Hey I recently got into your show! I must say it is one of the greatest things ever! I love all the reminiscence from the eighties and nineties.

There were two things on my mind:

1 Do you guys have any experience with Mac games and if so how do I go about finding them? Also do most PC games have compatibility now? I haven't had my Mac that long and haven't investigated into gaming much.

2 Are any of you single? I think I am developing serious crushes here! J/k ...but really

Thanks

I know I'm not who you were looking for to answer but eh.

1. Some games are PC/Mac - it says it on the box (World of Warcraft, for example). Not all games make a Mac version which still stinks though it's getting better. I suggest going to your local Apple store or to Apple.com.

Some games, click me (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=2E630EB&node=home/shop_mac/software/action_games)

2. I think Jeff is the single one at the moment.

Edit: Oh, and welcome to TRS! Glad you love the show. :D

Yes, welcome. I would suggest you research the game first since Mac/Linux support still isn't as great as it should be (games should be OS agnostic). Many devs are known for cross platforming their games (Unreal Tournament games usually have Mac and Linux installers at or soon after the Windows release fro example). If the game uses opengl, or has an option to use it, it's more likely to run on Mac/Linux (I keep bringing up Linux because Mac OS X is essentially BSD and if it works on one it may be made to work on the other).

If you have an intel mac.. you can have the best of both worlds.. check out boot camp from Apple, grab yourself a copy of XP or Vista.. and be on your way to gaming nirvana.

The vast majority of games are PC only and some publishers are just being a PITA about things, like Valve. The Apple store online is a great place to do a little research into what games are available natively under OS X... but seriously, if there's something you want to play on the PC and can't be without bootcamp + windows is your friend. A full version of windows running natively on the Intel hardware lets you run anything you want to...

Blech, as if I would ever degrade my Mac that way!

;)

With work requiring a bit of winderz, I've come to terms with it.. keeps me from having to use the company issued Dell POS. And now? My main gaming rig went bump last night.. so my gaming fix is ably being met with my trusty MBP. :)

The new macs with the Intel chips have some problems with mac games published by Aspyr. SimCity4 and Civilization 3 are two examples where a brand new macbook with the intel chip has problems with the games. Its unfortunate because I love my new mac and I have just ordered an iMac too and I will miss some of my PC games. I agree 100% with Serenity though, no way in hell I will degrade my mac by running XP/Vista on it. Not worth it at all.

As to the second question can't help you out, married with a kid due any day now. It is welcome to have another Canadian in the forums though.

Thank you for all your help. What I really want to get is PuzzleQuest and FF. Also Abe's Exxodus because it's old school. I love RPG's and there doesn't seem to be many around. I haven't looked for new releases though.

Considering the subject matter, I imagine everyone here is single.

And a virgin.

And a virgin.

Actually out of most of the forums I read this group seems to be far from the norm. I can't speak for all but I would think most people here get out of there houses and have a life. So I would bet a lot have had relationships and have bumped bathroom parts at one point or another.

But like I said I can't speak for all of them...

I agree...it also helps to explain why this is my first post in months.

If you are interested in old-school games, look into a copy of Deus Ex for the mac. The graphics are rediculously dated but it's fun like the first time you played Half-Life fun. Deus has a great story too.

Please. Please stay away from True Crime: Streets of L.A. It's like GTA though. I know you are looking for rpgs but the pool is thin.
In case you are tempted to drop $30 at Fry's or the Apple store... DON'T buy True Crime. It's so buggy it's painful.

You may like to try Freedom Force or No One Lives Forever as well.

Food for thought.

Speaking of RPGs... if you haven't played 'em yet.. and I'm assuming you have..the KOTOR games are very cool RPGs... and they run natively on the Mac.

Part of the big problem with games on the Mac (and it was alluded to earlier) is that plenty of them were written before Intel/PPC was an issue, so they're still optimized to run on PPC. Rosetta allows them to run on an intel Mac.. but it's not native and there is some slow down associated. If you want to be sure that the game is designed (mostly) to run on your intel mac, look for the "Universal" logo on the box. [this goes for any software you buy for the Mac. If it doesn't say "Universal", it's probably older code and will run under Rosetta.]

Here is a page listing the native architecture for mac games. There are notes about quality on a few also.

I'm a born again virgin. Also only have Mac's and don't play any games on them but I would play GTA if I could for the editing abilities.

i just downloaded sim city 4 for my macbook pro(intel) and it works fine. a little sluggish, which is to be expected with mac games, but no real problems.

and yes, def check out the apple online store, thats probably your best bet. as much as it hurts me to say it, if you really wanna game, i would have to tell you to get a pc. of course you could always get a console, which is my route.
