View Full Version : Canadian Dollar stronger than US Dollar

For CDN $1 Americans need to pay USD $1.07.
As a Canadian, I wonder: What is going on with the US economy?
There was a total collapse of sub-mortgage sector. It seems that stocks are still shooting high only because of high oil prices (TSX and DOW JONES seem to go hand in hand with performance).
Loonie ends above US$1.07 after jobs data:

pursuit of glory [/sarcasm] in a war to spread democracy (like we have one to spread) is not cheap thrills for the majority of americans
unless you work for google (or the like) most americans are 'treading water'
somehow as a professional student i had more discretionary income than i do now
fortunately for me i met someone years ago who saw what was coming and told me to 'embrace simplicity before you are forced to do so'
if my values were materialistic i would undoubtedly be very unhappy

I read something yesterday that mentioned that this is the worst value the USD has had against the CAD since the civil war, and the AUD is catching up fast as well.
The only thing that is keeping the USD alive at the moment is the fact that the Saudis peg their currency against the USD. Each time the fed make s move on interest rates, the Saudis do the same. There was a story on NPR yesterday about he consequences of having oil prices quoted in Euros instead of USD ... and it wasn't pretty.
Nice going Mr Bush - what next? The USD and the Peso aligning??

According to Suze Orman Show, 51% of Americans earn less than $18,000 per year. The U.S. Government should pay attention at improving economic situation of its citizens, instead of wasting money on Israel and Iraq.

Interesting enough, the stocks are still high, even though sub-mortgage sector collapse wiped over a trillion dollars in the U.S.A.
High oil prices keep stock market high, and let's not forget - stock market has been yielding huge profits for 5 straight years! It's time for stock market to go down...
Personally, I am not investing 1 cent of my money until stock has a losing year. Everything is so high now, I am waiting for market to drop down. There is no point in investing when stocks are at record high prices.

on miami beach a newly constructed apatment starts at 3/4 of a million dollars
that is for the least desirable apartments = lower floors no view
to rent a nice studio or one bedroom is $1000 a month to start
in order to live off your investements you would need a million dollars at a reasonable rate of return 5%
this would give you $50,000 a year minus taxes
and that covers just one person not a family

The *average* rate of return on the stock market is about 10%. I would like to see that data of 51% of Americans living on less than 18k per year.
It seems like every year, every election cycle people start worrying about the economy and the media plays up on it big time.
As far as prices of rent goes....Miami beach is going to be expensive, who would have thought? Prices in Scottsdale, AZ for rent are at LEAST 1k for a one bedroom, 700ish Sq. Ft. apartment. Certain places are more expensive to live....go to the Midwest where you can buy a 2500 sq ft house for 150k, you're certainly not obligated or deserving to live anywhere you choose and pay cheap prices.
Maybe I'm just not getting it...but why should I necessarily be outraged and scared that the USD has taken a hit? It's only one small piece of the bigger picture as far as prosperity and economy goes.

When I was little, I used to see that the Canadian prices on all my comics and video games was higher than here in 'Merica.....and wow, that means that is no longer the case. I feel weird.

no one in their right mind would put all of their investment portfolio in stocks due to their volatility
part of your portfolio would be in secure less return investments
since i have no children the economy is not as threatening to me
and since i am a songwriter i am not limited as to how much money i can potentially make though i am also not ensured of making anything
and thru royalties i am essentially my own stock
i am already invested into the future for my lifetime plus 70 years

No, you invest in a diversified portfolio. A little here, a little there. Average rate of return on any decent investment is between 8-11%....if you're getting 5% it's time to talk to an investment professional.

I feel weird. No - they still charge you CAD$5.99 + tax for something that costs US$4.99 (I am looking at the copy of last months Wired that I bought at Toronto airport 2 weeks ago) ... despite the exchange rate being more favourable.

I gotta make me some buiscuits and gravy. But, it's damn hard to find pork sausage that's fatty enough north of a Mason-Dixon line. We visited Virgina this summer and they has the most delcious fresh pork sausage in the grocery store. Here in New York, all they got is stuff in the back of the freezer case and Jimmy Dean. That Jimmy Dean sausage is way to lean for Biscuits and Gravy.
Damn, I'm gettin hungry...

Damn, I'm gettin hungry...You could always start it off by buying the fattiest bacon yo find in the supermarket, and frying that off first, then browning the Jimmy Dean in the bacon fat. It works pretty well ... then just do the bechemel like you normally would.
I make a killer (heart attack waiting to happen) gravy, but my biscuits suck :)

(off topic police have been notified)
The trick is not to over mix them.
2 cups AP flour
1/3 cup crisco
2/3 cup milk
1 Tablespoon salt
4 Tablespoon baking power
Mix together just intil it makes a lose dough, turn out on a flat surface. Ball the dough and roll it out to 3/4 inch. Cut in biscuits and place in a greased cake pan. Bake at 400 for 12 minutes.
P.S. Bacon is a little too smokey for mr to use for saw-mill gravy. Maybe there is an alternative in italian cooking.

whatever :)
i would do better to have a talk with emi (largest music publishers)
the bottom can drop out of the stock market just as it has the housing market - my family is in real estate based in northern california and owning thoughout the sunbelt
other than real estate my father's bypass trust includes various mutual funds
i tried to get them to invest a portion of my share in google's ipo
i would be 8+ times richer today
and with the google phone most likely soon it would be 10 times
but they were riding high on real property and did not and do not understand the value of intellectual property
actually i predict that emi group's stock will skyrocket when they finally release the beatles recordings digitally which should be soon

There is a difference between Real Estate and the Market in that most everyone on the planet knew there was going to be a correction except desperate people trying to get a hold of houses that were out of their price range and coupled with shady lenders doing anything they can to make a buck. I mean, how could people think they could get a house with no money down and no job and their adjustable rate mortgage would stay low? Some people's kids.
The stock market on the other hand has an average gain of ~10% throughout history.

Wait....so their dollar is now worth more, but they still charge more? Thats like an extra burn. How do you Canadians keep up such a sunny disposition, eh?
