Actually, I jumped into the single player mode so fast that I hadn't even checked. I'll have to check now.

They did a real good job with this one. I played the beta when it was out and it was really good. Got it on preorder, but haven't picked it up yet. If you like FPS you'll like this. The online multiplayer is a blast too.

This is definitely the next game I'm going to pick up...I only played the PC demo which was pretty welll done IMHO. Sorta disappointed that the SP campaign is so short, but I guess it will be good, considering I rarely finish games, especially FPSs. For me, the multiplayer is the most important factor with FPSs. JW, does anyone know if the 360 and PC players can play together similar to what ShadowRun does? Or is it PC only and 360 only? My friend doesn't have a PC good enough to run it, but I'd rather play on my PC. I'll buy the 360 though if I have to.

<3 I love the CoD series, except 3 since it never came to the PC. Could've done the Circuit City deal and get CoD3 for free with 4, but oh well.
This is an awesome game. I want to play it more but gotta get going to school. :(

Loved the beta... Loving the actual game even more. I applaud Infinity Ward for not putting achievements in multiplayer. They deserve to be in the single player since the multi player has bootcamp, upgrades to weapons, etc etc.
Add me if you want to play a bit. My gamertag is the same as the username here

great sound, great graphics, great gameplay, great everything.
The only thing that bugs me is that theres no split screen online. Why would you exclude that infinity ward?!?
But still the game is amazing and you should go pick it up.

Im a huge Half Life fanboy and consider it the best game series all around.
But as of today, CoD4 is the best single player game I have ever played.
Its unbelievable how perfectly they nailed the modern combat on the first try. Right off the bat they let you know that this game is going to be hard core (shooting people in their sleep??)
The action is none stop and intense. The storyline is actually fantastic and in certain scenes it will blow you away and in others (1 in particular) make you want to cry.
The whole game plays out like a Tom Clancy movie. The score for it sounds like it came straight out of Hollywood.
Im not yet finished with the single player, but Im calling it the best fps single player I've played yet.
There are some unrealistic parts like enemies getting completely shot up, but somehow are still alive and returning fire (but then again, thats what happens to me.) In one scene I just ran through a large attacking force instead of engaging them and I was nearly untouched.
All this and I havent even touched the multiplayer
Overall if you like FPS games and the modern warfare genre, this is an absolute must have.

I liked how the TRS guys pointed out that while once MEDAL OF HONOUR was the premiere WW2 fps, CALL OF DUTY has since far surpassed it.
No bwetter evidence of that than the piss-poor AI in MOH: AIRBOURNE.

That is ridiculous I guarantee you will be playing it longer than that. The single player campaign alone is EPIC. And with the reward system on multi player and the "Barracks" that give you little sub achievements is really cool and detailed. If you really like FPS games you will play this MUCH longer than a week. I honestly have to say this is the greatest FPS to ever come out, and anybody who wants to top it will REALLY have to go some. I would even go so far as to say that there is no doubt in my mind that this is the greatest game I have ever played. Hell, when I bought my copy of it I played the first 10 hours non stop and beat the single player campaign. I then took it to a friend's house, who NEVER buys video games only rents, and gave it to him. I then went out and bout the Collector's Edition. I love it so much I bought it twice I know I can't say that about any other game.

This game is so badass... just got it a few days ago and already pumped over 6 hours into it... it's so addicting.
Tons of gameplay modes... sweet upgrades (being able to whip your pistol out before you die is one of the most awesome things in FPS history) and just overall awesome.
The knifing in this game is probably my favorite... it's feels so much more responsive than most games... and stabbing people somehow brings a smile to my face.
Few downsides... No real clan setup? Weak. No co-op is a letdown, but it still doesn't matter.
Get this game.

I beat it last night and WOW, what an ending! Also, to all you players out there, be sure to let the credits roll at the end for a pretty awesome extra level, it seems to relate to VERY modern times. :D
A FPS without co-op single player just feels dirty now, and theres no vehicals.
With that said, this game is AMAZING. Just look at your xbox live buddy lists, that should be an great indicator, lol.

got the game weds at walmart just as they were putting on the shelves... 2 days late mind you but oh well. I got it for the ps3 and I love it, with the exception of when someone is standing with lighting behind them... It's a minor thing but it bothers the hell out of me, just looks so wrong. Other then that I am overjoyed with how well it plays and looks on the ps3. After playing the game for two days I realize home much I suck at games like this... Anyone out there have the ps3 version? If so add me Clayphd
This is really messed up...

Infinity Ward DOES NOT have servers that record your rank, players online ranks are kept on their own boxes or pcs. This is pretty weird for them to do...

I played the PC demo. Looks good and feels CoDy, but it's like I've played it before. Acover system and online co-op would have been good additions. Halo3 is filling my multiplayer FPS fine so far.
How is CoD4's matchmaking? Can you form parties? What about Team Fortress 2's matchmaking?

i just rented this casue i wasn't sure if it was a buy for me. I have not played any other COD games. I gotta say once i put this game in I was like. HOLY ****ING SHIT THIS IS AWESOME. Enemy's coming you from all directions and its mass ****ing chaos.
The only complaint i have is that it seems like it would be ****ing impossible to play well on a NON-HD setup. The enemys are kinda hard to see at first. I killed alot of friendlies in the beginning. Im starting to get the hang of it now.
I rented it for a week so i will probably breeze thru the single player fairly quickly. If the multiplayer is just as good i will probably end up owning it.

Actually it's not bad on an SDTV. I have played it on both HD and SD and I did fine on both. As a matter of fact I do better on multiplayer on my smaller SDTV for some reason.

Breathtaking game.
I haven't had a chance to check out the MP properly yet but everything about it is just so awesome.
The plot, the camera angles, and way its written.
You know its going to be good when the game starts out with you being a guy thats shot in the head.

I've got the PS3 version sitting at home unopened from gamefly. I don't usually like shooters on consoles, but figure I'll give it a shot. I've actually been eyeing the Warchest on Steam, too, so I'm looking forward to throwing it in when I get home. (If I like it enough, I'll buy it for the PC.)

Sorry for reviving a 2-month dead thread, but I just got CoD4 a few days ago and I just beat the campaign, so I wanted to post my thoughts. I'm actually going to deviate from the norm here by saying this:
Simply average. C-
Yeah, I know the game throws you into some incredible situations. I know the graphics are awesome and the gameplay is smooth as silk. But, having played the other CoD's, one of the major problems with this game is this: it's exactly the same game as CoD 1-3, but with nicer graphics and different weapons.
Seriously, the gameplay mechanics are identical. The premise of the game is also identical: fight off wave after wave of bad guys and hope that you live. Except CoD4 is worse in terms of impossibility than the previous ones have been. Most of the levels have you facing impossibly large numbers of enemies, and so naturally you die. A lot. (Note: I'm playing on Hardened skill level on a console, which makes things quite a bit tougher - anything less is just too easy for me). But to make things worse, I think about three times in the game you have to race against a clock. And the clock almost never gives you sufficient time to complete the mission. Or a few times you'll be left in the dust trying to hold your position against hundreds of enemies while a rescue chopper takes its sweet time to come and get you. Where's the variation? That's seriously all you do in the entire game, except for three missions: the first one, the sniper one (before the part where you escape after taking out the bald guy), and the one in the plane and the infra-red. Those three missions were freaking awesome, and I have to say they're my favorite missions that I have played in any game for a very long time.
The rest of the game, though, was 100% frustration and completely unsatisfying. When you die 50 times just attempting to survive for three minutes, or to run 50 meters to a checkpoint, that's not a challenge. All that is is the developers throwing an unlimited (yes, unlimited) number of enemies after you because they didn't want to put out the effort of adding some creativity to the game.
Let's talk realism. CoD4, like all the others CoD's, is supposed to make you feel like you're "really there." But let's face it: in real life, if you're facing 300 baddies in a firefight and you have zero cover, you are not going to survive. Period. If you have three minutes to dash 200 meters through several hundred enemies all shooting at you at the same time, you will not make it alive. Period. This game is so unrealistic it's ridiculous. Hell, you can't even make it through alive in the video game, where you can survive several times the hits before dying than you would be able to in reality, and where all you do if things get hectic is wait for the screen to stop flashing red, unlike real life where if you get injured really badly, you're pretty much done unless you're lucky. Sorry, but I wasn't feeling it. All I was feeling in this game was frustration and a strong desire to never play single player again. Single player sucked big time for me. It's one of the worst single player campaigns I've played in a long time, despite those three rock-solid missions I mentioned before.
Multiplayer is fun, though. But again, if you've played CoD 1-3 online, well, don't expect much of anything new here. It's the same freaking thing, but different weapons. The only "revolutionary" thing added to multiplayer that I can see is the ranking system. I like how you work your way up the ranks and unlock weapons. That's cool. And the multiplayer is a genuinely fun experience. It almost makes the game worth the money for me. But the one major issue I have with multiplayer is that if you're starting off at level one, it pits you up against level 50s, whose weapons are ten times better than yours. That's simply unfair, and it's going to make multiplayer a struggle until you get to a high level. It also seems completely backwards, logically. They really should have put you up against people of equal skill level so that the games are more fair for everybody. It's not like they would have trouble doing that; every time I check online there's 50,000 to 85,000 people playing, and that's just on the 360.
In short, the game has three awesome missions and a rock-solid multiplayer. But everything else about the game is, to me, lousy. Repetition, impossible odds against you, unrealism, no true change from any of the previous games, and in general pure frustration. And don't even get me started on the dogs, which you can only kill 10% of the time even if you melee them exactly when it tells you.
Too bad. I was really hoping for something more.

Your wrong.
first of all when you start off a "review" with "I just got CoD4 a few days ago" you should stop there and think to yourself "Self, should I talk about something I only have about 8 hours of reference"........answer is no, BTW
#2 "it's exactly the same game as CoD 1-3"..wow...your right...they should call it COD4...o wait...they did...because people like it,the same way all the mario, sonic, mega man...etc games....its so you know what your getting into....as well there are totally different mission types and situations then any of the other CoD's...if you didn't like the repetition of the older CoD's,why did you buy this?..its like saying.."Unreal Tournament has been the same game forever"....DUH
C:"When you die 50 times just attempting to survive for three minutes, or to run 50 meters to a checkpoint, that's not a challenge. All that is is the developers throwing an unlimited (yes, unlimited) number of enemies after you because they didn't want to put out the effort of adding some creativity to the game"........you said earlier you as well ....." if you're facing 300 baddies in a firefight and you have zero cover"...and this "which you can only kill 10% of the time even if you melee them exactly when it tells you."
...this just makes you sound jaded because you sucked at it..there isn't a moment in the game where your without cover..i was never killed by the dogs...never...I took my time with the campaign and got all the way up to the chopper stage without dieing, though it took me a while, and i was awarded achievements for it...sounds like your trying to play this like it was Unreal Tournament .....and for unlimited enemies?????WTF are you talking about..there the same amount of guys every time..they act different time to time, but theres the same amount.
As for online mismatch you speak of, all level represents is amount weapons,perks,etc.. you have....not your skill level..Sound like you didn't bother looking into the barracks section to see the real rankings and stats....when you get to 55 you hit prestige and loose all that anyway and start over..its more or less a goal system..not skill based ranking...PLUS I'm at my first 55( mind you I play about 2 hours 3 times a week) within my first month only using the M16 (the first gun you have) with red dot pretty much 95% of the time...and taken out 10th level prestige players...how you ask...I'm an old CoD player and know that if I learn the maps well and know all the good shooting angles ill be on top
no game is perfect,But I think your way off base here..no disrespect meant here btw...

I completely agree on the multiplayer front. It's always been my complaint since I started, that the "match making" system is broken. Correct about the shitty guns they provide you with to start, too. I still play though, just because no one else plays UT3.

That's not entirely true...there were a number of places I tried taking all of them out before going to the Checkpoint, and I never found and end. OK, so it's theoretically possible they had a large set number total, but it would have to be after wave upon wave upon wave, etc.
As far as the other guy talking about it's the same gameokay as 1-3, good...I never played those since I don't care to play WWII games, which is why I keep deciding not to get the Warchest every time I consider it.

It's my opinion. It's not "wrong." It's just how I feel about the game. I may have had CoD4 for just a few days, but I did in fact beat the entire game and I have spent enough time playing on multiplayer (including playing the other CoD's both single player and multiplayer) to know what I'm talking about.
If you don't agree with me, that's fine, but don't get all up in arms about it just because I don't agree with you. I'm sorry that I prefer better, more original games. But hey, that's just my opinion, and I'm entitled to it.

*yawwwwwwwn* Oh well I'm sure somewhere in there you said CoD4 is the best game ever.

Mind you I haven't played in like 2 weeks since Burnout Paradise but.......
I've hit the first prestige and I'm back up to level 25.

I usually don't like any first-person games on consoles with dual analog sticks.. But I just picked up a PS3 and COD4 last night, and it's actually great! Previously I was the definition of Wii Fanboy (aside perhaps from my disdain for Smash Bros Brawl and all things Pokemon), but it's funny what getting an HD TV will do to a guy...
I still prefer the FPS controls that the Wii has to offer, but surprisingly, COD4 is playable on my PS3... I'm happy with it. I think it's better than Mario Galaxy, but I can understand why Galaxy got the GOTY nod from many places, since it appeals to a wider variety of gamers, whereas FPS games are a little more hostile to people like, for example, my mom.

I'm pretty sure you can use a mouse and keyboard for most FPS games on the PS3.

I've been a large Call of Duty fan ever since COD 1 hit the PC (rifles only baby!).
I'm def buying this game as soon as I get enough money saved up.

I haven't heard of that... I thought the only one was UT3, and that's why people made such a big deal about it... I have a keyboard plugged in right now and it doesn't work with my COD4 or any of the game demos that I downloaded. But I don't have a mouse connected.
I'm gonna look for a SplitFish FragFX anyhow, it looks sweet.
(Regardless, I still prefer IR over mouse for aiming)

I was definitely thinking of using TRS as my clan.
Also, it's been pointed out that I'm at an extreme disadvantage because I have a small non-HD TV. It seemed like everyone else online could spot and kill me from so far away. But then I was informed that on a big HD TV what looks really small to me, is an easy target. Arg.
But we should get a clan going. I'm tired of signing on and either be in a completely quiet game or a game full of assholes pointing out how bad I am. Give a brother some time to get some skills! I think the funniest comment made was "Who the hell uses a shotgun!" This Guy. Can't go wrong with some video game shotgunnin'

Screw that man. I would much rather have a PC than a 360 because PCs are simply a superior gaming platform. Mouse + keyboard can't be beat. Unfortunately, though, my budget only afforded me a 360, which is why I own one.
All you need to do is hop on people's Vent or TS servers and chat it up with them while you play. Lots of servers host public voice servers as well. If they don't, ask them if they have one and if you can join in. It's really no different than VoIP over the 360 so there's nothing to worry about there. Just become a regular somewhere and you'll become a lot less lonely while playing. And join a good clan while you're at it. One that has its focus on fun instead of on winning. Those clans are always a blast, you'll love it. And you'll meet a lot of cool people not only in that clan but in others as well, which to me ends up being far more social than the 360, which kind of just throws you in with any random people it can find.

Man, I'm craving this game sooo bad.
I played it on ps3 from launch. Ran all the way through the rankings twice, and then my roommate sold the game about a month and a half ago. It was so much fun. I used to have all kinds of connection problems with the pos3, im sure the online experience is way better on Live, I like the 360 controller way better too. I think I'm gonna pick it up after work today for 360 and start again.
I'll throw TRS on my clan tag
my gamer tag is the same as my loggin here

I own the game for both PS3 and Xbox and I have bad connection problems on both of them. When the game came out the PS3 servers had major issues but those have been fixed.
I'm rank 54 on Xbox and I can't get into a freaking match anymore! I've been trying for days! And Rez HD demo tookl like...4 hours to download. I have a campus internet connection, so it's not slow....freaking Live.

thats weird. From what I hear COD4 is the most popular game on live. I play halo 3 and can get matches in less than a minute in most game types. I would think COD4 would be even better.
My problems with the PS3 were just after the game shipped, it was just laggy as hell at random times.

Actually at its peak Halo 3 is still at around 250,000 people (according to what it tells me anyways). The most I've seen on CoD 4 is 80,000 at its peak. Either way, it's such a huge number of people that it's pretty much inconsequential in terms of how long it takes to find a match and at what hours you play.

So, I did it. I bought in on 360 and in less than 48 hours, probably 6 hours of online play, I ran up to lvl 29, have my blue camo for my M4, and managed to stress the hell out of my left wrist. This game is so much fun.

actually I don't know if there's somethign wrong with my NAT type or because of the ports the campus internet blocks but It's really difficult for me to get into a game.
You can tell because when the game starts there's a splash logo that says Call of Duty on it before anything comes up. It's the checking for updates screen. If you have a normal connection you'll never see that.
But When I try to get into a game. It stays stuck on the Downloading Game Settings screen.
My trick to get this working is to go to start a split screen game. start one real quick. The game will freeze about 1/4 of the way through the loading bar for about 1 minute. I just hit the PS button over and over again and it will eventually continue and I can start a split screen game. I contacted activision and they said that starting and offline split screen game still has something to do with their servers. If I unplug my internet, the game loads just fine.
Anyway after I do this loading of a split screen game I quit it and then I go back to play online. Most of the time It works and I can get to finding a game. However the gametypes screen also ends up getting stuck in the Downloading Game Settings screen, this is where I repeat the process. And I can actually get into agame after this whole process. It works better when I'm connected directly to a wall and not through my router.
it's a pain in the ass. Too bad because it looks better on my TV on PS3.

I'd guess it's an issue with your campus network. I had all kinds of trouble back when I was in the dorms, an that was on PC. I'm sure there are a whole new set of issues with consoles on campus networks. I'd contact your network admins.
