View Full Version : The Christmas/Holiday 2007 GIMME Thread

I've been charged, by wife and family, to come up with a list of materials which can be purchased for me during the upcoming holiday shopping seasons.

I've got this bad habit of getting just about everything I want before anyone else has a chance to buy it for me. It's not that I have an unending income, but I'm very goal based, and when I want something, i figure out how to get it. It's sort of a bad habit. Perhaps you heard of a little something called the iPhone?

As far as comics go, I tend to pick up most of what I want because I need to consume content or the show, so outside of a couple Omnibi (Captain America and Amazing Spider-Man), I'm sort of filled up on the comics quotient.

In that same vein, for years, I got DVDs, and now, I just realized, I don't ever really watch them, and there's no sense adding even more to the ridiculous amount I have. Until there's some new classic movie, I've pretty much got what I need. Of course, there are some exceptions. Plus I don't really have time to watch them much anymore. Same goes for games. I manage to get through about 2-3 video games a year, and my card is booked for the moment.

So, what are folks looking to score this holiday season? Here's what I've been able to come up with so far.

1) Bose Quiet Comfort Headphones (http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_PRODUCT_PAGE_EVENT&product=qc3_headphones_index&ck=0) - I tried these on in an Apple store, and I was just shocked by awesome. They're stupid expensive though, and I don't think anyone is going to spend this much on me. But they're neat.

2) The Wire, seasons 3 and 4. Now I know this goes against what I said just a minute ago, but if there was any DVD set I want to have for all time, it's these. Plus I have 1 and 2, so it's just wrong not to have the rest, right?

3) Man Shaver - I've been thinking I'd like to have a go at a nice face shaver thing. I've never had one, and I assume that with the advances in technology, they do a pretty good job now, right? I tend to take the razor to my face like once a week at this point, so perhaps if it was easier, I'd do that. What a boring ****ing gift though. Seriously.

And that's about all I can think of at the moment. It's sad really. So what are you folks looking to get your greedy little hands on this year. What's that badass device/DVD set/Book/thing/consumer must-have that I'm not thinking of? Have at it, and let your avarice reign!

They're nifty.

All I really wanted and ever want for christmas is an endless black hole of books and movies, which makes November and December hell.

I purposely left osme stuff off my list because I knew I'd buy it for myself, but heres what I gave the parental units for a list this year:

Comics: (Note how many of thiese came from iFanboy video shows)
Maus
Blankets
American Born Chinese
Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth
Stagger Lee
Project X - Nissin Cup Noodle
Project X - Seven Eleven
Torso
Journey into Mohawk Country
Clumsy
Unlikely
Phonogram
Box Office Poison
Lost at Sea
Narcoleptic Sunday

DVDs:
The Office Season Three
Weeds Season One (And maybe two)
30 Rock Season One
Heroes Season One
The Office UK Complete Series
Arrested Development Season One (And maybe two and three)
Dexter Season One

Video Games:
Tetris DS
Spider-Man 3 DS
Transformers: The Game DS

Wow. Crap. I just realized that when I gave this to my parents it didn't have a prose section. Which is lame. Oh man. Im kind of pissed. Oh well. How did I forget that? Eff. That would be the largest part.

I think you and I are brothers separated at the womb Josh, you always seem to the same kind of tendencies that I do.

I really hate X-Mas, I really do. I'd rather be buying for people, but I don't really have the cash to cover everyone, just my parents and a few nephews and nieces. I really don't like getting gifts, but my mom insists on something every year, so I just give her a couple things, but if I want something I typically just go get it. But yeah, I'll probably just give her some higher ticket items that are coming close to the holidays so I can save cash on them myself, or some of the stuff I've been putting off. I think my list would be:

1) PSP. Now that there's a better Remote Play connection in place with my PS3, I think it's about time I started using this since it's really a great media tool when you have both systems.

2) Evgeni Malkin jersey. 2nd Fave player on the Pens and I think he's gonna stick around for a while.

3) Pirates of the Caribbean Blu-Ray set. I held off buying the other two on DVD despite owning the first one just because I knew this could come out down the road.

4) Harry Potter Blu-Ray set. This I don't know about so much, because I assume they'll just keep making sets every time a new film comes out. I think I'm just going to keep buying them on DVD until the last one is out, and then sell them all or gift them and replace them with the final Blu-Ray one. But if I get antsy this is a good option.

And that's really all I've got. Figures though, I'm talking about things I wouldn't mind getting as gifts just as I'm planning to put in a $60 Amazon order for myself. Stupid impulsive Joe.

Since I'm cutting my hours in Jan to go back to school I think we'll be calling a gift truce this year. I'm the exact opposite of you two though. I never buy anything. I hold onto my cash with an iron miserly grip and ironically hardly ever buy anything for myself unless we're in financial crisis (then I buy something to prove to myself we're okay). But I still have a few things floating around in my mind.

New PC Headset
Cute Laptop Bag
Sountracks/Scores (I love them, but haven't bought since... Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Amazing by the way.)
-28 days later, Harry Potter, Everything is Illuminated, The Fountain (Clint Mansell), Pan's Labrynth (so beautiful it hurts), Perfume (For The 13th Essence alone), About a Boy (Badly Drawn Boy), Anything by Jon Brion (Magnolia, I <3 Huckabees, Punch Drunk Love...) except The Break Up.... because it only has two of his songs on a 14 track cd. What a travesty.
Some DS game would be nice, but I don't really know what's coming out.

I have the same goal-oriented problem, Josh. My friends always tell me I'm impossible to buy gifts for, because if they know I want it, they know I'll go out and get it. But, being that we're all either just out of college or wrapping up college, money is tight. So I'm trying to get everybody to agree that we'll refrain from buying gifts for each other, and use whatever money we were going to spend (or a fraction of it) for hanging out over the holidays. Movies and shows and dinners and such.

But, that still leaves my Christmas obsessed family. I like to make a big list so that I'm still sort of surprised. I don't want or expect to get all of these things, but I don't want to know exactly what I'll be getting.

Here's the list I've been keeping on an Apple Sticky note on my desktop:

Um, yeah. I tend to buy stuff for myself before anyone has the chance to.

Don't really want anything especially expensive. Maybe a nice winter coat and some boots. Which I'm sure I will be getting.

Re: Bose Headphones

Josh, those cans are good. But I think there are less expensive models with much better fidelity than those.

I don't know to what ends you wish to use your phones, but look to the AKG K701's. They can be found online in the sub-$300 range and are worth every penny.

Sound almost as good as the fabled Grados GS1000's- which cost about +$1,000 a pop. I think that's pretty good for $300 phones to match up favorably to such lofty heights. And if you can spot the difference in quality, then you should call Albini stat.

My family asked me yesterday for the dreaded LIST.
I've always felt uncomfortable writing these things. It feels like I'm begging for things, I'd probably just go out and buy myself anyway.

Sad part is, my family and friends all know I don't really do the LIST so I can't go out with them to any store after September. Everything I take an interest in is noted, and I get the "Do you want that for Christmas?" line everytime.

Seeing as how I was pretty much threatened with bodily harm this year, I'll put up some of my list, when I get it done.

All that negativity aside, Cool idea for a thread, Josh! I know it's going to help me put a list together, thanks!

I just tell people to go to my Amazon page, which is filled with books, trades, and DVD's. (Not that I have the time to watch DVD's, either...)

Otherwise, I'm the only person on the planet who happily accepts gift certificates and flat-out cash. In fact, I solicited cash for my birthday last year because I wanted an iPod, but didn't want to put the burden on any one person.

What I really want, though, is a new computer (probably a laptop) of my very freakin' own.

Mostly because I'd rather just be able to browse a book or clothing store picking up things that catch my fancy that day.

Headphones are tough. I use a really cheap pair of in-ear sparkplugs. I'm ok with them, but you have to compress the plugs before you can get them to fit in the ear. So you can't just grab 'em and wear 'em. Then with the big studio headsets, you end up looking like the Great Machine, and I've also found that the weight can be hard on my neck.

I dig big around the ear headphones for two reasons. 1)I want to be able to listen at a level I want without worrying about people around me hearing. 2) I secretly like pretending I'm a DJ. Ear buds hurt my ears with prolonged use.

Haha. But all the sound engineers where 'em!

I hear what you're saying w/r/t comfortable phones. I prefer a proper set of cans for many reasons. But mostly the higher quality drivers in top of the line sets and better compatibility with amps than the in-ear models.

That being said, I love my Etymotics.

edit; Josh, those AKG's in the link are only $270 bones! Get on that shit.

Those AKG headphones might be a little biggish for my tastes. I'm sure there are better options should one want to do the research (which I don't), but I like the Bose ones because I tried them on in the loudest most crowded Apple store on 5th Ave, and they were really good at cancellation, and they're a bit smallish. They don't go over the ear, but they're really comfortable too. I am no audiophile, and really what I do more than anything is listen to podcasts on the train. On the flights I take a few times a year, I'd like to have something other than earbuds, which irritate my ears after an hour or so. But I thank you for the advice.

I would like to get some studio type headphones for my computer when working on editing our shows. There were some sony headphones that were around $75-100 on Amazon that were very highly rated by lots of people. In that area, there's just too much choice, and every single person has some argument about their personal tastes, and they all contradict each other.

Sorta like comics.

I'd recommend them. But these are not the kind of things you'd want to wear for a long time. They constrict your cranium like a python. So if you're monitoring stuff, cool. But really long use is gonna get painful.

I hate Christmas. I go all out in buying, but recieving is a problem for me. That's why I usually fill up a list with cheap(ish) books and movies. I always leave the CDs out because if I want a CD then I will own it, and it leaves that one thing I don't have to stop buying. On the plus side, this is the season my savings account grows the most.

16 versus 160 GB is pretty substantial.

How is your iphone internet wise? I finally got a chance to play with one, but it was in the store and it was incredibly clunky. I couldn't get most of the features working correctly. Safari and Youtube just didn't work and maps made me feel like I was frankenstein trying to work the damn thing. The clerk said some people have complained about the internets. Just curious.

You were having issues with the WiFi? Wow. I love how fast it is when I have a wifi connection.
When I'm using the Edge network, it does slow down, but it's faster then dial-up. So I can't complain.

The Maps app always seems to enthrall people when I show it to them, so I don't get that complaint either.

No it wasn't wifi. He did mention it works great when you're in area of a network. Maps I don't attribute to the interface, more so the slow connection. One wrong press and it would take forever to make it right as I watch it go in all the wrong directions. It was like walking through tar. I just wanted to make sure that was only a problem with the... edge network I guess it's called?

My other question is how do you deal with the smudge issue?

Sorry, I've been a cell phone snob for years. Edge network is the code word they use for the network band that the iPhone uses to get all its information (Calls, internet, text messages).
Years ago it was the best, so they called it the leading "Edge".

My other question is how do you deal with the smudge issue?
Smudge is an issue sometimes, but as far as I see it, anytime my fingers touch something I run the risk of smudging it. The iPhone doesn't attract anymore then usual smudges. I actually bought a screen protector film from Apple. It protects the glass screen from scratches just in case, but it also seems to smudge a lot less.

I want to make sure it doesn't sound like I'm criticizing. It's so pretty. Sometimes I go to the site to just watch the demonstrations and get entranced like the people on those HD commercials.
You don't sound like you're putting it down, relax. You're asking questions. It's darn expensive, so I get it.

I had a lot of worries about it as well. I didn't think there was anyway that it would work as smoothly as the commercials made it appear. Man was I wrong.

I can't wait for the Apple lightweight laptop. I'd love to have something I could easily tote around to a coffee shop or bookstore to do my writing. Even the macbook is a bit cumbersome.

Neil Gaiman has mentioned that the only thing keeping him from switching to a Mac is the weight issue. He uses a tiny little PC laptop for his writing.

I really want something small, portable and easy that I can check email and do some basic web tasks on via WiFi. I'm leaning towards the Asus Eee (http://eeepc.asus.com/en/) but that's a little more money then I want anyone to pay. Other then that I'm asking for clothes. It's been my experience that the second you lose your job, every item of clothing you own either doesn't fit or starts to fall apart.

Don't know how I missed your post, Luthor.
I was looking at the Asus Eee as well. It's a nifty little gadget. The only problem is there is no reason that it should be $400. When it was first announced it was supposed to be a $100 gadget, but it ballooned to 4 times that.
Funny thing is you can buy a full laptop for $400 this year that destroys the Asus when you compare the specs.

The selling point for the Eee, for me, is the easiness of it. I wouldn't have to drag around a bag or charger or what not. I travel fairly often and would really like something that size I could throw into my bag or pocket and not have to worry about...but yeah, the cost of it is ridiculous and makes it out of reach. When it gets down to that $150 - 200 range, I might jump.

Dear Santa,

I really need a new computer and it is so out of my price range. Over the summer, the hard drive on my Powebook died. At the moment I have a backup hard drive connected via Firewire. On top of that, thanks to some chaos caused by my dog thinking someone was trying to break into my house and an open bottle of soda, my keyboard is a sticky mess. The soda mishap has been somewhat dealt with. I pried off each key, swabbed them down individually, and cleaned off the sticky mess. However while doing so the teeth to the right shift key broke and so now I don't have a right shift key connected.

I'd like a new Macbook, but that is a bit much to ask for from my family.

SkullCandy Smokin Buds- When I first got them as a gift I thought, "Oh great eXXXXtreme skater headphones." They actually turned out to be really good. So good in fact that after I destroy my first pair by driving with them caught in the car door, I went out and bought another set.

Yeah they can, but it has nothing to do with actual technology. It's purely because they're pretty much Ear plugs with cords attach.

I haven't heard good things about the Bose earbuds, and the shape sticks out too much for me to like them.

I just had some $30-50 sony earbuds, which did the trick and were a hundred times more comfortable than the apple buds. When you're talking about listening to ipod music, it's so compressed already, than I just don't think the headphones have to be all that great.

But the thing about headphones, as was brought up earlier, is you go down the list of reviews on something like amazon, and every other review says the opposite of the one before it. And half of them start with, "I'm a professional sound engineer for 23 years, and these are the best/worst thing I've ever listened to."

It's a crapshoot I think. For me, I only had one option for the iPhone headphones with the working navigation controls and phone mic, and that was a set of v-moda earbuds, for $100 bucks. The reviews for them were all over the place, but mostly good. I expected them to sound a bit better honestly, but they're more comfortable, and they block out more sound than the stupid apple ones.

How's the bass, overpowering? I feel as though a lot of the cheaper phones over-do the lower frequencies to punch up the volume at the sacrifice of clarity and mid-end. Don't like that.

It's murder for anything other than Hip-hop and I would actually like to hear my concerto without distortion.

The most comfortable and sonically acceptable buds I've ever used are Etymotics. They're a bit too expensive for city living though.

I really enjoy cans, overall they're usually better quality. Just not as pocket-friendly.

Had to ask in order to judge rather you'd be comfortable with proper cans.

The best sounding $100 cans are Grados SR-80s. They offer the closest to audiophile standard sound I've heard while being inexpensive.

Durable as hell. So I use them for kicking around the city. Biggest drawback? The weight. They are cumbersome. No getting around that.

You also got the very comfortable Rp-HTX7s, which are very good "cheapies".

Do I like the tablet?

Let me put it this way: I use the laptop (which is very lightweight) at least as much as the iMac, and the tablet function (it converts from keyboard to tablet) is hella sweet. HOWEVER, if apple ever came out with a true tablet... I'm back to all Mac. However, I have few major complaints about Vista, and the plus side is now I have a machine that will run PC games. Not that I have time to play PC games, but still...

Sure, I love them, but stalling my book sohpping for two months because I'll get a random one from a list of thirty is a pain. Oh well. I love it, in the end. Always a surprise, and hey, it beats a donation to The Human Fund.

Worse than that. My sister wanted a list from me, something I didn't care to do but finally did. Comes Christmas she decides she didn't want to get me anything on the list because then it wouldn't be a surprise.

BWA-HA-HA! Oh, that's classic. She basically got you to write down everything you might actually LIKE to receive, which ultimately became a guarantee that you wouldn't get any of those items.

It's like a demented O. Henry story. :)

How about Christmas stuff you want, but probably won't get. Whether it be too pricy (seven iMacs) or too difficult for a loved one to procure on their own (the tail feather from a griffin!) what are the pipe dream wishlist items you've been pining for?

Me, I'd like a lot of the Adobe design software packages. From photoshop to web design. Maybe one of those HD cameras which work with memory cards as opposed to physical tapes. Some studio lights.

And a man-on-the-street microphone, like this one (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002U3S0M/ref=ord_cart_shr?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=A177UYWNKO0FSW&v=glance).

Oh, that kinda stuff I have an excess of.

It's time for a new desktop computer, and I'm thinking of an iMac. I've never had a mac as a main PC, but it's starting to feel like it's time.

I also want a new messenger bag, but in brown leather, so it's a little more dressy, but that carries my macbook pro. I haven't seen one I want yet, but the next step seems to be in the "over $300" level, which is too much.

And finally, since the introduction of Guitar Hero 3 in my life, I've been very strongly desiring to get a new guitar. I want a Les Paul Junior very much, but also, I don't actually own just a regular American Stratocaster, and I think I should. Now, I don't really have time to play guitar, and I haven't learned anything new in years. And I certainly don't think I'll be joining a band any time soon, but I want a new guitar. And that's definitely out of the financial ballpark.

Top of mind right now is the iPhone. Actually I'm thiiiiis close to picking one up. I know a lot of you guys are iPhone users...what's the verdict? Take the plunge? Wait for 2nd Gen?

We shot on the Panasonic AG-HVX200. Interesting experience. We had two P2 cards, and we basically kept interchanging them, bringing each card back to a laptop setup with a couple external drives. Worked out pretty well, and it was easy to make sure that everyone who needed it had all the day's footage each day.

(and thanks for the iPhone note...that's what I needed to keep perspective. All the holiday advertising is ramping up, and I'm very weak-willed. :) )

Thanks Six and paper!

This one will be interesting, as it's the first time we've directed something that we didn't write. I still think of myself as a writer, so it was a bit unusual to step in and just produce and direct.

The lighting I have to hand to our cinematographer, Nick Harris. He's lit and shot all our movies. We just tell him what we want, and he makes it happen.

Extra storage is always good. I'd wait for that.

As for me, I'm probably going to wait another year/year and a half. Getting the Touch makes the wait easier, especially because it's convinced me that I wouldn't want to use the iPhone as a primary music player because I need the tactile buttons, and also because having a Touch AND an iPhone is just silly.

OK, so that tees up my next question...take the 8GB model. I've got an 8GB nano as my primary music player right now. And while I've got more than 8GB of music, I've never even filled this one to capacity (I just tend to rotate my music around).

So...how much space do all the non-music-related files/programs take up on the iPhone?

I've used my iPhone as my primary iPod for a few weeks now. Oddly enough, most of my complaints about the iPod aspect have gone away.

My main complaint is having to Sync, instead of manual add/subtract my music.

Could I use a bigger storage capacity? Sure. I have 2 external harddrives full of songs and such that I'd love to throw onto my whole iPhone, but the 160gb wouldn't even work.

Past those two things, I love my iPhone, and I can't recommend it enough. It really is a fantastic little device.

Who would write that? I don't know if Bendis has the nerve to make that kind of attempt. Maybe Millar. Would it be Ultimately ironic if they conviced Stan Lee to write an Ultimate version of Watchmen? Come on, what fan passes on that graphic novel? Exactly my point. We are talking about one of the pillars of industry rewriting a comic that redefined the industry. Ravage was nothing before Stan attached his name to it. And it didn't go far, because he was on the book. Watchmen respun everything Stan's influence on the industry created. Don't get me wrong, Ultimate Watchman by Stan Lee would be awful, but I would still read it. I mean come on. Let the idea sink in :)

I just liked having an iPod as well. If the iPhone was a bit more iPod like, I think that I'd never survive the joy.

I so agree. Its the phone I have been looking for the longest time. Sad but true but i don't even really go on my laptop as much unless I really have to since I got my iPhone.

Unfortunately, I already got my christmas present so I can't ask for another gift. Um, I usually tell people to get me a gift certificate and I get a dumbfounded look. People usually don't get me comics related stuff because they know that I'll probably get it myself.

Grant it, it doesn't stop me from gettting a gift for myself.. Which i'm contemplating on getting a handbag since my birthday present is the trip to New York in April.

I also need some headphones. A co-worker showed me some Philips ones that he has so I might get those sometime next week. Mine aren't cutting the noise at work as of late since they moved my desk. :(

It's a social networking/shopping site. Very weird idea, but they have some different gift ideas at least. So I figured I'd put that out there to anyone else, like me, that can bash in their heads to come up with something different.

Is it weird that I really wish I knew a girl that like dinosaurs just so I could buy this necklace?

The first thing I thought was, "Why didn't those hit the market with Jurassic Park?" Greatest marketing miss ever? You tell me.

I regards to my list, it's long, drawn out and complicated...

A few Wii games
DVD sets, including Batman: AMS Vol. 2 and Justice Leaguse Season 1
And comics: Northwest Passage, Demo, and From Hell

I have a birthday like right after Christmas, so I tend to have longer lists, which would interest, maybe, five people.

On my Christmas "wish list" to my wife are the following Marvel Omnibus editions: 1) Daredevil (Frank Miller); 2) Fantastic Four Vol. 1 & 2; 3) Amazing Spider-Man; and 4) X-Men. I am late the omnibus collecting, but now I can't wait until I can hold these very heavy tomes in my hands. I'm looking forward to the omnibus edition of Iron Man which comes out in the spring I think.

I went shopping with the family the other day, just to get out of the house.

"Hey look, 30 Rock is on DVD!" "That's on my christmas list mom." "Oh. Fun."
"Have you heard of [Insert Book Title]? It's on my christmas list." "Oh."

I think my mom is one of those people we were discussing earlier. Needs the list but ignores it. She claims to have put "a lot of thought" into gifts this year, though, so I'm excited anyways. I'll just be upset when I could have bought all of the books I wanted myself a month ago.

The double-edged sword of middle class adulthood: generally, if I want it, I bought it already. Nonetheless, I have a pretty diligently maintained Amazon wish list consisting of graphic novels my local bookstore doesn't stock and DVDs that I would enjoy having in the house if I didn't pay for them myself. (I'm just now watching the Seinfeld set I got as a wedding present two years ago.)

The one problem?: Luddites. My mother-in-law uses the web but thinks it's going to steal her soul if she touches e-commerce, so every year we have this:

"What do you want for Christmas?"

"I dunno. Anything on my wish list would be good. Just go to Amazon; I'll send you the link."

"Oh, I don't do that. What do you want?"

"I-- you don't do that? Still?"

"No no. I don't do that. Just tell me something, and I'll put it in a bag, and then watch your face when you pretend to be surprised in a month."

"Seriously. Itemized list, maintained by me personally, accessible from anywhere in the world. You don't even have to buy it from them. You can print the list out and drive it over to Wal-Mart."

"I'm sure I'll think of something."

That's not even stubbornness. That's mental illness.

This thread has me thinking about headphones this year. Not because I don't have three pair, but because of the allure of the phrase "noise canceling."

(Between you and me, I left the SNL season 2 DVD off my wish list 'cuz I'll be buying it myself 45 seconds after it hits the shelves. Which it will do in 152 hours and 33 minutes.)

Jimski, I feel your pain. Up until about 6 months ago, my mom had no idea what Amazon was. Heck, she thought a wish list was something I put together in case I couldn't think of a wish when blowing out birthday candles. But a steady diet of me being a wiseass and badgering her about her "oldness" has allowed her to grow. I'm thinking she printed the list off the Internet and is going to the store.

Call me crazy, but that's progress!

My parents have always been fairly good technology-wise, as they used to run an internet cafe. But when dealing with relatives with that same stubbornness I just print the list off for them. They rarely argue with that.

I finally solved the headphone problem and ordered a pair of Alessandro MS1s. The actual Alessandro website is being stubborn, so I had to order from elsewhere, but I think they actually had cheaper shipping, which is a big plus.

Cool. But those aren't antennas. They are the slider which you adjust the headphones with. Once worn they stick close to the band and not quite as far out as they seem in the picture. The ones in the pic are essentially collapsed and pulled way up. Only a toddler can wear them as such.

Hope you enjoy the headphones. What kind of amp are you getting, if at all?

labor_days
11-28-2007, 07:16 AM
Well, sure. Amps can be as tiny as a tic-tac. In fact, that's what is inside your iPod or home stereo.

The thing of it is that as one buys higher end phones, one needs more & more juice to push the drivers within your headphones. Often, mp3 players have weak amps, which obviously, when coupled with a really good set of cans results in unsatisfactory sound. Which most people interpret as a lack of "punch".

That's where a headphone amp comes in. It's more power to driver the more sophisticated headphones.

Think of it like this; would you spend $400/per loudspeaker to run them on a cheap $50 Sony receiver? Of course not.

So, too are your headphones mini-loudspeakers that need power amplification beyond what is offered by many consumer grade devices.

Um, little of both. Bought a PS3 when it first launched. Kept it for a few months and sold it. Figured I'd buy it again when the games picked up and the price was lower. Seems that time is now.

Not loyal to any brand, per se. There's nothing for PS3 I am dying to have. But ya'know, it was hinted that someone would be buying such a gift, in turn I hinted that I would enjoy such a gift.

I pondered putting the PS3 on the list this year, but with a 360, a Wii, a DS and comics, I have little time to really invest in many of the games. Besides, most of the stuff out for it also makes it's way (or originates) on the 360.

I'm still waiting to see who wins the high def movie battle as I'm not really interested in it until it becomes cheap and more of a mass market appeal.

The one thing that will probably make me eat my words will be MGS4. My fingers are still crossed for the announcement of a 360 port.

With PS3 sales thrown in, Blu-Ray is winning. By a little.

If HD-DVD wins then fine, I'll get a player, however technically Blu-Ray is superior. However that hardly seems to be the market's deciding factor.

In the end I think it comes down to the little factor of names. Not many people, outside of PS3 owners go hunting for Blu-Ray. Almost no one, when I worked at Wal-Mart, came in knowing what it was. However, when they came in and bought there brand new HDTVs, it made perfect sense to them that an HD DVD player would go hand in hand with that. At least, that's the way I see it. Not really a deciding factor, just a great sales booster for HD.

I read that same comment a couple of months ago. Apparently, the porn industry was a big influence on the Beta v.s. VHS media war. However, in the present, there is so much porn available for free on the internet, do people actually buy it? Is the porn industry as big as it used to be, in the home video market?

That's a very good question actually. They definitely appear to be the trendsetters for web-based video on demand and stuff, but...is online the new distribution or will it work side-by-side with DVD. If so, then it still needs a format. If not, then it definitely removes them from the equation, which could change the outcome of the battle.

But...honestly, I don't know.

I guess it also begs the question: do we really need HD porn?

A question which is probably inappropriate for a Christmas Present thread. ;)

Geez, guys, the kid's five years old. You're going to show him Mirrormask?

At five he's ripe of animation of all kinds. Mary Poppins is a better movie than Bedknobs but Bednobs has the Scooby Doo level of scare in it that might be fun. Darby O'Gill and the Little People is great but the Headless Coachman scared me so much that I made my dad drag me and my sisters out of the theater when we saw it. Maybe you should wait on that.

Again, watch the level of scariness but the the Ray Harryhausen movies are great, Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and the Golden Voyage of same. The last Peter Pan remake was good movie too as I remember.

Kids have a higher tolerance for cheese and love the slapstick so now's the time to expose him to all the silly pleasures that are large on action and spectacle. Leave some of the rest for later when he needs a better movie to go with his fantasy.

Princess Bride is a great movie but I think all the dialogue humor would just zoom over his head.

It also depends on the kid. At five, my son was watching Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Star Wars, and probably most of the older films mentioned. Sure, lots of stuff zoomed right over his head, if the actual story is simple enough and the spectacle is spectacular enough, then they'll get a lot out of it. He was bored by The Princess Bride, but he sat through it. It's definitely more appreciated by adults.

Of course, I also let my son watch more stuff than others his age, but always with me and talking about it with me. And so far he's pretty well-adjusted.

So, I defend my choice to show him Scarface and Aliens...*

Oh, wow. Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. A lot of these I know and some I don't. I'll check them out online and make my selections. I'll post what I get...when I get them. Thanks, again.

I like Gaiman. I do. But he needs to edit himself. Mirrormask felt unfinished IMO. Just scattered and a little cheap, ya know?

I always felt like Mirrormask was really McKean's showcase, and his buddy Gaiman was just lending his name and his hand at scripting, ya know? So that could add to the scattered feel. Anybody ever read McKean's Cages?

I want a silver 160GB iPod (http://www.amazon.com/Apple-iPod-classic-Silver-Generation/dp/B000JO7RVC/ref=dp_variations_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1197819320&sr=8-10&tag=thweinco-20), a Kindle (http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Amazons-Wireless-Reading-Device/dp/B000FI73MA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197819399&sr=1-1&tag=thweinco-20), and a snow blower.

That sounds like my Christmas list except with a snow blower. And a Kindle. I just want the iPod.

I'm getting the iPod, but not the Kindle or the snowblower. I love the Kindle. If there were 800,000 rather than 80,000 books available right now I'd be getting that rather than the iPod.

If it supported color I would get it even though there's only 80,000 I'll be getting the next iteration

the color doesn't bother me. The book count does. For instance, reading All the Pretty Horses at the moment and it's not available on Kindle. Crooked Little Vein is though and that brings up a cool point - no more waiting for paperback. I love hard cover comics, but hate hard cover novels.
