Hey TRS, I learned of TRS though Diggnation and have been enjoying your show for the past couple days. I've subscribed to TRS on iTunes and downloaded 4 or so previous episodes. Already I have a request. I almost love movies, two particular movies have been released and I'm quite excited for them.

Into The Wild
Control

I've been reading Into The Wild for the past week, throughly enjoying each chapter. It is because of my like for the book that I think I'm going to dislike it. Everyone love the book so much more and I'm probably no different.

Control is the story of Joy Division front man Ian Curtis. I love Joy Division and New Order as do many of my friends. I'm going to see this movie because of my attachment to those bands. Now I don't know if your fans of this music, I'm hoping you're not. I'd especially like to hear your thoughts on this film as I'm to much a fan to hate anything related to the bands.

I'd like to thank you in advance for considering my suggestions.
Thank you,
Roman

Hi Roman,

Glad you found the show! None of us have seen Into the Wild yet, but I am VERY anxious to. Definitely my type of film.

Dan and I saw Control while we were in London. Our general consensus was that it is GORGEOUS but problematic. The performances are quite good, and it is a haunting and beautiful meditation on sadness and pain, but it ultimately doesn't add up to much. It is hard to take anything away from it, since it is simply a downward spiral of depression. Worth seeing, though, just for the amazing B&W photography.

Into the Wild is one of the only movie I can recall that has truly lived up to the book (imo). I loved the book (I'm a huge Jon Krakauer fan), have read it several times over and was really looking foreward to the movie. The cinematography is amazing. It's beautiful shot after beautiful shot. Eddie Vedder did the soundtrack which, I felt, went perfectly in this film. Plus... I love Emille Hirsch... so that probably helped too

So far I am having strong feelings for the book which may blossom into love.
I'm about to finish the book. The plan is to be done by Sunday then go straight to the theater with my girlfriend who hasn't read the book, but will after seeing the movie. My girlfriend and I are having a little experiment to see which is a better experience: reading the book then seeing this movie, or seeing the movie then reading the book.

Science is fun.

Usually, for me, reading the book first ruins the movie. It's imposible to fit everything from a book into 2 hours (the example that comes to mind first is The Green Mile by Stephen King. The books were awesome, but having read them, I found the movie to be completely intolerable. All my friends who hadn't read the books absolutely loved the movie.)
Luckily, Into The Wild does a gread job at staying true to the book. (It probably helps that the book isn't very long and isn't full of narritaves.)

I just watched "Control" and decided to write a mini review on it right after. I then found this thread and thought I might aswell just share my feelings here...

I just saw "Control" (2007). My knowledge of "Joy Division" stretches about as far as knowing the song "Love will tear us apart" and that their lead singer, Ian Curtis, hung himself in 1980.

The movie is about just that; the rise and downfall of Ian Curtis. I didn't think I would be, but I was really, really moved by this film. There's something special about the biographic films. I think that's what hot directors and writers do best nowadays, to be honest.

The movie is presented in black & white all throughout and at first I wondered why, to be honest, but after a while it just fit in really well with the overall feeling of it all.

Sam Riley, who plays Mr. Curtis, does a real impressing job and is almost flawlessly backed up by Samantha Morton who plays his wife, Deborah. Apparently the source material is in part the book "Touching from a distance" by Deborah Curtis, so I expect a certain degree of truth can be assumed to exist in the story.

Like I said earlier, the movie is really moving, and I actually let a few tears fall when it was over. Don't let this fool you, though; it's sporadically very funny. The wise-ass comments the band members deliver are very well written and serve well to establish a contrast with the more melancholic moments in the movie.

All in all I can say this movie brought me back from the idea that there haven't been a great movie made in a good while.
