It "whacked" it's competition at the box office this weekend, anybody go check it out? I'm gonna make a controversial statement and say this movie is so great it shows how cheesy and overrated "Scarface" is. Tony Montana is good enough to maybe hold Frank Lucas' jock. Oh and can Denzel do any wrong? I mean even when the movies aren't that good (Deja Vu) he is still at 110%. Easily one of my top 3 favorite actors. Russell Crowe is awesome too. It's kinda long but it is extremely fascinating and you are never bored. Easily one of the best movies I've seen in a while.

It is a very excellent movie, extremely well made, amazing acting.

The reviews I've read of it though have critisized it a bit, and I can see where they're coming from. Basically the argument is that it doesn't know what kind of message it wants to send. Is it about a man's rise to power and his fall, is it about corruption, is it a cop vs bad guy movie...

So when you try to figure that kinda stuff out, it gets confusing. But it's still an extremely enjoyable ride.

So a movie is only as great as it's protagonist is powerful? How does this hold up for you?

I'm just saying that in cinematic terms American Gangster is a much better movie than Scarface, which I personally feel is overrated by many people. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe both give oscar worthy performances. In "character terms", yeah, I think Frank Lucas could kick Tony Montana's ass.

Whilst I would agree that Scarface is overrated, I think it is better than this film. I'm a big Ridley Scott fan and was let down by this film. It didn't draw me into the world like I expected. I thought Crowe was great but I'm not sure Denzel Washington added anything new to the archetype. I also found that at the end, I really didn't care too much about either of the two main characters ( I don't want to say too much for fear of spoilers).
I guess I thought it was an okay movie, but have seen much better movies on the theme (goodfellas, casino, the godfather 1 & 2).
