i use a VCR, sometimes one of the computers and i have a MythBox ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MythTV ) as basically a DVR in the living room...it's running dual Standard-def tuners and a 2.6GhZ P4 with 768MB of RAM, ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 and a DVD Burner, and those specs are way overkill for MythTV.

SA Explorer 830HD - Dual channel HD Cable DVR supplied by Time Warner. Not quite as flexible as my old ReplayTV (man I loved commercial skip), but dual HD tuners makes up for it.

I use the same device as T/U. I used a TiVo before. The SA device has no where near the TiVo capability as far as interface and connectivity. However, it is inexpensive to rent (less then the TiVo service itself) and has the dual HD tuner.

Mine is currently running a Passport interface (Panasonic??). I want to say that the boxes are beign released in some markets with an interface licenced from TiVo, but could be wrong on that.

I built up a BeyondTV Box. Has a Hauppauge Dual Tuner Card. And a ton of HDD space.

I think the real question is what's worth keeping. recording it just means you don't have to be infron of the tv at 9/8 central. If that was rhetorical, just ignore me.

I have two VCR's one in my front room and one in my bedroom...I really want to geta DVD recorder and I need a cord long enough to get to my TV to use media center. (have a big list of tech/gaming stuff I want)
So much to buy so little funds.:(

I record NFL/college football sometimes..I used to record stuff also off of Tech TV.

I record a shit load of stuff - mostly so I can watch something on two stations at once. The best part of a DVR isn't recording the shows themselves, but the time shift aspect. Its a subtle distinction, but it means I can choose when to watch waht I want to watch, and skip the ads.

I consider "recording" as being stuff I want to keep long term. Most of my stuff last 4-5 days at most.

This is the only way to do it.

Other- I employee a court room artist and stenographer to keep a detailed log of shows I couldn't watch. Next year if I get a promotion I'm going to go ahead and splurge on a sketch comedy group to reinact everything for me.

I’m sure most, if not everyone, watches some TV through out the day. A DVR enables you to make the most out of that time. On Thursdays we are able to watch 4 hours of TV in 2.5. Also the regular daily shows get cut up by fast forwarding through crap interviews or not so funny sketches. You cut out all the fat and get right to the good meat. Torrents are great if something doesn’t get recorded or I forgot to set a timer. Really though the DVR is the easiest thing.
