View Full Version : Trade of the Month Club - Brainstorming Session

What do you guys think of a trade of the month club? Every month we can pick a new trade and discuss it here? It can be anything from an overlooked indy book to a hilariously bad superhero book, basically anything that would spark some discussion. It can give some people a chance to try something new and give others and excuse to re-read an old favorite.
I won't bother proposing a book now, i want to see if there is any interest in this first, but perhaps we can make a list of suggestions and eventually decide on one (and maybe it doesn't even necessarily have to be one book, we can do full series too eg: Bone, Preacher)
Interested?

I'd be interested. I'd like to see people's opinions on older books like Alan Moore's Ballad of Halo Jones or Rick Veith's Bratpack. Books that our younger readers may not have read before.

I'm all for it, though I might not be in every month. I would also suggest something a little mainstreamy and easier to find for the first book. A sure way to eliminate people from wanting to participate is to put something totally unfamiliar in front of them.

I don't think everyone has to participate every month. Hell, i don't even know if i can participate every month, but i just thought i would be a good thing to get the ball rolling. As for mainstream, Queen and Country shouldn't be that hard to find. I think it's still in print so your LCS should be able to order it for you, either that or you can pick it up on Amazon no problem.
But if you guys think a more mainstream superhero title is a better idea, im all for that too.

It's not sold new at Amazon, but they have plenty of cheap used copies. Unfortunatley, used limits your shipping options so it might take longer.
Edit: Oddly enough they do have a Spanish version available new. Habla espanol Eso?

So who has picked up their copy of Queen and Country? I started reading mine on Wednesday, I haven't finished it yet since i got bit overloaded with my weekly comics this week, but it seems like something that won't take that long to read
I just sort of wanted to kick this thread back up near the top. I think it's time to start thinking about a January trade.
I know some people were excited about THe Black Dossier, sadly I don't think that will ever work as it's basically limited to the americans on the board. It's not available in Canada or the UK due to some copyright issues. I was able to track one down, but I live in (remarkably the SECOND?!?) largest city in Canada, Toronto.
Any other suggestions?
I know Q&C was great, but for arguments sake, would a more controversial trade be more fun?

The Question? It's a great series, easy to find, and the first trade is all that's out so it's a really good time to hop on board. Also, it's only being released in trades, so minus the select bunch who read it originally, we're not discluding anyone, and I'm sure even those people could use refreshing.

A lot less risky, as we've discussed a bit in the GD thread. If you can't find it, order it than way. Hey, so I know Six already suggested a Brubaker book on the Question trade thread (and it looks like a good suggestion too...). But in the spirit, of well, Darwyn's The Spirit ending, I was thinking we could read Will Eisner's The Best of the Spirit.
I recently checked this out from the library and am blown away by its originality and also to how true Darwyn stayed to Eisner's vision.
Of course, I have more to say about it, but if we're going to talk about it, I want to save it. So, what do people think? Any other suggestions so that we can decide to give folks more time to pick these things up?

I vote for this one.
Me as well. I've read through some of The Spirit Archives and adored it.
Well, that's cool for me. I think we should wait until this weekend and then the new trade for the month of Feb. will be declared. I know this is mikegraham's thread, so I want him to weigh in on this too. And tell others to throw in their two cents!

My vote still stands :)
Anyone else have any other ideas for which trade we should read next month? If we're going to be doing this, we need to decide soon so peeps can get the book if they want to participate.
I'm thinking that if no one else speaks up we'll tally the votes for the two trades that are up for the honors:
Scene of the Crime: A Little Piece of Goodnight or The Best of the Spirit by Will Eisner

I got some private messages--and emails actually--from various infrequent posters and lurkers. They want us to read and discuss Scene of the Crime.

I stroke my chin in suspicion at you sir.
Stroke it indeed. :)

Keep on strokin', brother.
I've always wanted to hear what Scene of the Crime is like. I don't read comics. I just lurk.
I've already read the Spirit book. Scene of the Crime sounds like the best way to go here. Snootch to the Nootch!
I just got three copies of Scene of the Crime by accident. My vote goes to Scene of the Crime.
The Spirit is an inconsiderate womanizer. Lurkers don't go for that shit.
I...am...job.
Cooke leaving the Spirit series has me very depressed. Choosing a Spirit book would be like twisting the knife. Make mine Brubaker.
Hello, friend. Have you ever thought to yourself, "My manhood could benefit from being 700% larger."? No? Would you mind asking your wife to come into the room?
Keep on strokin', brother.
You know, it's a good thing that Fred hasn't joined this conversation...
You make a compelling argument paper, though I question the lurkiness of such folks.
Does sending you a private message consume less time than actually posting? Like the licks to the center of a Tootsie Pop, the world may never know...
Well, unless there is a surge of Spirit votes, I guess we'll be going with the Brubaker book. Shall we declare it later this eve?

Because of Pol?!
I DEMAND A RECOUNT!
I mean I wouldn't be unhappy to read that, I would like to read it. I just would like to read The Spirit also and feel it's timely.

Ummmm... yeah... I have lurkers AIMing me and telling me they want to do The Spirit... So... they do...
(Truth be told, I don't care. I just think that we should only count 3/5 of the "lurker absentee" votes)

That was just a sampling of the emails and PMs I got. Many of them I just had to delete without reading. Only so much room in the inbox.

Fractions make my head hurt. All the denominators and numerators...and me with no handy calculator.
Sigh...

They'll go into exile... and then, after a general armistice, they'll come back in full force and destroy the homeworlds of the iFanboy, and they will be cast out, trying to find a new home: a planet called Earth...

SO The Spirit wins right? We love on Brubaker enough. I think we should give Eisner some more props and it is very appropriate with Cooke's Spirit just ending.

I beleive so. Me, you and Neb for The Spirit and Six and Paper for Brubaker. Gunga might have been in for The Spirit too, or he may of just been being contrary. Either way it's up The Spirit for those who have voted.
(To be clear I'd be all for doing the other book next month.)

I think we have a pretty clear winner then.
And I will refrain from dancing around and yelling "IN YOUR FACE!" to Pol. I promise.
Awesome. I think we should definitely do the Brubaker book next month for shizzy. I think I'm going to call the guys and leave a voicemail that they could play on the show. Maybe we can get more people involved that way.
Also, when should we start the new thread? Should we shoot for February 1, or give people two weeks and start it on Feb. 8th?

Why don't we ever let the underdog win? For once, the book with the least amount of votes should win.

How about this... Spirit for February, Scene of the Crime for March? I'd be all for Scene of the Crime, but I know it'd be a lot easier for me to get a hold of the Spirit. This leaves me time to get both.
Edit: Didn't see Neb say the exact same thing right above me.

That sounds like an awesome idea. What about like a podcast or something? don't a bunch of people on the forums have their own? couldn't they do like a monthly collaboration and talk about the book of the month? It's just an idea that I think would be cool. Ifanboy Presents: The Ifanbase Book of the Month Podcast.

Still waiting for the absentee ballots to come in.
I just called and left a message for the guys...hopefully, they'll get it. And then if they do, play it.
Is it weird that I'm kind of paranoid that I was unsuccessful in leaving a message?
...and most importantly, what does that say about my own confidence in my intelligence. :)

Cheers Neb, but you guys don't have to wait for me, I haven't been able to check the forums as much as i used to these days (work's been catching up with me). Either way though, i'd throw my vote in for Scene of the Crime, mainly because it's a book i've been planning on reading for a while now.
but either way, the Spirit will be an easy find for me, and it's a classic so i don't mind reading it either (although i'd much rather be checking out the new Cooke series over the Eisner stuff)
good choices this month guys.
In terms of when we should start the official thread, I was thinking we could get it going next Sunday, which I think is the 3rd. Is that cool with everyone?
Just a friendly reminder to all who click:
We'll be starting the discussion of The Best of The Spirit by Will Eisner this coming weekend. It will, of course, last all month.
I'll start the official thread with my initial thoughts on Sunday, February 3rd.
Be there, or be square.
