Ok no flaming please. I realize the Mario games and in particular Mario64 has a very fond place in many people's hearts, and this is not an attempt to look cool by trashing what is considered a classic game. Its just that...

I downloaded it on the Wii VC, and just cant get into it. I'm confused by the level design, get anxious over missing stars and find the camera controls hard to manage. I actually get more enjoyment from the 2d Mario games.

Is it because I'm old and grumpy, and didn't grow up with the Mario games (PCs and Commodore 64s were common in my world) ?

Do love Mario Kart though, so Im not a total heathen :)

Well, I love Mario 3 and Mario World alot more than Mario 64 also, but I still think 64 is a great game.

It doesn't benefit nowadays from being almost the first game of its kind though. You can find better 3d platformers now though that benefit from the refinement of the genre.

But in it's day it was simply revolutionary.

Yep... when I go back to play it now, even on my N64..it feels a bit dated. That doesn't change the fact that when I played it for the first time I was blown away. The level of freedom.. the views.. the abilities... Like Darth said, it was revolutionary. It became the template for all 3D platformers to follow.

Current titles have long since surpassed it in terms of gameplay and fun.. but it was a singular experience at the time.

I was never a fan of that game either. I have it on the DS when that launched thinking maybe time would make me like it more but not really. It's not a bad game just didn't have the same pull for me that other Mario games did.

I had the exact opposite reaction.. when I got the SM64 for DS, I actually worried about whether I was going to like the DS. I never got used to the little thumb nub control I was supposed to use..

As others have stated, that was essentially the first game in the 3D platforming genre. After all these years, you can find games that improved upon it greatly. I still love it because I actually played it (and I'm pretty familiar with it so the drawbacks don't bother me as much). Probably not the best choice in your case though. That's like trying out DOOM as a FPS. It was revolutionary (so they say, to this day I despise the game) but it's been improved upon as well.

It seems like I'll be the lone voice to say that not only did I love it when it originally appeared, but to this day I find it to be one of the best platformers I've ever played. I bought it for the DS, played until I got 150 stars, and started playing it over again. I've also downloaded it on the Wii and am working my way through it yet again.

I still enjoy the game very much. I remember being BLOWN AWAY the first time I played the game. While I am not blown away by it anymore, it is still a lot of fun.
