Speaking of pessimism
IGN.com has posted an Ultimates 3 preview (http://comics.ign.com/articles/833/833811p1.html)
After reading Loeb's work lately, I've lost faith in the man. After, in my opinion, a truly stellar run with Millar and Hitch, this looks more like the anti-Ultimates. Usually I don't mind Joe Madureira's but I don't think it fits. And Loeb's track record..... I mean did you guys read Wolverine??? urg.....
but i'll probably give it shot anyway. What do you guys think?

I think Madureira's art looks pretty sweet. The feel/look of the team seems very different from Millar/Hitch (LOVED THE RUN!). I think I'm going to wait for trades on this one and see what the consensus is on U3

The art is pretty cool in its own right, but it is a departure. I just finished Ultimates 2 in trades today. I can't wait for 3.

I never really "got" the whole Ultimates thing but I've always kind of dug Joe Mad's style. I might pick this up.

Oh Joe Mad, how I love your style.
Why must it be tainted though with always having a big breasted girl that is obviously quite cold??
Other then that little fact, I'm really excited to see my childhood hero come back to comics!

That art looks incredible (especially this (http://media.comics.ign.com/media/142/14217434/img_5048560.html) page). I huge departure, but I'd hate to see someone doing an impression of Hitch, because I have yet to see anyone come close to his level in that style. I'd rather have something completely different. I'm really excited for this, disappointed that we've waited this long for a five part series, but that it should be fun.
Wow, that does look amazing. I was out of comics when Joe Mad was really hitting it big but I've heard a lot about him.
I'm looking forward to this even more now.

Despite not liking that Black Panther or that Hawkeye and feeling burned out over Venom I am enthused for this book. I don't know why.
I totally dig the wasp re-design.

What else has this artist done? I'd like to enjoy his work while not supporting the Loeb.

I don't think it's a secret that I...do not....approve...of what Loeb does...with...his life and what those...choices....do to my life.
I really like the art though.

I'm not a fan of Loeb either, but I was talking about the art comment.
You really don't know who Joe Mad is?

Well... ok then.
His art style pretty much lead to the end of the Jim Lee/Leifeld art of the 90's. He pretty much ushered in the Manga style of art into mainstream American comics. He's known for being the main artist that did the design work for the X-Men's Age of Apocalypse.

http://image.comicvine.com/uploads/vol/6000/5536/5536-40720-1-astonishing-x-men_400.jpg
He broke off from Marvel with Humberto Ramos and another artist to form their own company. Sadly he was horrible with deadlines, and his book Battle Chasers was never finished.

Since then he quit comics and did nothing but art for video games. Slowly he's been coming back by doing covers, and this is his big return to comics.

I think his style really benefits from the new coloring. It's like the coloring finally caught up with the pencils.

Want to hear something funny?
That Battle Chasers cover was actually colored by the same group that colored the Ultimate 3 artwork.
It's a group called Liquid Graphics.
They've both grown so darn much over the years.

So i just finished the Ultimates 2 HC and wow, i loved these 2 stories. Epic action and story telling. I went on the old Wikipedia to look at where the series was going and i got totally confused, so i was wondering if you guys could help at all...
1) I hear Ultimates 3 so far is not good. Is it true and can i get any more reasons why other than "it's not good." Thanks.
2) So Ultimates 3 is only 5 issues? And then it's being tied over to an Ultimatum line that is only gonna be written in Ultimate X-men and Ultimate Spider Man. Is that even right, and does that mean Ultimates is going away. Granted this synopsis is abbreviated, but i have basically no idea what is going on w/ Ultimates and if it will continue to exist, help me out, eh?
Thanks guys and gals.

1) Ultimates 3 takes everything I liked about the first two series, The semi-real world feel, and throws it out the window. Outside of it being named the same, I personally don't think of it as an Ultimates story. It's just completely a different story.
2) There is rumors of one of the Ultimate series being cancelled after Ultimatum. Some say it's Ultimates, but most think its Ultimate X-Men.

We have several threads concerning the Ultimates and the Ultimate line. I'm pretty sure of it. But I don't want to sound like a search function Nazi. Just saying is all...
But yeah, what my man Kahuna said; Ultimates 1 & 2 are lots of fun. Ult. 3 is like an abortion committed to paper.

In Ultimate 3's defense, the art is nothing short of spectacular. It's frakkin brilliant. The writing? I dunno... I'm still on the fence (I'm the only one, too)

I would gladly sell half this forum into slavery to have more Mad drawn books. The problem is, he's not a good match for the Ultimate series as we know it.
I still say he should have been put on a short Mighty Avengers run.

I concur. But that doesn't mean it's not frakkin beautiful and then some. I don't care what people say about Loeb, I'm gonna buy that book for the whole run just for his art.
Him on Mighty Avengers would be awesome... I wouldn't mind him on... anything, really... I dunno if he fits with New Avengers or Daredevil, or the others that has the gritty going for it right now...

OK, so i'll hold off on Ultimates 3. After all, i really don't want anything that will bring down my opinion of the series after the great time i just had reading it. What other books fit in this vein though. I've ready Astonishing X-men 1st run, Captain America, and these Ultimate books - do you have other recommendations that kind of have the same feel of these books. Some huge plots and art - granted i know i'm hitting the creme of the crop as far as these things go, but any other recs? Thanks.

Do you want only Marvel stuff?
The Authority is pretty much the template for the Ultimates. Might want to check that out along with Planetary.

No it doesn't have to be marvel only - i like to keep my horizons expanded. In fact, i'm really looking hard at going after Gotham Central - which i've been wanting to read. I know its not in the same vein as ultimates. I just would rather buy stuff that is collected right now if possible - that's what has kept me away from Gotham Central, i don't really wanna buy 5 or 6 trades, i'd rather buy a couple hardcovers or better yet, a complete volume.
I've looked at Authority and Planetary before, i'll take another look. What about Young Avengers or any of the new avengers books. Do any of them stack up well as far as storyline and scope?

Pick up all the Stormwatch and Authority trades written by Ellis. It's his best stuff. I'd also pick up the latest issue of FF. I loved it.

Young Avengers are good and the hard cover just came out with all the issues and the annual. You do need a little bit of background into the whole Avengers Dissemble but not so much that I would say don't read it if you haven't read that arc. That being said I love YA and would definitely recommend it.

Um, don't wait for a Gotham Central collected volume. Absolutely brilliant series. Not too popular though. You'll have to live with the TPB for the foreseeable future.
Young Avengers was ok. I'm not too big a fan. But it's good.
New Avengers is also a little hit & miss. Though when it's good, it's damn good. Just skip the boring Sentry arc and buy up the rest of NA.

We haven't had a new issue since February 20th! Ultimates 3 #4 is already 3 months late. Supposedly it will finally come out June 25th. I don't even remember what happened in the first three. How can such big books be so late?

It sucks anyway. Too bad the first issue wasn't late then maybe I wouldn't have made the mistake of buying it.

It wasn't dropped prior to this?!?!? im honestly shocked.
this book has completely sullied the good name (yes, GOOD name despite scheduling problems) of the Ultimates. it's a friggin' travesty

Same here, Josh. They had so much lead time on this book, there's really no excuse at this point.
What was it Darwyn said?
"If the books aren't done on time, they just aren't doing the work" or something like that

Between the general consensus on the shitty story, and all the delays, I think if this thing continues to sell in the top twenty when the next issue actually does it... well, let's just say that'll be kind of sad. IMO, of course.

Man, it used to be whenever shipping lists came out, the first thing I'd look for was the latest issue of Ultimates 1 or 2, no matter how late it was. And when an issue was on the list, man, it felt like Christmas. With Vol. 3... I forgot the book existed. I could care less.

Even me, who is always willing to give creator's the benefit of the doubt, is annoyed by this book. It was announced at the end of '05 that Loeb and Mad were going to be on this book. Almost three years later and we only have two or three issues of it? Ridiculous.
