This week in Movies:
Alex, Dan and Jeff examine the Ridley Scott directed biopic, American Gangster, starring Denzel Washingtion and Russell Crowe, and ask whether it belongs in the pantheon of great American gangster films like Heat, Scarface, and Goodfellas.
The guys check out the trailer for Wanted, starring Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie, based on the Image comic from Mark Millar and J.G. Jones.
This week in Video Games:
The rhythm game war of 2007 begins with the release of Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock. Alex, Dan, and Jeff take the stage to discuss both the game and the fancy new wireless guitar.
Crytech's new shooter, Crysis, has achieved near photorealism. But what if you don't have an $8,000 PC on which to run it?
Sony's innovative new PS3 title, Eye of Judgment, aims to take table-top collectible card games to the next level. The guys set it up and take it for a spin.

I have to give a pat on the back to Steve for his extra efforts. Loving the upgrades all around like the bottom 1/3rd graphics and the informational overlays on the video content. I usually have to rely on Dan for that info.
Great episode! When will we have a live TRS.

Wow, team. Way to step it up this week! I don't usually skip around but I still dig the concept of the new player. Was that you guys or rev3 that set that up?
Nice new graphics too!
Things just felt fancy all around.

Awesome episode. I had a feeling Crysis would be all pretty but it doesn't seem as bad as I thought it would be. Still not getting it. Keep up the good work.
Also, I was wondering how long it would take until a Pulp Fiction spoof. Longer then I would have liked but still awesome.

Wonderful ep. Anakin was worried Alex was sick because his hair was flat, so thank you Alex for explaining that.
And I found it to be very funny that Dan was thinking of ways for Alex to trick his nephew with the x-box 360, why am I thinking Dan learned parenting from Calvin and Hobbes.
Anakin has played most of the video games you mentioned. Sometimes for cuddle time we play either Mario Bros, or Mario 3. Learning on the old games make the new games easier for him to play. Games that are newer that are age appropriate for little ones suck.
And as for parenting advice, you are doing fantastic. You will make wonderful dads.

The opening was perfect. I couldn't guess the movie until the pasta flew.
Also, Mr. Tumnus was a fawn. It's a standard mythological beast. Alex should really bone up on his classic fantasy.
MY son is also named Xander and it's short for Alexander. We named him after Xander Harris.

Good Ep, Excellent opening!
I pretty much agree with your American Gangster thoughts. It's certainly a very good movie, and one people should go and see this season, but I'm not sure it has enough to elevate it with the classics. And when I say classics Scarface is not one of them.
I will give Ridley Scott credit for the production value, or as Dam mentioned- the details. The movie feels so authentic it's like watching a film a few decades old. Not in a scratched film Grindhouse way, but very naturally and organic. My sister worked on the film, but they didn't get her name in the credits, bastards.
As far as the Wanted trailer: It left me very 'meh'. I am a fan of the comic, and thinking of that story without the super villain aspect, and the idea that they "won", quickly becomes a very generic tale. Timur Bekmambetov definitely has a visual flare, but nothing in the trailer wowed me, and while I enjoyed Night/Daywatch, there is a definite style over substance factor present. The trailer is only a teaser, so we'll see what develops
Steve- Excellent job on the new additions to the show. The credit sidebars are a fantastic idea, and the branded address bar looks great. Very professional, and a definite upgrade.

Hey great show (as always).
I'd heard about Wanted but hadn't seen anything yet, so thanks, I'll go hunt it down.
I think what we saw here looks great and would say that the 'super villain' aspect isn't something that studios would try to get into a trailer (look at the mess they made of the Stardust trailers). So stay hopeful! I'm already in just for the cast. McAvoy is a good actor and I hope this film gets him on the radar beyond Britain.
I like the new sidebars; nice design Steve!
I appreciate all the effort you guys put in, extra kudos to Dan for taking the face full of spaghetti!

This is the first episode that I started putting in the chapter markers. I am happy that they worked :) I don't know why we didn't think of that before.
Thanks to everyone for the positive feedback on the graphic enhancements (except for the explosions :( ). We're trying to make the show easier on the eyes, so I for one am glad to hear that you all are appreciating it. Especially because it take me a lot of time to do it :D

I am loving how the show looks, except for the explosions. I miss the old, sorry! The new ones are to smooth and colorless.
The movie stuff looks great though.
Wonderful episode as always and as usual you sparked a discussion between my boyfriend and I.
We talked for a while about the classic video games we would show to a child and came up with our list;
Centipede
Gallaga (If that's how it's spelled, can't remember)
Super Mario Bros
Breakout
Pac-Man
Klax
Tetris
Donkey Kong
:)
Loved the intro. Dan looks lovely with a full face of pasta, lol.
Edit: Just realized there was a new thread created for the classic games question.
Don't blame me, I have a new puppy! It's a wonder I get to watch anything at all with Little Miss Demands Attention!

Love the new graphical improvements. The informative credits are an outstanding touch. The green screen jokes and lower thirds have always been my second favorite part of the show.
My first favorite being the openings which never fail to make me rewind and watch them again they are so ****ing good.
When I saw the trailer for Wanted last week I became sexually aroused. No joke. I watched Day Watch the other night from Netflix and was so blown away that I was like OK Night Watch and Day Watch are great films I can't wait for what this guy does next. and then Dan the keeper of the knowledge of good and evil pointed out that the same guy is in fact the director of Wanted... suffice it to say I had to change my pants after hearing this.
The rest of the show was great even though I watched it without pants and while blow drying my nuts. It happens.
You guys rock... sans hyperbole.

Dude all I gotta say is-"Eye of Judgment will rape your Mom!!!!"! That is freakin LOL EPIC!!!! I think I nearly pooped my pants laughing so hard. Being a metal head that just blew me away. I'm now interested in seeing "Wanted" from your preview. I remember seeing something from the website on Dan's section about it but never click the trailer. But after seeing some of the visuals and story backround, it looks like it might be kinda cool. And c'mon, seriously fellas, when are we gonna start talking Avatar already. This is getting ridiculous! We're 7 awesome episodes in and still no talky. What gives? Anywho, spectacular show as always fellas and Steve I concur with everyone about the new graphics=RAD!

Intro: Awesome! Totally loved it.
"Eye..of..Judgement.WILL-Rape.Your.Mom!" OMG, made me LOL!
Steve: I love the new graphics. Though I think I agree with some of the others in that the explosion needs a little more fireballishness or something. The whole screen wipe with the smoke is cool, but if it started with a sweet looking explosion, it would kick! Otherwise, all the new stuff is totally sweet.
I also got kind of a tin can kind of vibe from the sound....saw that someone else mentioned it, so I thought I would note that I noticed as well. But definitely love your new graphics!
And with the kids and gaming stuff....my daughter that just turned 6 last month LOVES to play Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. She plays it several times a week. Whenever I'm playing a game she always wants to watch or sit in my lap and kind of help. In fact in the last couple of days I've kind of dove head first into Bioshock (been off work for back surgery) and she's gotten so familiar with the game just by watching me for an hour or two that it literally amazes me and totally makes me proud. I guess just that she gets so involved in something that I love, just gets me. :tear: :) Today she was saying things like, "Dad, watch out for that big daddy!" and, "Quick, use your lighting on the Splicer!" and "Hurry and use a health pack!" Just love it!
Oh and BTW, she started when she was like 4 and a half playing Oblivion all on her own as well (as in she hopped in front of the computer and knew just how to open the game and get it started and everything!) I haven't fired up my NES/SNES emulators in quite a while, I'd bet she would also absolutely love playing Super Mario and probably even Zelda. Oh she also plays this little online RPG all the time (Endless Online). That one she can play on her own computer. It's my hope that I can get her a PC capable of playing Oblivion and the likes (at least at low settings) for Christmas this year. The Celeron 600 barley plays all her movies that are on Divx on her computer, let alone anygame remotely 3D. :)
I can go on and on.....but anyway, it's definitely great that you can get your kids into games and other things you love. (Oh, BTW, she LOVES The Goonies and the Back to the Future tril., two of my favorite childhood movies that I still watch all the time.) I'll say one thing though, you do have to keep an eye on such a young child playing an online multiplayer game. Before she was able to read I didn't care, but now that she can, I make sure she only plays bot matches in Jedi Knight. I just don't want her to see the language (not to mention just playing with all the little bastards that play that game online nowadays anyway) I guess she does hear some bad words while I'm playing the audio players in Bioshock, but I don't even think she's paying attention to those anyway :)
Speaking of that:
"I shot Dan in the face"
WHOA WHOA WHAO, let's keep this PG guys....
In that intro, how many times did Alex say "Mother ****er" and you are worried about saying shot Dan in the face? ;)
(Or did I miss the sarcasm at 2:30am?)
EDIT: Oh yeah, thanks for pointing out WANTED. That looks amazing visually. Topping Nightwatch by far I'd say. Thanks and goodnight!

It was over the top Pre-Calculus!!! This will go down as one of the most Epic quotes/moments in the TRS annals. Kinda like hearing King Leonidas spit out "This is Spartaaaa!!!!", or Mortal Kombat yelling "Finish him!!!", or like Bill telling Ralph to "put on the jammies Ralph!" or when Quaids fat suit starts tweaking out to "2 Weeks,...2 weeks.."!

Great episode :) heres my list of some games for a new gamer, just a simple list
First is first:
Super Mario Bros 1 (with duckhunt!) or 3 - no explanation needed, if this doesn't make your list....
The Sims - very appealing to the casual gamer
Wii Sports - Also very casual but also very new...
Doom/Quake/Duke Nukem 3D/Blood - The original shooters that got it right (wolf is too weak)
Full Throttle/Monkey Island I, II, or III/Sam and Max Hit the Road/The Dig - Classic Lucasarts Adventures...I think everyone should try one at least once in their life. The ones I listed are the newer (mid 90s) ones compared to say Maniac Mansion.
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time still my favorite Zelda and def the first I would recommend
Super Metroid def my favorite Metroid game, still not a fan of the 3D Metroids tho
Mario Kart 64 Still my favorite Mario Kart game, easy to pick up and I have yet to meet a woman alive who refuses to play it.
Recommendations to Normal Gamers: (its too bad you cant turn back time)
Deus Ex the original on PC, still one of my favorite games of all time. Properly mixes RPG elements with FPS/Stealth/Strategy. One of the first to do this so perfectly. Play it on PC, no PS2 Conspiracy ports please
Half-Life/Half-Life 2 if you haven't played either, your missing out (halo's too slow for me and just can't compete imo)
Any Blizzard Game Doesn't matter when it was made, they're all gems in their own right. I never got into WoW tho, being addicted to Diablo II for a year was enough for me ;)
NeverWinter Nights For the big fans of D&D or RPG's in general, this is about as authentic of an RPG as you can get on a PC.
Fallout I or II Sadly most ppl have never played the originals and even sadder it seems that Bethesda is making Oblivion 2142, not Fallout 3 and turning it into an FPS/RPG hybrid... yeech I got no problems with oblivion, other than making Fallout 3 INTO oblivion...
Looking forward to:
Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway
Assassins Creed
Super Mario Galaxy
GTA4
Splinter Cell Conviction
Fable 2
Smash Bros Brawl
thats all I can think of off the top of my head

Thanks for the response Jeff! I have to admit, its pretty sweet how you guys interact with your fans!!!
I gage most RPG's today in comparison to Ultima 7. It was truly ahead of its time. Its just to bad they weren't able to capture that same feeling in Ultima 8 and 9.
Maybe I'll try my hand at a Ultima inspired background for the show...

After hearing Alex's singing during the EOJ segment I've come to a conclusion: You fellas NEED to record some songs and put them up for download on your site! We could even make funny youtube videos to go with them and bring in even more viewers. I just know that you guys singing about video games, movies and comics would be hilarious.

The technology that was around when you were born seems obvious and natural, everything invented before you're 30 is a way for you to make money, and everything invented after you're 30 is unnatural and ruining the world.
Yeah, it's a great quote (and great episode all around, of course)! Here's a fuller snip from http://www.douglasadams.com/dna/19990901-00-a.html for the sake of completeness:
I suppose earlier generations had to sit through all this huffing and puffing with the invention of television, the phone, cinema, radio, the car, the bicycle, printing, the wheel and so on, but you would think we would learn the way these things work, which is this:
1) everything that’s already in the world when you’re born is just normal;
2) anything that gets invented between then and before you turn thirty is incredibly exciting and creative and with any luck you can make a career out of it;
3) anything that gets invented after you’re thirty is against the natural order of things and the beginning of the end of civilisation as we know it until it’s been around for about ten years when it gradually turns out to be alright really.
Apply this list to movies, rock music, word processors and mobile phones to work out how old you are.

PS (to Steve)-Love the new look for the graphics, but I do have to agree that the explosions seem less organic and a little forced, if that makes any sense. I do applaud your efforts to not let the show stagnate once it gets to "good enough" like so many do. Keep innovating, guys! (And the fans will always be here to flame, er I mean, to give constructive feedback, of course.:))

If you haven't read The Salmon of Doubt by Douglas Adams, then you've been reading the wrong books for the past whateveryourage years. This is one of my favorite books, and it'll be one of yours as soon as you get off the damn computer and go buy it.

Hey all, this is Doug (ep33 question guy). I just wanted to say that yes, Xander's name is taken from Buffy but is just Xander, not Alexander. My wife and I argued about that until literally an hour before the kid was born. As it is hard to argue with a woman in labor, she won. She says didn't want to go with Alexander because she didn't want his name to become Alex. I'm sure that if she had seen TRS before Xander was born that Mr. Albrecht would've changed her opinion on the name. :P (Actually, on more than one occasion she has pointed out that TRS is a way better show than Diggnation.)
Xander and I have switched our Saturday (and Sunday :) ) morning game to Mario Kart: Double Dash. He gets to pick the characters and always wants "Mario and Zelda"---he thinks Luigi is Link, and thinks Link is Zelda. I've tried to set him straight by playing some Master Quest, but he's not really into it. I can't wait to build a MAME cabinet for us, or maybe a cocktail table, once we move into our new house where I can have a proper workbench. Two player TMNT or Simpsons is gonna rock.

12;40 end of the clip of Wanted. Frankly I find the dan and alex vomiting conversation hilarious already without steves graphic - which did make it funnier, but the funny was already there on Dan spacing out on Puck, who played a fife or panflute I think, not a harp.

Pulp Fiction being by favourite film of all time..... loved the intro. Jeff was a pretty good fill for Vinnie Barbarino :)

I'll second that.
Also, Adams' way of thinking continues to be so influential that maybe (hopefully) we will get to the point where enough people will realize the knee-jerk reaction is just that and won't panic every time something new shows up, thinking it's the end of the world (unless of course, what shows up is the Vogons)

Dude, you have no idea. My wife and I have been married 10 years now, and we played Tetris Attack maybe a few times---she is not a gamer in the slightest. My daughter (11 now) has limited interest in gaming and plays a little Animal Crossing, Nintendogs and Neopets. So, having a kid that's into games at two is totally kickass. Almost brings me back to 6th grade when my best friend Dan would come over and we'd play NES all night or when we'd play Commodore 64 at his house (Racing Destruction Set anyone?). The only trick now is how long can I wait until co-op Halo, etc. is okay with my wife.
Oh, and playing matchbox cars on the living room floor with him is another level of radness.

I just want to thank you guys for continuing to put out a great product. Every week there's interesting discussions, a great effort to include extra segments and good production values, and it's become something I look forward to each week.
I especially like the way you guys talk about video games and somehow describe the intangible things we've all experienced while playing but never really could describe, or just the things we've taken for granted. For example, it was interesting when Jeff was talking about the Wii weaning new users to games, or that email last week about having your child play games. You just talk about games in a way that gives new respect and consideration to the industry, it's just kind of refreshing.
Also you guys can be pretty funny at times.
Two things:
1. "Until next time" feels a little stale, don't you also do that on diggnation, Alex? Come on man.
2. Would you guys consider making a hoodie or t-shirt that said "Totally Rad" only?
