We were all creaming our pants over the trailer so what gives?

Actually, I'm just excited to be going to an actual movie theater it's been so long since I've been.....

Just got back from the theatre and all I have to say is WOW I really enjoyed it. For those of you who are going to see it look for the Andy Serkis "The Hobbit" refrence, it made it all worth while. I had to explain to my friends afterwards and they still didn't get it. Don't you just hate being the only geek in the group.

I LOVED this movie. The score was awesome. Jackman, Bale, Caine were wonderful. The story made this movie!

I didn't catch the refrence. What was it?

The movie was great. Really made ya think.

If you haven't seen the movie and don't want to hear this then don't read it. It is not a spoiler and doesn't give any of the plot away. I just don't want someone flaming on me because I gave away one very small portion of dialog that has no meaning to the rest of the story.

Well if your still reading this then I guess its because you are interested in hearing "The Hobbit" reference. It happens when Andy Serkis first meets the Hugh Jackman character(Rupert Angier) in the mountain. Andy's character raves about how he saw Rupert's magic show once and he guessed what was in everyones pocket. Andy Serkis as everyone should know played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings movie. Well if you have read the Hobbit you should know that Gollum and Bilbo had a riddle contest to see who could stump the other, and Bilbo's final question was, "What is in my pocket?" It might be a vague reference but I stuck my hands up and let out a small cheer when I heard it.

I loved it. Figured it out rather quickly (at least Hugh Jackman's story). And who doesn't like seeing busty young women in corsets?

Plan on seeing it sometime this week. Who knows WHEN though. I have a bad habit of forgetting to see films when I say I'm going to see them.

I saw it tonight, and was pretty disappointed. I didn't read much about it ahead of time and didn't know the story, but I figured out what the ending would be within the first hour of the movie.

I mean it was ok to pass the evening, but no great cinematic achievement.

It was complete shit. As well as the most disappointed I've been with a film in YEARS. Wow. Just wow.

*spoiler!!!*

only a ****ing MORON could not see that that's Christian Bale...seriously...jesus christ. most terrible reveal and most obvious EVERYTHING ever. I predicted the whole thing.

*end spoiler*

seriously, though, most predictable movie EVER. This film was the laziest, most rushed feeling film Nolan has ever done and I only hope the Dark Knight makes up for it.

it was aight, nice way to kill a hot afternoon. half way though i was more interested in the parallel rivalry between Tesla & Edison than the magicians.

figured out the “surprise” (or prestige as it were) pretty quickly, so it kind of killed the ending. otherwise a good flick.

I quite liked it. Maybe I'm stupid, but the film kept me guessing the entire way.

Nolan's got a knack for atmosphere, and he nailed this. Good thriller. Fun story. Some of the relationships (i.e. Scarlott Johanson's character) felt a tad empty.

Solid B+.

Why are people harping on the reveal? Is there really anything new under the sun when it comes to movies, twist endings and the like?

You'd have to be pretty much a numskull to have not figured out the reveal because it was very obvious. I wish people would get over themselves because it's like some kind of badge of honor..."I figured the reveal 30 seconds into the movie." OK, if you watch a million movies that's just not a feat anymore.

To me, the movie was more about the lengths people will go to get revenge, to best one another and what they will do when obsession takes over.

Perhaps you didn't like the movie even on that level or others...but the "I could see the reveal a mile away"....that's not a complete reason to dislike the movie (in my opinion).

::::SPOILERS::::

I don't think the twist was that great by itself, but when put into the context of the whole movie it was pretty solid.

It wasn't about coming out of left field and completly suprising us (like so many movie twists). It was about dropping clues...making us think we have it complelty pegged and then shifting it slightly.

First they give Hugh Jackman an actor double. You think oh...I bet it's him that gets killed. Then they bring in the whole clone machine and you are like...****...that's how Christian Bale has been doing it too and I bet his assistant is his clone. Then you find out that Hugh Jackman is the only one making clones and that Bale's double was actually a twin and they have been switching back and forth then all of the "you don't love me today" and "i don't know which knot i tied" stuff makes more since.

It was like a magic trick...you are pretty certain you have it figured out, but there is a slight of hand that changes the real truth just slightly.

I loved it.

Thanks, BG, I'm glad I'm not the only person disappointed by this movie. As you said, predictable... but that's not even the worst of it. IT... JUST... DRAGS. Performances are flat, lifeless... dialogue uninteresting.

There was kind of an interesting aspect to the movie, but I'd already seen a similar idea in Primer. So that didn't do anything for me, either.

OK, Nolan. You're making a movie that has Christian Bale, Michael Caine... why didn't you just make Batman 2!!! I'm waiting another 2 years because of this???

bigwhiteryan, we either always totally agree, or totally disagree, no in betweens.

YET, the performances were SOLID. Christian Bale I think is one of the best and definetely in my top 3 Favorite Actors alive right now. I can watch him in anything. Bring it, anything. He had me at American Psycho, then Equilibrium, then Batman. I don't have time to list the movies, but he's always amazing.

I agree with Iggystar, though, my dromegirl in a lotta ways. She is totally right that people should get over themselves (me?), and that the movie's reveal isn't an impressive thing to get... and i would agree with her opinion...BUT....

the way the film was shot was obviously catering to the emotional impact that was meant to happen in the context of the film itself. The film was incredibly formulaic of movies with big twist endings in all the twists it threw at you near the end one after the other, and films like this are often centered around the surprise/reveal of the film itself. Why is this movie like this? b/c:

Jackman's character was SEVERELY underdeveloped. His wife has died, he wants revenge. End of story. We are meant to follow this guy as someone we kinda care about through the whole thing? Naw.

This movie was really formulaic, predictable (not just in twists), and overall bland for me. The costume/set design and Bale/Caine's performances were AWESOME, though. I wouldn't recommend seeing it, but would reccomend seeing almost any other Michael Caine or Christian Bale, or hell even Chris Nolan movie. :)

I have to disagree with you completely. The whole point of the movie was to demonstrate the absurd lengths people will go to to get revenge and best another person. If you realize early on in the movie what the ultimate length is, well, then it really doesn't build up to anything, does it?

I mostly go to movies for the stories, not as much for the ability to recreate a time period or such, so the final reveal was very important to me. Compare it to a movie like Little Miss Sunshine. I enjoyed that much more because the final reveal was so surprising and a great reflection on the rest of the movie.

But people go to movies for different reasons. I think you may be falling into the, "I liked it and anyone who didn't like it is an idiot/snob/smug son-of-a-*****" trap.

I don't know if I'm explaining myself properly, Morty is being very needy.

Not me. How could I be any type of snob when I'm one of two people who enjoyed X-3 and Superman Returns?

I just hate that flippant, I saw the reveal, statement without any thought behind it. That can smack of movie snobbery, especially when so many people like to best each other...I knew from the credits the entire film and hated it because of that. I can appreciate your explanation...I disagree with it, but respect it.

You too Gilmore, good points.

I think Christian Bale is one of the best young actors as well. The Machinist, I believe, is his best performance. And Michael Caine, always very good.

I'm not saying they're poor actors -- sometimes, the dialogue just kills the performance. If the only movie you'd seen Natalie Portman in was the Star Wars prequels, you'd think she was the shittiest actress in Hollywood.

For me, a good indicator of how well a movie's dialogue is written is how many memorable lines stick with you after the movie is over. For instance, The Departed. That movie is insanely quotable... everyone had a different favorite line, from a different character.

Now, how about The Prestige? Does anybody remember a single line of dialogue? Anything that made you chuckle?

Not me.

Just saw it today and enjoyed it immensely, I liked the slowly dropping clues then slightly shifting thing that was mentioned earlier. What I didn't enjoy was having to explain the movie to my buddy afterwards when he asked me what's up with all the hats? Oh yes, that's why I like to go see movies by myself.

I too saw the movie last night. I really liked it. I don't think that I have ever not liked a Nolan film. I did call the big "reveal" before hand, but that's fine. The only thing that hampered my experiance was that I took my girl to see it... and she HATED it. Not because of the way it was done, or because it was bad, but because she couldn't detattach herself from the story. She was treating it like a real-life drama, not a thriller/suspense film. So when Danton was **SPOILER** killing his clones **SPOILER** she just got sad and angry. Though, talking through it with her later, I think that she will warm up to it as time goes on, because she seemed to at least have gotten SOMETHING from it.
