View Full Version : One thing that has been bothering me about 'Heroes'. Can anyone explain?

So, I love Heroes. It is currently one of my favorite TV shows. But one of the things that has been bothering me since the early episodes is whether the future can be changed or not. Let me explain.
One of the things I liked most about the early parts of the series was the fact that they could not change the future. For instance, one of my most memorable moments was when Hiro and Ando see that the girl in the comic is about to get hit by a truck, so they have to save her. But, in trying to save her, the truck swerves towards her, just as it did in the comic. I loved this. Sure, it had been done before in movies and such, but I loved seeing how the future played out, whether the characters liked it or not.
Another scene that was in the "future paintings" was the atomic bomb going off. But this never happened.
This discontinuity bothered me, did it bother anyone else? Or, am I missing something.

Well, you could view it as, the 'present' as they know is, was already altered in the past, in the future... So, Hiro's hero (whatever his name is.) has all those legends about him because Hiro went back and made them so. So, when he grew up, he learned of those legends, and the guy became his hero, causing him to want to be a hero. So, the future is changed... In the past... which makes the present we see as "normal" as it is. Until its later changed... in the past... in the future... Bloody hell, can we just have The Doctor take care of this?

Perhaps they can only change events through time travel.

The only thing I can think is that the future has been changed...Remember when in the subway, future Hiro said that Peter looked different without his scar...then in the episode where present Hiro goes into the future, Peter has a scar and is with Nicki, the bomb went off(Peter), Nathan is bodysnatched by Sylar, etc, etc. By stopping NYC from blowing up, the future is different, Hiro became a Hero by facing off with Sylar, Peter doesn't have a guilty conscience from blowing up the city. Also, Ando is ALIVE!!! Future Hiro was glad to see him when present Hiro and Ando went to the future. Ando was killed in the explosion in the alternate future. I hope that isn't too much to follow. I can follow it, of course it's my thoughts:p

Obviously the future has changed because Nathan won the election before the bomb went off, when Hiro saw the bomb go off, and I'm assuming Nathan becoming a drunk meant that we was not very electable and did not win so the future can therefore change.

Do we know that Nathan didn't win? I mean Mikah said he took care of it? So I wodered if he was a Senator...I'm sure many Senators are drunks, he he

Yeah I thought that too but I am just assuming he lost.
Also something that has bugged me it that Hiro saw the bomb go off during the day but in the final episode of the last season the final climactic battle (yes, climatic is a strong word to describe 4 badly edited punches but you get my point) it was night time which means that something must have already changed for Peter to be still worried about exploding. Just dont know how that has worked.

hmm...true, I would think it was more of a writer oversight though:rolleyes: But one thing can be definite, the future has been changed from the episode where Hiro traveled into the future.

Let's see if I can put forward my hypothesis. The timeline as I see it...

I love the diagram especially using the Back To The Future structure.

Thanks, here is one that I am making a Hybrid of Back to the Future and Dragons of a Vanished Moon(Dragonlance). It turned out like crap though cause I couldn't get the file size down...Oh well..

Well, the main thing that bothered me was that in the beginning of the series, they made it seem like the future could not be changed (as evidence from the whole comic book incident that I described). I really liked that about the show, but now that the future can change, anything can happen. This kind of takes me out of the series.
Not to mention some of the new characters/stories are horrible!

he he, yeah I can follow you...I didn't read the comic series so who knows...I won't draw another timeline(I promise:p) But maybe there is an end result that the Heroes will come to no matter what, they just diverted the path a little-(sans original timeline:p) but they will come back up to the inevitble fate that lies before them. Kinda like <>(not a drawing) the paths diverge, but come back together in the end(man I want to draw another timeline):D

Did somebody tell you NOT to draw one? heh, go ahead.
The comic book incident described before (which took place in the TV show, fyi, not in a comic you didn't read, gglynn00) does not mean that the future cannot be changed. One incident isn't enough to prove "fate". It was completely possible that it was a coincidence. (And a writer's tool to teach Hiro and Ando to be careful with the choices they make.)

Well the future does "happen" but not always the way its dipicked in the paintings, Issic dident die in the exact way he painted himself, and the bomb did go off, only it was high in the air, thats my way of seeing it anyways

Who knows? The series finally might end with NY exploding like in Isaacs painting after all?
