So I go see a movie with my girlfriend and really like it. I go see it again with my mom because she wants to see it. Then it comes out on DVD and I buy it. Then the special edition or director's cut comes out and I buy that. Now with the change to HD-DVD and Blu Ray I might be buying some of these flicks again. And then there is the occasional cult film like Rocky Horror that I keep going to see in theaters even though I own it.
So out of all the movies you have ever seen which one cost you the most money overall? How much was it?

Serenity. I went and saw it about twice a week as long as it was in a theatre in town then bought it on DVD.
Cost:Twice a week x 3 weeks x 6.50 + DVD = $59
The only movie that I've ever seen more than once in a theatre. I usually just wait for the DVD and watch it a million times after liking it in the theatre. I did it for Serenity to try and get the grosses up to get a sequel.

I'd say the goddamn Star Wars Trilogy. Saw the release back in the late 90's when movies were 8.50, then bought the VHS box set becuase DVD was still too new. Then they make the new ones and I watched all of those and bought all the DVD's. They re-release the new-originals on DVD with Grido not getting killed. Then they re-release the originals with Grido getting killed. ****ING LUCAS.
But hey, can you really put a price on those kinds of memories. I don't think so.

Apparently I spelled "GREDO" wrong, thanks for the correction Bravestarr.

Probably Return of the King. I think I saw it four or five times in the theater, then picked up both the theatrical and the extended DVD cuts. I haven't, however, picked up the new "limited edition" discs, so I guess there's some hope for me yet.

about a year after Akira was released in Canada I bought the VHS tape for $80... about a year later it was available here for $20... with subtitles... then the DVD came out years later and it was $30.... I've never bought a rare movie since.... then again, it was Akira, so I guess it could of been worse.

Fight Club...I saw it a couple of times in theaters, bought the DVD the 1st day it came out. The DVD was stolen last year, and I, of course, had to replace it.
Brazil Criterian Collection... cost me $70
When I got my 1st DVD player, I ordered Brazil through a distribution company. I got a 20% discount because I worked at a video rental place. I watched it a bunch of times, then I re-shrink wrapped it and returned to it to a different store. I got more store credit than what I paid for the DVD.

I can understand where he's coming from. My secret (and eternal) shame is that I saw Attack of the Clones four times in the theater against my will. The first time was intentional, the second was with a group of friends who I was *supposed* to go with the first time, the third was with a friend who was just *dying* to see it, and the fourth was trickery by my parents. We were supposed to go see The Bourne Identity (I think), but my dad changed his mind at the last second at the window and bought tickets for AotC.
Early on in the fourth viewing I started to mouth the words. I think I cried throughout the rest of the film.
Fortunately, I only paid for the first ticket.

Okay, I'm going to put this out there, but give me a second to explain: if you've got a girlfriend and you want her to get worked up fast you take her to a "romantic" movie, right? Now, if she's the kind of girl (like mine) who's up for a little action in the theater then you want the longest romantic movie possible, right?
I paid for two of us to see Titanic 3 times.
Then I bought her the VHS.
Then I bought her the DVD.
Was it worth it? Well, we're married now. Been seeing each other for 11 years total. And yes, it was. And is.
But still, I PAID ALL THAT MONEY ON A MOVIE WITH THAT F%$#N' CELINE DION SONG IN IT!!!!

On the bright side, I've never had to watch Titanic to get laid. :P
Actually, I've never watched Titanic, period.
It's one of those things I will refuse to do until the day I die, even if I am the last human on earth who hasn't watched it.
Whoa, I never said I HAD to, I said it got her *there* faster. :D
But good for you, man. Nice to know someone else still believes in the movie boycott. Seems like if critics like a movie, people go just 'cause they heard it's good. Wins an award? They'll buy it no matter what. I don't care who says a movie's good, if it doesn't sound like my kind of movie, I don't go. Titanic? I went to see the damn boat sink, and maybe watch DeCaprio die. I didn't care much for him at that time.

I've seen Lilo & Stitch 6 times at the theaters, bought an American import for a high markup, then a local version to lend to friends and the 2 disc DVD that came out later, but that was only $12. I was fortunate to work at Disney at the time so I didn't have to pay all the time. I was also fortunate enough to work on the sequal :):) shame it's a pile of pants compared to the first one :(
Another big spender for me was Amelie (In my opinion the most betiful movie ever made). I saw that 3 or 4 times at the cinemas, and paid an exorbrent price to get the American version, as it had the most special features (I really like to know how a movie was made) and a local version to lend out. I think it's lame to talk about a movie and then not share it, but if you spend $70 onthe stupid plastic you may aswell not get it all mushed up. especially as Amelie came in a paper fold out box :(. The local Aussie version doesn't let you switch off the subtitles! Peutant! Mon francais c'est genial!!

Actually, I have been boycotting the MPAA in entirety (I haven't paid to see a movie in the theaters since X-Files in 1998). But I definitely won't see a movie just because I'm told it's the best ever. Unless it's from a source I trust and has given me good advice before.
I tend to actually watch movies that don't get great reviews more often than the other way around. I've found that I've recently been getting most of my entertainment advice from Jon and Dan. When they say a movie wasn't very good (or even better, that it completely SUCKED) I find it right away and watch it. Not because I don't trust them, but because I want to see for myself what they're talking about. Only after that do I get around to watching the ones they liked.
How exactly does boycotting the MPAA cause you to not go to the theaters?

But I definitely won't see a movie just because I'm told it's the best ever. Unless it's from a source I trust and has given me good advice before. Not sure about totally boycotting theatres, but I certainly go less and less requently ... because the quality of movies seems to suck these days.
I do watch a lot of movies though. 60" widescreen TV and surround sound system in the living room, comfy couch, and a kitchen so I don't get charged $9.50 for a large popcorn and a soda or water. I don't get the asshole with the cellphone TXTN his buddies two rows in front of me from the phone with the ultrabright screen that stands out like a warning to ships, and I don't get the rustling of the potato chip packet from the guy behind me.
On thinking about it, the second Matrix movie is probably the one that cost me the most money. Because of that movie, I swore I wouldn't go to the movies again, and bought the big screen when we moved. It has been an investment that has paid for itself over and over again.

I would have to say Leaving Las Vegas.
Went and saw the movie twice with dates: 40 bucks
Went and saw it for 2 weeks straight at the dollar movie because I needed a place to chill for a few hours between class and work: 10 bucks
Bought it on VHS: 25 bucks
Bought it on DVD: 30 bucks
Bought both soundtracks: 45 bucks
Total: 150 bucks
Second place is Office Space: 100 bucks as I have bought 5 copies of it for myself and friends and coworkers.
