that's pretty amazing. How do they get lightning shots anyway? When you they know when to push the shutter?

Great photos!

They are time exposures (look at the boats on the water and the cars on the bridge). You set to aperture priority and set the f-stop as high as possible. Put the sucker on a tripod and open the shutter with a remote. If the storm is freaky enough, you'll get a few good bolts.

The photographer committed the classic blunder. He showed off too many photos. He should have picked the best one and only showed it. People tend not to appreciate the great photo if it is buried in nearly-great photos.

It would have been awesome if he composited the shots done from the same angle. Photoshop CS3 can blend the pictures together, even matching the color balance. In fact, all the pictures were taken from the same position, the photographer just rotated the tripod. You could composite and stitch your way to one hell of a poster.

Wow masherscf, that's quite the response. Greatly appreciated though.
I was wondering Heyseuss what camera and lens you are using. Awesome shots!

I thought the first one was great, then I was pleasantly surprised a little more each time as I got to the last one. The last 2 are scary. I don't mind how many photos they sent me, as this was my old home and I haven't been there since 1999. In the first few photos, I can see the last place I lived in that city back in 1996, and in the last 2, I can see the first place I lived in that city in 1983. The many other I lived places in between those years are 45 mins away, so it's kinda funny coincidence, that my firstand last houses there are visible.

The person who took these isn't even slightly amateur. Your suggestion would be good though.

I should post some photos of the same area in normal weather.

I'd have to ask my friend who took them and sent them.

Here's a link to stuff I've taken. Check all the sub directories and 'view all'. all my stuff is taken with an SLR and is never 'chopped. I know nothing about scanning or photoshop or digital photography, yet I know alot about digital video. Weird huh.

I never suggested he was. The skill of the photographer is obvious. This kind of photography is not easy. Plus, the camera itself is quite nice to get the shots without too much noise.

Not bad for an amateur chick though huh. I have a feeling it's a nice digital quick shot type thing. I can't see her using a digi SLR.

I would almost have to be. Most point and shoots are far to noisy for long exposures. There are exceptions.

I live in the lightning capital of the world, that looks normal to me.

The photography is amazing though, even if I do really...really...hate lightning.

It's getting funny. I couldn't recall editing that last one, then I looked closer at the name and laughed.

Great pics, and those last couple are frackin scary as hell...I don't think I've ever seen a lightning bolt that wide before. That's real wrath of god sh*t!

I think the last one is the best.
