My favorite working directors are Scorcese and Tarantino. Neither are in their prime anymore but their films are always pleasantly surprisingly good. My favorite's of all time are Sergio Leone, his last 4 films are masterpieces, and Fellini, particularly 8 1/2 and La Dolce Vita.

He's a genius, our minds are just too immature to "get" him.
I'd say Scorsese as my favorite working director of all time, and Spielberg never disappoints (shut up, I liked War of the Worlds). But you just can't forget Paul Verhoeven. Hells yes, mother *****es.

I love listing directors. In no particular order,

Robert Altman
Paul Thomas Anderson
Cameron Crowe
Martin Scorsese
Peny Marshall
Hal Ashby
Kevin Smith
Darron Aronofsky
Christopher Nolan
Ingmar Bergman
Shyamalan --> Not a great director, but has the potential to be great. Needs to stop writing screenplays and direct something that expands beyond his supernatural/faith driven hooey.
