thanks everyone. Why does everyone always want a solution to something but they are never willing to pay for it? 24/7 surveillance is not cheap. So, unless you are willing to spend some money, you need to get over it. You also need to take a look at how much money you are going to be spending vs. what you are protecting and figure out if it's worth it. For example, I don't pay for alarm monitoring because I think it's a waste of money. Anything that gets stolen I can have replaced through my insurance company. If I'm home, I'll obviously know about it, and can cut out the middleman and directly call the police while I wait with my 40 rd. clip Glock. Smoke detector monitoring is worth it, in my opinion, because that can alert the fire department to save my house when I'm not there.
I bought a few of these to put around the house: (do not buy them at that price. They were $79.99 on newegg when I bought them. No clue why the price has gone straight up, but it will come back down...)

They work on my wireless network perfectly. I have them set to take a picture every 15 seconds and then upload it to an off site webserver. That way, they can't break into my house and just steal the device that is storing the camera footage on it. You can also set it to record video if it detects motion.
Second, I can connect to these camera's from anywhere in the world via a web browser and check out stuff going on around my house if I want to.

If you know the guy who stole your stuff. Hang the evidence, beat the shit out of him. He's unlikely to complain if he's got you stolen shit.
Meanwhile, invest in a good set of locks.

I'm sorry as hell to hear this Rick. I've had a several things stolen from me and as much as losing the items sucks, having your privacy violated feels almost worse. My neighbors of 2 children and a mother got robbed and the idea that a group of men chose them makes me sick. One of my most cherished belongings is my cd's, and have had a hundred or 2 of them stolen. The last time it happened was 4 years ago, and yet, to this day, (monday actually) I still go to my collection trying to find that one song I hadn't heard in a while, only to add it to the list of missing. I hate thieves, and stupid ppl.

Someone recently tried to steal a car I had just barely bought a month ago. It's not worth much of anything (I paid only $500, value is about $1200), but a pain in the ass nevertheless. They didn't plan on the battery not being hooked up though, they tried to use a screwdriver on the ignition and when that didn't work, they tried to pull it! After digging a long path in the ground about 30ft long they gave up and left I guess. After that I set up two cheap $30 webcams up with some software to record to a external drive. They never came back though.
