The fall is here, and with it comes complex, Oscar-caliber films like George Clooney's latest, Michael Clayton. Alex, Dan, and Jeff give their review.
Land of the Lost has had 2 different Saturday morning incarnations. The guys discuss whether it deserves the big screen treatment.
Casting news continues to leak from the JJ Abrams Star Trek prequel. The guys review the leads and give their take.
The trailer for the new film, Jumper has the guys psyched!
This week in Video Games:
Alex, Dan, and Jeff have opened up the Orange Box and found a lot to like!
Medal of Honor used to be the franchise to beat when it came to WWII. The guys play Medal of Honor: Airborne to see if it can reclaim some of the series' former glory.
Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass has finally hit the DS. The guys made use of their 10-hour plane flight to check it out.
This week in TV:
Heroes returned for season 2 while the guys were in London. Back in the states, they give their take on the first 3 new episodes. Thanks, TiVo!
Speaking of London, the guys also enjoyed some of the UK's cool time travel cop drama, Life on Mars. Thanks, wideawakewesley!

They did that to make it compatible on the iPhone, I also dont like the switch because Ive noticed the quality went down a tiny bit, but all of Revision3's Large Quicktime shows are now .m4v

Great show guys. I guess I'll finally have to check out Puzzlequest now that its on 360.
And Dan, thanks for representing my views on Heroes. I couldn't figure out how to describe my problem with it relating to the dialogue, but you summed it up nicely. Also, I too agree that there is no such thing as a good 'payoff' on the show, it has the other 'p' word - completely 'predictable'.
o yea and great job on the intro! Great great work.

Top notch as always. A couple comments:
- I haven't watched the second series of Life On Mars yet, but the first blew me away. I think it is one of the best shows ever made because it deftly combines so many genres into an extremely well-made package.
- I also can NOT listen to music while running (especially on a treadmill) for the exact reason Jeff states: I find it incredibly disconcerting when my pace does not match the beat of the song to the point where I find myself taking tiny stutter steps or super long strides to keep pace with the treadmill AND the song. (The gym in my apartment building finally put in TVs, so this problem has been remedied to some extent.) Thank you, Jeff, for making me not feel so alone in my quirkiness :)

I laughed my butt off at the UK show. Wil told me you guys had a good time but I had no idea until I saw the video of the "Tea Incident." Glad you guys got to go.
I will definitely have to look at the Orange Box game. I am a sucker for older games.
I am ironically giving away some older games on my website Take My Tech (http://www.takemytech.com) (sorry for the link drop!)
Peace out guys, congrats on 30!

Awesome show as always guys, good to have you back Stateside!
Notes:
- You guys missed out on Top Gear while in the UK. Its easily the best show ever, Clarkson and crew going ape-shit on new cars with crazy challenges (such as this week's assignment of building amphibious vehicles and crossing The Channel), not to mention the often hilarious "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car."
No worries lads, you can still download the episodes at Final Gear (http://www.finalgear.com).
- Orange Box? Yes please! I've got in on PC and I feel like I'm rediscovering how awesome Half-Life 2 was all over again. Portal is mind-blowingly awesome, but I'm unfortunately stuck for a moment, but a quiet moment to think will certainly help at some point.
- Mike Clayton? I plan on seeing it soon. Out here in the "boonies" (ie Michigan) we don't get the new stuff right away. Still cain't wait for Lions for Lambs as well...

This was anther good episode. I am ashamed to admit it. Please, help me with the opening. I have no clue. Funny as it was. The bloopers also.
Far as Heroes. I could never watch the first episode of season 1. Just didn't like it and I was disappointed. I had such high hopes. But I did get through most of the first season and liked it enough to get the DVDs. I like the whole thing more after seeing everything. Even the Ali Larter character(s). It made more sense in the end. Now the second season has become the same thing. New characters and such. I see Heroes as a comic book. It is an ongoing story. Problem with it on TV is, TV is presented in seasons. So for the second season, there has to be a set up all over again, while maintaining surviving characters. I trust that the season will all come together again this year. Kind of a double edged sword for producers/creators/writers.
Now on to Wes, (WideAwakeWesley I think). I think you can be officially called the fourth member of TRS. Not only for the quantity of your contributions, but the quality. You may be the guy to put that impossible bridge between the UK and the US, well for entertainment. I will be painfully honest. I have NEVER enjoyed British comedy. I just don't get it.
There are US comedies I just can't tolerate also. Caddyshack and M*A*S*H are examples. They make me physically ill.

I seriously got a little emotional at the end of Episode 2. Seriously. Portal? Effing amazing, and yes completely hilarious. Especially the credits, that killed me. I beat 5 out of the 6 advance levels, which are maddening. I so need more Portal levels and I can't wait until the community starts developing them. I was a crackhead and TFC was my crack, when it came out. TFC2 needs no introduction. Love it. Look for me, usually aiding my team as the medic. Same user name kids, AntuniAki.

You guys have earned major points for doing a Shaun of the Dead spoof. That is perhaps my favorite movie of ever. Though, I have to say it. Dan, you make a bad zombie.
Great show, as always. I wanna hear you guys talk more about Portal (Alex NEEDS to play it). I don't think I've played a game that can top it's humor.
As for Heroes, I really do hope it pays off. I neglected this show for so long and now that I'm excited for it, the show decides to go down a notch.
Although, I will say that, as a Lost fan, I like that episodes aren't always revolved around one character. I don't know how many more Jack flashbacks I can take on Lost, and I know I'd hate Heroes if there were a ton of Claire or Nikki episodes.

Post reply the Claire story for heroes is stupid. Since when does a stalker equal romance.
Life on Mars, I know they use to show it on the BBC America channel but I never found out when they aired it after the first season.
Also will the TRS talk about the Doctor Who Spinoff Torchwood?
bananaboat
10-18-2007, 04:16 AM
The stalker guy becoming romantically involved with Claire, pretty much sums up why I think this season of Heroes is off to a poor start. Claire knows that they are on the run from people that want them dead, and instead of making sacrifices like a real person would, she's determined to blow their cover and get them all murdered. Every time I want to believe that heroes is going to get past it's comic-book inspired roots, and have characters that aren't basically retreads of real comic book characters, they start recycling powers (Another guy that flies? Come on). I guess it could be worse though, everyone could cry black crap out of their eyes and magically choke people (or worse, everyone could have the power of stopping their sibling from doing the magical crying-choke thing)

Great Ep as always.
I'm right with you on the "meh" feeling about Heroes Season 2.
As Dan said- The writing on Heroes is pretty terrible. Characters talk in such a broad and unrealistic way it just yanks you out of the show. I think the writers traded in their pens for sledgehammers, they just smash their way to the next plot point with no thought of nuance or discovery.
But Heroes always does something that makes you think "Hey, that was kinda cool", and you keep watching because they throw in those little hooks that keep you reeled in (albeit shallowly at this point).
This is why I still cannot wait for you guys to finally dig in to LOST season 3. There was a hater pants fashion show around here during last season, but now that the dust has settled we've seen Heroes prove that it's just a good, yet extremely flawed show that's fun to watch, while LOST pulled out more aces in the final stretch then a Saturday night in Vegas.

Hmm... ok. I understand. But here is how SOME people think about it:
"Hey, these 4 guys put out a show from their garage that I can download for free. I happen to enjoy it and want it to continue. I have a skill set that allows me to contribute by spending some time making a banner ad. It didn't cost me anything, and I end up feeling like a part of a community. That's a win-win."
If you don't agree with that statement, please do not participate. But we have a lot of talented people here who seem eager to help us grow our audience (for which we are grateful). We humbly suggest they focus their talents in a particular way that most benefits us at the moment. I don't see how this is taking advantage of anybody.

I will even add, Jeff (beautifully said, btw) that I *DO* get paid if I was useful to you. Not all payment is about money - but I would never do anything unless there was something in it for me! I read too much Ayn Rand for that! Here's what I get:
I get the pure joy of knowing I helped out the show and more importantly, some guys who I would love to have as friends.
I get to feel like I paid these guys back, just a little, for the FREE Totally Rad Show I get every week.

I remember on Facebook Pepsi or Coke was doing a competition where they wanted facebook users to design a new can design. The prize was ridiculous (in a bad way). I can see how people, myself included, found it wrong for a multi-billionkagilion dollar company to give pretty much nothing (it was like $200) when a real designer out there would be getting a lot of money for the same thing.
Having said that, this is not Coke or Pepsi. Like Jeff said, this is four guys sitting in a garage giving out a FREE podcast every week. I submitted a banner idea already because I'd love to in some way be a part of the show, and this is how I can be. If you disagree with how they handle things, then make the decision to not partake in them, don't spoil it for the rest of us.

Jeff, I understand what you're saying. However, the contest is to make an advertisement, to pull in more people, to get higher numbers for advertisers, to make more money for you guys. It just kinda sucks man. It's like people working for free on an "indy" film, only the "indy" film pulls in money and doesn't cut it w/ the people that helped make that money. Sorry if people disagree with me sticking up for "the people" but just because I really like a show doesn't mean I'll blindly follow. That's probably the end of my rant.

People contribute to TRS because it's a cool thing to do and a nice outlet for their creativity. It's not something like (to use an exampe) Rifftrax, which both charges for its (IMO mediocre) content while still pleading for more money with a Paypal account.
Considering it is basically '4 guys in a garage' THE TOTALLY RAD SHOW has a remarkably high level of production value. And anything we, as fans, can do to show our appreciation for the effort made each week is faaaaaaaar beyond the lame nit-picking of peeps like you.

The Totally Rad Show currently makes no profit and pays no wages. Jeff, Dan, Alex and probably most importantly Steve work for nothing. They provide us with entertainment for nothing. Sure they'd love to be getting paid (like Alex does for Diggnation), but right now, nothing.
Now I can say straight off the bat, that I'd would gladly give up a reasonable chunk of my time to help these guys achieve their dreams because not only would it make me feel f*cking great, it'd also make them feel great and seeing as they're putting in the time every week to make me smile, I think they deserve it.

Getting away from topic just a little but regarding something said in the show: ALEX, do you notice a difference in taste between American Kit Kats and british Kit Kats? I SWEAR there's a difference (I still get a bunch of them for X-Mas every year, and I would VERY much like someone to back me up on this one).

I can't say 100% it's true, but as far as I'm aware all chocolate bars differ in taste across the atlantic.

Ok, So I'm a bit late to the party, but here is my two cents (and we all know what that's worth).
We, as fans of the show, have already created a great deal of material. There is a fan site, a Flickr group with tons of awesome Photoshops (about half are Serenity's ;) ), an IRC chat room and I'm sure there is more. All of this was done without the TRS crew asking us to do these things. We did them because we are fans of the show and want to see it do well.
So, that said, why would it be unreasonable for us fans, who really care for the future of this show, to be asked if we'd help? Sure the backgrounds are fun and there is definitely a sense of 'payment' for that, as Serenity mentioned, but the banner ads are something that could really help the show grow greatly. This is a grass roots kinda thing going on and it's pretty damn cool...er..RAD!
Ok...now from the designer point of view. Having done design work and been in design circles in the past, I know there is great passion against 'free' design work. Many people and businesses will try to take advantage of designers, especially young ones. This creates a culture of hostility towards doing anything for 'free'. It can sometimes be irrational, but it comes from real and unfortunate past experiences.
So while I think the request for banner ads is totally acceptable and reasonable given the culture of the fan base that has grown here I can also understand where the 'designer' may feel slighted.
Maybe for future requests make it a 'contest'. Even if it's something small like a t-shirt or a signed group photo or something like that. That might make the request easier for some to swallow and it won't be a huge drain on your limited financial resources.

Even though I don't agree with Johnnyrad in this case, (I know exactly what his concerns are because I've seen it before) ...no one's opinion in the TRS forums is pointless...that's what makes it great.
I've spent some time doing a few things for the fellas out of support that no one will see but them and I don't feel ripped off because after all, they are just a few guys volunteering their time at the moment...and are asking the "TRS Community" for anyone who has time to volunteer as well. No harm, no foul...and if they could afford to pay people for their time, I'm sure they would. I'm sure I'm not the only one excited to see where the fellas go from here...
hell, they've only done 30 episodes and already they have a London episode with Dan experiencing Tea bagging...no wait...er....I mean...ya know how...*gestures with his hands*...when you try and....wait...*clap*....it's cool when the....*clap*....what I really like is....*short pause staring off into DanLand*....ok, remember when we've seen....*puts hand on Jeff's shoulder*....I think what I was going to....*quick camera shot at Alex's smug grin*...I agree with the way....*clap*...what I'm trying to say is...*clap*...the way it was done before....*clap*....."Nevermind, it's all good."

Great episode, guys, as always! I just have two gripes:
---------------
I'm a little surprised that all three of you were skeptical of JJ Abrams hiring unknowns for Star Trek. Let me ask you: how many A-list stars were in Felicity, Alias, or Lost when they started? Hell, Evangeline Lilly was modeling controllers on Tommy Tallarico's show. You can't get much lower than that job.
---------------
I know you guys were down on the start of Heroes this season, but frankly...you weren't nearly down on it enough. The beginning of this season just exemplifies everything I dislike about Heroes. Nearly all the characters on the show are self-absorbed, the writing doesn't flow naturally but instead serves to manipulate the characters towards more "dramatic" outcomes, the dialog (as Dan pointed out) is terrible, and to top it all off you don't really get that much entertaining use of powers (just look at the season one finale - you have the two most powerful people on the planet and they only battle it out for a minute or two).
For some reason I still watch the show (probably because I'm addicted to fantasy-based TV), but I'm probably in the minority that things The 4400 is a better show in every way (aside from production value). Just look at the differences: The 4400 has a message and it has profound things to say about society and human nature. Sure, at times it can be a little cheesy (it is a USA show, after all), but I think it's a lot more worthwhile than Heroes.
Sorry, I felt I had to rant. Oh, and also, what's up with Sylar's mullet?

Jeff, you are not alone in your podcast listening while running.
I always listen to 1up yours when I go for my Saturday morning run.
I've even watched TRS at the gym.
Wait, Dan was a zombie? He looked like he was crying and hugging himself. LOL.

I just thought Dan was supposed to be half-asleep.
I've been fighting the temptation to freeze-frame the opening to see what all the tapes in the box were (I thought that was a clever change).

Holy shit, is that The Quest (the one with a young, post-E.T. Henry Thomas) that I see in the box of VHS tapes in the opening of Ep. 30? I remember that movie being totally rad, but I'm afraid to watch it again for fear of it having lost its magic. Any comments?

Great show guys as usual. Just thought I'd chime in on the "free design" issue here. I've worked as a designer and illustrator for the past 12 years, and currently run my own design studio, so I've gotten my fair share of "design us a website for free and we'll give you lots of exposure" requests. In general I have exactly the same response as johnnyrad had. My time and skills are worth something, they took a LONG time to learn, and I shouldn't work for free. Most of the time these requests are nothing short of exploitive.
HOWEVER... in this case we do get something back, as others have said. We get a great show that entertains us every week for free. So in this case I think the guys are perfectly right to ask for a little help. If this was a primetime review show, I'd be calling foul as well, but given that no one gets paid from this venture (yet!), I don't think it's unreasonable.
Now... if only I had time to do a banner or a background... sigh.

Danny T. I am hurt lil' guy. Wes and I responding to THOSE posts made us need a room? Hell dude you must have been bored. All I say is when Wes helped you all in making a good show in London. That is a lot toward being Rad for a show over there. Especially if he doesn't make anything off of it.
Wes. What you said about Steve? I guess DANNY T there will reccomend a room for the three of us. Steve is truly the fourth man. Every wise ass comment I do and don't think of as I watch is on screen due to Steve.
Ok Wes. You will have to suffer as the fifth Beatle here.

Jeff just wanted to say thanks for heads up on The Shield. Just starting on Shield Season 2 after watching Sn 1 last few weeks. A true gem. Can't wait for the next dvd to show up in the mail.. so thanks man!
Also, I totally agree with Dan about Heroes. It is an insult, an instult! to television! I worked on first season production of Heroes and can say with pride that I never read the scripts and never watched the production. Totally contrived.. bleh bleh bleh!
Keep up the good work on the show.

Agreed, Portal is one heck of a well put together game. It's also made me a huge fan of Jonathan Coulton (http://www.jonathancoulton.com/). He's the guy who wrote the ending ditty to Portal in addition to the "Code Monkey" song. Great stuff.

Wow! I had no idea. I'm pretty shocked. TRS is doing a lot of good for Rev 3's rep; it's the highest quality show the company produces by a significant margin. I don't know what the viewing figures are like compared to the other shows... but judging from the forums, it looks like TRS has the most engaged audience of any Rev3 show. That high level of engagement should be of value to sponsors; and, to be honest, it should be of value to Rev3 too.
Is there a reason that Revision 3 haven't sold any sponsorship deals for TRS? I hope that, after working for nothing, when the sponsorships finally do come through, they're worth significant amounts of money, and that the guys get a big chunk of that cash... they're the ones creating the value, after all.

I must admit I skipped through this forum...but, I did notice the comment about kitkats tasting different in other countries. Now what I can say is the kitkats in New Zealand blow them all out of the water...they are made there with natural full cream milk...insert a Homer-esk.."lala".
Oh and just curious...as a kid I was crazy about The Goonies and collected the bubblegum collector cards for the film...were these available in other countries?
p.s. Love the show guys keep up the awesome work.
