Like a lot of people, I found out about Alex and Kevin via TechTV(G4). When I heard they started a podcast (diggnation) after leaving there I was super stoked and watched it religiously. Then by the numerous plugs of TRS by Alex on DN I started watching this show. Here's the dilemma.
Is it just me or has DN become boring now? I cant get through an ep without fast forwarding and if I miss one, I just say screw it. Its not exciting at all anymore and most of the time its not funny either like it used to be.
This show has so much charm and the guys are so great together. I get antsy when I miss a show. Much like the greatest show ever, Heroes. (Sorry Jeff)
I love Rev3 and will continue to support it and the shows that it produces but has anyone else noticed how dull diggnation is compared to TRS?
flame on.

Diggnation has its highs and lows. Sometimes it seems like Alex and Kevin are really into it and other times it seems like they're just trying to pump out another episode. I still watch Diggnation religiously though. Theres always something in there that'll make me laugh.
The TRS guys, in my opinion, display a little more passion and that shows. It always results in a fun, very entertaining episode.

I think one of the great things about shows like TRS and Diggnation is the personal look into their lives we get each week. After two years though, they don't have too many side stories about their past or "this funny thing that happened one time". I started watching DN around episode 70 and was glad I went back to watch / listen to the earlier ones because of the above reason. Now it's a lot easier for them to do an episode of Diggnation without going off the beaten path too much so you dont get much extra bits.
I still watch diggnation for Alex though. If he left I'd stop watching. Kevin started to get to me with the wine shit though. I wish he'd just have sex with Gary from winelibrary and just shush. Friggin spit can for wine? Come on dude.
I used to think that some of the stupid shit Kevin said was endearing but after a while I realize it's not a joke and he's just being stupid. It's easy to see these moments because while Kevin is talking about something Alex gives his "holy shit I don't know what's wrong with Kevin" look to the camera.

Totally agree with this assessment.

diggnation just needs something to reignite the flame. It's just lacked passion for awhile now.

I think what you are saying just gets to the heart of this new media. Diggnation was great because it was new. There weren't many things out there for video podcasts that was truly entertaining and regular, especially on a weekly basis. It was also roughly the same time as a tv show. As much as I love Tikibar and Ask a Ninja, both are short snippets and Tikibar is certainly not weekly. Both are occasional treats but can't really become almost standard viewing. They are more like when you watch videos on YouTube, just a lot better.
Diggnation was different. It was long enough and entertaining enough to actually be viewed and fit into people's schedules like a tv show. That was very new on the web.
The issue is that video podcasting is evolving and TRS is an example of that. TRS to me is as good, if not better than a lot of television shows. It has simply raised the bar.
Think of Jurassic Park and the when that first came out, how amazing that was and how it blew everyone away. And yet, graphic wise it certainly is not the best anymore. Watching it now, yes it is a good film, and over time will probably be marked as a classic due to it's impact, but other films have come along to replace it as mind blowing and innovative.
I still really like Diggnation and will continue to watch, but I think it is hard to compare the two. For a lot of us who watch both shows, I think the issue really boils down to we changed more than the show. Our tastes have grown.

Diggnation is getting shorter and shorter. The most recent episode was sufficiently long, but the ones before that are pretty short. If every episode was like the last one, I would be content.

No flaming from me - totally agree.
What happened to Diggnation?
Digg happened to Diggnation. Self rule is great, but the problem with mob mentality is that the mob are stupid. Look at the stories being submitted, and you see that the they aren't that great to discuss.
BEST EVAR! Oh great, another Ubuntu release.
AWESOME! Oh joy, another iPhone story.
[PICS] Oh wow, video of a guy getting kicked in the nuts by a Ubuntu user because he wouldn't STFU on his iPhone.
Also, format has gotten stale. Not because of Alex and Kevin ... but because immitation is both a sign of flattery, and a sign you have become a commodity. How many podcasts are now released with two guys sitting on a couch drinking <insert alcoholic beverage of choice>?
TRS is definately the premier show on Rev3 for me.

I actually like iPhone stories because I own an iPod Touch so 50% of the time, the news affects me.

It's a bit weird. I don't enjoy each Diggnation episode as much as I enjoy each TRS episode, but I think I'd take Diggnation dying out harder. I've been watching Diggnation for so long, it's so burnt into my routine.
Diggnation to me is more serious, despite the drinking, and at some point it's more than just people thinking something about any given news-item or new game/movie, it's a conscious effort to bring forward news that a large amount of people, including the show-hosts care about.
As much as I love experiencing the "friends talking to friends about 'cool stuff'" it's not nearly as noble as an effort to try to enlighten people in any way, and that's why Diggnation, at the end of the day, is more important to me.

I agree 100%. You made some really good points in your post.
