Breakout.
Yeah, I know it's simple but you asked for the first one I loved! I was obsessed with that game, along with Centipede.
To answer you with a game you actually can play all the way through - Super Mario Bros.

I thought I truly loved a game when I played Mario bros NES Super mario 3 Super mario world and then mario 64 but was not until I got a Dreamcast and played something like no other game before it nor any game really since (even though Indigo Prophecy tried to be like it and RE4 used the quick timer event buttons as well)
But the game was called Shenmue, while they mixed choose your adventure gameplay like asking NPCs if they heard or saw anything but it had QTE's and during fight scenes it used a basic VF engine and then came the massive detail in the game that even with these games today with better visuals and vastly more powerful consoles behind them still fail to put as much little details in the game Shenmue did Yu Suzuki poured 10 years and his heart into it and Sega put in 70$ million into it (most expensive video game ever made up to that point by far) that while the story was not a grand one the atmosphere of this game made it a true experience..not a game anymore.
You were in that world Yu created and now fans go to japan and find the places the game actually takes place and fans of the series do mass research like YU did before making the game and in some cases affects your daily life...to some reading this that have not played or tried it but hated it for being to slow or something will not understand and look at this post and think "get a life" or something but for people who played and loved it understand.
Shenmue was an experience from it's amazing musical score to the incredible atmosphere and details.

My first video game love was the standup arcade PacMan.
My parents used to own a pub so I used to watch people play and spend hours pretending to play on the "insert coin" screen.
That game is also how I learned my first word. "shit"

Definitley Super Mario Brothers. I played that game so much that when our NES concked and the graphics only registered as fuzz and the occasionally moving fuzz blob I could still play it through by memory.

Quake I has been a favourite for years and I still have it installed on every machine because its so damn replayable. Throw in GL Quake or some third party mods that modernize the graphics and your set (if thats your thing). I play it in GL Quake which is a mix of the old and the young and doesn't change the look too too much.
I have played a lot of FPS in the last 10 years and not a lot of games come close to the feel of Quake I (for me)

My first love might have been an Atari game or something on my Commodore.. but I can't remember any of them.. so..the first game I remember stealing quarters from the parents car in order to play was the original Star Wars Arcade game.
The feeling of making the trench run hooked me and I was addicted. It is still the MAME rom I use to test new versions of MAME apps on my various boxes. Vector graphics.. tie fighters every where.. taking out the guns on the towers.. love it love it love it. :)

Games like Solaris and Joust on the Atari 2600 were my earliest favorites. But I can't really say I loved them. It probably wasn't until something like Super Metroid that I was blown away by a game and not just really enjoyed it. So I guess Super Metroid is my answer.

Frogger for Atari is the first video game I remember playing(and I'm sure I was somewhere around 7 years old). But, my first love, while I had played Super Mario Bros. on the NES, still had to come later...Duke Nukem 3D. I couldn't get away from the computer when I was playing that game.

:O i've never heard a girl claim love for Duke Nukem 3D... I dunno it just seems like such a hardcore gamer type game at the time, most of my friends have never even heard of it though, kinda sad cuz DN3D was awsome in every aspect. I remember trying everything from loading up levels with millions of pipebombs (only to crash my computer) to freezing + shrinking to permenetly shrink the enemies... heh

First game that I wasted countless hours and braincells on would have to be counter-strike. But going way back...Duke Nukem 3D (everytime I see nipple tassles, I think DN3D)

I was born in late 1987, so the games of my early childhood include Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and so forth. Super Mario Bros. was my first love by a long shot. I played that game from the moment that I was able to physically hold a controller, and to this day I occasionally load it up for the sake of nostalgia. The aforementioned games are also "first loves" of mine, though not as great as Super Mario Bros. was. If I were to recommend a classic game, aside from SMB, to somebody, I would tell them to check out Wolfenstein 3D. That game rules!
And come to think of it... I'm only 20, yet I'm still three years older than even the SNES! It's freaking incredible how far we've come over so small a time.
A lot of console guys here :)
Growing up in Australia during the 80s, the Commodore 64 was the gaming machine to have.
My dad took me to the gaming shop on my 15th or so birthday to pick out two games to get. Gaming reviews were a bit thin on the ground back then, so I picked out Elite and Archon sort of randomly (mmm pretty coverbox art). Spent my whole school holidays on Elite, love at first play.
All that excitement in 64k or Ram..my toaster has more memory than that now lol

Defnitely Sonic The Hedgehog 1. I played that game a LOT. It was almost more fun when you tried to figure out the codes for yourself when there wasn't any internet. Me and my Dad were constantly looking for hints in the game and when we finally found out how to get level select it was AWESOME. It was a little tougher trying to get it in debug mode but eventually we found that out as well. Man, I would play that game pretty much every day after school. :D

The first RPG I can remember really enjoying that wasn't a D&D game was Phantasy Star... I know the combat style and art style had been seen elsewhere. but that game really drew me in.. same goes for Shining in the Darkness.

As a kid there was this mom and pop video store that had a stand up cainet with Jungle Hunt. II played that game like crazy. Everyday after school, I'd ride my bike and take turns with my friends to see who would pass the swinging vines part and not die diving into the water. That game was the best!
I would suggest Anachronox. That had my favorite storyline in a game. Super smarmy and crazy twists.

There were a lot of games that I really liked, the oldest being the tank levels on Attack! back on Ye Ol Atari. (Still have the cartridge, packaging, and warranty card)
But I would say that the first game I LOVED was HalfLife. It was such an engaging experience.

I remember all of his little phrases (most of them pretty crude), and I got such a kick out of it. And, as far as format goes, I've always leaned toward FPS games. And, the more violent the better as far as I'm concerned. Detail and storyline are important, to be sure, but I've always loved any game that really can accomplish getting my adrenaline pumping, too. DN3D was my first.

Until recently.. i had denounced my FPS loving ways.. I'd become too wrapped up in the RPGs.. and Puzzlers.. and platformers.. but.. Castle Wolfenstein.. Marathon.. Duke Nukem... oh.. the memories.. all rekindled by Orange Box and CoD4... Really.. it was probably just CoD4.. it's the only game that has made me feel the story so much that I forgot to "play" the game and just wanted vengence.. oops. have to finish that level again... damn. :)

First game (singular) I loved? Hard to really quantify. I had a shit ton of Commodore 64 games. These are the few I remember playing a lot:
Bruce Lee
Impossible Mission
Blue Max
Archon
Wasteland.
There was another side scroller that I loved but I don't remember the name. Started with a "G" I think. I didn't see it in Wiki.

The first game I loved to play was Donkey Kong. After playing Pac-Man, Frogger and Asteroids to death, all before the age of 7. Donkey Kong was the first near platformer. A defined goal, different level layouts, it was great. I am so lucky to have enjoyed the games that followed with the same characters to this day.
First console game then came in as Adventure on the 2600. (Would still have been Donkey Kong but the consoles just couldn't do it right.) I had to wait about ten years to play the RPG that I love to this day, Final Fantasy II. The Characters, the Story, the Gameplay. It had it all, for the first time.

I remember moving to NC when I was 6 and for x-mas that year my folks got me an NES. I ended up that x-mas with Mario/Duck hunt, Golf, Top Gun, Castleviana and my First love Mike Tyson's Punch Out. To this day I can still sit around and play that game for hours.
Other than that the only game I can think of was the first Resident evil. I remember when that came out playing it in the dark and loving every minute of it. Never played another RE after that though.
