Hey all,
So since it came up in the intro thread, I thought I'd start a thread to plug my podcast, "Wormwood: A Serialized Mystery."
Tragedy forced Doctor Xander Crowe down the pathways of the occult and he was forever transformed.
Now, chasing the vision of a drowned woman, Crowe finds himself in the haunted town of Wormwood, where evil lurks in the shadows and stains the souls of its inhabitants.
This is actually a full audio drama, complete with a cast of voice actors, original music, and sound effects. We've posted 14 episodes thus far. The season runs 24 episodes.
We've tried to create a TV show without the video. The structure of Season One, however, is really that of a novel; each episode is another serialized chapter. By the end of Season One, you'll get the answers to the main mystery while at the same time opening the door for all the new mysteries we have planned for Season Two (and on).
Our influences range from The Shadow, The Hermit's Cave, Lost, Hellblazer, HP Lovecraft, Hellboy, Twin Peaks, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to less obvious influences like the 1980's Uncanny X-men (and the way Claremont would intertwine long-running multiple subplots) and Veronica Mars (the way the first season really felt like a novel when you were done with it).
If any of that sounds interesting, please give us a listen!
You can subscribe on iTunes (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=261086208) or visit the site (http://www.wormwoodshow.com) to listen.
I'd love to hear what you guys think!

I plan on listening to this tomorrow night, while there's not much else going on with my Halloween. I'm excited, it's like missing an entire trade of a series, and getting to read all that to catch up. So much fun.
Downloading now! I love radio drama.

Jbeck, you are THE MAN!
Before I met you here, I saw your review of the show on iTunes. I told Jeremy Rogers (co-creator of the show), "Damn, we couldn't have written a review this good! We should get this guy to write our press releases!"
I'm stoked that you're enjoying it! We're having a great time making it, but it makes it even better knowing that people are digging what we're doing.

Cool - trying to help spread the word. I don't know anything about " old time radio drama " , so the whole format seems new and fresh to me. I work late at night so I have a perfect time to listen on my drive home. Also really dig the supplemental stuff on the website, too...it makes the experience really immersive.
By the way, eps 11 +12 really creeped me out...who played Julien Calendar ?

Calendar was played by Rob Grindlinger, who also plays Sheriff Bradley and Cedric Bloomington. He's great -- one of our most enthusiastic actors.
I'm glad you like the additional stuff on the website. We put a lot of work into that, and I wondered if many people even bothered with it. My goal is to get some more fiction up there soon.

I love old radio dramas for the camp, and occasionally for the story. I'm, finally, a few episodes into Wormwood. It's really not my kind of story, but I'm hooked. The voices and characters are great, and the writing is superb. The only reason I'm not finishing it tonight is because I know I'd be pissed when I iddn't have any to listen to in the coming days.
I listened to all the episodes today as I worked. Great job. I love the simple explanation of Dr. Crowe's origin and the gimmick of his hand. He's a great pulp character and the actor is fantastic. He's like an occult version of House, the TV show, in that his worst enemy is his own temperament. I also enjoy how we get several episodes in before we get any solid hints to the backstory of Sparrow and Crowe and of Crowe's hand.
The only two general weaknesses for me were the cast size and the music. I don't mind the huge number of characters but because your actors perform double and triple roles, the serial doesn't have the sonic range it should. When a young actor plays the oldest man in town, the voice work veers into cartoon cliche. But on the whole the cast is great. There just needs to be more of them.
I like the tone of the music but there are times it's just played too much. The trademark creepy tune doesn't work when played under the intense exchanges between Crowe and the Sheriff. It would be better silent.
It's all a wonderful commitment to audio entertainment on the web. Xander Crowe is a great creation and I hope many adventures lie ahead of him.

You know, it actually means a lot that it's not really your type of story, but we've still got you interested. This is really a case where I tried to put a LOT of my influences into the story, and so it's got a little bit of everything.

Great observations, too. "House" and "pulp detective" are two terms that came up a lot in our initial development of the character and the show, so you're right on the money there.
I also agree with your assessment of our weaknesses. I'm juggling a relatively large cast (for a podcast), and that causes scheduling problems. These actors are all talented, but we're doing this all with virtually no budget, so our deal is that we have to work around the actors and keep the recording sessions to a minimum (we actually record 8 episodes at a time, once every other month). An even larger cast would be proportionately harder to juggle, so I've tried to keep it as compact as possible. That said, I would like more range, and I'm looking into that. (Incidentally, Harlan -- the old man in episode 15 -- was my decision. I decided he should be a 1930's analog for Jimmy Details, and I thought I could get away with using the same actor).
Season Two, which we're planning now, will be a little more episodic in nature, and it will also feature various characters from our ensemble facing new threats. I think this is where we can really expand, and i think the episodic nature will help the stories seem a little more compartmentalized.
My music is something that Jeremy and I go back and forth on. We had a great composer create these pieces for us, but how we use them is squarely on our shoulders (we rotate who edits together each show). You may be right that we're over-using it at times. I'll definitely keep that in mind as we go forward.
Thanks again for the comments. We really do take everything into consideration. This is a labor of love, and we're not above making it better! ;)

OK, slightly weird bumping my own thread, but just thought I'd update you all.
This past weekend, we finally recorded episodes 17-24 -- the final 8 of Season One.
I'm pretty proud of it. I think we really crank things up for "act three" of the season, and I'm fairly confident in it after hearing the performances this past weekend.
This batch is gonna be hell to edit, though. I couldn't get all my cast together at exactly the same time, so we had people recording in sections, often without the person they're in the scene with. I know this is fairly common, but I really like the organic process of actors playing off of each other, AND it's much easier to edit. :)
Still, episode 17 should be online by tomorrow morning.
We're also getting some nice reviews scattered here and there on the web, so I've added a section for "praise" on the site.
Question: I'm thinking about a break between seasons, and doing shows during this off-time with the writers and actors...sort of commentary, Q&A, and Behind-the-Scenes stuff. Maybe even answering listener mail...that kind of thing.
Would you guys be interested in that stuff, or would you prefer just the fictional content?

That could be fun. I'd listen to behind the scenes. Rado drama is such an intricate thing, especially with a cast as big as yours. I'd be interested to hear how it all goes down, and what not.
Question from me: You've been calling this "season one". Is season two going to follow al the same characters, or just follow the same town?

"Necromancy and the Art of Making Friends" -- probably my favorite episode title yet. It just captures it all, doesn't it? :)
Anyway, this one's near and dear to me because even though I don't take a scripting credit, I had a heavy hand in shaping this one, and it's got some really funny bits in it. And some dark stuff, too.
So check it out!

I'm really enjoying the Podcast. I've listened to it through Episode 9. Typically, I'm not a big fan of radio drama, but I've been burning through Wormwood pretty quickly.
One particularly clever aspect of Wormwood is Crow's tape recorder. One problem I have with radio drama is that characters sometimes have to explain what we should be "seeing," which sometimes comes out clunky. Crow's "notes" are a neat device.
Wormwood is a lot of fun.

12-03-2007, 09:47 PM
Thanks, Smaktakula!
Oh...the tape recorder...I hope you're not too attached to it...well, keep listening....;)
But, anyway, we're really conscious of how you tell stories in audio. If you've listening to episode nine, you've probably also noticed some different techniques, like using one character to describe a scene to another character. Maybe not everything works, and I'm still finding things where I wish we had tried something else, but we really are working to make the audio storytelling as descriptive as possible without relying on a single narrator.

Wormwood is absolutely amazing.
I downloaded the first five episodes when I first saw this thread a few weeks ago and then yesterday while looking for music to put on my mp3 player I saw my Wormwood folder and thought "Might as well." My only regret was that I only put the first episode on my mp3 that morning because the commute to work would have been a lot more enjoyable had I been able to listen to more without having to wait to get home.

You can skip the two little teaser things that come first, but you really do have to start with episode one. We've basically constructed something like 52 in comics or 24 on TV. It's a serialized "novel."

A poster asked about Season 2 of Wormwood, so I thought I'd update here.
Episode 23 (http://wormwoodshow.com/?p=185), our penultimate chapter, is online. This is a kind of wacky episode. It's really all over the place, but if you've been following along, it definitely contains the various aspects of the show...it just slaps them all together.
It starts with a little pulp story about a boxer in LA. It's got wacky, late-night vigilantism, and a little brooding drama from our resident metalhead.
Next week, Episode 24 and ANSWERS galore!
After that, our intention is to keep the podcast going with some "DVD Extras", including interviews with the writers, the actors, some teases, etc.
After that, Wormwood Season 2. This should hit around April, and we're currently writing the first 8 episodes. This one should be a lot of fun. There are a few serialized thread, but also a few more episodic stories. I don't want to give too much away, but there will be a lot of new threats and more from your favorite characters. It should be fun.
The extended forecast also includes Wormwood Season 3, which will be our final, apocalyptic season.

Should be fun to hear some new stories. also, episode 23 sounds like fun.
So, I've found myself in a predicament. My iPod is nearly full. Full to the point of "Sync the last 5 episodes" of podcasts settings. I'm not on the last five episodes of Wormwood (so behind!). So now, anytime I got to listen in my freetime, I realize I can't. I'll have to remedy this.

Hey, Dave, I just listened to Episode 1, and I'm going to give it the highest compliment it could ever recieve: I'm going to listen to Episode 2. (I mean that as a good thing.) Good work!
I think the move to more stand alone episodes, if that's what you meant by episodic, would be a great thing. If I hadn't listened to 18 or so episodes back to back I'd be lost, at least more than I am now. The cast is so huge it's hard to keep characters straight, especially with so many doing multiple voices.
Two parters would allow for a cliffhanger ending and a story more detailed than the typical installment of The Shadow. But unless you're going to move to daily broadcasts (!) following a sprawling epic like Season One is almost impossible.
Having said all that, I enjoy the show. Most episodes are great. The only repeated pitfall is when the writer sacrifices character voice for an evocative phrase. For instance, in the current episode there was a neat description of a shroud of cigar smoke that made a guy seem bigger than he was. Cool description but seemed too poetic coming from a boxer.
Here's to many more seasons!
dave-accampo
01-15-2008, 05:13 PM
Thanks Race and Tad!
Just put up episode 24 last night. I hope it works as a season finale. We really tried to position it to give answers while still showing that there's a LOT more to explain (in season two).
Tad: We've had our writer's meeting and started breaking down the episodes. It looks like there will be serialized elements, but we're also focusing more on stand-alone stories. So there will be, as one example, an entire episode dealing with a team of Ghost Hunters coming to Wormwood. There's still a larger arc at play, but I think we're trying much harder to make a complete story out of most of the episodes. The first episode will probably feel a bit like the first season, catching up on changes since season one, but after that...
Oh, also: I understand what you're saying about the boxer...we were trying to go for a little pulp storytelling there, and I had in my notes that Mason was an odd mix of boxer and educated thinker, but I think that it just didn't come out that way by that point in time.
We're finding our way. I'm very excited for Season 2.
Re: boxer
My hunch is that the sort of character trait blending, part boxer/part poet, is tough to do with voice alone. If it's a main character who gets lots of airtime there are plenty of opportunities to play the shadings and for other characters to comment on them. But when it's one guy in a huge cast, it's very hard unless you're playing it for comedy.
Now excuse me, I have to download!

I think you're right. We may have aimed too high on that one.
That's another thing I think will be helped with our more stand-alone episodes. In Season Two, we'll have entire episodes focusing on smaller groups of characters, which will help us flesh out the individual characters. At least that's how we're approaching it. We'll see how it comes out in execution. My writers are busily writing...

Well as you may know I'm a fan of Watchmen and when I heard P.F. Montgomery of the Fuzzy Typerwriter podcast make the claim that Wormwood was the Watchmen of Podcasting I had to look into it. The series is a dynamic throw back to the old fashion radio dramas of the early twentieth century but it throws in a modern sensibility that makes it all but stale.
Wormwood is what I could only describe as David Lynch writing a Lovecraftian occult movie. If you love ether you should start with Wormwood episode one, you will thank me!

In case you haven't noticed: Wormwood Postmortem #2 is up! This time we have a Writers Roundtable Discussion with two members of the writing staff. So, if you're interested in the collaborative experience behind Wormwood, check it out!

I finally listened to this and I loved it, I learned a lot from this and the show before. Thanks for doing them. Also Dave you're pretty good at the interview thing, I'm thinking you should do more of these shows and just toss extra content into the feed.
Maybe even do some one shot spin off's where you take a character and tell the story from their past, mostly Jimmy Details :D

Thanks, man! I'm sure we'll do more stuff like this in the future. I had always intended to do something like Postmortem, it just took us a while to get to it.
We've talked about one-shots, spin-offs, and bonus episodes before. So that's not out of the realm of possibility.
We just did our first Wormwood Season Two recording session. Some GREAT stuff, but we're going to have our hands full in the editing room...

i (FINALLY) listened to the first episode dave (i accidently downloaded the teaser stuff rather than the actual episodes themselves, that's why it's taken me so long), but i have to say this is excellent! you managed to craft a very engaging story, comlpete several facinating characters. I adore Crowe and the actor you got to play him is fantastic. Best moment in the first episode? Crowe running into the diner yelling "RESTROOM?!?" i can't wait to check out the rest of the first season
Hey Mike! I'm glad you liked it (and finally listened :D)! I'll be curious to see what you think after you get through the entire season. I think it holds up as comparable to a season of a TV show in the vein of Lost. Well, that's our aim, anyway, but I think we did okay.

They turn up later in the feed. 10-12 are reposted after episode 19. You can also choose to direct download them on the Wormwood site.

Paper's always quick with the save! Thanks, man!
Yeah, the Episodes 10-12 thing comes up all the time. iTunes is supposedly not caching, but they clearly are. What happened was this: we changed the servers for storing files during those three weeks. Same feed, just different location for the MP3 file itself. After those three weeks, we changed everything back, fixed the locations in the feed, reset everything, and...we waited. And waited. To this day, iTunes still has the record of the original file location.
I'm not the only one to experience this, of course. From what I hear, it's one of the frustrating bits about iTunes.
We've done our best to re-post the chapters and mention it on the website, but I know that over time people run into this problem again and again, and I wish I could change it. But... iTunes rules the roost in this case. ;)
Anyway, I know you've got the episodes by now, but...I just needed to vent. :D

The last of our Postmortem shows are up! Jeremy and I answer listener mail, including some great questions from one Paul Montgomery of the Fuzzy Typewriter podcast! :)
There's some good behind-the-scenes stuff in this one. I think you guys will like it.
Check it out here. (http://wormwoodshow.com/?p=199)
This is spoiler-ific, so keep that in mind...

Really liked the Postmortems. The mail-bag episode especially. It would be cool if you did more of these in the middle of the season, even if it was just a mail-bag show at the halfway point.

Yeah, the listener mail show was a lot of fun. I think having something in front of you to read helps to spur more natural conversations. It also helps that Jeremy and I are so damn familiar with the material we're talking about.

So, Season Two is imminent, but we're already getting some interest from other podcasters.
We were mentioned on the DoubleDorkMeter podcast. And Snark Infested Waters has contacted me about an interview. And another podcaster with a show called Geek Cred.
And today we got an email from Icebox Radio Theatre, an online radio station, which would like to feature Wormwood.
This...it's just very flattering. Yes, I realize I'm talking about my own podcast in my own podcast thread. But still. I wanted to share.

Can I send my praise to Baba Yaga? I mean it would only be fitting since I sacrificed some rabbits to her the other day for new Wormwood... I know that rabbits aren't that great of an offering but... um... yea I got nothing.
I can't wait till I get it on the Ipod, I'm going to take the long route to work just so I can hear it.

Alright, I think it's time to finally bump this thread back to life.
Episode Nine of Wormwood: A Serialized Mystery is online now! (http://wormwoodshow.com/?p=226)
We've had a bit of a hiatus, but we're back in production and Season Two SHOULD continue mostly weekly throughout the remainder of the year.
Lots of new people on the board, so in case you're curious and you're starting on the last page of the thread (as I sometimes do): Wormwood is a full-cast audio drama for your MP3 player. It revolves around cantankerous occult detective Dr. Xander Crowe, who finds himself brought to the small town of Wormwood by the vision of a drowned woman.
We've got a full set of 24 episodes for Season One. It resolves the mystery of why Xander came to Wormwood, while opening up many new mysteries.
We've got 9 seasons of Season Two (subtitled "Crossroads") online, and we have expanded the mythos into a wild mosaic, spotlighting various new and old characters.
There are also a few supplemental bits here and there, like our behind-the-scenes shows, Wormwood: Post-mortem and Wormwood: Interrupted.
Check it out if you haven't already!
