It's funny. I remember reading Phonogram and thinking that I liked it and cared about the characters despite the fact that couldn't truly relate to their "scene". I was unfamiliar with most of the references in the book. I was cogniscent of the fact that I was "other" but was able to get around it.

With Suburban Glamour, it's similar but different in an important way. I can't relate to Astrid or Dave's music or clothing choices, but in the end I don't care about that. I care about the people themselves and I can TOTALLY relate to Astrid. So yes, SubGlam has made it possible for this 28 year old American married father of 2 to relate to an 18-ish British girl. This is in itself an accomplishment. The fact that the story and art are awesome seem to be icing on a very tasty cake.

(small note: I'm not trying to disparage Phonogram. I liked it a lot. I'm just saying that I'm more able to get past my differences with the characters in SG and find things to relate to in them.)

Dear Mr. Vernon,

We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. But we think you're crazy to make an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us... In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain... ...and an athlete... ...and a basket case... ...a princess... ...and a criminal... Does that answer your question?

Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.

Actually, I was just bragging that I could put lipstick on with my boobs, but that's a good message too.

But really. I'm kind of trying to figure out what we're talking about here. It seems like you both understand what Josh is saying, but then go on about it anyway. Some people simply aren't interested in a story about teenagers. Wally and I both have already mentioned that we are still interested in the story even still! That must reflect well on it... Sometimes there's just topics, characters or places that don't appeal to certain people and it doesn't translate to saying it's written badly.

We're only chatting about the book. It's not always a debate. Just coming at things from different angles and assessing our thoughts on things.*

*Or at least that's my position. I'm not too big on trying to sway people one way or the other. But I do like to hear their arguments, for, against or sideways.

Okay so I'm dragging this thread up again only because I have got to say this

In issue one of SubGlam I was a bit turned off by the coloring of it, very bright and it kind of hurt the eyes a bit. I don't know if anyone else had the same problem with it or not. Now that I have read Issue two, I have to say that something happend and now the colors are just a tad diffrent, almost not noticable and it made a world of diffrents, issue two hit a home run and quite frankly I'm giddy as a school girl for issue 3 to come out!

paper
12-14-2007, 11:55 AM
Didn't have that problem, but there was a different colorist on issue 2. So that explains the change.

labor_days
12-14-2007, 04:19 PM
Guy Majors colors in issue #1 were terrifc. McKelvie already said he had an idea of what the book should look like. So the change in colorists doesn't seem to have hurt that sense of design w/r/t the book's palette.

valoharth
12-15-2007, 03:34 AM
Yea IDK maybe the first issue was just such a shock because I'm not use to a book with a color pallet like SubGlam and I just knew what to suspect from SubGlam #2 so it seemed more natural. However it happend all I know is Im on the bandwagon drinking the Kool-aid. Just ordered Phonography off of Amazon because I'm just in love with McKelvie's art now.

The town is loosely based on the place where I grew up, so I took a bunch (like, hundreds) of reference photos there earlier in the year to use for the comic.

Many thanks to Fred for making me a SubGlam fan. Books like this should be recommended to friends.

Speaking of Three, I really like the number magic at work in SubGlam - two guys, one girl, then the shopkeeper, and/or the guy that likes Astrid that her friends don't like. Three Fae sisters, then Oberon. Three and Four. And who is the Fae spy among the "ordinary people" ? - oh, never mind, just idle speculation on my part. The names of the Fae folk are good - I appreciate the careful research on the folklore side, reflected in the Faerie names. Gives a nice depth to the story. And the fact that the "ordinary" world and the Faerie world are what they are 100%, distinct and different from each other, but still overlapping in a seamless manner in the story (except with Astrid caught in the middle, poor girl) is all good. I feel the Buffy influence, but not in the least derivative. Nice stuff.

Nice clean line, wonderful colors. Nice book, highly recommended.

jamie-mckelvie
01-23-2008, 10:03 PM
esophagus - Yeah, it's different. But fun too! :)

DrWally - Glad you've got into it! I'm enjoying playing with the folklore. Making the three faerie queens sisters was too much fun to pass up, and opened up the whole story once I'd put that in place. I wouldn't try to deny the BtVS influence - I was always a fan of the show (well, maybe not the later seasons, but...) and there was a definite thought in the back of my mind to do a kind of British version.

In the wake of Messiah CompleX, there are no X-Men. But where does that leave the mutants that WERE X-Men? Some of the industry’s hottest creators bring you stories of your favorite mutants. Matt Fraction (PUNISHER: WAR JOURNAL, IRON FIST) and Jamie McKelvie (Suburban Glamour, Phonogram) tell a story about Nightcrawler.

Nightcrawler! What a great fit, I can see our friend Ron Richards losing it right now. Should be great.

Jaime, I was wondering what your workspace looks like, where you write and draw, etc. Really just a bit about your process, how are you inspired? how do you break a writer's block? What kind of schedule do you keep? Do you take scheduled breaks or just work until you can't stop?

These kinds of questions really intrigue me, the writing process is really interesting and since you're on here every once and a while I thought we could maybe get the scoop on how you make these books.

The panel where Astrid is climbing the stairs after she fights with her mother KILLED me. It was perfect; beautiful and expressive at the same time. Fucking brilliant!

This month's issue was so fantastic. The art is just soooooo beautiful and the colors were so magical. The scene where Astrid is sitting and staring out among the city/town is so beautiful and the double birds seal that scene as one of my favorites in a long time.

I'm actually digging this story, and I'm loving that all I can think is, will David and Astrid make-up? It takes a special combination to make me think that kind of thing. I'm curious to see how this will wrap-up in just one more issue, but regardless this has been a homerun with me all the way.

Ron loves having mixtapes to read his comics along to. So do I. But I *hate* Chan's version of "Ny, Ny".

Everything looks aces, Jamie. I'll be hard at work making new forum sigs and avatars as of tonight.

Bleh! It's like Chan doing a parody of a typically downbeat Chan song. But I feel the same way about any number of the songs off Jukebox. Though I am keen on "Lost to Someone".

Hope you don't mind me taking the ole' photoshop to your gorgeous artwork either. I pimp for SubGlam on every forum I visit. So, I figure it's all good. ;)

b) Do I need a ticket? I just got some bizarre email from the nycc saying that they would have signing tickets available at the back of the convention center or some crazy nonsense.

b) I think that's just for like the proper famous people signing at the signing area, rather than throughout the con.
