I am guessing that there is more to it than just doing the 10/25 problems.
When a teracher hands you a sheet with 25 questions, and asks you to only do 10 of them, you can bet those questions will appear on an exam later. You'd be better off doing them all anyway.

So on behalf of former children who truly were punished for stupid shit, which is more people than you know -- and didn't have home entertainment centers in their ****ing bedrooms to have taken away from them, let me say "we don't sympathize".Sounds like someone else got brought up with a "clip under the ear" as well.
Overall I was pretty good as a kid. Living in fear of an alcoholic father who was prone to mood swings does that to you. I also got the crap beat out of me for randomly calling long distance numbers when I was 3-4 ... I still hate using the telephone, and prefer email for communicaiton.

Next time you should bust out with that nice little planner most schools give you, write down the assignment that the teacher assigned, have the teacher sign it, and then, when your dad starts getting angry about you not finishing all of your work, you should take your planner and throw it at him.

How different my childhood would of been if I had all those things... you should be thankful that your parents are able to keep you in a lifestyle that is so comfortable. You should think about how much your parents do for you and recognize that they only want to make sure that you are at least able to provide well for yourself. Your dad only wants the best for you, and is probably getting upset that he sees your skills going to waste. Rather than getting upset with him why not try talking to him. Obviously he has some ideas on what he's looking for in order to best help you. I'll bet if he sees that you're trying to better your marks he'll losen off a lot. It's likely only when he thinks that you're working at cross purposes that he's going to get upset.

While agreeing with the touchy-feely version Satori gave you, let me put the situation in another light for you, parent to kid.
In the future, when you have a job, there are going to be easy ways and tough ways to impress your boss.
Your dad is mad, because you are "in trouble with your boss" (teacher) and you had an easy way to impress them (by doing extra credit problems) and you didn't take it.
However, I don't agree that parents should just flip out for things that you're not aware of ahead of time. The time for taking away your entertainment should have been when you got the bad report card. That's *expected*. But to do it later for something that's as subjective as not trying as hard as he thinks you should be, that's confusing to the kid, because it's not like you were aware you were doing anything wrong until it was too late. At the very least, he should have given you the opportunity to do the rest of the problems and keep your stuff after he explained what he wanted.
I do think it's great that he keeps on top of your current grades and homework situation though... there are lots of parents out there who don't give a shit.
Here's a question though... if he took away your computers, how the heck are you posting here?

The fact that some kids get beaten by their parents is irrelevant to The Dunbar. He doesn't. Therefore, to him, getting those electronics (that the vast majority of kids these days have) taken away IS a harsh punishment. So give him a break, he didn't grow up in your house and his idea of punishment is different than yours.
I had the living shit beat out of me at four years old because I fell asleep at midnight in the middle of lifting weights. Other times for not eating everything on my plate. Others, on the way home from wrestling practice for "underperforming". Even once for playing with a kid from Kenya in the neighborhood.
So on behalf of former children who truly were punished for stupid shit, which is more people than you know -- and didn't have home entertainment centers in their ****ing bedrooms to have taken away from them, let me say "we don't sympathize" that you had your cell phone, three gaming console, television and laptop taken away. If it weren't for the fact that you really seem like a nice kid, I would be compelled to say something like "boo ****ing hoo". But since you are, I won't.Totally the same thing.

Just because kids have a better lifestyle than those who get beaten does'nt mean that they should ***** about this kind of s***. NObody in the world has the right to ***** except those who are on the verge of death everyday. Getting mad about your video games getting taken away is no reason to *****. Most of the time kids getting that taken away should be thanking thier parents, but they don't because noone (in my age group) seems to realize how good they've got it. And like Seumas said even if your parents are wrong
they could still beat the sh** out of you.

Guys, the fact that he's *****ing about it means that the punishment is working, that's all. It wouldn't be much of a punishment if he just sat back and went "Oh well."
He has a right to feel *****y about it, just as much as you have the right to think he's being whiney for *****ing about it.
If I'd had a forum to ***** to the time my grandmother made me stay home from a high school dance because I hadn't cleaned my room by 6pm, I would have been *****ing then, myself. Cuz apparently 6:01 wasn't good enough. :( *ALL* kids will find something to ***** about... chafing under restrictions is what they DO. No matter how harsh or how soft the restrictions are.
So lighten up on the guy.

The point I was trying to make is that simply understanding a punishment for what it is and not freaking out about it is better than *****ing about it. I happen to know "The Dunbar" personally and this happens all the time. It's important to make sure you know what's important and not end up believing parents are all intentionally "ruining" thier child's life. Kids these days need to get over themselves before they end up doing drugs and s***, which ends up happening to the kids who think thier parents are just stupid ass****s (even if they might be, they're still you're parents)
NObody in the world has the right to ***** except those who are on the verge of death everyday.
Uh, no. Afraid I have to disagree. I've got every right to ***** about whatever the **** I want.

To the topic of the thread. Yes many people get punished much worse for much more stupid things. But its still unfair for your crap to have been taken away for something that was not your fault. Address the problem in a rational calm way to your parents and I'm sure it will be fine. Everytime I whine and ***** to my mom about something it just makes it a whole lot worse. Plus I lose any respect and credibility that allows for me to come home high and drunk at 2 a.m., and not get in trouble for it. Though, I think I do deserve a ***** slap every once in awhile for that kind of shit.

Plus, as soon as you hit eighteen and get out of the house and on your own, your relationship with your parents will change significantly. There is less stress and being able to only see your parents when you choose to relieves a lot of the problems. Unless you're a total loser (jobless, druggy sponging off of mom and dad once you're on your own), they'll show a lot more respect for you and actually appreciate it when you are around. So true. Just remember that no matter how far away you move (half way around the world for instance), your mother still knows you don't clean your room, and tells your wife where you stash your porn.

I've never been punished for any stupid things that I did, I flunk a test and my parents didn't mind, because it was one test. On the other hand my older brother has been punished for most of the stupid things I've done. Not to mention the face that he was punished because my grades in x grade were better than his in that grade so my parents would punish him. How great is that my brother got punished because I got good grades.

We didn't talk for a long time after that but when we eventually did he appologized for the way he tried to raise me and told me he didn't like the way he use to be. A lot of us grew up through the school of hard knocks and people who actually have something to ***** about are unlikely to see someone whose biggest complaint is "my parents took away my cell phone" as having anything to really whine about.
I grew up through the school of hard knocks, too, but I don't think it gives me any right to ***** about it. Reasons to drink and do drugs, and beat my kids when I have them? Sure. But right to *****. Nah.

While I'm sure we all sympathize with the whole "parents suck - screw the man!" thing, the problem is that most of unbar's complaints are Brian Ralph Johnson-esque. But they're being voiced in a group that is full of a lot of us John Benders. Yeah, every kid has their crosses to shoulder and each have things that are - to them - travesties, but that doesn't mean that the travesties of a Claire Standish, Allison Reynolds or Andy Clark are on equal levels with all the other kids in the grand scheme of things.
So in that perspective, understanding is obviously forthcoming, but not sympathy.
He wasn't trying to get anyone's sympathy. He was trying to start a thread for other people to post stupid punishments their parents have given them. I don't know why every post after that was "Damn, you have it easy, kid." and then describing what shitty parents they had. Anyways, not everyone who has good parents had a good childhood. Ask the kids who were molested by priests.
And as annoying as I find it when people who have it good complain, it's even more annoying when people who do have serious burdens consistently remind everyone else of them just to make them feel bad.

I'm not sure what cappacity you work in, but this hardly seems like a productive method to approaching anyone that you actually want to get a positive effect from. I'm all for letting this thread die, just wanted to explain the tone of my message... I'm not trying to start wwIII.

I smell something I think it might be bullshit. I thought I was a good kid until I almost got suspended for locking the administration out of a computer.

I was suspended twice, in school (ISS) which is 10x worse than outta school suspension.
It would have been 3 times if my parents didn't intervene. I was cracking jokes on the bus with a buddy about a girl at school who had little arms like a T-Rex. Somebody told on us and we were called to the office to appologize to her face. The sad part is that I'd never met the girl before, and she didn't ride our bus, and would have never known any of the bad things we said about her. The principal wanted us to tell her to her face what we said which was incredibly wrong, and even as a 12 year old I had better taste than to say something like that to her.
So my parents were called and had to come to school the next day. I told them what I did, and what I wouldn't do... my Step-dad and my friends dad ripped the principal a new asshole and we got off scott free. I later apologized to the girl my way without repeating anything mean, and that's when I learned that she was also retarded.
The other two times are a blur. I think me and my bro got in a fight with some kids at the bus stop so we got suspended together. The other time I have no idea what I did, I just remember doing homework that I didn't get credit for. I also learned in highschool that if you skip like 3 days of school you get detentions or ISS, but if you skip a week+ the school counselor is just happy to have you back.

The best trick to parents is just to open about almost everything **you see i said ALMOST** of course you gotta hide stuff like for example weed, pron, certain video games, and sodas if you have a mormon .etc.. Otherwise i found it best to be open that way they didn't get pissed at me for screwing up. It appears you Dunbar that you hide everything from your parents which sucks because when you hide everything they get suspisoius and lurk around your shit and stuff which is not good.

 Yesterday my algebra 2 teacher handed out a work sheet and told us to do only 10 of the problems on the sheet. the sheet had 25 problems. i did the 10 problems and my dad flipped out and yelled at me for not doing all 25. he said that since i had a 78 i couldnt afford to do only enough to get by.
because of this he took away my
t.v
cell phone
xbox
ps2
n64
AND MY LAPTOP!!! (that i payed for)
A 78% isn't that far from a D, which is a failing grade in most districts. Apparently you aren't doing very well and need the extra practice. With that kind of a grade, you are either slacking off or not doing your work at all, and your dad wants you to do better. Maybe a little less time jacking around and more time studying would be a GOOD thing.
You should be happy that your dad cares how you're doing in school. Most of my cousins were allowed to drop out at 12 and 13 years old, and guess where they are not? Selling themselves to get by. A lot of kids have parents who don't care of who would beat them for less. My mom had the sh*t beaten out of her as a teenager for not doing a load of laundry to her step-father's standards. But you're slacking off in school, could be doing more, SHOULD be doing more, and you're *****ing that you got your toys taken away for not doing more.
You should be on your knees thanking whatever god/gods you believe in for parents who get your pricey toys and who want you to do the best you really can. A lot of kids don't even get food on a regular basis, and you have what many would consider a luxurious life. Go to a homeless shelter and pass out food. Maybe then you'll be grateful for what you have instead of pissed that they're taken away for a short time. School is a privilege to many kids who'd like to go, but who have to instead work to help with food and bills.
You have it easy, Kiddo. Don't expect sympathy. You should be ashamed for even complaining. When you are an adult, you will appreciate what your dad did for you, and I hope you get to tell your dad "Thank you" for trying to get you to do your best.

Well said, b/c you don't realise when your a kid, but until you get older you relize that parents can't be cool with their kids or otherwise them can't get their kids to do anything and they end up getting ran over like in the show *"Weeds"* for example b/c the mom is too cool with silace early on that he does shit to her and she can't do anything otherwise he would rebel more.

Parents CAN be cool with their kids. My parents knew when to be friends and when to be parents. But they also knew how to assert their authority. Basically education starts early. It can be made positive or negative, and this is where it needs to havea positive start. We played educational games and natural curiousity was encouraged. My parents can really be an example of what was done right.
However, kids today (not like I'm that far past, age-wise) compare themselves to their friends who are comparing right back, but when the object of your comparison really isn't what you should try to be like, is it any wonder that kids think they have it so hard to do homework? Meant semi-sarcastically.
