Josh! Snap out of it, you love Scott Pilgrim! "Too old" pfah! If you're too old for SP then what am I?

Somehow O'Malley has managed to create a multi-medium experience in one medium and it is that unique mix that adds excitement to this comic. It also has an "anything goes" vibe. I don't remember ever reading a comic that gets gags from directional arrows.

In animation, Tex Avery was the master of breaking the expectations of the medium. Try to imagine the first time an audience saw a character's eyes pop out of his head when gawking at a pretty girl or the first time someone was flattened by an anvil. This comic does a similar thing in a totally different way using constructs of anime and video games.

But almost as impressive as the craziness is the way O'Malley doesn't overdo it. Characters could be gaining and losing points throughout the book but don't. Josh pointed it out, we care about these characters.

And those color pages? I'm guess that's the reason we'll all be buying an eventual hardcover down the line.

Listening to the Scott Pilgrim discussion now.

I feel like it's a really good representation of my generation. I know these people. Scott's 23. I'm 23.

Interesting thing though. O'Malley is 27, which is closer to the iFanboy age than my own.

Listening to the Captain Marvel discussion.

Question.

Is somebody trimming their finger/toenails or pruning a bonsai tree in the background? There's a clicking noise.

Sorry, that was me. It was actually my mouse. I only had a PDF of the issue, and I was looking through the issue.

No worries. I'm just glad it wasn't my hard drive. :D

Here's how good Captain Marvel was: I didn't realize until this podcast that it was a miniseries, and when I heard that it was I was crestfallen. If you'd told me that after "The Return," one of three comics in the last few years to go straight from hand to trashcan, and you would have been roundly mocked.

I wouldn't actually consider this book Manga. Anyone else think it is? Isn't?

The art style in Scott Pilgrim has a little Manga vibe to it. I can imagine one seeing the big eyes/mouth character designs and thinking it was manga at first blush. But it really isn't manga by definition. No.

Terrific book, Scott Pilgrim. Loved the extended Scott Pilgrim discussion on the show.

re: the show

All around fabulous show, iFanboy. I really enjoyed this one a lot. Felt you guys were OTM on just about every book this week.

I too share the enthusiasm for Titans East, GA/BC and the Outsiders. With Green Arrow/Black Canary being the best book I read this week.

Again, great show.

Been looking for a reason to pick up SP and this episode cinched it. I grabbed vol. 1 over lunch and look forward to devouring it this evening.

Lovin' the love for Scott Pilgrim. Still don't understand the hate for WWH, but oh well. And put me down as another who digs Green Arrow/Black Canary. It's sort of a light/fun read. Sadly, it looks like it's gonna be depressing soon enough, though...

Honestly? I think the real Michael Lark needs to start talking like the Ladies' Man after this...I mean, I've never met him and I have no idea WHAT he sounds like, but... c'mon!

Good episode, as always. Oh, and I liked the intro interruption to advertise the Gerard Way podcast. That was nice.

On the topic of cool nicknames....I have a college friend who's nickname is A-bomb. He has a tattoo of a cartoon bomb on his arm as well.

He is pretty sweet.

Pilgrim's very similar to oldschool comedic manga. If anyone is feeling particularly adventurous, try Ranma 1/2 or the more modern FLCL. I dare you.

It defies classification.

Bryan Lee O'Malley was on Fanboy Radio and even he refused to classify it or attempt to distill it into a Hollywood pitch. He wasn't sure he could anyway.

Well he was able to at least once, huh?

And by the way, could Brandon Lee O'Malley in that interview have conformed to your expectations any more? He sounds like he could be a character in his own book.

re Edgar Wright:

Shaun of the Dead was good. He's also working on the Ant-Man movie. That's just what America needs right?

Amazingly, I think it's more of the fact that we DON'T need it. I think it will be a good satirical, but NOT SCARY MOVIE-ESQUE, take on Superhero movies.

I think Edgar Wright is a great choice because he is great because he is very good at making you feel really deep drama and tension while making you laugh histerically 2 minutes later. Just like in Scott Pilgrim

I don't suggest listening to it without the movie and I STRONGLY don't suggest you watch the movie.
