Call me a girl, but I don't care for alcohol. I have nothing against drinking whatsoever, but being intoxicated has never done much for me and unless it's a drink that is both hard and sweet (or a really damn good scotch), I can't stand the taste.
Everyone always told me "well, it's an acquired taste". Yeah, I'm sure eating shit and drinking piss is an acquired taste, too -- but why would I want to?!
Also, I get a little queasy around alcohol sometimes if it has a strong smell. I can't even each butterscotch anymore (which is my favorite!) because it smells/tastes just a tiny bit like alcohol. This whole queasy thing stems from when I was 20 and drank an entire 750ml bottle of twenty-year-old pear-brandy (65% alcohol) in a matter of five minutes. On an empty stomach. With little prior experience drinking before that (except when I was dating a girl whos mother was a bartender and insisted she make me drinks all the time).
I don't remember much that night, except giggling like a girl. Having sex with someone (I'm pretty sure it was my girlfriend and not her skeezy roommate) and then passing out until morning.
I've only had a few dozen drinks since then and that's only when a girl insists she buy me a drink. That's the one exception I make to the whole "beer tastes like bitter piss" thing. What a shame, too -- Portland has more strip clubs, coffee shops and microbrews than any other place on earth.
you're totally a girl!:D jk. To each his own. I too had some bad experiences with hard liquer, especially before I made the connection tequila/vodka shots and puking my guts out. The first couple times I drank at around 15 or so, I could take shots really easily - i was like "oh it tastes nasty for a second and thats it". Of course, after about 8 shots in the next 20 min, the whole room was spinning and I puked a few minutes later. I didn't drink much for a while after that. Then I went to college and well...
Oh and I'm drinking an Alaskan Amber right now and it's delicious :)

being an ex-pat canuck I'm a huge fan of Moosehead. We couldn't get it hear in Ontario for years. the only way to get it was to import it from the US. Something to do with the laws on selling booze here.... but thankgod they brew it in ontario and I can get it any time I like.

The last time I had a beer, it was a Rogue Brutal Bitter (from Newport Oregon):
http://www.rogue.com/brews.html#brutal
They make really intense and out of the ordinary beers, but this one is really good. It's really crisp and way more hoppy than most people are used to. I normally don't like beer because of the bitterness of it, but the Rogue Brutal Bitter is an exception -- and isn't really as "brutal" as the name implies.
I had it in a local pub while visiting Newport with friends, so I don't know where all you can get it (other than probably at the website).
yeah, I've had a rogue before, but it wasn't the brutal bitter. It was good. I remember because it had a cool box with a skeleton guy on it.

I mostly drink imported or microbrewery beers nowadays. I have many favorites and enjoy sampling new kinds when the opportunity presents itself, but I will always have a special place in my heart for such classics as Stella Artois and Guinness!

here's another puke story (not me this time). Again in high school, we'd just drink whatever we could get our hands on, and this particular night, it was white wine, kaluah, a couple beers, and some gin. This was after my puking incident so I drank some beer and left it at that, but jeff drank quite a bit of everything. He passed out and about a half hour later, started projectile vommittng everywhere in my basement. He was still unconcious and I was freaked out because i thought he might affixiate, so i started kicking him in the side. Finally, he woke up and , luckily, didn't remember the kicking part. We told my parents it was food poisining. there was a lot of food poisoning that year.
I know I could go over and check the diggnation forum, but they're a little shifty eyed over there. DROMIES, what is you favorite beer (and is it cool if I bum one?)I love beer. One of man's better inventions, I'd say.
Some of my favs:
Pacifico
Red Stripe
Anchorsteam (a San Francisco beer)
Pyramid Hefeweizen
Sierra Nevada
Newcastle Brown Ale
Bass Pale Ale
Murphy's Stout
McEwans Scottish Ale
Call me a girl, but I don't care for alcohol. <snip>hahah. Seumas, you crack me up. That was a lot of text to say "I don't drink" in response to open question about favorite beers. :)

I like those alot as well. The other one I found while living in seattle was session. I think full sail makes it and it's in the same little grenade bottles as red stripe. Its pretty damn good.
Well, one doesn't want to just say "I don't drink because I hate the taste and beer makes baby jesus cry". Had to explain that I've had my way with the booze (or rather its had its way with me), but I'm just not a big fan. :)Hahaha. The point was, I thought it was funny to even spend that much effort on the topic if you don't drink it. :) That's all.
Big scotch fan, though. Too bad the good stuff is almost prohibitively expensive. :(I hear ya. Several years ago, I got a big promotion and pay raise. I bought myself a bottle of 25 yr old Macallan Scotch. If you know scotch, you might have an idea of how expensive that is. Only a few people have had a taste from that bottle. heh.

When my mom wasn't around, my "stepdad's" way of treating a cold, sore throat, sniffles (pretty much everything) was a few spoons of Everclear.
Burned like hell the first time. Actually, burned like hell every time . . .
My all purpose cure is good old fashioned, extra strength, narcotic-filled robitussin. Just gotta get the right kind.

I believe that neither ibuprofen nor robitussin can be purchased in Portland without giving the cashier your identification and signing a form. And you can only purchase one or perhaps three. I'm not sure if you can even get the real ibuprofen at all in Portland anymore. Last I heard, it was called ibuprofen, but had no actual ibuprofen in it. And you thought having to prove you were eighteen years old to buy paint was retarded.
I could see robitussin 'cause some cough syrup has an opiate in it, but ibprofin's just advil. I be suprised if they didn't allow that.

I try to drink whatever is local when I travel too - find some surprises (eg San Miguel on tap in Spain is great, but tastes worse than Coors/Bud in the US).
If I am buying a six pack, it will likely be Newcastle, except when its really hot in summer - then it might be Coronas ... something about a cold Corona on a hot day.

Depending on what Macallen that is, I wouldn't be surprised if you spent $300 for a bottle. I was drooling over a 1951 they have awhile back. I think it was around $3,000 for a bottle.
I haven't really found a place that carries good scotch around here, so I am stuck having it shipped... and sometimes the shipping is as expensive as the scotch itself. Especially if it's being imported. :(Scotch gets a bad rep because people go the "scotch and coke" route, then try scotch ont he rocks ... with the same crap they mix with with coke. Johnny Walker Red? Black?? Neither of them are great scoptches, but are what you get at most bars. The good stuff doesn't start to kick in until you go for the Johnny Blue or Green (as a name brand), or go for the regimental "aged" scothes.
The Wentworth Hotel in Sydney used to have a bar called "The Highland Bar" - it had scotches from all around the world, single malts, double malts, boubons, Irish ... all variety of what consistutes a Scotch style. We went in, had a single glass of 50 yo regimental scotch each (cant remember the name). I got laughed at because I still like mine on the rocks ... and they don't use an ice machine for their ice, so it was filtered water, and crystal clear cubes. A$35 for a glass of scotch was a bit much ... but worth it.

Smithwick's. Don't pronounce the W.
Since we're sharing drinking stories, I have two.
The first is short and sweet. I was in high school and stupid. I drank a fifth of rum and a fifth of gin in the course of about 2 hours. I passed out in my friends backyard. Sometime much later in the night, they all smoked up and thought it would be funny to haul my ass out to the sidewalk. I woke up sometime the next morning out on the street. Ahh, memories.
The second was the night the White Sox won game 2 of the World Series last year. I was at the bar throwing back Smithwick's, all along thinking the Sox would lose. But, lo and behold! They won! The place erupted, the bartenders started buying me drinks. My friends started buying me shots. People I didn't know were ordering rounds of shots. I ordered some shots. I don't really remember how much I drank, but, it probably was about 10 beers and 10 shots over the course of a baseball game (so, maybe three hours?).
It was raining, but I decided to walk home. My route home took me through a park. I was literally falling-down-drunk stumbling through the rain, and I saw a park bench and said I just gotta sit down for a sec.
Well, several hours later, I am shooken awake by three guys standing over me, in the rain, asking if I was ok. Thinking they were thugs and mugging me, I quickly get up and run away.
So, I finally make it home, wet as ****, and what does my dumbass do? But get into bed, soaking wet, shoes and clothes on.
I woke up sometime the next day, showered and headed back to the bar to watch game 3 :D
So, anyways, when you see a hapless sap passed out in the gutter, or sleeping in the park... there's a slightly elevated chance that it's me!! You should go on up and ask!

I believe that real ibuprofen contains pseudofed. Items containing pseudofed are sold only to people providing identification, signing a log and in limited quantities (no more than three, I believe?) because meth labs use products containing pseudofed to make their product.
No dude. Sudafed has pseudoephedrine, which is what they have people sign forms for now. Ibuprofen is just the name of what's in Advil, and shit like that. There's no way they'd make it hard to buy that, because you can't make meth it nor can you get high with it, like you can with pseudoephedrine.

Mmm... beer.
When I go out with friends, I usually start off with Guinness. It's oh so good on tap. My regular all-purpose beer is Red Stripe. If I'm bored with those, I'll drink a Stella or a Hefeweizen. If I'm feeling fancy I'll drink a Chimay, the blue bottle. If I am at a party with my Mexican family, I'm forced to drink Corona.
Let's see...
Terminal Gravity IPA
Widmer Bros W'06 Red Ale
Rouge Dead Guy Ale
Portland Benchmark Old Ale
(supporting the locals)
If I recall correctly, the cold medicine thing has gone federal now...

it's cool in my neck of the woods to drink Old Style...although that's primarily because it's the beer of choice for Cubs fans. I linked to the Hoegaarden website awhile back. I don't care for the wheat beers so much but this one is nice.
Pumpkin Ale and Blue Moon (pumpkin version) are also good choices.

I usually drink Beck's or Heineken, but at parties it's usually cheap to buy VB, or Carlton Draughts. I usually lean towards Carlton though. Then again beer is just a way to get drunk. If I need taste a friend introduced me to a Belgian Beer called Duval. Mmmmm the only beer that actually tastes good, I also wanted to buy some later, and OMG is it ever expensive!!
The VB and Carlton are local Australian beers, and for funny trivia Fosters is actually owned by a New Zealand company, that maybe somebody allready posted before.
Real geeks don't get drunk though ;) the fun thing about being a geek is the stupid shit you get up to sober.
