I'm in the market for an mp3 player, that or an old palm LOL. But I've already had a couple of pda's and I am giving in that they are dead. I will miss having my portable web browser :(. Well anyhow.... the only thing i really care about is that the thing plays videos and syncs flawlessly. I'm experienced so I can make anything work, but it be nice to not open that can of worms if I don't have too. I imagine that anything that shows up as a Universal Storage Device is a good thing. I never thought I'd say this, but I'm thinking about buying a Zune... I hate giving microsoft money, but newegg has the ugly ass brown one for 95$, talk about bang for your buck. Although I don't know if you can use it without their proprietary software. Sansa also has my attention... I like the new ipod nano but it costs too much for the specs. I would buy an ipod touch but I know that won't be compatible and it's too $$$$$$$. So any good suggestions? If someone tells me the Zune works / I can get it to work. I'll buy it. Can't beat that price point. I heard Irivers stuff is compatible.

Don't really think you should go with a Zune. I tried it, didn't like it. Really doesn't matter how 'cheap' it is either. I thinik the video iPod will probably take over the universe. Personally, I still dig the hp2200 - hp6315, even the hx4700 is cool. Ipaq is kinda getting slammed by all the other newer stuff in the pipeline. Still, if you have any developer software, a conversion of media is relatively simple. I like the fact that the ipaq line is still upwardly mobile, the fact that it uses SD and CF cards and has been seriously dumped by people into eBay. I picked up another one, a palmtop with the Nevo software, for like forty bucks!! Yeah, and besides, you are right for hating the propietary software. That sucks ass too...

You know that Ubuntu has an app called Hipo in the repositories that is fully iPod compliant.

Also, I used GTKPod with great success.

The only caveat to GTKPod was that if I used exclusively Linux it was fine, but if I updated my iPod with Windows, it would not read the database properly back on Linux.

Hipo would be your best bet I think.

Anyone ever tried using VirtualBox with a WindowsXP VM with iTunes installed to do the ipod synccing? I would think it (the WinXP VM) would be able to access a SMB share from the Linux host OS.

Cowon D2 comes in 2/4/8 GB internal ($145/170/210 at Newegg) and a SDHC slot currently up to 16GB. Theoretical limit on SDHC is 32. It has a voice recorder and FM. It does FLAC, OGG, and all the usual suspects video and audio. No special software needed. Drag and drop.

I've ordered one for my son-in-law.

I heard about it on Linux Reality podcast by Chess Griffin.:)

I have a 30gb video ipod running rockbox so I don't have to deal the the weird apple file stuff. I am very happy with it. I don't think they have a version for the newer ipods yet tho.

The Creative Zen comes in 2-32 GB flavors and shows up as a mass storage device, so it should work. I dont have it yet, but ive loved my last 5 creative labs players

I bought a Zune for 95 dollars, it is a good mp3 player in its own right. It is Great video player and on par with the ipod in sound quality.

The problem is that under Linux there is zero functionality and you cant sync with rythembox or banshee. I have a windows setup just for syncing. Hope someone can crack this issue soon.

I feel that the 5g ipod is by far the best on linux...Amarok,rythembox,banshee and even songbird all work near out of the box with the 5g ipod....

Or and click and drag mp3 players.

I love my cowon iaudio x5l. It sounds good and has very good battery life. Transferring media to it is just like using any portable hard drive..
If I pull it out next to a current ipod it looks like I live just walked in from 2002 though. The ui just isn't up to the ipod standard.

ipod 3rd gen, video 1st gen, shuffle, and touch have all worked fine for me. I usually use amarok for it. although, for a touch, you need itunes to activate it when you first get it

You definitely want to find a Cowon player. I've got the iaudio 7. Not only is it supported in linux but it supports both FLAC and OGG codecs. Excellent battery life, FM tuner and recoding ability (internal mic or line in) made this an easy pick for me.
