OCTOBER 2007 SALES CHARTS & MARKET SHARE REPORT

Ladies and gentlemen ... it's officially a horse race again...
Diamond released their monthly Direct Market Sales Charts and Market Share report Friday, this month for titles that went on sale in October 2007, and in a perhaps surprising turn, DC Comics, despite having neither the best selling comic book nor graphic novel of the month, has returned to the top of both Market Share categories for the first time since May 2006 and just four months removed from Marvel dominating the industry market share in record-setting fashion.
Despite the flip, things look fairly typical atop the Top 100 Comic book chart, with Marvel scoring the two bestselling titles of the month with New Avengers #35 and Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #24, respectively, as well as seven of the Top Ten titles. Noticeably absent at the top of the charts for Marvel however, is an issue of World War Hulk, which didn't ship an issue in October.
In the trade/graphic novel category, Dark Horse scored the top spot with their Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Long Way Home trade paperback, and Joss Whedon's now-comic book franchise continues to perform very strongly on both the comic book (Buffy #7 is the 7th bestselling title of October) and trade fronts with his name in the writer's credit box.
But as mentioned, it's in the Market Share categories where the numbers are atypical this month, at least atypical for the last year and a half.
DC, who had already been cutting into the huge margins Marvel established in the early summer the last several months, narrowly leads the Unit Share category 38.98% over Marvel's 37.08% and the Dollar Share category in an even narrower 34.17% to Marvel's 33.68%.
Dark Horse also continues to build steam slowly, scoring a notable 7.07% in Dollar Share along with 5.39% in Unit Share.
Despite the small margins between the 'Big Two' publishers and the absence of a Marvel event title at the top of the charts, it will now be noteworthy to watch how the major publishers perform against one another leading up to and then during their respective 2008 events, including Final Crisis for DC and the Skrull-centric Secret Invasion for Marvel.
