God, I hate those kinds of stores on Wednesdays! I don't have time to browse*!

I do that when I go to the new books section. Takes me about two minutes to browse the offerings.

I do have time to browse, but just the new books, I don't have time to browse all the comics in the store. I pick up lots of things I didn't plan on buying that way.

Keep in mind that I don't have one regular store. I have 5 possible stores that I shop at, depending on where I am on Wednesday.
Pull lists don't make sense for my particular situation.

This could almost be its own thread. Me, I still have a pull list at the first store I found when I moved to LA. It's not a great store, but I know the regulars there, and I...just can't seem to break it off. :D I do get a discount for having a pull list there, though.
Meanwhile, I've got at least 2 other better stores that I might drop by to browse and purchase additional stuff.

Damn. That's crazy man.
I had two stores and maintained separate pull lists at each. Discounts were sweet. Now I just got one store and no pull list. Only mail order.

Most stores didn't have a chance to pull my books before I got there. I certainly would have one, but it's not really an option at the moment.
I do not have a pull list, but then I actually frequent a couple of stores.
I live in a big enough city that unless something like Cap's death goes down I have no problem finding just about anything. And it's fun to check out a couple of stores, you never know what's on sale.

So what is your regular store? As a fellow L.A. native, I'm curious. :)
Sure...well, like I said in my other post, my oldest shop is not arguably my regular shop anymore. It's The Flipside, out in the valley. That's the first comic shop I started going to, and I just know all the guys who hang out on Wednesday, etc. However, I'll be honest: it's not a great comic shop. It's a cool maze of old comics and records, but it's not the best place to browse.
I more regularly frequent Earth-2 in Sherman Oaks. Great little boutique store. The guys there are all great. That's down the street from my office, so I'm probably there more than any other shop.
So what I'm doing lately is...a minimal pull list at the old shop so that I can chat with everyone, pick up my "core" books, and then I drop my Earth-2 just to browse and pick up books I wouldn't normally get. I pick up all my trades there. I usually drop by there pretty casually a couple times a week.

I have the shittiest memory on Earth, so I have to have a pull list. Plus my store is pretty good at putting stuff aside for me just encase I want it too(the various WWH tie ins have all been put aside and they have no problem with me saying, "not interested"). The only drawback is that they are the only store in the city that doesn't offer a continuous discount on weekly files.

I have a pull list for some books online, so that I can drop books from it without feeling like I'm breaking up with the comic book guy.
When it comes to the books I can't wait to get in the mail, I too have a couple of different shops I frequent. The Fantasy Shop is a great place to get your Big Two Crossover Event, but I know without even going in there that if I ask for Scott Pilgrim they're gonna look at me like I'm a Skrull, so tomorrow it's Star Clipper Comics for me.

The funny thing is that I would feel like a Skrull going into Star Clippers and getting really mainstream stuff from the Big Two. Going in there (even though I love it), I feel like I need to buy 5 copies of Suburban Glamour or something so the people working there won't look down on me.

And indeed, the first time I stopped going there was for just that reason; I could not bare any longer to walk past the rack of self-stapled locally produced black-and-whites about twentysomethings who work in a comic shop with my Chuck Austen X-Men. One of the managers would openly mock the inferiority of the things that he himself was selling to people. You go in there now, though, and they'll talk your ear off about whatever dorky thing you have in your hand.

I have a pull list at my regular LCS (Dave's Comics in Richmond, VA), but I also shop occasionally at two other stores. Dave's is where I pick up my weekly books. In addition to my pull list at the store, I put together my own list from the weekly shipping list. Often I'll have a number of additional titles that don't show up on my pull list at the store. It also minimizes the chance that I'll go home without a comic I particularly wanted to read. It's a system that works for me. Plus I like the 10% savings that goes with having a pull list.

I've never had a pull list.
I like the freedom of walking through the section of books, and picking books up based on how I feel about a certain artist/writer/storyline.
Plus the discount thing doesn't affect me and my store much. The owner has a plan where every 15 books you buy, you get one free. On top of that, he gives the regulars discounts no matter what they pick up, TPB, issues, whatever.

I'm not usually a fan of pull-lists but I see where they have their perks for online shoppers that just want to shop-n-go. I'm more of a "walk my fingers through a Previews catalogue" because my purchases sometimes change from month to month.

He doesn't do pull lists, he just gives all his regulars (me included) a discount, as well as a discount card. This way you can always change up what you're getting with ease, and even if you stop coming to the store for two years, you've got your discount, and have avoided the awkward LCS break-up. I like it.

I absolutely have a pull list. My store is a small store, only has a few hundred customers. The owner orders very close to his vest on things. If I didn't have a pull list I'd probably miss half the books I get. As it is I miss a lot of small press books because they don't get a lot of press until they make it big.

Yep got one i also get mine shipped to me so i don't get to read em until Friday
Actually i get a sweet discount with my pull. Its 20% off my books and anything else in the store (when i do go to it). Also its free Shipping but they don't ship my books unless i have over 5 that week which usually i do.
No pull list. I understand it's what small shops live or die upon.
Luckily I have a couple of guilt free shops, one which gets all the animation traffic from Bruce Timm and Paul Dini to Patton Oswalt. Wednesdays are huge for them.
The other store is a block from Pasadena City College so they get a big flow of student traffic. Maybe that's why they carry so many independents and trades.
Two healthy shops run by knowledgable people who care. Although the second store has been so good to me (see other Comic Shop thread) that I'm going to skip my regular Wednesday store and give them all my business.

I shop at the same one as AroundComics and the owner gives a %10 discount on every 10 books you have on your pull list. I have about 26-ish, so I get %20 percent of all purchases. You don't really realize how much that is until you buy a hardcover or absolute and $15 gets cut off your price.

Hey 20% is a free book after every 5. Not to shabby. My shop only gives 10%. I'm thinking about going to Dark Tower when I start going to school in the city in Jan (I live in the south burbs). I would have plenty of time to sneak up there on Wednesdays, but I'm just worried I might have a tue/thur schedule in a future semester and that would screw everything up. It seems like a great store though.

Sure he could create his own list, but asinine was a perfect word for that... I flip through and hand him his right in front of their face, (with one exception it's a book we both read, but I have more titles so he graciously buys our shared books). I'm suspicious it might just be an arbitrary decision because he picks up other books sometimes. I don't even know.

Not at all. AF Books in Tinley. I don't want to sound like they're a bad shop. They just kind of fit that keep to yourself sort of stereotype and I yearn for the least bit of small talk or recognition. It's disheartening that I have the same relationship today that I did when I started going there in February. There's a guy who works there weekends who is awesome though. He's really friendly, funny and will give recommendations and the like. He's almost incented me to start going on saturdays. The owner is really nice too, but I've only met him a couple times.

Only once in my life have I had a pull list. In junior high, Patrick the Intern and I shared a pull list at West Side Comics on 86th St. in Manhattan. Although back then and in that store it was called a "folder". Being like 11 years old we didn't quite get the concept of the pull list, though.
We thought you only bought your books when everything on your list finally came in for the month. We'd go to the store on Saturday (comics were still coming out on Fridays back then) and they'd pull out our books and we'd look over the covers and nod sagely to the bearded dude behind the counter and say "that looks good" and he'd put them back. At the end of the month we'd buy them.
It took us a while to figure it out.

i have a pull list, but mainly because i shop at a tiny store that doesn't order very many books, so if really want a book i have to put it on my list or there's a really good chance i won't get it. But if i went to bigger store i probably wouldn't use one, unless they offer me some kind of discount (my store gives me 25% off all my stuff). I like the idea of browsing the shelf in a big store because then there's a better chance of finding hidden gems i wouldn't have other wise bought, i don't have that option where i am now

I have a pull list cause the store I go to here in town is a pretty popular comic store in MA, so if I don't get there on wednesday, I might not get that particular comic I was looking for, but not signed up for (their arn't really any other comic stores in the area that I'm aware of, so I can't go multiple places). So I look for stuff in advanced, like big events or what have you, tell them to put it in my box, and when I go in, they give it to me and I go browse for a while. It works pretty well for me. Plus I just got a job there, so that'll probably make things a bit easier as far as new titles

The holidays are a rough time for me at work. The idea of being able to stop at the store on my way home after a long week is amazing. that's exactly what i do, i'll look at the shelf for a minute or two, but mainly to make sure i've gotten all the books i've ordered (sometimes they make mistakes and stiff me on a copy of something). I'll also pick off the shelves, but not too often. Like i said, there isn't much selection in my store, i wouldn't know what to do if i had rows of books to look through. Either my head would explode or i would spend my entire afternoon sifting through books

I had a pull list but still browsed. Kept my PL conservative for that reason. Never know what might catch your fancy as you peruse the shop.
On occasion, if pressed for time, I'd just get my stack and leave. Usually this was at the place nearest my work, should I be running late during lunch or something.

That's what I do, too. Keep a conservative pull list, and then I usually try out a few things.
That's the one good thing about serialized comics. I feel free to sample books.
There have even been a few occasions where I'll buy the first issue of a series to get a sample of it, then monitor reviews to see how it's progressing, and if I'm still interested, I'll buy the trade when it comes out.

Incidentally, I just did the whole awkward LCS break-up this week, like someone mentioned upthread.
I finally decided that it was just silly to keep driving 30 minutes out of my way (although it is LA, so 30 minutes in the car in LA is, like, 10 minutes anywhere else) just out of loyalty to a shop -- purely because of the people. Because while the owner is great, he doesn't really stock much that's not pre-ordered or totally mainstream. Not good for browsing and checking out new things.
I swear it was just like a break-up, too. So awkward when you have to tell a guy NOT to pull anything for you anymore...

"It's not you; it's me. I'm just not ready to commit to a relationship with a retailer right now. I'm going through some stuff... I want to see indie books."
I had a couple of somewhat predictable disappointments with shops this week. To confirm a suspicion, I called the shop by my office and had this conversation:
-Hi. Did you guys get the new Scott Pilgrim?
-...
-Does that... ring any bells? Scott? Pilgrim?
-What does it look like?
-It... it's roughly the size of a paperback novel. Black and white book. Oni puts it out. Little... little manga-looking.
-...
-Arguably the most popular indie comic on the market today, the market in which you work for a living every day.
-And the author's name is Pilgrim?
And it sucks, because you have to see the conversation through to its conclusion even though you know when he asks "long pause, what does it look like?" he's not gonna end with, "Oh, yes, we have 35 copies of that. They're in the window display."
So then I went to the really good store by my house, and they had all the newest books with the newest variant covers... except the variants were on the shelves pre-bagged with $10-15 price tags on them. The day they came out. I am sure a lot of stores do this, but I'd never seen it before and some of my faith in humanity shriveled on the vine.

Yep, it was kinda like that. :)
I actually started making up reasons, like "well, I'm traveling more for work now, and I"m just not sure i can make it in on a regular basis...Oh, who knows, I might start ordering from you again...I just need to take a month off and decide..."
But this was also for the January books, so that means we're now in that stage where neither of us has moved on, and we're just going through the motions for the next couple of months...

Thank you, Eso. Who, by the way, is actually an otter.
So...when people have a pull list....do you not get to hunt around for books? Do you ever just come in, grab your bucket of books and go to the counter?
I don't have one, so I couldn't say, but I think I'd still browse. If I had a pull list, it would be generally for the cemented books. DMZ, Ex Machina, Invincible. Things I won't drop until I've seen them through. Past that I'd still browse for all my cape books, and what new stuff has started up.

well at the shop i go to, i don't have to by the books off my pull list i don't like. I mean sometimes, that issue of Xmen or justice leage might not appeal to me,so i just don't buy that issue. The book is still on my pull list so i know i'll get the book but if i don't want that particular issue i'm not obligated to buy.

I registered mainly to tell you that I lol'ed at that.
I do indeed have a pull list. My shop is tiny. No, tinier than that. Tiny like a tiny thing that is tiny. Only has a handful of regulars and basically stays alive because the guy gets child support payments from his ex wife.
But hey, its half a mile away, and he gets anything I ask for. Theres another shop about 15 miles away I'll peruse if I want to check out something out of the ordinary, or pick up some back issues or trades.

Pretty much never. I really enjoy browsing the store, even looking at stuff I've looked at a bunch of times before. I usually walk in, wave or say "hi" to one of the owners if he's not engaged in conversation with someone else, and browse the wall. At some point, one of the owners will bring me my stack of books and I compare them to the list that's on my iPod (which gets written up as soon as the shipping list is posted on iFanboy). Once everything's there, I usually keep looking at the wall for a bit and maybe I glance through an issue of something I may or may not buy. Sometimes I'll read something (like What If? World War Hulk, which didn't impress me), sometimes not. After about ten minutes or so, I buy my stuff and leave.
I like being in my store, but I feel weird hanging out after I've bought my books.

One of the many reasons I'm glad my store's pull list is done through their website. I could uncheck all of my selections and never darken the door of my shop again. I'd feel a bit lame if I didn't at least also send an e-mail explaining, though. ("Dude, fallen on hard financial times and comics are the first casualty. I'll miss the store!" --M)
So are you going to a different store or are you just gonna start buying online?
