Watch out for SPOILERS because from here on out people are talking about the books of the week.

We've got a thread dedicated to New Avengers: Illuminati #5 located here (http://www.revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11483).

Well, I mentioned it in the Illuminati thread.

But this has to be one of the most exciting Marvel weeks in awhile, for me anyways.

I simply loved Astonishing, and Uncanny X-men. Fantastic books both. I love seeing the X-men work, and in both of these books the writers REALLY get it.

It's crazy, it's like the X-men have been in a fog lately, and then WHAMMO, Brubaker and Whedon knock it out of the park.

BOth have excellent characterization, expecially on (of all people) Cyclops, it's books like these that make you realize, OF COURSE he's the leader, noone else could do it better. Ron is going to be happy.

The obvious highlight from Astonishing is the reveal scene where the X-men have an entire mental conversation while having a forced slightly awkward conversation that happened last issue. An awesome smack yourself in the forehead kind of "of course" moment. I mean you knew there was a plan, but this....

From Uncanny, it was just great to see the X-men kicking ass for a change. It feels like it been too long. I mean they've been doing this for a while now, they SHOULD be good at taking out the baddies. It was nice to see them do it. Nightcrawler coming off especially cool, though that could be the excellent Tan art.

GRADES:

Uncanny: A+
Astonishing: A+

Seriously, I loved them.

Soooo, not a perfect week for marvel, Picked up Silver Surfer: In Thy Name

A problematic book.

First off, what's going on? Good guys? Bad guys? No idea. It's like there are 3-4 plots that just start and end, with no tension or excitement and for what? ANother Surfer as Messiah story? Yeesh.

Alien designs? Like terrible Geogia O'keefe monsters. Reminicent of the Mr Mind vag monster from the end of 52.

I miss good surfer stories.

Grade: D-

Still not enough to foul my mood. X-men and Illuminati so good!!!

Criminal #10:

Awesome.

I'll be brief on this one as most people on the board read it already. I will say you'll all be very happy. Some DAMN fine comicbooking here.

The ending is really moving, and it's not often I'm this emotionally involved with books, which gets me thinking "Why aren't more books like this". Of course that's a testament to Brubaker and Phillips' respective talents.

I also appreciated the shout out to Intelligence in the Back Matter.

Sadly no new issues till FEB, because of Marvel Zombies 2 (that better be good!!)

If you're not reading it, you really should. If you are, look forward to it.

Illuminati's reveal didn't turn out the way I thought it would. I had my eye on the chicken of the sea, there.

Did the Illuminati saga both begin and end with Iron Man sitting alone in an improbably supportive office chair? To the archives!

Wow... so apparently Ed Brubaker recently started writing an X-Men book. How about that? The stuff with the Professor in Uncanny is stuff I've been waiting to see happen for a while now; now if only someone would call out him and the X-Men for completely giving up and selling out after Civil War, we'd really be in business.

(I mean, come on. Every dystopic apocalyptic future they've ever had the chance to glimpse has had superhumans registered on a list with Sentinels enforcing it. The government now has them on a list, penned in a facility, and government Sentinels are out in the yard. Out in the front yard! Professor X? Slim? "Yeah... what are ya gonna do? Ho hum. Let's go to space." Are you kidding me??)

Superman #670

The conclusion to the 3rd Kryptonite storyline.

First off, what's up with the inking in this book? Was it done with ultra fat markers? Maybe!! But not all the way through, that would be craaaaazy. Instead we get ever decreasing line thickness. great.

Anyways, the story itself is okay, not the best of Busiek's run. THe new kryptonian's first appearance is hardly gonna set the speculator market afire.

Standard superhero fighting I suppose, just...tough to get past the terrible art.

He sure did eh?

As for the professor, he might've been the only problem I had with the book.

I agree that it was about time someone layed into him a bit, but he just seemed a little too meek. You know? He is on the Illuminati, he should probably be an imposing personality.

Still I'm soooooo reluctant to say anything negative cause I enjoyed it so much.

Just read Y. Man am I going to miss this book. And now there's only like... Thirty pages, one issue left... So sad and depressing especially after the end of last issue. I really, really enjoyed that last splash page from Vaughan. It took me a few minutes to look and understand what he was saying with that last image... I really wonder how it's gonna end... Hopefully it'll end well... Have we ever seen Vaughan end something? I mean, Dr. Strange was a miniseries and Runaways is an ongoing that leads into Joss's run. This is the first thing that he's really created and definitively ended, right?

He never really "ended" The Hood. The single arc has a lot of loose ends. I'm assuming it was cancelled or just never picked up for a second arc. Personally I think it's spectacular stuff. The cliffhanger reveals at the end are lame, but the story up to that point is a lot of fun.

I'm so glad I changed my mind and picked up Astonishing this week. The art is insane. One sequence in particular is a real...eye opener.

I have to echo the praise for that overlap conversation scene too. Classic Whedon.

Liked Illuminati too. Great reveals obviously. Great ending. But for whatever reason I didn't enjoy it as much as previous issues in the mini. There's something off, and I can't pinpoint it. It just didn't wow me.

Lots of good stuff this week. Robin was my only disappointment. This Ra's Al Ghul event is really not doing it for me. Damian is annoying as hell. Poor dialogue. Blah. C

Buffy was fun, Criminal was cool (the car chase scenes are beautiful), Y: The Last Man has me pumped for the final issue. A- for those three.

My pick this week is Astonishing X-Men. Second place goes to Y.

dave-accampo
11-08-2007, 03:49 AM
I haven't read everything yet, but this does indeed look like a whopper of a week.

I'll echo what people have said about Illuminati and Astonishing. Astonishing was perfect. Illuminati had the great "holy crap!" moment.

Y had some great jaw dropping moments, too. And i"m probably in the minority, but I've been enjoying McDuffie's Fantastic Four (and I"m not a big FF fan, either), but this looks to be the start of a great, fun storyline...kinda sorta spinning off of Civil War (in a good way).

I haven't read Hellboy, Lobster Johnson, Criminal, Iron Fist, etc., but those are all usually high quality reads, so....this is the best week I've had in a while.

I don't envy whoever has the pick this week.

I bought more comics today than in years.

Criminal - glad I picked up the first four issues in one swoop. Excellent.
Hellboy Darkness Calls This arc had a ton of folklore, huge concepts, killer fights but needed more personality from Hellboy. He was wandering and being knocked around. He needed a goal. Incredible artwork by Fegredo.
Lobster Johnson - Lots of fun, uneven art. For the first time, Dave Stewart's colors didn't work for me.
Metal Men I really want to like this. I'm sticking it out because of my love for the original series. I can't go back because the old stuff is too goofy and silly for my present taste but double timeline in the story would be hard enough to follow but the art makes it nearly incomprehensible. I like the look of the art but not the storytelling.
Omega Man (1 & 2) Just picked it up and haven't read it. Loved the feel of what I skimmed. Bought on iFanboy's recommendation.
Fearless #1 - a gamble, looked interesting. We'll see.
Jack of Fables(from last week) - I enjoy Fables, don't have the Jack trades yet. I picked this up because I love Andrew Robinson's incredible sketchbooks and he did the art here.

I bought the Iron Fist trade last week so I'll continue in trades.

And in an effort to send good karma to Josh (and Conor) I picked the comics from the front of the stack! Criminal actually had a couple of dings but I don't collect for the ages. Didn't hurt the entertainment.

On a sad note, a guy came in the store to show the comics he got graded and slabbed. <Shakes head> Another couple of comics dead and gone. Suffocated in their prime.

Man. Buffy was good this week. Really really kept me engrossed once the storylines started crossing. Vaughan knows Faith and Buffy so well... I couldn't hear some of the voices as well as I could when Joss wrote them, but man did that fighting rock... Two really good Vaughan books with really good fighting... Love that stuff...

i can see this, it felt more like a Secret Invasion one shot then part of the Illuminati mini, not necessarily a bad thing because it gives the mini a bit more weight in terms of the marvel u but it felt more like it should have been called `Prelude to Secret Invasion`, something more akin to the Messiah Complex one shot

I dunno. There wasn't any clear reasoning behind Bedard and Guedes leaving.

It could have simply been that the two were just fill-ins. Which would seem odd given that Guedes and Bedard put a lot into redesigning the new new Supergirl in look and tone.

The only trouble with discussing Criminal is that it's so good there's nothing to ***** about. :D

I don't think it's surpassed Sleeper for me, cause it was such a nice ending to my interest in the Wildstorm U. I'd followed Tao right out of the pages of Wildcats, and Sleeper along with Point Blank ties everything together so nicely.

Since then I've barely read Wildstorm books, I'm mean, authority anyone?

But you're right Six, the ending was genuinely moving.

A while back I think people were bugging Ron, Josh and Conor for not finishing Point Blank, (by people I mean me) and they said they might add it to the list, have they re-read it yet? Or finished reading it?

I notice it's the Around Comics club of the month club book this...uhhhh...month.

Astonishing X-Men: What more can be said? Comic book Nirvana.

Illuminati: I am so stoked for "Secret Invasion" it's not even funny. I shall be buying this and ignoring "Final Crisis". Friggin' multiverse! (P.S. - That scene where the "Avengers" Super Skrull and the "X-Men" Super Skrull attack the Illuminati? My new wallpaper.)

Buffy: I am not a Buffy fan; I am buying this book to give to my sister who has every season of Buffy... on VHS recorded directly from the television. That having been said: This is a hella fun book.

Uncanny X-Men: So far, the two issues of Messiah CompleX have succeeded to transporting me back in spirit to the height of X-Men dominance in the mid-90's. And I mean that in a GOOD way.

Fantastic Four: I love the dynamic between the family, which is why I never drop FF, through good stories and through bad. This seems like the start of a good story. Hey, Dr. Doom is in it.

Supergirl: Art - eh. Writing - WTF? Status - Dropped. (Which is cool, because I need to make room for "Titans" and "Batman and the Outsiders".

Big week coming up this Wednesday. I don't remember what makes it a big week, but I remember looking at the Diamond list and saying, "Ooo! Big week!" Stay frosty!

I also appreciated the shout out to Intelligence in the Back Matter.

Seriously, Brubaker just shot up some cool points by referencing this show. It's too bad it's so hard to get a hold of in the States... also too bad that FOX bought the rights to it and will "adapt" it themselves, into a new series.

Regardless, the show in its current form, is one of the top 3 shows on TV... coming behind only The Wire and The Shield.

Finally got my books. Astonishing came out on top. Since I had little time, I made all my reviews 10 words. Full reviews here. (http://www.kwoktalk.libsyn.com)

It's even better when he makes up some of those words himself. "Skrullmaggedon". Cool.

Not to take away from the 10 word reviews, but "Skrullmaggedon" is a term Bendis coined. I wanna say on Word Balloon.

Thanks Race, but Paper is right, I took the term from Bendis. I guess, that would give me an F in the eyes of the English teacher. ;)
