to fullscreen video for viewers). But instead keep it out of the way, under the desk, and use a wireless kb & mouse.

It's painful to watch Patrick fumble with setting something up, untangling wires or jockeying monitors for a quick demo or walk through of something. This way the item being reviewed or demoed is front & center and isn't fighting for desktop real estate.

If a new set is already in the pipeline have some foresight to integrate plugs right into the top and hide any wiring for extensions. This way there's no ducking away to find outlets and putting a speedbump in the show. Or at the least edit that out to keep it moving.

I have a candidate for software freebie of the week: Room EQ Wizard.

http://www.hometheatershack.com/roomeq/

Room EQ wizard turns your PC into a audio analyzer that, in hardware form, would cost you thousands of dollars. Using your soundcard and a mic or SPL meter (along with $8 in cables from monoprice), you can use REW to ease subwoofer placement, measure RT60, and set an external EQ like the Behringer Feedback Destroyer to tame nasty room modes.

I covered this process a year ago in Episode 9: http://realht(dot) info/EpisodePages/EP009.html

Sorry for the lack of hyperlinking, apparently the forums don't like (dot)info. Any chance on getting this fixed guys?, (dot) info is a perfectly legit domain.

And, for a product feature, how about MediaMall's Playon: http://www.themediamall.com/playon

Currently in Beta, 45 day trial, $30 to buy

Allows you to play Netflix watch it now, Hulu, and more through Xbox (no live membership necessary), PS3 (so much for exclusive), and The Popcorn Hour (the best, though not prettiest, media streamer out there, despite your less than stellar review). Plus, it's dead simple to setup, about as easy as installing firefox.

Here's a video showing the interface and usability on a Popcorn Hour A100 for Netflix and Hulu:

I've seen some manufacturers making lightweight quickloading versions of linux like Asus' Splashtop (http://www.splashtop.com/) for their hardware, but I'd like to know if there's a similar linux distro I can dual boot on my own system. Basically it just needs to load really fast and get me on the internet - anything else is icing on the cake.

Thanks!

Here are some ideas of topics to cover on future shows:

1. The issues surrounding running Mac OSX on a Wintel machine; specifically dual booting between Vista and OSX.

2. Tech gadgets for the outdoor lover; GPS devices, the ADC Summit, the SPOT Satellite Messenger, etc.

3. The new updates to the Sysinternals Suite by Mark Russinovich. Also, are there any thoughts/plans to make the full show on a daily basis?

Torrents. Rapidshare. Warez. There is a great deal of quality reliable content available online, but you need to know where to find and how to get the most out of the experience.

A good amount of time could be spent on how to torrent properly, such as using private torrent trackers to get reliable content with no viruses and no RIAA/MPAA spying on you. These sites track your upload/download as a ratio, if upload exceeds download than your ratio is over 1.0 and you have nothing to worry about, but low ratios can result in banning. Private torrent sites offer download speeds that will max out any connection.

Usually some sites have open signup, but you will then have to maintain ratio and hope for an invite to a faster site. Invites to the top sites can be hard to come by. Some of the best sites to check out are What.CD (music), HDBits.org (HD), BitMeTV.org (TV), BitMe.org (e-learning), and ScT (general, amazingly fast).

There are also hosting services like rapidshare with forums that post rapidshare links where you can get direct access to the content you want.

Feel free to PM me for more information about these.

Howdy,

While I was writing about in-ear headphones (that you mentioned on your last episode), it occurred to me that something I would really like would be to use the apple microphone/controller on the iPhone, but with headphones that actually sound good/don't irritate my ears...

So, as a show idea, could you do some research to see if there is an adapter that has a microphone/controller and that has a plug for the headphone(s) of your choice? Or should I break out the soldering iron and have at the one provided by Apple?

Questions that I'd like answered are what the Joule rating has to do with the protection value of a surge suppressor and what one NEEDS a power conditioner for. I'm looking at surge suppressors now and I feel unusually uninformed on the subject, and google isn't being much help.

I also heard about AlwaysVPN from CommandN, a technology show based in Toronto. They also use AlwaysVPN for watching Hulu and the like.

I wonder how long it takes the various RIAA/Hollywood/TV lawyers attempt to shut AlwaysVPN down for allowing improperly licensed international media distribution. I hope they don't, but then they wouldn't be the pricks that we all know and love (to hate) if they didn't.

With the demise of TVTonic, I was wondering if you might have some suggestions for a replacement of this great piece of Media Center software. I'm interested in something that would aggregate vodcasts via RSS feeds and either locate them to a specified folder, or better yet, has a similar add-in/UI for MCE.

I used TVTonic to watch your shows, and currently, I can't even add new RSS feeds (I'm using TVTonic for MCE2005). Apparently TVTonic needs to interact with (the now extinct) Wavexpress servers to add RSS feeds - so contrary to the TVTonic post mortem message, even the software itself is essentially dead.

Thanks,

Miro (http://www.getmiro.com/) might do most of what you want.

Thanks for the tip. I checked Miro out. The main problem with it - no MCE interface. I use this on my HTPC (viewed on my TV). It's just kind of a pain to get out the MCE keyboard with it's crappy joystick mouse thingy, close MCE, and open another app to watch video podcasts - especially if the app requires using a mouse to interact with the program. The MCE/Remote Control integration that TVTonic had was great.

I imagine this might be of some importance to the Rev3 guys. I would think that a good RSS aggregation tool integrated into MCE (like TVTonic) would increase their viewership. After all, it's how I found their programming.

By the way, TVTonic is fully dead now - I can't even open the app anymore - what a shame.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway xcorvis. As it stands right now, I'm kind of stuck with RSS Reader - a "sparse" plugin for MCE that keeps me in Rev3 content anyway. I'll keep scouring.

If you guys could please do a segment that addresses this question, I'd really appreciate it. I have a feeling that a good portion of the recovering TVTonic addicts out there would appreciate it as well.

I would too get killed if I spent anything more on new computer equipment. I can get replacement parts with family approval.

Just to set the record straight......

The hp mediasmart server is just a plain old file server that can specialize in distributing media. To my knowledge, IT IS NOT A PVR (personal video recorder). You would have to pay extra again to have those features. A computer with a tuner card and WHS could "possibly" be a pvr and a file server. MYTHTV/Linux (with a tuner card) is definately both a file server and a PVR if you want it to.

We were using our test install of whs with a tv tuner card and it worked great. Once i did the last update, it no longer worked. Whs is now wiped out and we are using fedora 10 with kdetv to watch television. You can watch tv on a linux box that has a tuner card without using mythtv. Xawtv probably was the one of the first tv clients. Tvtime is another good prorgram to watch tv with a tuner card without using mythtv. Yes, you can capture either video stills or the whole stream to disk with those programs. . Tvtime, Kdetv and xawtv are easy to load with a few button clicks.

I would like it if there was a linux daily teck tip.
I agree, this would be a cool thing to see. I can understand not doing it given Linux's poor market share but I don't know what it's like for the tech savvy Tekzilla audience.

Is it just me or does it seem like Patrick seems to enjoy racing through the written dialog until he is talking so fast it's barely enjoyable. Many times I almost find the show unbearable because he seems to enjoy plowing through his scripting and showing us how adept he is at reading fast. It just seems to be getting a little out of control. I enjoy Patrick's reviews and thoughts, I just wish he'd slow down and put some expression and variance in his speech.

Also, can we PULLLEEEAAASSSE change up the script a little bit?

1 - "Upload that puppy to youtube" is getting painful.
2 - "The whole video question dialog - The amazement of all my friends..." Operating a webcam and surfing to Youtube isn't a big deal anymore.
3. "A website that we just can't get enough of because it's too darn......"

REV3 is a professional company. You have great technology, let's up the ante on the dialog and copywriting. The level of editing and production is fantastic, but I think the dialog and spoken elements of the show falls short of even TechTV and the Screensaver days.

Just my two cents.

Thanks,

Jeff.

Hello from Australia. Love your work Veronica.

I too would like a review of some NAS devices. I am solely interested in the QNAP TS-209 series models. The following models I believe are probably the best for SOHO users at reasonable prices. The first three models are what I am most interested in. I have tried the "Live Demo" of these models but it fails to login.

How about a show covering the latest A/V receivers, amps, etc.. I don't think they ever have reviewed receivers and such -- Sherwood, Sony, Mitsubishi, etc.. "Killer Home Stereo Set-up for under $300" with a $99 Sherwood receiver, some Cambridge Sound Works speakers, etc..

Also, the whole world of car audio/entertainment beckons. They don't have to cover the entire spectrum of every possible possibility -- just hit a few highlights at the low and mid price ranges.

Also, maybe throw in a guest or 2 occasionally, talking about their new exciting product or company. It doesn't have to always be about product reviews and viewer questions, does it? And mix the set up a tad. Have a couch or 2 in a corner and talk there. Being behind the counter makes me want to give you my coffee order. :)

Should Patrick Norton film an episode wearing a kilt? Have an idea for a cool segment or product review? Whatever it may be, feel free to post it here!

Should Patrick Norton film an episode wearing a kilt... Heck Yes! I proudly wear kilts. Mostly at renaissance fairs, but i have been known to wear them randomly around town be it going to the local Bucky's convenience stores, or going to Wal-mart for some groceries, etc etc... Wear your kilt with Pride Patrick!!!

Idea for a cool segment or product review.

I've been working on designing a new computer. Originally I was planning it simply to be able to play Assassins Creed on it because my Girlfriend, future wife, got it for me without knowing i didn't have a powerful enough computer to run it. I'm used to playing old school Diablo, Starcraft, Warcraft. The most powerful game I've got the specs for is half life 2... sadly not enough power to play Assassins Creed. So i decided to start designing my new computer. One that can run Assassins creed (obviously) but I also need it to be able to run Blizzards upcoming Diablo 3, and Starcraft 2,

I think for a show segment you should assist in designing a computer that's able to run the new Diablo 3, and Starcraft 2 but won't break the bank. Preferably a system that one could build on their own.

Thanks Patrick and Lady Belmont! Love the show!

I'm currently going to school at ITT tech for Network Administration, later going after a bachelors in computer science. I have been trying to find ways to improve my skills / knowledge / experience to better my IT career, as well as skills to allow me to stand out in a resume / application environment so I can get that good job. I haven't had any luck finding any IT fields for entry level experience.

Idea for a show segment, how about one on ways to get into the IT career field. Be it Network Administration, Computer Programming, or even Game Design. How does one go about finding those kind of jobs besides the usual monster / career builder etc etc.

I would like to see a review of this product:
Walking Hot Spot (http://www.walkinghotspot.com)

just imagine you go on vacation or are going to the park or where ever and there is no wifi connection and you want to get online with your laptop and your friends laptop. Instead of going out and trying to find a starbuks or somewhere else, all you have to do is look at your phone and see that you have 3G service and then turn your phone into a hotspot for you and your friends and you all can rock the net with 3G speeds.

I tried this reciently on a trip where we were not able to get on a wifi (the place had a pay for service ($25/day) and no more wifi's in range. So I downloaded this to my phone and we had wifi for us all for the entire week.

agree. ... using GoToAssist to show how to do portforward in the router ...really?? yeah you click here and type this number here...then the same numbere here .. and yeah...type the computers ip .. ....and you should use a static IP on that machine...not gonna show how to do this on the router.....bye...

mrpolyester

Yeah... When they are quite simple topics the GoToAssist isn't very helpful. Also aside from sponsorship and cost what is the point of GoToAssist as opposed to TeamViewer (which is free) or any other remote application? Also, what with all the OSX? Windows is quite a bit more powerful. PC's rule.

judaz
07-05-2009, 06:17 PM
dot really see the point for GoToAssist or similar solutions for non business issues. Solving common tech issues for friends and normal people...sems the most common problem is that they cant get online..... what am I suppose to do with a remote assist program if i cant connect to the ones I'm trying to help? ...

remeinds me of one of the biggest ISP's where i live, and their moronic support team.

Mostly in the past...
you called up to their support asking for help to get online...and they kept telling you that
you should go to their homepage, there was a simple guide....
..you told them, well I cant see that guide because I CANT GET ONLINE!
...ooh ok, but if you visit our home page.... and so it continued until you hung up..

(This was 10 years ago when you just couldnt run to a neighbour to get online to see this guide..
..a guide that you really never had any use for anyway, because the problem always ended up beeing an issue that the ISP had, they just didnt tell the support team, and the guide was totally useles... (have you plugged it in, have you connected power to the modem...duh! ....kind of like Changs "point and click"-shows ... a guide to the bleeding obvious))

Tekzilla Daily Tip Suggestion --

Need access to a progam, but the Run box isn't working or is blocked because of a virus? You can launch programs from the Windows Help system of almost any basic Windows app like Notepad or Paint!

Open Notepad, Paint or even Calculator and click on Help then Help Topics.
Click on the menu in the upper left corner and then click on Jump to URL
In the box that comes up type the path to the program you want to run in URL format, such as "file:///c:/windows/system32/cmd.exe" and click OK.
You'll get prompted if you want to save or Run the file, just choose Run and there you go.

1) I suggest doing a small segment on destroying media, as in, getting rid of data that you don't want anyone to ever see again.

I remember on an episode of The Screensavers, Kevin demoed a few different ways to destroy CDs. One of the ways was a microwave.

It was actually a really fun and truly informative segment.

2) Another idea would be showing how to quickly fix one of the iPods that were known for giving the :( Error when the only problem was a loose hard drive ribbon cable that could easily be remedied.

Thanks a lot!

After taking Episode 97 to heart and building my own Hackintosh desktop machine, I'd like to install Mac OS X on a netbook or even a laptop. It would be really great to get Colleen back on the show and educate all us new Hackintoshers on getting our netbooks and laptops up and running with Mac OS X. Well an easy way to destroy a CD och DVD is to use a shredder
ex. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3677172

using a microwave on a CD sure is effective and fun to watch, but it can potentionally mess up your microwave.
so use an old one you dont need, and dont sit to close while "cooking CD media" .. just in case.

If its a harddrive you want destroyed, I can recommend

It's a OLED handheld linux based gaming system with touchscreen. Videos on youtube show people playing emulated SNES, Gameboy Advance, not much in-depth reviews. Kidzui is worth looking into as a kids version of the internet that can be monitored by the parent and that has kid suitable content. Step 1: Open your machine
Step 2: Look how your current harddrive is connected. Take out one cable, look at the connector, is it shaped like an L |____ Then you can use SATA drivers.
Step 3: buy the SATA drive of your choice.
Step 4: mount the harddrive in your computer, connect a power cable and a SATa cable to the drive, and connect the SATa cable to your mouther board.
Step 5: start the computer.
Step 6: Windows Vista should find your hard drive as new hardware.
...you will be asked to format the drive to be able to use it.
Step 7: if the last part of steg 6 didnt happen.
go into Control panel -> System and mantainence - > Administrative Tools -> Computer Managment. in the new windows choose Disc Managment (in the menu to the left) your new drive should show up here. click on the drive name .. for instance disk 1 .. you might be asked to initzialise the disk.
do that .. right click on the right portion of the graphical representation of the disc, choose create a new partition..
Choose to format it ..

Step 8 _: done.

(and if you get problems and you machine is a few years old, make sure it can handle SATA2 drives if that is what you bought .. (that is RTFM) if it doesnt .. jumper the driver or use software from the manufacturer to set the drive to SATA1 mode)

...hopefully. apollegize if some names are not corretly translated.. wrote this in a haste and i sit at a computer running a diffrent language then english at this moment....

The last show (episode 104) talked about re-purposing old hardware with FreeNas (episode 60 of Systm) and unRaid (episode 108 of Systm). However, it was mentioned that older hardware can eat up electricity. That said, could you do a show building a NAS server from scratch using cheap hardware that would avoid using massive amounts of electricity.

Openshot

Hi just idea. Veronica on Episode 104 said she had broken dvd drive on her laptop and this makes it hard to install Snow. i had problem only month back ware a user had lost there password for there g4 powerbook and wished to install 10.5 at the time the dvd he had was dual layer and his little powerbook did not support dual layer dvd's. So a mate said to me to use my intel Imac with a firewire cable in Target mode to install OSX. This done very easy the mac that has the working dvd drive place the cd in it and with the other mac hooked up with a USB2 cable or firewire cable hold down command T at start up. a big firewire icon will show up then know it's working then turn on the mac with broken drive and hold down command c as you would if you are installing off the dvd drive. p.s. make sure to have the osx install disk in the dvd drive of the target mac. you notist it will start the install. target mode will allow you to mount all the hard drives and dvd-roms from one mac to another. hope we could see is done in ep for others help alot for me maybe help Veronica with snow.

I have been looking for a good alternative to paying for cable. Playon allows me to watch hulu, and netlix on my ps3. With their opensource plugins playon users can get many other video sources into their living rooms. I was wondering if the people at tekzilla could review new applications from zilliontv and epixhd that are coming out soon and how they can get onto a living room tv.

How to set up, configure, install, and migrate data from this forum to a new forum. One that is actually easy to read, easy to search, easy to reply. You know EASY TO USE. This forum software bites the rhino's rear... and is so needs to be Audi5000.

You're a high TECH show, with a unnavigable and confusing FORUM with poor usability QUES and LAYOUTS.

Just thought I'd suggest a show on replacing it and migrating the data.

helo everyone...

the show's great, i love it.

i was thinking... i'd like it to have let's say 1 or 2 mins with tips and tricks on programming stuff, webdesigning and so on.
just some quick hints about new stuff coming out, like jquery plugins, new frameworks, css3 techniques, statistics about browsers....

what do you think?

congrats, guys! :)

ps, Veronica... you're perfect.

Thats the kind of thing Systm always did, but there now. Although, I was just recently watching a Tekzilla episode from earlier this year and they said that they and Roger were preparing a new show for Deecember, and were asking for user input. They aren't accepting any now but this "New" show might be the next Systm. Keep your fingers crossed.

Hello all.
I moved from Greece to the US and the premier date of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in the US was 1 month before it was in Greece(can't find it easily in cinemas because I fell in the crack). Is there a helpful/useful/irresistable(good for the abstract on the show) site for this situation(legal please) so I don't have to wait till December?
It's not the first time I missed out on a movie for some reason or the other.

Thanks

I was watching Epic Fu when it hit me. Tekzilla should give everyone whose question is used on the show a tshirt.

I would like to second this show idea. With all the new cable card hardware (that was always gray) it seems like a great time. I am sure that integration with Windows 7 and WMC is one area that a lot of people will have questions about.

As for me, i recently lost cable, and have no dtv tuner. I have road runner and a stable connection. I have a rather standard config in terms of other hardware; one brand new i7 rig and an old dell 700m lappy with a cracked display. What hardware (ie Hauppage 1250?) can i install to A) receive broadcast tv, B) DVR it (optional), C) stream from one of those pcs (pref. the lappy which has an S-Video out) to the teevee upstairs? I am also assuming that if i can stream and control from upstairs, that there would be a corresponding application for internet tv too.

I can run some cat5 upstairs to where the tv is so having the laptop with a usb IR receiver isnt really an issue.

ps love the show

OK, I hate to be mean, but....
What is up with Patrick Norton's exasperated demeanor? He has become so annoying with his flamboyant gestures, nerdish gestures, and how he interrupts, I'm dropping his shows from my feeds. He should take his know it all, smart-ass attitude and create a show for people who like that. Many of my friends have also noticed how bad he has become. Sorry man, but you need to take a few breaths and chill.

You know what annoys me? When whiny punks post the same exact thing in 4 different forums.

Get a life, it's only a show.

Lots of gadgets say they're waterproof and the likes, but how far can they be pushed?

The Register left a "waterproof/fireproof" USD drive down a well for 9 days (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/11/19/review_storage_external_iosafe_solo_usb/page2.html), I'm guessing it wouldn't be too hard to set up some similar tests for other devices claiming they're tough enough to survive anything.

Easy - wrap your head in tin foil. Problem solved.

So when I'm waking down the street and I see someone wrap in tin foil I know it is either;

a) a Christmas wrapping session gone bad, or,

b) hellhound

Could you please do a show about high end/profesional flashlights focusing on IP/EX-E range, and not the HIGH SPEED LOW DRAG TACTICOOL OPERATOR FAST SELECT HIP HOLSTER flashlights
