It looks like Universal and Fox have pulled out of the deal with Microsoft with the Halo movie.

You guys are silly. This movie will still happen.

And the director is FAR from inexperienced. He has a crapload of experience in the right areas and although he's young, look at how old some your favorite directors were when they made their first huge movie. And they probably didn't have Peter Jackson behind them along with Weta.

The movie will happen. Maybe not soon. But it's gonna happen. They only lost the 5 million from Fox and Universal needed to go to the next phase. Someone else will pony it up and make a crapload on the other end.

I don't know, Jon. I haven't seen that this guy has done much on a big scale and $200m isn't what most successful directors have for their first "huge" movie, as far as I know. It's usually something more like $60m or $100m. $200m is James Cameron, epic proportions sized. It seems like taking a manager of a local KFC and making him the CEO of PEPSICO. Then again, I know how much you personally detest my analogies.

Of course, I'm biased because I think that Halo should be directed by Penny Marshall.

Hahaha! Don't get me wrong. The budget is huge and that can be a directing problem but it's really going to be a producers issue filtering all of that cash through the director and look who's producing. That movie will cost that much. But the producers on it are very experienced and they'll hopefully be able to make sure it's being spent right. Now the vision and the talent? I like what I've seen so far. Although yes, Penny Marshall would be better...

I intend no offense to HALO fanboys, I love HALO.

Since videogame movies have universally sucked, I won't shed a tear.

I should hook up on this, I'm constantly making craploads on the other end... I have a feeling that what I produce and how this thing will look at the end of the day aren't going to be that different.

Umm, correct me if I'm wrong, but studio dropping out != movie cancelled.

They just need another person to fund the film.

I've read a few articles now about this and it seems that nobody can confirm if Fox has dropped the project or not. Universal deffinately has because they could not make an agreement with MS over profit sharing. Whatever happens now, Microsoft said the film is not cancelled by any means and that Peter Jackson is still onboard with them. I didn't read if the director is still attached or not though. This is just going to delay the film which was scheduled for a 2007 release.

Here's an idea....save the companies $200 million and go make three super-action movies. I'd rather see them than another video game movie.

Yeah, Peter Jackson. Wow. That's awesome. Oh wait, he's producing it, right? So that guarantees it's gonna be a great movie, right? Yeah, and George Lucas produced Howard the Duck.

Halo did not have a strong enough story to be made into a movie. Get over it.

A friend of mine works for weta, and last we spoke he told me it's going pretty smoothly so far. He's been with weta since King Kong. Also he had nothing but glowing things to say about the director and it looks like it will be a good movie ;)

Mind you my friend isn't high up, he's just one of the prop and set builders, and he sculpts the characters too. I haven't spoke to him in a month now, so who knows really.

not a strong enough story!? do you know how much material they have behind halo. it maybe an overrated video game to some. it maybe just the multilayer experience to others. but i am a halo fan who does not like halo for the game it self but for the 3 NOVELS that have come out for it the I LOVE BEES BACK STORY A.R.G. just wiki halo and look around for story if u really need it. the first and 3rd novels were awesome. the second one sucked. ilovebees story was awesome it was like a radio play or something. just envision a great movie but all u got was just sound with lots of dialouge. if u search for it you will get story. and if you are one of those people who think masterchief is the soldier from marathon then you have even more story from 3 games to add to that.

I agree completely about the Halo stories. Bungie created such a rich universe to pull from that only Star Wars and Star Trek rival it in terms of sci-fi scope. Though I do love the gameplay also. Halo CE is my favorite game on any system.

Nylund's new Halo book is coming out on Haloween. I can't wait.

well when was there this much backstory in a game universe? AND when has there been such a huge fan base for the game that the movie is coming out with?. sure mario bros has a OMFG fanbase but mario DIDNT HAVE STORY FOR CRAP plumber jump into pipes jump on things eat glowing flowers shoot fireballs at turles and mushrooms rescue princess. and you guys should watch Neill Blomkamp's shorts. they are very good.

Guys. Universal and Fox only pulled out a few million from a 200 million dollar movie. Trust me. Peter and friends will be able to find it VERY quickly.

And for those people who saw X-3... do you REALLY want Fox involved in this?

The Halo movie probably just got better. And Graham just got harder.

If you're going by backstory and fanbase, then the Warcraft movie is going to kick Halo's puny ass.

I might be going on a limb here, but the first animated Street Fighter 2 movie was preety sweet. does animation not count? especially anime?

As for crappy video game movies, has Carzy Taxi been made yet? I would expect that to be rubbish and I want to see it! I loved that game, and I wonder how you could make that into a movie?

Oh and on to Halo, people are still working on pre production. So if it has been cancelled, the guys working on it haven't been told.

Although apparantly Richard and Peter like to keep people employed, so they usually keep guys working on anything. Apparantly Peter Jackson kept staff working between projects to make him thunderbirds props and toys, because he was pitching to make it a movie himself, and when he didn't win the bid to make the movie they still worked on the sets, just so he can have it finished :)
