I bought Crysis the day it came out, and by the time I got home I forgot all about it and continued playing COD4. I am really torn between returning the game and getting my $60 back or opening it and giving it a try (keep in mind I'm a poor college student so money isn't exactly easy to come by).

I'm having so much fun with COD4 right now its really hard to put down. I have a feeling, that with all the hype, even the game reviews, that Crysis is going to be a huge let down. My worst fear is I’m going to wish I spent the money else where and get that terrible "i knew it feeling".

I recently bought a new computer (spent around $2500) with the intention that this beast will be able to run Crysis and look beautiful, at the time COD4 wasn't even on my radar.

So far everyone I have asked said I should give it a try, and when I ask them to be specific they always refer to the graphics. While I do love graphics, I'm more into the game play, and having a fun multi player is a huge plus. The open ended game play offered in Crysis doesn't seem to appealing, and to be honest, i usually dislike having to run around huge areas wasting my time going in circles.

I guess the real question is, should I open Crysis, or return it and spend the $60 on another game coming out around the corner? I have done a brief look at what’s coming out in 08' and I really don't see anything worth wild (before you say any one of the 3 or so MMORPGs, I quit wow, and that’s the last MMO/MMORPG I will ever touch).

Suggestions or comments?

There are about 50 000 MMOs out there :P

Staying on topic, though; just go ahead and play it. You know you're going to some day anyway, if you have the specs to play it now you might aswell do it.

Try it out: Most people say you can finish the single player in one sitting (though, I'm not sure on that being a good thing) so you're not wasting that much time.

Personally, I haven't touched either of the games the post is about, because they both feel like unimaginative iterations of their genre, who don't bring anything new to the table.

With that said, if I had the games here, already paid for, and a rig that could run them well, with equipment I liked, I'd give them a try at least. But I don't.

Crysis brings a few new things to the table, It's not all just graphics. Crysis is probably closer to what stalker should have been without the RPG elements. As far as being "too" open ended, it's not quite the case with crysis, there is always a clearly defined goal with a clearly defined path to get there, the fun begins when you go off the beaten path to find an alternate entrance. The multiplayer, though I have yet to play the retail multiplayer, beta multiplayer was great, and again felt much like what battlefield 2142 should have been.

While it may not bring tons of new things to the table, it definitely refined the genre to the point where the only downside is the computer needed to run it. The singleplayer takes a good 8-9 hours to finish on normal, I'd recommend playing it at least on hard and it will take quite a bit longer, not because of constant dying but the way you will need to approach the game, IE - not playing it like halo jumping around shooting everything.

I've played through it once already, about 2/3rds done my second playthrough. I have to say Crysis it the best fps I've played in a long while. I've got a pretty weak PC, but still, the game does look great. I too am a proponent of gameplay > visuals (hell I still play AO, an MMO from 2001).

There are mixed reviews though, and that's the odd thing, some people absolutely love the game, and some people find it meh (don't know what those people are thinking). I loved the open-endedness. It's not too open, you always have a map marker you gotta head to, and a nice compass/minimap to show how far you are away from your goal. Weapon customization (and balancing) is well done (tip: don't use the silencer for anything but stealth kills at close range, it hurts your power and accuracy so much). The nano-suit's abilities add a nice dimension to gameplay, giving you many options on how to accomplish your goals (except I felt strength was a little underpowered). Voice acting is superb and the story over-all is pretty well done.

There are a few problems, like helicopters are just too powerful if you don't have any rockets, and speed boats are too accurate, and the last quarter of the game isn't open-ended at all compared to the rest of the game. Even with these few problems I still feel the game is definitely a great game. Just play it at your own pace, how you want.

I played the demo through like 5 times, which is the first level of the game, and didn't enjoy it the first time playing, the 2nd-5th times I had a blast.

Oh and you never, ever have to go in circles, or go back through an area you already were once in, ever.
